My Amazing Experience of Time Travel
It was 10 p.m.tonight and I gave my time machine a last check. Then I pressed the time button of “Tang Dynasty” and chose the destination
—Chang'an.
A moment later,I opened my eyes and found myself lying outside the Chang'an city gate. Then I walked into the city.It was really a lively city with splendid architecture.People around me were dressed in
magnificent Tang costumes.Feeling hungry and curious,I went into a restaurant where I came across Li Bai! Then I had a good talk with him and learned a lot about Tang poetry.
One hour later,I pressed the button of “return” and in a few seconds I was lying on my bed. What an amazing experience!
Back in the early 1980s,the idea of home computers was catching on.I wasn't keen on getting one.Somehow,I evolved and have owned several computers over the years. Some days I loved my computer, but more often than not,I hated it.I didn't grow up with them, and they were a challenge to my mental health.Dealing with modern technology was my introduction to stress, and I know who to blame:my children.
They weren't satisfied that their dad and I finally bought a computer and learned to send emails. We were quite happy with that, but next came a cellphone. Then just talking on the phone was not acceptable;they insisted we learn to text as well.We couldn't get a break.
One social software in particular was popular at the time. Those kids of ours were determined to set up a joint account for us.It took some convincing. We felt no guilt for grating on(激怒) their nerves considering the drama they'd sometimes created for us during their teenage years.A little payback wouldn't hurt those two.
More recently,my husband and I were forced into getting rid of our flip phones and getting smartphones.I will admit that I progressed into appreciating mine.I liked checking my phone and finding out what I needed to know in an instant.I enjoyed having Internet access everywhere I went.I felt a sense of accomplishment;my husband—not so much.To this day,he would happily take back his flip phone.
Last year, our children surprised us with yet another popular form of technology—Alexa. The girls took our smartphones in hand and got us
programmed. Before we fully understood what was happening,we could tell Alexa to turn our lamp on or off,and she would. To be honest,we were a bit annoyed at having to learn how to use yet another device, but we decided to keep it.We mastered turning the lamp on and off,and once again I got the hang of it sooner than my husband did.I became his Alexa coach.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
One night,Alexa did not turn on the lamp when I gave the command.
We should thank our children and grandchildren.
1.读要素
Who:the author,her husband and children
When:one night
Where:at home
What:Alexa did not turn on the lamp.
Why:They don't know how to use advanced technology clearly.
I hated it ...Dealing with modern technology was my introduction to stress ...→came a cellphone→my husband and I were forced into getting rid of our flip phones and getting smartphones → children surprised us with yet another popular form of technology—Alexa
stressful → no guilt → a sense of accomplishment → a bit annoyed but decided to keep it
由续写第一段首句内容“One night,Alexa did not turn on the lamp when I gave the command.”
由续写第二段首句内容“We should thank our children and grandchildren.”
(1)What did the author do in order to ask Alexa to turn on the lamp
(2)How did the author and her husband feel
(3)What did the author do
She kept telling “Turn on the light”/...
They felt confused/anxious/...
She searched the Internet for information/...
(1)Why should the author thank her children
(2)How did the author make her life convenient
(3)How did the author think about advanced technologies
They taught her to use technology/...
She could find a solution on the Internet/accept and use technology/...
They were helpful/convenient/...
1.I tried to say “Turn on the light” to it countless times, but Alexa didn't work.
→ ,Alexa didn't work.(让步状语从句)
Although I tried to say “Turn on the light” to it countless times
2.Our children and grandchildren taught us to use technology so that I could find a solution on the Internet by myself.
→ taught us to use technology so that I could find a solution on the Internet by myself.(强调主语)
3.Our children and grandchildren “force” us to accept and use technology, and it seems to put us under pressure.
→Our children and grandchildren “force” us to accept and use technology, .(非限制性定语从句)
It was our children and grandchildren that
which seems to put us under pressure
One night,Alexa did not turn on the lamp when I gave the command.
We should thank our children and grandchildren.
One night,Alexa did not turn on the lamp when I gave the command. Although I tried to say “Turn on the light” to it countless times,Alexa didn't work.“New technologies are always unreliable,” my husband complained.I searched the Internet and immediately found the reason why Alexa couldn't work.I just needed to tell Alexa to set the light color to white or whatever color I wanted, and then it would turn on the light. Then Alexa turned on the light itself.
We should thank our children and grandchildren. It was our children and grandchildren that taught us to use technology so that I could find a solution on the Internet by myself.Without them, our life is always invariable and boring. Our children and grandchildren “force” us to accept and use technology, which seems to put us under pressure.
However, the fact is that our children and grandchildren let us really accept and use technology to make our life more convenient.

