When my mother passed away a few years ago, my father was left alone in the large house they had shared for
50 years. Without her to watch out for him, he was worried about who would find him and help if “something
happened”.
My sister and I live in other states, so we hit on the idea that Dad could email us every morning when he
awoke. Then “the Morning Report” was born.
He’s usually up by the crack of dawn, and his half a dozen or so sentences are waiting for me in my inbox
when I wake up. If there’s no email, I call him, or my sister does, to make sure everything is fine. The reports have
become more than an everyday check though; they’re a sort of diary, a catalyst (催 化 剂 ) for more extended
conversations, and source of insight into his life.
Through these emails, Dad tells us about his routines. He might be heading to the grocery store for bananas,
going to his cardiac-rehab (心脏康复) exercise class, or having lunch with friends. Recently he told us, “I’ve
climbed halfway up Mount Washington!” Given his age and distance from New Hampshire, such a hike had been
unlikely.
Each email closes with “All my love, Dad.” When my mother was alive, that feeling was normally reserved
for her. Now that she is gone, he shares those feelings and his experiences with us. For me, what started as a simple
security measure has spawned deeper closeness.
I’m grateful my father is still able to manage his computer and the Internet. I know the day will come when he’
ll no longer be able to write the reports, and we’ll have to find other ways to keep track of one another. But until
then, they are our way of knowing that another normal day has begun.
24. What was the original purpose of “the Morning Report”
A. To ensure the father’s safety.
B. To track the father’s daily routines.
C. To keep the father from feeling lonely.
D. To help the father manage his large house.
25. What can be inferred about the father’s current life
A. He leads a lonely life. B. He stays active and engaged.
C. He misses his wife very much. D. He is learning to use a computer.
26. Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word “spawned” in paragraph 5
A. Hidden. B. Weakened. C. Shadowed. D. Created.
27. What does the author imply about the future of “the Morning Report”
A. It will continue unchanged as long as the father lives.
B. It may eventually be replaced by other ways of staying in touch.
C. It has become less meaningful as the father grows older.
D. It will be taken over by the sister when the father can no longer write.
C
In recent years, consumers have increasingly sought “clean-label” foods — products made with natural
ingredients. This trend has driven scientists to search for safe, natural preservatives (防腐剂,保护剂). They have
turned their attention to a part of the cashew nut (腰果) that is often thrown away — the shell. From it, they
extract Cashew Nut Shell Liquid (CNSL) and find that it contains special natural substances that can fight bacteria
and prevent decay (变质). While this dark liquid has been studied for use in industries like paint and medicine, its
potential for preserving food had not been fully explored until now.
The scientists designed a careful experiment to test whether CNSL could help preserve beef, one of the most
widely consumed meats globally. They applied the liquid to beef samples at different concentrations (含量、浓度).
Some meat was left untreated as controls. The samples were then stored under different conditions — some at
room temperature and others in refrigeration — for two weeks.
During storage, a detailed microbiological evaluation was conducted to quantify total viable (活菌) counts and
specific spoilage organisms (腐 败 菌 ), including Pseudomonas spp., Clostridium spp., and Proteus spp.
Physicochemical analyses monitored changes in pH and water activity, while bacteria growth was assessed during
storage at room temperature. The scientists discovered that the CNSL-treated meat showed significantly less
bacterial growth than untreated meat. The effect was strongest at higher concentrations, with a 2.0% solution
providing excellent protection while maintaining meat quality. Even at room temperature, it effectively delayed the
meat’s souring process and reduced bacteria growth, helping the beef stay fresh-looking longer.
The researchers note that further studies are needed to understand whether the liquid affects the taste and
texture of the beef, and how it might be combined with modern packaging for even better results. Still, this study
opens a window into nature’s own way of keeping food fresh — hidden inside a humble cashew shell.
