A
When it comes to food, you really can have too much of a good thing. These foods can be healthy, but only when you don’t overdo it.
Nuts
Nuts are an extraordinary source of healthy fats, which can be beneficial for maintaining a healthy heart. Despite the benefits, nuts are so percent fat and high in calories. Adding a few handfuls to your daily diet to replace unhealthy fats is ideal, but do not cat too much.
Cheese
Cheese (along with most dairy products) is a good source of calcium (钙) and protein (蛋白质), which can advance healthy bone development and heart strength. However, eating too much cheese is harmful to your health and actually cancels out any health benefits. And remember to select varieties that are lower in sodium and fat.
Bottled Green Juices
All-natural green juices are a healthy way to get the daily doses (剂量) of fruit and vegetables that most of us forget about. However, most bottled green juices are extraordinarily high in sugar, which can take away the health benefits that natural versions promise. When selecting a juice, make sure to keep an eye on the amount of sugar in each.
21. What do nuts and cheese have in common?
A. Both are high in calories. B. Both are good for heart.
C. Both are helpful in weight loss. D. Both are popular snacks.
22. What might be the main concern about bottled green juices according to the text?
A. They are not fresh. B. They are expensive.
C. They are not natural. D. They are high in sugar.
23. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To introduce healthy foods. B. To guide food selection.
C. To warn of overeating risks. D. To compare food benefits.

Dearest friends,
I hope this update finds you well. Once again, your letters since my last update have blown me away! It seems that our sewing (缝纫) school, Sewing Amazing, has touched many of you, and I am truly moved by your generosity in donating to our final-year students. We almost have enough money for each of them to have a machine of their own and I am so grateful to you who have made this happen.
We began Sewing Amazing back in 2017, when people out of work in Meriting asked for our help in teaching them skills that could enable them to have an income. Our two-year program starts with the basics of sewing in the first year. In the second year, students are tasked to make items (物品) for visitors to take home as gifts. We have seen many students successfully graduate from our training school and change their life.
Clemie, a single mother with two young children, is one of our second-year students. The family lives in a shipping container with an outside toilet. Life is hard for them. Faced with challenges of getting a job, she joined our sewing school and her life took a positive turn. The knowledge and techniques she has gained through the course have enabled her to design and create dresses for the community, generating an income that significantly improves her ability to support herself and her children.
Thanks to all of you, Clemie is one of the ladies who will be given a sewing machine when she graduates. This is going to give her the opportunity to develop her sewing skills and to make more items to sell. We are excited to see where the future takes her.
I hope you have enjoyed hearing a little more about Sewing Amazing and I will write soon to share more of our projects. Thank you once again for supporting our work.
Your friend,
Lisa

