I was a student at the University of Cincinnati’s music academy, looking for
something to do outside of musical harmony classes. Somehow, I found myself at a
printer’s office in Northern Kentucky, making final edits for Ed’s small Cincinnati
newspaper. It wasn’t until I’d been there a few months that I realized how much Ed
changed the world around him and changed my life in the process.
Ed started the paper because the local daily papers of the time turned a blind eye to
some problems in the local community and gave little space to social issues affecting
disadvantaged groups. Ed’s paper was a small, 16-page monthly one, handed out for
free in bars.
He often encouraged “non-writers” to write if they had a story to tell. Some of
them were inexperienced writers. He worked with them until the words better
expressed their ideas. When I turned in a story about an unpopular topic, he only
第 4 页 共 12 页
asked, “Is it true ” and “Does it affect people ” Satisfied by my answers, he ran the
story.
What drove Ed It wasn’t fame, for the paper’s limited resources (资源) kept him
unknown; it wasn’t money, for he ran the paper at a deficit (赤字) for its whole life of
eight years. More than once, I remembered him having to choose between paying his
rent and paying the printer. Perhaps his real drive was revealed in a recent phone
conversation. While talking about a common friend, I said, “He fought the good fight.”
Ed responded, “The good fight’s never over.”
I don’t believe events make heroes; I believe heroes are the result of long-standing
goodness. Ed’s story proved the value of constancy (坚定不移 ) and expressed the
significance of working for good causes. He showed how one person, working
tirelessly, could help a population get over its problems. Above all, his example
showed me the necessity of making my own contributions to the causes I believe in.
24. Why did Ed set up the Cincinnati newspaper
A. To promote new writers’ works.
B. To improve his printer’s business.
C. To find talent from disadvantaged groups.
D. To reflect overlooked social problems.
25. What is Ed’s attitude towards storytellers like the author
A. Unfavorable. B. Supportive. C. Doubtful. D. Picky.
26. What does the “good fight” in paragraph 4 mainly refer to
A. Making a name for himself.
B. Overcoming funding problems.
C. Doing worthy and kind causes.
D. Creating a significant profit.
27. Which of the following can best describe Ed
A. Determined and caring. B. Proud and single-minded.
C. Frank and generous. D. Careful and hard-working.

AI could make it less necessary to learn foreign languages. That is good news for
travellers, bad news for soulful connections.
Travel has long been a motivator for study — unless people start to feel AI tools
第 5 页 共 12 页
offer a good-enough service. Some are concerned that apps are turning language
acquisition into declining pursuit. Douglas Hofstadter, a writer, has argued that
something important will disappear when people talk through machines. He describes
giving a hesitant, difficult speech in Mandarin, which required a lot of work but
offered a sense of achievement at the end. Who would show off taking a plane to the
top of Mount Qomolangma
Others are less worried. Most people do not move abroad or have the kind of
sustained contact with a foreign culture that requires them to put in the work to
become fluent. Nor do most people learn languages for the purpose of humanising
themselves or training their brains. On their holiday, they just want a beer and pizza.
As AI translation becomes a more popular labour-saving tool, people will divide
into two groups. There will be those who want to challenge their minds, put
themselves in other cultures or force their thinking into new pathways. This lot will
still take on language study, often aided by technology. Others will look at learning a
new language with a mix of admiration and confusion, as they might with extreme
endurance (忍耐力) sports: “Good for you, if that’s your thing, but a bit painful for my
taste.”
But a focus on the learner alone misses the fundamentally social nature of
language. It is a bit like analysing the benefits of close relationships to heart health but
overlooking the inner value of those bonds themselves. When you try to ask directions
in broken Japanese or make a joke in halting (结结巴巴的) German, you are making
direct contact with someone. And when you speak a language well enough to tell a
story with perfect timing or put subtle (微妙的) shadings on an argument, that
connection is still deeper.
28. What is “taking a plane to the top of Mount Qomolangma” in Paragraph 2
compared to
A. Using AI tools to do the translation.
B. Doing the work that gives you satisfaction.
C. Making an effort to learn a new language.
D. Studying a language aided by technology.
29. Which of the following will the “Others” in Paragraph 4 agree with
A. People should stretch their minds in life.
第 6 页 共 12 页
B. AI translation tools offer a good service.
C. Extreme endurance sports are worth trying.
D. Language learning builds deep connections.
30. What can we learn from the last paragraph
A. Language learning benefits learners alone.
B. Language learning is of value to human health.
C. We should reflect on language learning methods.
D. We should adopt a new angle on language learning.
31. What is the author’s attitude towards AI translation tools
A. Optimistic. B. Critical. C. Reserved. D. Unconcerned.

