M: Hello, if you are looking for something fun to do, consider a quick weekend trip to somewhere in your

And are only a one to three hour drive away. Recently, our social group visited three small towns, Shiwana, Nani,
and Elkhart in northern Indiana.
What we enjoyed most was seeing small town with its quiet, slower paced life. It was easy to locate a
comfortable, inexpensive hotel there. We wandered the main street shopping areas and tried a variety of treats. The
busy Saturday ended with snacks, drinks and conversation. We were then rewarded with a good night’s sleep in the
peaceful countryside. After a brief Sunday breakfast, we started our way back home. Each of us felt refreshed after

On November 1, 2025, I began a new journey of rediscovery through dance, performing in front of over 200
people at a school welcome party. It was a moment of reflection on how I had let social pressure change me and the
beginning of a promise to never give up dancing again.
I was once a young girl who did many ballet turns at home and in front of people. However, as I started school,
my relationship with dance began to change. Dancing was only “cool” if you took extra classes and became skilled.
Wanting to fit in (适应) and avoid judgment (评价), I pushed my love for dance aside. I told myself that dancing
wasn’t something I could enjoy openly anymore.
On October 22, 2025, the dance team needed an extra person for a welcome party performance in one week. I
didn’t know what made me raise my hand. Part of me was afraid of dancing in front of a potentially judgmental
crowd, but something inside pushed me forward. Maybe it was that young girl within me, the one who loved to
dance without fear, encouraging me to say “yes.” I had only a week to learn the dance while my teammates had
been practicing for two months. Yet, I poured everything into learning it. Practicing was anything but easy. The
pressure of keeping up with my team weighed heavily on me. Thankfully, my teammates were patient and
supportive. Even stressed, I kept going, practicing every day for hours.
On performance day, anxiety filled my mind. Would they notice missteps or laugh at me But as I walked into
the spotlight, a wave of joy washed over me, and I saw clearly how much I had let social pressure stop me. I
realized it was never worth it to meet others’ expectations at the cost of your own joy.
24. What did the author think of dancing after she started school
A. Cheerful. B. Satisfying. C. Disappointing. D. Stressful.
25. What drove the author to volunteer for the performance
A. A strong wish to dance again. B. A sudden urge to prove herself.
C. The deep trust from her classmates. D. The need to escape from the crowds.
26. How did the author keep up with the team
A. She asked teammates for help. B. She used her past experience.
C. She kept practicing. D. She took extra dance classes.
27. What can we learn from the author’s story
A. Fortune favors the brave. B. Dream big and work hard.
C. Stay true to what you love. D. Rome wasn’t built in a day.

Cities usually have a good reason for their locations, like a nearby port or river. People live in these places
because they are easy to get to and suitable to communicate and trade. New York City, for example, is near a large
port at the mouth of the Hudson River. Over 300 years its population grew gradually from 800 people to 8 million.
But not all cities develop slowly over a long period of time. Boom towns grow from nothing almost overnight. In
1896, Dawson, Canada, was wilderness (荒野). But gold was discovered there in 1897, and two years later, it was
one of the largest cities in the West, with a population of 30,000.
Dawson did not have any of the natural conveniences of cities like London or Paris. People went there for gold.
They travelled over snow-covered mountains and sailed hundreds of miles up icy rivers. The path to Dawson was
covered with snow that could fall without warning. An avalanche (雪崩) once closed the path, killing 63 people.
For many who made it to Dawson, however, the rewards were worth the difficult trip.4,000 of the first 20,000
people who dug for gold, got rich. About 100 of these stayed rich men for the rest of their lives.
But no matter how rich they were, Dawson was never comfortable. Necessities like food and wood were very
expensive. But soon, the gold that Dawson depended on had all been found. The city was crowded with
disappointed people with no interest in settling down, and when they heard there were new gold discoveries in
Alaska, they left Dawson City as quickly as they had come. Today, people still come and go — to see where the
Canadian gold rush happened. Tourism is now the important industry of Dawson City — its present population is
762.
28. What attracted the early settlers to New York City
A. Its geographical position. B. Its small population.
C. Its business culture. D. Its favourable climate.
29. What do we know about those who first dug for gold in Dawson
A. Two-thirds of them stayed there. B. Almost everyone gave up.
C. One out of five people got rich. D. Half of them died.
30. What was the main reason for many people to leave Dawson
A. They found the city too crowded. B. They were short of food.
C. They were unable to stand the winter. D. They wanted to try their luck elsewhere.
31. What is the text mainly about
A. The gold rush in Canada. B. The rise and fall of a city.
C. Journeys into the wilderness. D. Tourism in Dawson.