W:⑥Oh, no Internet access is killing me.
M:Can't you wait till you get home Then you can surf the Internet using the broadband, wireless connection or whatever you like.
W:No, I'm not feeling myself. I just want to check my emails, visit my favorite websites and chat with my friends. I just can't bear losing track of all the latest information. It almost drives me crazy.

W:Do you know, Jack ⑧Scientists in Antarctica have used a new invention to help them study seabirds closely—a tiny robot on wheels that looks like a baby bird.
M:Yes. I once saw it on TV. The robot is similar to those used in the exploration of the moon. Scientists, working some distance away, controlled every movement the robot made.
W:You're right.⑨It was immediately accepted by seabirds' families as one of their own. The adults even sang to it, though to their disappointment, the “baby” didn't reply.
M:That's funny! Scientists are now working on a new model with one important improvement—it will be able to play seabird songs.

M:I have no idea. But I've heard many people saying they've received such messages. I guess those guys are organized.
W:Why did they do this
M:To steal personal information and make money. They could get your account number, credit card number, or even your password if you visit a certain website with your cellphone.
W:That's so scary.
M: But don't worry. Most websites have protection measures like firewalls and so does your cellphone. So it's pretty safe to log on there.

M:Well, that is one example. Tell me, what did you do today
W:I woke up late because my phone died and I didn't hear my alarm. I shopped online for a bit, and then I came here.
M:How did you get here You've never been here before.
W:My car had it all mapped out for me.
M:So, you've used AI at least twice before you came here—online shopping and getting directions. And you'll probably use it several more times this weekend.
W:That's interesting. Why are you interested in this stuff all of a sudden
M:I just never realized how much it affects our day-to-day lives. Plus, my parents just got this.
W:What's that
M: It's a little sweeping robot. It sucks up all the dust on the floors and cleans up small water spots.Do you see how it didn't hit into the fridge That's because it has a camera that tells it where the fridge is. Isn't that crazy
W: Not really.I have the same technology in my new car. Hey, do you want to see a movie
M:Sure, but I don't know what's playing.
W:That's OK. I'll just ask my watch. Hey,what movies are playing today

W:Hey,welcome to today's talk! I'm Emma Davis, an AI enthusiast who's been exploring this since finishing at MIT.I'm excited to share my passion for the incredible world of artificial intelligence, or AI.I'll kick things off with an awesome story from 2015, in Silicon Valley. Our project was called “Project Skylark”.And with Dr. Jack Thompson, a Cornell University bird expert, we wanted to teach a machine to recognize different birds. It was amazing. “Avis”, the AI system,
learnt to improve its accuracy over time. In six months, it could identify bird species better than human experts! This showed the incredible potential of AI! It's a long way since the 1950s with Alan Turing's ideas. Modern systems can analyze data, spot patterns, and make decisions on their own. This power has opened up endless possibilities in areas like healthcare, finance, and transportation. One inspiring example comes from Dr. Alice Chen, who in 2018 led a team at Stanford University to develop the computer program “MediScan” that analyzes images
and detects early signs of diseases like cancer.MediScan's accuracy and speed massively surpassed human capabilities, saving thousands of lives. However, it has its challenges and risks. A 2020 report showed concern of AI taking jobs and affecting economy. I love AI but there's tough conversations about balancing progress, job security, privacy and security as systems get better. Together, we can create a future where AI helps us achieve our wildest dreams.
