B Raj Patel was 5, traveling with his family to India from England.A young girl, no older than 12, approached their car, carrying a crying baby, begging for money and food. “My parents embarrassingly pushed some money out to her from the window,”Patel says. “Since then, the journey has been to figure out why this stuff happens.” Upon returning to England, Patel decided to rent out his toys and raise money to stop hunger. It didn’t take him long to realize his attempts would not fix the problem. While attending Oxford University, Patel had an idea to shift his major to mathematics, believing that mathematics could handle the crisis of hunger and poverty (贫困).But as he dived deeper into the topic, he learned the political and systemic side of the story. So he changed his undergraduate degree back to economics and added the study of philosophy and politics to his pursuits (事业). After graduation, he worked for the World Bank and the United Nations. But even that, he says, didn’t lead to workable solutions (解决方案). His first book, Stuffed and Starved, was a breakout work written for a general audience. While living in Africa, Patel created a number of documentaries but none gained much popularity until he met Anita Chitaya, an activist in Bwabwa, a remote village in Malawi. Anita works with a local organization that has fought hunger in Malawi for decades. She helps farmers to experiment with crops to grow more nutritious food. Her story evolved into an 11-year project -The Ants&the Grasshopper, which earned the Moving Mountains Award. As the decade of research, filming and editing carries on, this drought-stricken village goes from being.self-sufficient through sustainable farming practices to struggling to grow enough nutritious food and access clean, drinkable water. Climate change ended up being another part of the story. Patel knows that he needs to find other ways to reach audiences. He released a widely shared YouTube video about capitalism, chicken nuggets (鸡块) and the global hunger crisis. He’s given 20-minute TED Talks that summarize the intentions of his books. No matter what gets thrown his way, Patel seems to course-correct in order to continue pursuing his mission. 24. What excited Patel’s pursuit of his career? A. A beggar-led crowd. B. A fund-raising event. C. A chance encounter with a needy girl. D. A narrow escape from a car accident. 25. Why did Patel shift his major to mathematics? A. He felt he was good at it. B. He disliked boring economic theories. C. He was eager to learn its political and systemic side. D. He considered it as a solution to the hunger and poverty crisis. 26. What is The Ants & the Grasshopper mainly about? A. Anita’s journey to tackle food crisis. B. Causes of climate change in Malawi. C. Bwabwa’s remarkable transformation. D. Patel’s personal experience in Bwabwa. 27. What did Patel do to attract more attention to global hunger? A. He shot funny videos. B. He made presentations. C. He cut the price of his books. D. He conducted collaborative research. C Scientists say a huge percentage of bird species are in danger because their habitats, or homelands, are disappearing. Traditional migration paths take birds through countries that are not protecting the places for birds to stop, rest and feed. The scientists studied the migration or flight paths of almost 1,500 species. They decided that 91 percent of them passed through dangerous areas. The major danger for migratory birds is development. Buildings and pavements have covered the places where birds stop and feed as they move from one part of the world to another. One of the scientists who worked on the study says “Many of these important places have been lost to land reclamation because of urban, industrial and agricultural land expansion”. The problem, according to scientists, is that many of these small birds die along their migration paths because they don’t have a safe place to feed and rest. There is no place to restore their energy for the next part of their journey. Countries in North Africa, Central Asia and those along the coasts of East Asia are having the most difficult time in protecting land. The scientists say these countries do not have enough areas that are safe for birds. One species that doesn’t exist now is the Eskimo curlew. “Our world gets poorer every time we lose a species,” one of the scientists says. The researchers say countries need to work together and come up with safe stopping areas for birds that pass through their boundaries. For example, one country might have preserved safe zones for migrating birds. But a neighbor country might not. A bird might die. One scientist who is not connected with the report tells Los Angeles Times that while some habitats are changing, more work can be done to make urban areas safe for birds. He says small changes, like planting more native plants or keeping cats out of the areas birds would be likely to use, could make a big difference. 