Even in December, 63 — year — old Ren Jianguo gets up early before 5 am every day to spread corn on the riverbanks to make sure thousands of migratory birds (候鸟) have enough energy to make it through the winter.
“Every day at 6 o’clock in the morning, these birds leave their nests for food. We spread 150 kilograms of corn on the riverbanks before the birds go home,” Ren said. Over the past 27 years, Ren has been one of many volunteers protecting migratory birds on Changbai Island in the town center, where local residents label him as “Uncle Bird”.
Uncle Bird is busy with his work in winter, as it is the season when many migratory birds fly to Changbai Island to avoid the biting cold days in Siberia, Russia.
“As long as they choose to stay in this city, there should be people to take care of them. When it comes to the harsh winter and it becomes difficult to find food, I call for donations to guarantee their survival during the winter,” Ren said.
For Ren himself, a simple building near the riverbank has almost become his “second home”, a place from which he can patrol along the banks, observe the dynamics of the birds, educate the public about bird conservation, and after a long day of work, light a fire and enjoy a warm meal. When he receives a report of an injured bird, he takes his boat or his electric scooter to provide help. “I simply want this to be a warm and welcoming place for birds when they choose to stay here for a temporary rest,” he said.
“There is no need to describe the changes in the past 30 years, as we can see with our own eyes that the entire environment is getting better and better. Thirty years ago, it was impossible to see more than 8,000 birds together in the urban area. However, I think there’s still a long way to go to raise public understanding.” Ren said.

From seeing problems in a new way to developing discipline (自律), expressing creativity to working as a team, music has helped many winners in both work and life.
Music has often helped Nobel winners think and process scientific information in a new way. Albert Einstein was influenced by his mother who taught him to play the violin at a very early age. Furthermore, the cooperation between the members of a music band can be compared with the team effort found within a research group. According to Medicine winner James Allison, it is necessary in both fields to build a team where each individual makes their own contribution to the overall work. However, it is important that the communication between the members works so smoothly that each individual also knows what needs to be done to achieve breakthroughs. As James Allison stated, “Every now and then my lab has been as well tuned — it feels like a really good band.” The concept of great teamwork leading to great success can be applied to both science and music.

The company Colossal Biosciences claims that it has taken “a major step” towards saving an endangered marsupial (有袋类动物) called the northern quoll.
The northern quoll is a small marsupial found in northern regions of Australia. Its population has dropped a lot because of introduced predators (捕食性动物) such as cats and the loss of habitat. But the biggest threat is the invasive cane toad, which produces a toxin (毒素) that kills animals.
Stephen Frankenberg at the University of Melbourne and his colleagues want to edit the genes of the northern quoll to make it able to resist the toxin. “We only change a few parts of the quoll’s DNA,” Frankenberg says. “Nature might make this change on its own, but that would take thousands of years if quolls lived with toads all that time.” If these gene — edited quolls can stand the poison well, they will have a high chance of survival when they eat a cane toad.
“Other ways to save them have failed,” Frankenberg added. For example, his team tried to teach northern quolls to avoid cane toads, but this did not work on a large scale. Yet not much progress has been made in changing the quoll’s genes. In 2020, the team had used gene editing to introduce toxin resistance into cells growing in a dunnart, which is in the same family as quolls, but is easier to work with.
Now, the team is about to release a study showing that the edited dunnart cells are 45 times as resistant to the toxin of cane toads as normal ones. However, the real challenge isn’t editing genes in the lab. Changing the genes of animals is easy for well — studied ones like mice, but often fails in other species. It needs many animals to test on. That is especially difficult with endangered species. “I like the idea and think it is worth exploring,” says Merlin Crossley at the University of New South Wales in Sydney. “But the hardest part is still to come,” he says.

In order to help students understand the importance of online safety, last week witnessed our school held an activity called “Online Safety on Campus”.
During the event, students attended an informative lecture on cyber security. Additionally, each class held a themed meeting where students discussed the golden rule of the Internet — being polite and not stirring up trouble online.

Two days later, Bilal and his grandparents started their journey. The following days witnessed Bilal went to the fields, wandered around the fields full of beautiful flowers and fruit trees, and learned how farmers harvest the crops. W: Me, too. It’s due in a week and a half, after all. I think we’re going to get a pretty clear result.
M: Most likely. The fish in the colder water are not as orange as the fish in the warmer water.
W: I agree. I know it’s hard to keep the water exactly the right temperature in this lab, but you can see the difference in the fish.
M: Yeah, we’ve had some differences in the water temperature, especially at night.
W: I think we should write our lab report as soon as possible.
M: I’m afraid I don’t agree. Maybe we’ll get clearer results if we give the experiment more time.

W: Well, we certainly have a busy day ahead of us, so let’s get started, shall we Let’s have a look at the map of the museum now.
The door on the right of the entrance hall leads into the gift shop and ticket center. Once we pick up our entrance tickets, I’d ask everyone to put their bags and coats in the storage area.
Now, once you come back into the entrance hall, the door on the opposite side to the gift shop leads into the art gallery. There is a special exhibition there at the moment. If you continue on up the entrance hallway that leads into the main exhibition center, on the back left-hand side, there are some toilets. Beside the toilets, you’ll find the 3D theater. I strongly recommend that you make time for the 30-minute presentation in the theater.
Running along the right-hand side of the main exhibition center is the Modern Art Studio. Here, not only can you view some of the most famous works of the 20th century, but you can also attend a workshop run by a local artist. OK, that’s the art museum.