28. Why are scientists studying cashew nut shells
A. To reduce waste in the food industry.
B. To improve the taste of processed foods.
C. To find natural alternatives to artificial preservatives.
D. To develop new industrial materials for paint and medicine.
29. What was the primary focus of the microbiological evaluation
A. The variety of cashew species.
B. The safety of refrigerated beef.
C. The changes in pH and water activity.
D. The effectiveness of CNSL against bacteria.
30. What does the experiment suggest about CNSL
A. It can improve meat quality over time.
B. It performs best at room temperature.
C. It speeds up the meat’s souring process.
D. Its concentration and the storage life are closely related.
31. What is the author’s attitude towards the future of CNSL
A. Fully convinced. B. Cautiously optimistic.
C. Hesitant and doubtful. D. Neutral and objective.
D
Australia’s tropical forests have become the world’s first to emit (排放) more carbon into the atmosphere than
they are taking in, as a new study report in Nature. This switch is an alarm bell for the planet’s tropical forests,
sounding as global leaders prepare for the COP30 meeting in the Amazon rainforest to address the crisis of global
climate change.
The long-term analysis of Australia’s rainforests from 1971 to 2019 revealed that the forests’ woody biomass
— its hard branches and trunks — has been shrinking since around the year 2000. Rising temperatures, droughts
and tropical cyclones (气 旋 ) driven by human activities have dramatically increased tree death rate, releasing
stored carbon back into the atmosphere. Surprisingly, the extra atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO ) didn’t boost
plant growth as climate models predicted, likely due to limited availability of nutrients plants need like phosphorus
(磷) and other basic ones — a factor that must be considered in estimating the fate of forests.
The Amazon rainforest, which spans an area nearly as large as the continental United States and is currently
shouldering a quarter of land-based carbon dioxide annually, is also at risk. It suffered its worst drought in 2024,
with deforestation reaching 17 percent. Scientists have warned it could face widespread dieback by 2035 under the
pressure of climate change, deforestation and extreme weather like storms. Other tropical forests face similar
threats. Africa’s Congo Basin forests, once relatively stable, have shown increased tree death rate since 2010.
Southeast Asia’s forests are endangered by the development of urbanization and agriculture.
A report made by the U.N. Environment Programme (UNEP) notes that about 291 million of the world’s 1.6
billion hectares of tropical forest are delicate, easily erased off from the green block forever. Protecting these
forests will require global financial investments to triple to $ 300 billion by 2030, yet global efforts for the
protection are falling short of the intended commitments. “Tropical forests are huge carbon reservoirs and we must
cherish the forest carbon stocks already built up over centuries.” says the programme manager Wannes Hubau in
the report. “Losing them would be like setting off a carbon bomb, worsening climate change.”
32. What happened to the Australia’s tropical forests
A. They were expanding rapidly.
B. They became a carbon-friendly place.
C. Their woody biomass was on increase.
D. They were turning into carbon emitters.
33. What might limit Australia’s forest growth with more CO2
A. Long-term data analysis. B. Limited basic nutrients.
C. Storage of carbon in trunks. D. Climate model expectations.
34. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. Tropical forests will die back by 2035. B. Farming destroys forests in tropical regions.
C. Tropical forests face growing global threats. D. Droughts cause most rainforest loss worldwide.
35. What can we learn from the UNEP report
A. Few tropical forests is at high risk.
B. Tropical Forest conservation lacks funds.
C. The death rate of tropical forests is declining.
D. Africa’s forests have the highest tree death rate.

Getting older means greater maturity and wisdom. 36 In a society that is aging fast, it has become
crucial to find ways to prevent related mental and emotional disorders. Music emerges as a promising tool for
promoting well-being of the elderly.
Music has a great power to cause strong emotions and intense pleasure. 37 Singing and dancing to
music with others is not only fun but also improves mood. Musical activities are great ways to reduce stress
because they take our minds off problems. They also help us feel less lonely and more connected with other people.
38 A song may become a soundtrack for a particular time, such as a delightful party with friends that
you had a long time ago. Listening to that song allows you to remember all the happy memories from that time.