28. What mainly caused the disappearing of birds’ habitats? A. The decrease of awareness to protect birds. B. Natural disasters. C. Overuse of land by human beings. D. The rising sea level. 29. What may be the main reason for many birds’ death on the way of migration? A. Tiredness and hunger. B. Beast attack on the ground. C. Hunting of humans. D. The long journey. 30. According to the last two paragraphs, how should we protect the migrating birds? A. By keeping fewer cats or dogs. B. By restoring their destroyed habitats. C. By helping change the birds’ migration paths. D. By preserving the ecological environments on their migration paths. 31. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage? A. To call on people to protect the birds’ habitats. B. To analyze the reasons for disappearing of birds’ habitats. C. To offer some solutions to the problem of birds’ habitats. D. To tell us a huge percentage of bird species are in danger. D A new study suggests that 20 minutes of sunlight before waking can help fight morning fatigue (疲惫), offering a potential solution for those struggling with long-term sleep insufficiency. While inadequate sleep poses health risks, simply sleeping more isn’t always practical or effective, as many still wake up tired. Researchers at Osaka Metropolitan University found that pre-waking sunlight exposure may reduce fatigue, building on previous studies showing artificial dawn simulation can help. However, artificial light sources, often placed at bedside level, can lead to inconsistent exposure due to movement during sleep. A more stable alternative? Natural sunlight, which is freely available in most areas. For those without light pollution, leaving curtains open at night allows natural dawn light to enter. Others may use motorized curtains that reopen at a set morning time. To test this approach, the researchers conducted a crossover randomized controlled trial with 19 university students (ages 20–30) who maintained regular sleep schedules. Participants slept in a university lab furnished like a bedroom. All windows were shaded except for one facing east, making it the only source of natural light. The researchers installed light-shielding curtains on the east-facing window, plus a motorized device they could set to open the curtains at a specific time each morning. They used this setup to create three situations for participants: natural light exposure for 20 minutes before waking, natural light exposure from dawn until waking, and no natural light exposure. Results showed that both sunlight-exposed situations improved alertness and reduced self-reported sleepiness compared to no light. However, 20 minutes of pre-waking sunlight was most effective, significantly lowering objective sleepiness (measured via brain activity) compared to the other conditions. The team suggests prolonged exposure from dawn may disrupt sleep by providing too much light too soon. Daisuke Matsushita, a living environment design scientist involved in the study, hopes future research will optimize natural light exposure for better wakefulness, accounting for seasonal and daily variations. This could lead to more comfortable and energizing mornings. 32. Why is artificial dawn simulation sometimes ineffective in reducing morning fatigue? A. Because it requires expensive equipment. B. Because it cannot mimic natural sunlight accurately. C. Because it only works in areas without light pollution. D. Because it may be interrupted by the users’ movement. 33. The word “light-shielding” in paragraph 4 can probably be replaced by ______. A. light-emitting B. light-blocking C. light-reflecting D. light-absorbing 34. What can we learn about the study? A. Only the window facing south let light in. B. No light exposure improved sleeping quality. C. Participants were required to sleep in three situations. D. Two sunlight-exposed methods were equally effective. 35. What is the main idea of the passage? A. Motorized curtains can improve sleep quality. B. People should sleep longer to fight morning fatigue. C. Exposure to light sources is likely to solve sleep problems. D. 20 minutes of pre-waking sunlight may reduce morning tiredness. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 We love our pets. In fact, for most people they are more than me re pets and become more like family members. It is likely then that their owners, at some point, are going to want photographs of their furry friends. However, pet photography presents its own special problems. ____36____ If you’re thinking of trying pet photography, here are a few pointers to get you started. Find out about your subject’s personality and habits. Where does it nod off if the sun is out? What is its favourite toy? ____37____ It’s also worth spending a little time getting to know the animal yourself. Cats, dogs, horses, they all have personality, and you need to ensure they are comfortable being around you, and you around them. ____38____ If the pet is comfortable with you, and if it isn’t too nervous, fill the frame with the pet’s face. Get the eyes nice and sharp. Just like humans, this is a natural point