The Chaná language,a native language of Argentina, was thought to be extinct for over 200 years. However,it has now been discovered that one man has been keeping it alive.
Unknown to the world,Blas Jaime,an 89 year old Argentinian man,has kept the language from dying out. Thanks to the efforts of linguist Viegas Barros,Jaime was discovered, and the pair have now authored a book together, dedicated to restoring the language.
Blas learnt the Chaná language from his mother, whose family has passed the language down through the generations.Growing up,Blas’s mother taught him the Chaná language and stories which she urged him to keep secret in order to “protect” them.Decades later when Blas retired he sought out other Chaná people to chat and share the stories with. However,he made the shocking discovery that no one else appeared to know the language. In fact, scholars had actually considered the language extinct since 1815.
Blas said,“I exist.I am here,” kicking off a new mission to preserve and bring the Chaná language back to life, while also helping to place the indigenous (本土的) group back on the map.Over the past two decades,Blas has worked closely with UNESCO to help preserve languages.Together with Viegas Barros, the pair have created a dictionary with over 1,000 words.
Argentina has a complex history that has led to a disconnection between modern-day Argentinians and their indigenous roots. However,Blas’ work has inspired many other indigenous people in Argentina to explore their ancestry and history.“Language is what gives you identity...If someone doesn’t have their language, they’re not a people,” said Blas.
Blas’s daughter,Evangelina Jaime, has taken up the responsibility of preserving the Chaná language and culture learned from her father, ensuring that this vital piece of cultural heritage is not lost.Although the exact number of Chaná people remaining in Argentina is uncertain, the efforts of Evangelina and others like her are helping to keep the Chaná language and culture alive and flowering.

A.To remind Argentinians to seek their roots.
B.To illustrate the wisdom of indigenous people.
C.To guarantee the conservation of a cultural heritage.
D.To promote the popularity of an endangered language.
26.What can we know from the last paragraph
A.Most Argentinians will connect with their origins.
B.Evangelina is key to the spread of the Chaná language.
C.Few Chaná people participate in the preservation efforts.
D.The Chaná cultural heritage will survive and grow stronger.
27.Which of the following best describes Blas Jaime
A.Strong-willed and sympathetic.

Every year thousands of tourists flock(蜂拥) to China. They come to see the grand sights of the Great Wall and the Summer Palace, but often it is the hutongs that leave the strongest impression,as they offer travelers a rare view into Beijing’s past.Hutongs—the many little alleys that connect the rectangular(长方形的) courtyards of traditional houses—are a feature of ancient Chinese architecture.Beijing’s hutongs are particularly famous, however,as there are thousands of them.Nowadays, the word “hutong” has come to mean more than just the alleys that connect the courtyards. It also refers to the courtyards themselves and even to the communities that live there.
The majority of Beijing’s hutongs were built between the 13th and 19th centuries during the Yuan,Ming and Qing Dynasties. To help them keep control over the city, the emperors during these periods arranged different areas of Beijing in neat blocks of houses built around courtyards. They were then able to place guards at the entrances of the various hutongs, which made it easier to keep an eye on people’s movements. The emperor’s home was in the center of Beijing and the homes of the nobles and wealthy citizens were in the hutongs closest to the royal palace.Ordinary citizens lived in the hutongs further away from the palace.
By connecting people’s homes, the hutongs in fact connected people’s lives, whether the lives of the rich or the lives of the ordinary citizens.Because the houses were built facing each other around courtyards, the families who lived there were an important part of each other’s lives. They supported each other when help was needed and shared the joy and sorrow of everyday life,no doubt sharing recipes, borrowing mops, and burning fragrant incense(香) together when they pay respect to the ancestors.Because of the hutongs, courtyards were joined together for miles around creating a network of people working, playing and living together—a real community.
28.Why do the hutongs impress the foreigners most
A.Because they are unique to the ancient China.
B.Because they are particularly popular with tourists.
C.Because they provide travelers a chance to connect each other.
D.Because they enable travelers to understand Beijing’s history better.
29.What was the purpose of building hutongs
A.To defend against the enemies.
B.To offer the travelers a rare view.
C.To strengthen the emperor’s ruling over the country.
D.To deepen the connection between people in the communities.
30.How were hutongs arranged
A.They were arranged according to ranks of the classes.
B.They were arranged according to people’s life demands.
C.They were arranged according to city’s geographic features.
D.They were arranged according to the closeness among people.
31.What is the author’s intention to write the text
A.To persuade people to visit Beijing.
B.To introduce a traditional architecture.
C.To encourage people to live in hutongs.
D.To explain the feature of hutongs.