The color blue is very rare in nature, with fewer than one in 10 plants sporting the common human favorite. To present this color, they have to perform tricks to make themselves blue to the human eyes. In some lowers like bluebells, it primarily occurs when naturally occurring pigments (色素) are mixed the way you can mix different paints to change the color.
For blueberries, the blue comes on the naturally produced thin layer of wax (蜡) on their skin, which often serves as a self-cleaning coating or for added protection in the plant kingdom. “The blue of most fruits is in their pigmented juices. That isn’t the case with blueberries,” says Rox Middleton, co-author of a study published in Science Advances.
In the study, Middleton and his team examined the wax of a blueberry using an electron microscope. They found that the layer of wax is composed of tiny structures that work by scattering (散射) blue and UV light from the sun, while absorbing most of other colors of light. The arrangement makes the berries appear blue to humans and blue-UV to birds and other species that can see UV light, despite not having blue pigments in the waxy skin itself.
To look closer, they removed the outer wax and reshaped it on a black card. They created a new blue-UV coating and removed a very thin substance that creates color called a colorant from the skin. “The colorants scatter blue and UV, letting the other colors pass through without absorption,” says Middleton. “That’s why it’s so important that there are dark pigments underneath to ‘mop up’ the rest of the light. If there was a bright pigment or white scattering material underneath, that light would come through, and the color would look mixed or washed out.”
The study does show that nature has developed a “really neat trick” in the form of a very thin layer for an important colorant. Reproducing this colorant in the lab could make a way for new methods of creating pigments.
28. How do bluebells present blue to humans?
A. By blocking natural light. B. By combining the pigments.
C. By changing the outer colour. D. By producing various paints.
29. What did Middleton’s team discover about the wax layer on blueberries?
A. Its colorful pigments. B. Its internal mechanism.
C. Its chemical changes. D. Its unique components.
30. Which of the following can replace the underlined phrase “mop up” in paragraph 4?
A. Mix. B. Reflect. C. Recognize. D. Absorb.
31. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. The Science Behind Plant Colors B. The Invisible Pigments Of Blueberries
C. Technically, Blueberries Aren’t Blue D. Indeed, Color Blue Is Human Favorite
D
Andean bears, known for their image in the movie Paddington, are native to the Andes Mountains. Shy by nature, they usually avoid humans, making them difficult for scientists to study. Listed as endangered by the IUCN, they are threatened by habitat loss, climate change, and influence from humans. The bears can sometimes go after livestock (牲畜), but studies show their threat is not as serious as believed. A family of flowering plants called bromeliads (凤梨) forms a major part of Andean bears’ food, but little is known about their foraging (觅食) behavior across the cloud forest and grassland habitats.
In the new study, researchers surveyed two species of bromeliad in mountainous grasslands in and around Peru’s Manu National Park. They recorded the position of each plant and bear feeding signs, such as dug-up or partially eaten bromeliads. GPS-enabled collar (项圈) cameras observed that Andean bears were present at the sites. However, the surveys showed that the bears foraged food in just 16.7 % of the bromeliad areas they could find. Andean bears were more likely to forage in the dry season when young and soft plants were healthier for them to eat. They seldom foraged for bromeliads outside the national park, where livestock feed.
Mountainous grasslands next to cloud forest are key habitats for Andean bears, and governments should consider how livestock influence this ecosystem. Although the bears avoided areas with livestock, they did forage in areas where livestock had been kept several years ago. This behavioral adaptability may help them recover lost habitats quickly with specific protection measures, the researchers say.
The researchers add: “The data (数据) from the surveys helps us understand the Andean bear and its habitat, and develop more effective protection strategies. The GPS camera collars use little electricity, but we stress one major limitation-the inability to collect information beyond daylight hours. Infrared LED technology will soon solve this problem in years to come.”
32. What makes studying Andean bears difficult?
A. They live in the wild. B. They have a special diet.
C. They avoid human contact. D. They attack people sometimes.
33. What was a finding about Andean bears through GPS-enabled cameras?
A. They ate up all the bromeliads. B. They foraged outside the national park.
C. They were very picky about their food. D. They were short of food in the dry season.
34. What can be inferred from paragraph 3?
A. Andean bears are highly adaptable. B. Andean bears have recovered lost habitats.
C. Livestock are mainly from cloud forests. D. Livestock are in harmony with Andean bears.
35. What is the problem with the collars according to the researchers?
A. They waste a lot of power. B. They do harm to bears’ health.
C. They cannot provide data at night. D. They don’t work in cold temperatures.

Last month, it was my friend Emily’s birthday, and she invited us to her house to celebrate. I’m really excited because Emily always gives me special birthday gifts, so I want to do something good in return. I decided that, instead of just buying her a gift, I’d bake (烤) her a cake. I’m not a master in the kitchen, but how hard could it be to bake a simple chocolate cake?
The day before the party, I went to the store to pick up everything I needed: flour (面粉), sugar, eggs, and, of course, chocolate. I even bought a nice toy to make the cake look beautiful. I was feeling pretty confident.
When I got home, I started mixing everything together. It was going smoothly and the kitchen was filled with the sweet smell of baking. But then, disaster struck. I was rushing to get the cake finished, and in a hurry, I took the wrong bag. Without even thinking, I put in what I thought was sugar, but it was actually salt!
The cake looked perfect when it came out-golden brown with a shiny top. The smell was so amazing that I couldn’t wait to show it at the party. I imagined everyone was surprised at my baking skills and how impressed Emily would be. But little did I know, my cake was about to become the most memorable birthday cake ever.
The next day, I arrived at Emily’s party with the cake. The moment came when we cut the cake. Emily, being the birthday girl, was the first to taste the cake. She carefully cut a piece, and with a big smile, she took the first bite (咬). But then... her expression changed. Her eyes widened for a second, she looked at me, clearly puzzled.
“Uh... are you sure this is a cake?” she asked, trying hard not to laugh.

【答案】 I immediately took a bite myself, and my heart dropped. The moment the flavor hit my tongue, I knew something had gone horribly wrong. It was so salty! Not the rich, sweet chocolate cake I had imagined! I turned bright red, and the entire room went dead silent. Then, as if planned, everyone burst out laughing. Emily, trying to keep it together, finally managed to say, “Well, this is definitely a new flavor I wasn’t expecting! A salty chocolate cake... that’s an interesting choice.” I felt my face get even hotter. “I-uh-I think I used salt instead of sugar!” I stammered, hardly able to look anyone in the eye. “I’m so sorry, everyone. I totally messed up!”
But instead of making me feel worse, Emily just laughed harder “Honestly, it’s not the worst cake I’ve ever had,” she said, still giggling. “And hey, at least it’s something we’ll never forget!” At that point, everyone joined in, and the room was filled with laughter. We joked the cake as “legendary birthday cake” and it became the highlight of Emily’s birthday, which relieved my embarrassment to a large degree. I was soon involved in the cheerful atmosphere and we all had a pleasant time at Emily’s birthday party. It may have been a baking disaster, but it was surely the most unforgettable moment of the celebration!