of focus, although focusing on the nose or mouth of a dog or cat can also make for an interesting image in its own right. See the world from pets’ perspective. If you photograph a pet while you’re standing up, all you’re going to see is the top of their head and their backs, not what you want for a portrait. Get down to their eye level. Try pre-focusing your camera and just holding it at ground level so you can look up at the pet. ____39____. Bring a flash with the owner’s permission. While greeting or playing with a new pet, fire a couple of test flashes away from them to see their reaction. In daylight particularly, they never seem to mind the flash at all. ____40____. A. Think about getting in close to your subject. B. It’s worth a try just for a new angle on things. C. Animals can be unpredictable, lazy, aggressive and excitable. D. A good photograph focuses on the subject and not the background. E. If they do mind, then stick with natural light and use a white reflector. F. The more you shoot, the greater your chances of hitting that perfect shot! G. Take time to chat with the owner and observe your subject to gain some insight. 第三部分 语言运用(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 When I started my own technology writing business, it began well — I landed my first contract, though I wondered if it was too good to be true. I’d often tie his shoes or prepare another glass of water for him. My mom saw my larger size and strong body as a sign that I was to be a kind of guardian angel (守护天使) for Brian. However, that was not the case. One day our school sponsored a pumpkin-carving contest. First prize was $100, and I knew just how I would spend it. There was a brand-new game I was dying to own. So I decided the first place bonus definitely had to land in my pocket. When I had to carve the perfect pumpkin I’d picked out, it dawned on me that with my big clumsy fingers I’d surely screw it up (搞砸). I thought of Brian’s smaller, delicate hands and knew he was the man for the job. I immediately begged Brian. Unexpectedly, he asked for a cut. That was fifty-fifty. Quickly doing the math in my head, I figured out even if I split (分摊) the first prize, I’d still have enough cash for the game. So I gave in to Brian’s demands. With skillful hands Brian carved the perfect face, and now we had the best pumpkin ever. Then the unexpected happened: We came in second. Unfortunately, second prize was only $50, and I needed every penny of that to buy the game. The day of the awards ceremony, the principal handed over the money to me because Brian was home, sick with cold. If he really wanted to win, he would have been here today, I thought to myself, justifying stealing the cash from under poor Brian’s runny nose. With hardly a thought, I ran to the store and bought my dream game. That night when Brian asked if we had won, I denied, afraid to look into his eyes. The whole thing was never mentioned again until the day when Brian was packing for college. I played my usual role in helping him pack when I came across an old album filled with photos he had taken as the school photographer. 注意: (1)续写词数应为150左右; (2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Paragraph 1: I was enjoying the photos when one caught my eye. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: “You actually knew and didn’t say anything?“ I was shocked. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 答案版 1. You’ve always had a passion for Chinese culture, and I’m sure this will be a great experience for you. Here are some tips: First, choose a piece that resonates with you — poetry or essays with vivid imagery work well. Second, practice pronunciation carefully using pinyin and mimic native speakers’ intonation for emotional tone. Lastly, add subtle body language like hand gestures or facial expressions to connect with the text. Trust your preparation and enjoy the process! I hope you shine on stage and make unforgettable memories. Best wishes for your success! Warm regards, Li Ming 答案】Paragraph 1: I was enjoying the photos when one caught my eye. It was a picture of the pumpkin we had carved together. Underneath, Brian had written, “My first real win with my brother. Even if we didn’t get first, it was a victory because we worked as a team.” Seeing those words, a wave of guilt washed over me. I remembered how I had selfishly taken all the money and lied to him. I realized how much I had let him down. I turned to Brian, ready to confess everything. Paragraph 2: “You actually knew and didn’t say anything?” I was shocked. Brian just smiled gently and said, “I always knew. But I also knew that you needed that game more than the money at that time. And I was proud of our teamwork, not the prize. I hoped one day you’d understand the real meaning of winning together.” His words made me feel even more ashamed. I apologized sincerely, vowing to make it up to him. From then on, I truly understood my role as his guardian angel and the importance of true brotherhood. 展开更多...... 收起↑ 资源预览 当前文档不提供在线查看服务,请下载使用!