Beneath the quiet surface of a forest lies a busy network scientists call the “Wood Wide Web”.Far from being isolated(孤立的) individuals, trees communicate, share resources, and even send warnings through an underground system of fungi(真菌).
The key players in this hidden conversation are mycorrhizal fungi(菌根真菌).These thread-like organisms connect tree roots, forming vast networks.Research from the University of British Columbia reveals that up to 90% of land plants depend on these fungi.Through this interdependent relationship, trees exchange nutrients like carbon and nitrogen.Older “mother trees” often act as hubs, sending extra sugars to younger saplings struggling in shaded areas—a phenomenon called “forest family connections”.
When under attack, trees release chemical signals.A 2023 study in Nature Ecology & Evolution demonstrate that acacia trees bitten by giraffes produce ethylene(乙烯) gas.Nearby trees pick up these chemical signals from the air within minutes and increase tannin(鞣酸) production, making their leaves bitter and less tasty.Similarly, pine trees attacked by beetles send out warning signals through fungal networks, pushing neighbors to boost defensive resins(树脂).
Not all interactions are cooperative. Some plants, like the ghost orchid(兰花),hack the network to steal nutrients from nearby trees without offering anything in return.Other species, such as black walnut trees, release toxins(毒素) to restrain competitors—a strategy called “biological warfare” by ecologists.
Understanding this “social network” challenges traditional views of forests.Logging dominant mother trees can collapse entire ecosystems, much like removing servers from the Internet.Scientists now advocate for selective cutting practices that preserve fungal networks, ensuring forests’ resilience(适应力) against climate change.
As author Peter Wohlleben notes in The Hidden Life of Trees,“Forests are super-organisms with intelligence we’re just beginning to decode.” This silent dialogue beneath our feet reminds us that nature’s deepest conversations often happen without a single word.
32.What method do acacia trees use to warn nearby trees of giraffe feeding
A.Transmitting electrical signals through roots.
B.Releasing a warning gas into the air.
C.Increasing sugar distribution via fungal networks.
D.Producing defensive resins in bark.
33.What does the underlined words “biological warfare” refer to in paragraph 4
A.Using chemicals to kill insects.
B.Fighting for sunlight through height.
C.Releasing poisons to contain competitors.
D.Stealing nutrients via underground roots.
34.Why should mother trees be preserved according to scientists
A.They maintain ecosystem stability.
B.They support younger trees with nutrients.
C.They connect the forest’s fungal network.
D.They help forests resist climate change.
35.Which title best summarizes the article’s main idea
A.Amazing Tree Growth Speed Records
B.New Discoveries About Forest Animals
C.Dangerous Chemicals in Forest Plants
D.Underground Communication Among Trees

From the first day he entered my classroom,Willard P.Frank existed in his own world, shutting out his classmates and me.My attempts at building a friendly relationship with him were met with complete indifference.I could see that his classmates fared no better.Willard was strictly a loner who seemed to have no desire or need to break his silence.
Shortly after the Thanksgiving holiday,we received word of the annual Christmas collection of money for the less fortunate people in our school district.
“Christmas is a season of giving,” I told my students.“There are a few students in the school who might not have a happy holiday season.By contributing to our Christmas collection, you will help buy food, clothing and toys for these needy people. We will start the collection tomorrow.”
When I called for the contributions the next day,I discovered that almost everyone had forgotten except for Willard P.Frank.The boy dug deep into his pants pockets as he walked slowly to my desk.Carefully,he dropped two quarters into the small container.
“I don’t need milk for lunch,” he mumbled. For a moment, just a moment,he smiled. Then he turned and walked back to his desk.
That night, after school,I took our few contributions to the school principal.I couldn’t help sharing the incident that had taken place.
“I may be wrong, but I believe Willard might be getting ready to become a part of the world around him,” I told the principal.
“Yes,” he nodded.“And we might do well to have him share a bit of his world with us.I just received a list of the poor families in our school who most need help through the Christmas collection. Here, take a look at it.”
As I gazed down to read,I discovered Willard P.Frank and his family were the top names on the list.Seeing this,I decided to do something for him.
