When Jack, my husband, and I drove past a fire station with a sign reading, “Are you ready for the next storm ” Our area had just been in the path of Hurricane Irma, causing downed trees and outages. We were stuck in the dark and cut off from the outside world.
We have had our share of storms in the past years — a snowstorm and other heavy snows that knocked down trees, sometimes up to a week at a time. Those days in a cold house weren’t fun, but we learned so much from those early storms, things that made later storms easier to bear.
Now we have stored up flashlights, lanterns and candles. We bought a battery-operated radio to keep up with the news. We stocked up on batteries so that we’d have plenty for extended power failures. We make sure our grill (烤架) is ready and its tank is full, and we purchase food that can be easily prepared and then cooked or heated on the grill. And we don’t forget to buy emergency chocolate! We have book lights to read in the dark. We keep our car gas tanks full and have emergency cash on hand.
We’re ready for the next storm, but we wouldn’t have learned to do all those things if we hadn’t encountered a storm in the past. The same is true spiritually. Those little storms in our lives are never fun, but they prepare us for the big storms — the big trials — that will come our way. They can teach us some valuable lessons.
Are you ready for the next storm Now is the time to get ready, not when the storm arrives.

A. It was instructive (有启发性的). B. It was satisfactory (令人满意的).
C. It was unbearable (难以忍受的). D. It was destructive (破坏性的).

D. Where there’s smoke, there’s fire.

On an early winter morning, a small group of students and tourists were taking pictures of the horses with their phones. These horses, known locally as takhi and globally as Przewalski’s horse, are unique. They are the only type that has never been trained and they are the fruits of one of the most successful ever wildlife reintroduction (再引进) plans of Hustai National Park.
“Horses are key to our culture. Everyone is glad to have them back,” says Dashpurev with a smile, who is in charge of Hustai National Park. Once hunted to extinction in the wild in the 1960s, Przewalski’s horses now number nearly 1,000, at three sites across Mongolia, as well as in China and Kazakhstan. The largest population — numbering 423 — is in central Mongolia’s Hustai National Park. These horses are descendants (后代) of 84 animals that were airlifted from European zoos in the 1990s.
“Before the reintroduction, no one believed we could save this species,” recalls Dashpurev. Now, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has downgraded Przewalski’s horse from “critically endangered” to “endangered”, marking a significant milestone in their recovery.
However, despite this success story, Mongolia faces numerous challenges in protecting its other species. Besides hunting, the climate emergency is putting more pressure. Temperatures are rising three times faster than the global average, bringing more extreme weather events that wipe out large numbers of animals.
Faced with this crisis, the government has taken actions to protect wild areas. In 1998, Mongolia promised to protect 30% of its territory by 2030 — a goal adopted by 100 other countries in 2021. So far it is on 21%. Last year, the president launched a drive to plant 1 billion trees by 2030 and tough fines have had success in stopping illegal hunting.
Yet these efforts are hamstrung (妨碍) by a lack of funding. “The government wants to grow the economy. That’s the key thing for them, so they are putting a lot of effort into agriculture and mining,” says Buuveibaatar, a scientist at the Wildlife Conservation Society, “Wildlife is ignored. As a result, some of its conservation areas are paper parks. The Przewalski’s horse reintroduction plan is an example of how to save wildlife. Now, the challenge lies in introducing this success to the rest of the country’s other wildlife.”
28. Why are these horses unique according to the passage
A. They can only be photographed in Mongolia.
B. They are the only true wild horse species.
C. They are successfully introduced species.
D. They are airlifted from European zoos.
29. What was the public’s attitude towards saving these horses before the reintroduction
A. Relieved (宽慰的) B. Supportive. C. Uninterested. D. Doubtful.
30. Why is the climate emergency mentioned in Paragraph 4
A. To stress the challenges facing wildlife protection.
B. To prevent the influence on wildlife in Mongolia.
C. To introduce the reasons for wildlife extinction.
D. To express the author’s feelings about the extinction.
31. What does Buuveibaatar imply in the last paragraph
A. Hustai National Park provides a positive model.
B. The government’s focus should be the economy.
C. Other countries can help by following the footsteps.
D. The Przewalski’s horse is the only one worth saving.
D
Teenagers who spend more time on after-school activities and less than two hours of screen time after school are more mentally healthy, according to a study published in the journal Preventive Medicine.
The study used information collected from more than 28,000 seventh-grade Canadian students between 2014 and 2018. The students first answered questions about their usage of screen time after school, including how much time they spent watching TV or something else. Then, students reported how many days they had taken part in after-school activities such as sports or arts programmes. After that, researchers asked students to describe their state of mind. For example, when given a statement such as “I start most days thinking that I will have a good day”, they could choose to what level they agreed with it on a scale (等级).
Researchers said in the study some of the results were expected. Students with no after-school activities usually had high levels of screen time, for example. And they expected girls would score higher on negative indicators (消极指标) of mental health. as earlier research had found that they tended to have higher levels of anxiety compared to boys.
What was noteworthy (值得注意的), researchers say, is that even among students who took part in after-school activities, 46% still went beyond the recommended screen time of two hours. At the same time, 67% of students who didn’t take part in after-school activities also had more than two hours of screen time. Together, this suggests high screen time among teenagers generally.
“The findings suggest that after-school activities are valuable for the happy growing of teenagers,” the study said. “While past studies have proved the importance of after-school activities for social and academic development, the present study shows their importance for good mental health results.”
32. Which of the following came last when students took part in the new study
A. Talking about their lifestyles.
B. Introducing their after-school activities.
C. Reporting their mental states on a scale.
D. Answering questions about screen time use.
33. What do the researchers find about teenage girls
A. They often have higher levels of satisfaction.
B. Few of them take part in after-school activities.
C. Too much screen time may be more harmful to them.
D. Addiction (瘾) has become a serious problem among them.
34. What does the author want to show by using the numbers in paragraph 4
A. Earlier findings about screen time are wrong.
B. No after-school activities mean no screen time.
C. High screen time is common among teenagers.
D. Screens attract teenagers more than after-school activities do.
35. Why are after-school activities so important according to the new study
A. They are good for teenagers’ physical health.
B. They allow teenagers to become better learners.
C. They encourage teenagers’ social development.
D. They help to improve teenagers’ mental health.
第二节 七选五(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)