Social media has become an important part of teenagers’ lives. Platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and WeChat
allow teens to connect with others, share moments from daily life, and express themselves. While social media
offers entertainment and a sense of belonging, it also creates hidden danger to teens’ mental health, a growing
concern among psychologists worldwide.
One significant issue is the pressure to create a perfect online image. A 2024 study by the Chinese Academy
of Adolescent Health (CAAH) found that over 68% of teens post edited or filtered photos, showcasing only the
glamorous aspects of their lives, such as fancy meals or exciting trips. This creates unrealistic expectations, causing
anxiety when teens real lives don’t match the idealized version they present online. The strong desire for likes can
further harm self-esteem; when posts receive little engagement, teens may feel unimportant or invisible, worsening
their anxiety.
Fear of missing out (FOMO) is also common. When teens see their friends attending events or going on trips
they weren’t invited to, it can lead to feelings of loneliness and exclusion. This can cause anxiety and harm real-life
relationships, as teens may feel disconnected from their social groups.
Finally, cyberbully (网络霸凌) is a significant concern. Social media’s anonymity (匿名) allows people to
post hurtful comments they wouldn’t say face-to-face, sometimes leading to serious results, such as depression or a
mental health crisis (危机).
To reduce these risks, experts recommend setting screen-time limits, encouraging open discussions about
social media use, and helping teens focus on building self-acceptance. Educators stress the importance of teaching
teens to identify online approval from their true self-worth.
32. What does the underlined word “glamorous” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Touching. B. Imperfect. C. Attractive. D. Unrealistic.
33. What can we infer about teens from paragraph 2
A. They use social media mainly to record real life.
B. They feel less anxious when receiving many likes.
C. They believe their polished online image reflects reality.
D. They increasingly relate their self-worth to online approval (认可).
34. How does FOMO affect teens’ real-life relationships
A. It makes teens feel left out. B. It reduces teens’ offline social desire.
C. It causes teens more social anxiety. D. It leads teens to distrust offline friends.
35. What do experts recommend to reduce the risks of social media for teens
A. Pursuing more online likes and approval.
B. Stopping teens from using social media.
C. Increasing parental monitoring of online activities.
D. Developing teens’ inner strength and critical thinking.

In a small, cozy town, there lived a kind-hearted old man named Mr. Johnson. He had a simple life, spending
his days in a small cottage surrounded by a beautiful garden. One sunny morning, while taking a walk in the local
animal shelter, his life took an unexpected turn.
Among the cages filled with various animals, Mr. Johnson’s eyes landed on a small, shivering puppy. The
puppy had big, sad eyes and a coat that was matted and dirty. Without hesitation, Mr. Johnson decided to adopt (收
养) the little dog, whom he named Max.
At first, Max was extremely timid (胆小的). He would cower (蜷缩) in the corner of the room whenever there
was a loud noise. But Mr. Johnson was patient. He spent hours sitting beside Max, gently stroking (抚摸) his fur
and talking to him in a soft voice. Slowly but surely, Max began to trust his new owner.
As the days turned into weeks, Max grew stronger and more energetic. He would follow Mr. Johnson
everywhere, whether it was to the garden to tend to the flowers or to the mailbox to pick up the daily mail. One
evening, Mr. Johnson fell ill suddenly. He collapsed (倒下) in the living room, and Max immediately sensed that
something was wrong.