Finally, music contributes to keeping our thinking skills sharp. It makes our brains work hard in unique ways
to understand the rhythm and melody. 39 For example, research demonstrates that listening to classical
background music while performing cognitive tasks can enhance specific mental functions in elderly individuals,
particularly processing speed and working memory capacity.
In conclusion, music is a powerful tool to fight against aging-related emotional and cognitive problems. It is
an enjoyable and social activity, available to anyone regardless of their background or previous musical experience.
40
A. Music can also open forgotten doors to our memories.
B. Recalling happy memories can lift our mood on a bad day.

D. This helps people feel better when they are depressed or anxious.
E. However, it often involves a series of physical and mental challenges.
F. The ability to form new memories is essential for processing information.
G. Therefore, simple strategies like this should be a key part of promoting healthy aging.

It took only seconds to realize what had happened. My car had been hit by another vehicle as I was starting to
exit the underground parking garage near my office.
When I got out to speak with the man who had just hit my car, he asked if I was okay. He looked quite
concerned and started to apologize, his voice trembling slightly. “I am so sorry, ma’am. Are you okay ” To be
truthful, I didn’t know what to say.
Not wanting to get into an argument with this stranger, I suggested we exchange our insurance information.
Neither of us was injured, and the damage wouldn’t prevent us from driving our cars. I told the man my plan was to
stop at the nearby police station to file a report and suggested he do the same.
While driving to the police station, I kept thinking about my bad luck that some ignorant guy sped down the
lane behind the building where I parked my car. We both arrived. I complained about the accident to the police
officer who was filing the report. Then the officer walked out to the parking lot with us to take a look at the damage
to my car.
“Doesn’t look too bad, lady. Please come and collect the accident report in three days,” he said. Annoyed over
the sudden trouble, I claimed $ 100 for the discomfort and inconvenience it caused. To my surprise, the man
handed me the money without any protest. Before leaving, he murmured, “I hope you’re okay. Sometimes small
accidents have hidden impacts. Reach out to me if you need anything else.”
Still angry the next day, I ignored the messages he sent me inquiring about my physical health. This anger
went on for a couple of days until I received the official report informing us of the “Rules of the Road” related to
exiting a parking garage. As drivers exiting the parking garage should give way to vehicles on the main road, I was
found to be at fault. Besides, the police investigation proved that the guy did not exceed the speed limit. Recalling
what I had done, I felt so ashamed.

第一节:参考范文
Dear Editor,
I’m Li Hua, a student from our school. I’m writing to offer some suggestions on how to reduce
greenhouse gas emissions personally and socially, in response to your essay activity themed “Go
Green, Cut Carbon”.
First, individuals should choose low-carbon travel, such as walking, cycling or taking public
transport instead of driving private cars. Second, we ought to form the habit of saving energy,
turning off lights and other electrical appliances when not in use. Third, the society should promote
renewable energy, like solar and wind power, and encourage more factories to adopt
environmentally-friendly production methods.
I hope my suggestions will be helpful. Let’s work together to protect our planet.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
第二节:参考范文
I told myself that I must do something. Since I was at fault, returning that $100 was the least I
could do! Fortunately, I still had his earlier messages in my phone. Scrolling through my phone, I
quickly found his number. Gathering my courage, I dialed it with trembling fingers. When he
realized it was me, he sounded surprised yet concerned, asking whether I was okay. Overwhelmed
with guilt about my rudeness, I stammered out(结结巴巴地说出) the request for a meeting. He
agreed warmly and we decided to grab a coffee at a cafe near my place.
The next afternoon, I arrived at the appointed cafe in advance. Soon, the man arrived with a
relaxed expression, easing my awkwardness instantly. Pressing the money into his hands, I repeated
my sincere apology. With my insistence, he took the money and kindly offered to buy me the coffee.
Still ashamed yet curious, I asked why he wasn’t annoyed since it was my fault. A smile carried his
words to me, “To forgive others is just to be kind to ourselves.” They landed so directly that I couldn’
t help smiling at the pointless anger I had held on to. With a lighter heart, I left the cafe, grateful for
this gift of forgiveness.
