Christmas time with kids is filled with warm traditions: Listening to Christmas music while decorating the
tree, going to look at Christmas lights with hot chocolate in hand, and taking the kids to visit Santa Claus. Well,
forget about that last one. At least for my family.
Parents think about how fun it will be at first to take their kids to see Santa, or tell them gifts are on their way
from Santa, but this comes with a series of annoying questions about Mr.Claus like how he makes it to all the
houses in one night, as well as the broken trust after revealing the truth. I didn't want that.
You may think that our Christmases were rigid, and without any warmth or magic. I don't think so. Part of
that is due to what I taught my kids about Christmas. Instead of telling them Santa is real, I told them it most likely
has its origins in St. Nicholas, a man who was kind and generous to children in flix's 2021 movie A Boy
Called Christmas is a useful tool for helping kids connect Christmas myths and traditions with reality while
keeping the spirit of generosity alive.
The month of December is filled with movie and game nights, plays and concerts. These family traditions
have added flavor to my kids' entire childhood. Hopefully, they know now that it's the time with family, doing
special things together, that creates the magic and that my love for them goes well beyond just one day —— and
that magic, wonder and awe(敬畏) can happen any time with family, especially if we remain generous and grateful.
My kids are older now, and they' re glad they didn't believe the myth of Santa. It was one fewer bad memory
for them, one fewer blow to their innocent childhood.

D. To stress shared family time is the core of Christmas' charm.
27. Which of the following can best describe the author
A. Generous and devoted. B. Strict but caring.

Today, poetry and science are often considered to be mutually exclusive(互相排斥) career paths. But that
wasn't always the case. The mathematician Ada Lovelace and the physicist James Clerk Maxwell were both
skilled poets. The poet John Keats was a licensed bining the two fields fell out of favor in the 1800s.
But translating research into lyrics, haiku, and other poetic forms is reappearing among scientists as they look for
different ways to inspire others with their findings.
“Poetry is a great tool for questioning the world,” says Sam Illingworth, a poet and a geoscientist who works
at the University of Western Australia. Through workshops and a new science-poetry journal, Illingworth is
helping scientists to translate their latest results into poems that can attract appreciation from those outside of their
immediate scientific field.
Stephany Mazon, a scientist from the University of Helsinki in Finland, joined one of Illingworth's
workshops. In the workshop, she was grouped with other scientists and tasked with writing a haiku, a
17-syllable-long poem, which focused on water, which appeared in all their research projects.“It was a lot of fun,
and surprisingly easy to write the poem,” Mazon says. She plans to continue writing.“We harm ourselves to think
that scientists can't be artistic and that art can't be used to communicate scientific ideas,” Mazon says.
That viewpoint is shared by Illingworth, who is critical of current science communication initiatives that rely
too often on public lectures featuring one-way PowerPoint presentations.“Actually, when science communication
involves writing and sharing poems, it invites a two-way dialogue between experts and nonexperts,” he says.
Scientist-poet Silva also notes that poetry offers a way to simplify complex scientific concepts for the general
public.
Scientists and poets are both trying to understand the world and communicate that understanding with others.
The gap between scientists and poets is less than people might think. We' re all just people with hopefully really
interesting things to say and to share.

A. To display they were talented.
B. To encourage different career choices.
C. To confirm they were no longer popular.
D. To show poetry and science can combine.
29. What are Illingworth's workshops aimed to do
A. Promote a new science-poetry journal.
B. Inspire non-scientists to pursue science careers.
C. Encourage science communication through poems.
D. Help scientists share insights on the latest research.
30. What does Illingworth think of the present ways of science communication
A. Complex. B. Traditional. C. Effective. D. Creative.
31. Which might be the best title for the text
A. Scientists Take on Poetry
B. Scientists and Poets Think Alike
C.Poetry: A Great Tool to Question the World
D. Science Communication: A Two-way Dialogue

Chatbots offer a personal shopper for all. They can listen to what a user wants, produce a list of products and
help with comparisons. Increasingly, consumers can even make purchases through a chatbot.
AI companies are betting that their technology will greatly change shopping just as e-commerce(电子
商务) did in the Internet age. OpenAI has made deals with Shopify and Etsy to allow sellers to sell their products
through its chatbot in return for a fee. Google is also eager to get a share of the market.
Retailers(零售商), however, are not sitting back. Many e-commerce websites are indignant at the idea of an
AI agent getting between them and their customers. Amazon, the world's biggest online mall, is eager to keep
shoppers coming to its website. It has blocked OpenAI from collecting information. Meanwhile, some retailers
have developed shopping assistants of their own. Research suggests that Americans prefer such bots over
third-party ones like ChatGPT when shopping.
Julie Bornstein, founder of Daydream, says that chatbots are more helpful when searching for certain goods.
They work well when products have clear, comparable details—— like mobile phones, for which retailers list size,
weight and battery life. But in deeply personal areas, such as fashion, most struggle.
How willingly consumers turn to AI for shopping may also depend on how much chatbot-makers
embrace ads to make money. Google has reportedly told marketers that it will put ads into its Gemini chatbot next
year. That could make chatbots one-sided and less fair in giving suggestions, thus driving shoppers away.
As AI transforms online shopping, physical stores gain renewed importance. Shops with eye-catching
displays and charming assistants will offer another way for companies to shape how they are perceived. Plenty
of shoppers say that they value human interactions when shopping. They still want to touch and feel certain
products. And at this time of year, heading to the high street offers a chance to enjoy the holiday spirit.
32. What does the underlined word“indignant” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Happy. B. Amazed. C. Indifferent. D. Angry.
33. What is a possible disadvantage of putting ads into chatbots
A. Chatbots may bring in less profit.
B. Recommendations may be less objective.
C. Retailers may be forced to cut their prices.
D. Shoppers may stop visiting physical stores.
34. What is highlighted in the last paragraph
A. The value of offline shopping.
B. The disappearance of high streets.
C. The necessity of keeping brand image.
D. The popularity of AI-run physical stores.
35. What's the text mainly about
A. How AI is reshaping shopping.
B. Why physical stores regain popularity.
C. How retailers are reacting to AI agents.
D. Why chatbots work better for some goods.

How Houseplants Boost Your Mental Health
Growing indoor plants is becoming a global wellness trend. A 2025 WHO report shows68% of the potted
plants kept at home are not just for decoration. 36 Studies reveal that touching rosemary leaves reduces
cortisol(皮质醇) by 19%, while watering orchids calms people down just like deep thought or quiet rest does.
The magic lies in three aspects. 37 Caring for leaves or observing green trees creates natural
“micro-breaks” from digital screens. This explains why office workers with desk plants report 30% less tiredness
in their eyes.
38 Harvard neuroscientists found that successfully growing plants triggers dopamine(多巴胺)
release, creating a feeling of success similar to completing a crossword puzzle.“Each new leaf gives clear proof of
your growing skills,” explains Dr. Emma Lin.
Surprisingly, plants enhance social bonds. 39 People who live in apartments and exchange plant
cuttings have 45% more neighborhood munity gardens also become spaces for
inter-generational storytelling, where elders teach herbal knowledge to children.
Starting with easy-care plants ensures early successes, which fuels motivation. Even an ordinary plant pot
next to your window can be your stress-reliever. Early wins with easy-to-grow plants build confidence. 40

B. For beginners, choose plants matching your lifestyle.
C. Growing plants helps to bring about a sense of achievement.