Imagine the final stretch of a marathon: your body aches, but the cheering crowd
gives you energy to run faster. Similarly, a basketball team wins more home games in
front of their own fans. Even you might solve a problem faster when someone watches.
These common experiences all point to a basic psychological principle.
This phenomenon is known as social facilitation (促进 ), which describes how
individuals can perform tasks differently when in the company of others compared to
when they are alone. The concept was first proposed by psychologist Norman
Tripplett, who noticed that cyclists raced faster in groups. He tested his theory with a
simple experiment where children were tasked with winding fishing line. Tripplett
observed that the children who were being around others moved faster, suggesting that
a peer (同龄人) nearby can motivate.
But later studies found conflicting evidence. In another test, participants were
given a more complex task, like memorizing a list of words. Those in front of others
performed worse than those working alone. This contradiction (矛盾 ) led to a key
change of the theory. The presence of an audience tends to improve performance on
simple tasks. On the other hand, for novel tasks, the same audience can hurt
performance.
Why does this happen Psychologists suggest the key reason is our concern about
being judged by others. Since approval and disapproval often depend on others’
evaluations, we naturally become more alert in front of an audience. This alertness
helps with mastered skills, but gets in the way of learning new ones.
第 7 页 共 12 页
There isn’t one recipe for success, but social facilitation theory helps to point us in
the right direction. To improve a well-practiced skill like running or playing an
instrument, strategically seek an audience by joining a club or performing publicly. If
you struggle when watched, practice alone until you gain confidence. By taking
advantage of social settings wisely, we can use the audience effect to achieve our best
performance.
32. What is the main idea of social facilitation
A. Group interaction enhances learning efficiency.
B. Individual performance peaks in competitive settings.
C. Social situations have predictable effects on behavior.
D. The presence of others can influence our performance.
33. Which factor can explain the conflicting results in paragraph 3
A. The size of the audience. B. The difficulty of the task.
C. The type of the reward. D. The personality of the participant.
34. What is the root cause of social facilitation
A. Evaluation anxiety. B. Peer pressure.
C. Competitive desire. D. Personal standard.
35. What does the author suggest we do about the phenomenon
A. Gradually increase audience size. B. Thoughtfully manage social contexts.
C. Actively observe others' performances. D. Strategically seek supportive audiences.

Molly and Maye were good friends, like sisters, not only because they were always
in the same class, but also they shared an interest—both of them were crazy about
acting.
Before this summer holiday, their school was to hold the annual “School Play”,

wanting a whole set of actors. That was their luck. “I’d like to play a role in the show.”
Molly told herself.
After reading the notice, she learned that the play was named Rapunzel, who was a
magic princess. Another leading role was an evil witch (女巫) stealing Rapunzel to
keep herself young forever. Immediately, Molly and Maye were both attracted by the
role of princess. Apart from them, there were about twenty other girls interested in this
role as well. So an audition (试镜) would be needed to choose the most suitable one.
“Do you really want to play the princess, Maye ” they walked home, arm in arm.
“Yes, a little. And you ” Maye replied.
Long silence...
Several weeks before the audition, they practiced and practiced. With time
speeding by, Molly’s confidence grew and she felt happy with her acting.
The morning of the audition arrived at last. Unbelievable! So many students
crowded into the school hall to appreciate and witness the moment. Nervous though
Molly was, she took a deep breath and recalled what she had practiced. During the
audition, she tried her best to present her best self, and she was sure that she could
make it.
After an anxiety-filled hour, the result of the audition came out. Molly didn’t even
dare to check the result in person. Standing outside the crowd, she heard someone
shouting, “Maye is the princess!” What was worse, Molly was shocked to learn that
she was given the role of “witch”!

Treasure Our Library Books: A Shared Responsibility
Recently, I’ve noticed a disappointing phenomenon in our school library. Many books are
marked with pens . Some key sentences are underlined randomly, and a few pages have messy
notes . These damages not only ruin the beauty of the books but also make it hard for other
students to read and use them.
Library books share wealth for all of us. They bring us knowledge and joy. Let’s take
action to protect them. Never write or draw on books, turn pages gently and keep them clean.
Only by cherishing these books together can we keep the library a nice place for everyone to
learn.
It’s high time that we took action. Let’s work together to protect the books and pass
knowledge on in good condition.
【高分句型 1】These damages not only ruin the beauty of the books but also make it hard for
other students to read and use them.(运用了 it作形式宾语,不定式作真正的宾语以及 not
only...but also结构)
【高分句型 2】 Only by cherishing these books together can we keep the library a nice place
for everyone to learn.(运用了部分倒装)

Molly rushed home and burst out crying when her mother came. After her mom knew
about everything, she smiled, “Dear, why not try your best to make witch impressed Maybe
you are the best.” Molly jerked up her head as if awake from a dream. She kissed her mother
in gratitude and got ready immediately. She carefully analyzed the witch’s personality traits,
body language, consulted professionals, and looked up information about the relevant
characters. As she learned more, her confidence grew gradually.
1
A few days later, the big day for the play arrived. The performance was a great success.
Molly’s performance as the witch was as impressive as Maye’s as the princess, and the
applause from the audience continued, which made Molly cry with joy. And her friend Maye
also hugged her deeply and whispered, “If I had played a witch, I might not be as good as
you.” Molly also understands a truth: no matter what role you play, as long as it is taken
seriously, it will make people impressed.

W: Hmm, I’m afraid there isn’t a restaurant car on that train, but they sell drinks and
sandwiches.
M: That’ll be okay. Must I buy my ticket at the station ticket office Or can I get one in the
town centre
W: You can buy one at the Northern Travel Agency at 22 Mallet Street.
M: I’ll do that then. Thank you very much.
W: Not at all. Goodbye.
11-13【原文】M: Jane, I found an interesting nature walk at Purple Lakes Park. Do you want
to come and join me
W: You know I’m not much of a hiker, Henry.
M: Come on, it’ll be fun, and it’s only down the road. It’s expertly guided and we’ll explore
all areas of the forest and learn about different types of plants and animals in the area. I’m sure
you’ll enjoy it.

W: Do you know what we’ll see
M: Various bird species, butterflies and different types of flowers.
W: Oh, I like birds and flowers. Let’s give it a try.
M: Great. There’s also a new tea shop where we can stop for lunch.
W: Okay, great.
14-17.【原文】M: Alice, can you help me look after a new student who’s coming to visit our

W: That’s okay. What time will she be here
M: She’s coming at 9:30 but I’ll look after her then. Can you come and meet her at 10
W: Sure. Where shall I find her
M: She’ll be in the hall. Oh, no, she won’t. She’ll be in the office at that time after visiting the
lab.
W: Okay, so where do I take her
M: Take her to your Spanish class. After that, she’s coming to my English lesson. Then, can
you take her to lunch