Sometimes, you are not good at some of your subjects. 36 You probably think you will never be a top student. However, anyone can become a better student if you want to. Here’s how:
Plan your time carefully. When you plan your work, you should make a list of things that you have to do. After making this list, you should make a schedule of your time. First, your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc., then decide a good, regular time for studying. 37 A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems, but it will force you to realize what is happening to your time.
Find a good place to study. Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this space, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, radios, or television! When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject.
Make good use of your time in class. 38 Listening carefully in class means less work later. Taking notes will help you remember what the teachers say.
Study regularly. When you get home from school, go over your notes, review the important points that your teacher is going to discuss the next day, and read the material. 39 .
40 The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. It helps you remember your new knowledge. The world won’t end if you don’t pass a test, so don’t be over worried.
There are other methods that might help you with your study. You will probably discover them after you have tried these.
A. Maybe you are an average student.
B. Develop a good attitude about tests.
C. These will help you understand the next class.
D. Don’t forget to set aside enough time for entertainment.
E. No one can become a top student unless he or she works hard.

Today was the day for the picnic at Blackberry Farm! Arizona, her younger sister Ida, and their parents had been looking forward to it all week. Vivid images of rolling hills, friendly cows, and chasing chickens had filled the girls’ dreams.
“Ida, I baked cookies shaped like all the animals we might see!” Arizona announced proudly that morning, showing her sister the carefully decorated treats. There were horses, pigs, sheep, and even a few questionable-looking chickens.
“I want the horsey one!” little Ida exclaimed, jumping up and down.
“Not now, sweetie,” their mother said gently. “We’ll eat them at the picnic.”
After a final check, they piled into the car, laughter and chatter filling the space. They had driven for about twenty minutes when Arizona suddenly realized something.
“The cookies!” she cried out. “And the picnic blanket! They’re still on the kitchen table!”
The whole family let out a sound of disappointment. Dad sighed but made a U-turn. “No one wants a picnic without Arizona’s special cookies,” he said, trying to lighten the mood.
After getting the cookies, they hit the road again. Now running late, Dad made a decision. “I know a shortcut,” he declared, turning onto a narrow, unpaved road the family had never used before. “It should save us some time.”
Almost immediately, the smooth ride disappeared. The car bounced and shook violently on the stony path. A worrying clunk-clunk-thud started coming from underneath the car. Then, the engine died completely. Silence fell, broken only by Ida’s sobs.
Dad tried to restart the car, but in vain. He got out, looked underneath, and came back with a worried face. “We’re stuck.” A call to road service confirmed their fears: help was available, but the nearest roadside-service truck was two hours away. The two sisters sank back in their seats, their excitement replaced by a heavy cloud of disappointment. Their perfect picnic day was ruined.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150词左右;

M: I know this is one of your favorite locations for taking photos.
W: That’s right. This forest is filled with nature and wildlife.
M: What made you choose this field of photography Why not sports or people
W: I’ve always loved being outdoors. And I want to show people how wonderful nature is.
M: Do you have a favorite photo you’ve taken I saw one of your photos taken in Kenya. It looked amazing!
W: I do like that one. However, nothing could compare to the photo of a mother bear with her children I took in Alaska. Although it took me three hours, it was worth it. I’d love to get a picture of a special kind of bird in Scotland, but they’re so hard to find.
M: Do you have advice for someone who wants to become a photographer
W: Practice a lot. You don’t need expensive equipment to start.

原文:Chatsworth House is one of England’s most famous houses. It’s located in Derbyshire, within the Peak District National Park. In the 15th century, this land was acquired by the Leche family. In 1549, they sold all their rights in the area to Sir William Cavendish. The house was built by Sir William Cavendish and his wife, Bess of Hardwick. The Cavendish family’s influence and wealth grew over time. Throughout the years, the house has been rebuilt and improved by the family. In 1939, 250 students arrived from North Wales, and Chatsworth House became their school until 1946. Today, Chatsworth House is popular with visitors. It’s known for its art, gardens, and history. It has been used in many films over the years, including Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. The Cavendish family still live there, but parts of the house and grounds are open to the public.
