When I was a little girl, my mum used to say I would read the back of a medicine bottle if I didn’t have a book in my hand. It was true, and even now that reading habit has been with me. I’m talking about real books, books made out of paper, books that you can hold in your hand, to read, at the table, on the subway or my favorite place to read-in the bath.
But the number of people reading books is dropping. A recent survey tells us that Chinese people only read 4.77 printed books a year on average and in the US, 25 percent of the population say they didn’t read a book last year! So what’s stopping people from reading
The answer of course is the huge influence that technology has had on our life. Why read a book when you can watch a movie or TV play on your smart phones or iPads For younger people, books may not be as exciting as online games. With stories you have to work at it, closely follow the turns of the plot. There are no shortcuts with a book. You have to turn page after page.
But you can still get lost in a book. We all have this thing called imagination. It’s much more powerful than any computer; in fact, it’s worth remembering that any online game was first written in words as a story by its writer.
So we need to read-if we do not read, it will be hard for us to improve our ability to think widely. Reading is a process in which we need to compare and connect other things we have read and seen in the past. If you do not read, this will not only influence your study, but also your social life in the future.
So why not follow me from now on Run a hot bath, or find a comfortable chair and read a good book for a few hours--there are quite many, for free, in your local library.
16. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 1
A. The writer used to enjoy playing with a medicine bottle.
B. The writer has had the reading habit since his childhood.
C. The writer always has two or three books in his hand.
D. The writer often reads books at a table on the subway.
17. Why is the number of people reading books dropping
A. Books are becoming less interesting. B. Technology has greatly influenced our life.
C. 25% of Americans don’t read books. D. There aren’t enough printed books to read.
18. What does the word “shortcuts” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean in Chinese
A. 捷径 B. 理念 C. 缺点 D. 短文
19. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true
A. Reading can help to develop our imagination.
B. All online games were first written in words.
C. We need to think a lot while reading a book.
D. Younger people prefer books to online games.
20. In the last paragraph, the writer mainly suggests that we should ________.
A. run a hot bath to read books B. borrow books from the library
C. read more books in our life D. read books in a comfortable chair
C

So do you want to write a novel Here are a few rules that might help you:
I always like to start with the plot(情节). A good story needs conflict(矛盾). Many great novels begin with a happy hero-then something goes wrong. The plot follows their efforts to fix it. Along the way, they earn something about themselves.
The theme is also important. It is basically the message that the story is trying to get across. But never tell it to your readers directly. Let them work it out on their own. That way they’ll feel clever and want to read more of your books.
Characters. They’re important! Before you start writing, get to know the people whose stories you will tell. Ask questions and get inside their heads. Don’t focus on how they look- focus on who they are inside. And they shouldn’t be perfect. They’re humans. They need to make mistakes from time to time, and as they solve problems, they grow and change.
Finally, think about your own writing style-the words you are going to use to write your story. Keep it simple. You don’t need to use long or difficult words. But try to use different words sometimes. Think about the people who might want to read your story. Think about how to keep them interested. But be yourself. Write the words that come most naturally. These will always be your best words.
So there you have it: plot, theme, characters and style. Follow these golden rule and you’ll never go wrong. Of course, though, don’t forget-rules are often there to be broken.

The Earth’s climate depends a lot on its geographical features(特征). Mountains, oceans, deserts, and even the height of the land can change the weather around us. Geography works like a huge map, deciding whether a place is hot, cold, wet, or dry.
High mountains often create their own weather. For example when warm wet air climbs mountains, it rises and cools, causing heavy rainfall on one side. At the same time, the other side stays dry, making a “rain shadow (a dry area behind the mountains)”. This is why some valleys(山谷) are green, while nearby areas look like deserts.
How far a place is from the sea also matters. Coastal areas usually have comfortable temperatures because the ocean takes in heat in summer and gives it out in winter. Places far from the sea face hotter summers and colder winters. Latitude(纬度) plays a role too-places near the equator receive more direct sunlight, making them warmer all year round.
Altitude (height above sea level) changes temperature as well. Even near the equator, high mountains have snow on their tops. This happens because the temperature falls by about 6C for every 1,000 meters you go higher. This explains why people who live in high-altitude villages wear thick clothes even in warm areas.
Understanding geography helps us predict the weather and prepare for natural challenges. From farming to building cities, this knowledge shapes human life deeply.

I think plot is the hardest. It is not easy to make a good conflict. If the story has no strong conflict, it will be boring. It is difficult to let readers find the theme by themselves./I think characters are the hardest because you need to make them feel like real people. They should have both good points and bad points. If they are too perfect, readers cannot connect with them. V. One possible version:
In our study and life, we often face difficulties. To my mind, perseverance is the key to overcoming them.
I still remember the time when I struggled with English grammar, which used to make me very upset. I almost wanted to give up. But I kept reading English articles and doing exercises every day. Little by little, I made great progress and finally got good grades in the exam.
To me, perseverance means keeping trying even when things are hard. It helps us grow into a better person. My advice is that whenever you meet trouble, don’t lose heart. Hold on to your goals, and you will succeed at last.
