The price of fashion—economically and environmentally—has led to the rise of ___56___ new way of dressing, and it’s beginning to take off in Australia, too. As people now choose to wear more clothes fewer ___57___(time), clothing rental services have become increasingly popular.
“I think it’s an amazing idea,” says Tanya Perilli, who owns a clothing rental shop. “Customers today look past the fact that something is secondhand and focus instead ___58___ the fact that they have something unique to wear ___59___ are not overstuffing their own wardrobes(衣柜) or contributing to landfill. ”
Tanya’s shop offers fashion clothes for women ___60___(rent) rather than purchase them outright, providing a less expensive ___61___(solve) to one-time event dressing. The concept ___62___(be) certainly not new—men have been renting good suits for decades—but for female shoppers, it is just taking off. This clothing-as-service model follows the broader societal movement towards shared economies.
Tanya is also looking beyond special-occasion dresses to less formal clothing, ___63___ she plans to package as capsule wardrobes and offer to travellers, such as those headed to weddings abroad, with a longer-term rental period. “I really want to make this work for ___64___(people) lives today, and I know that doesn’t always mean ___65___(return) a dress on the Monday after a special weekend,” she says.

1. Customers today look past the fact that something is secondhand and focus instead on the fact that they have something unique to wear and are not overstuffing their own wardrobes or contributing to landfill.
“look past the fact. . . ”和“focus on the fact. . . ”。 在第二个同位语从句中,“they have something unique to wear”和“are not overstuffing their own wardrobes or contributing to landfill”是由and连接的并列结构,共同作从句的谓语部分。
2. Tanya is also looking beyond special - occasion dresses to less formal clothing, which she plans to package as capsule wardrobes and offer to travellers, such as those headed to weddings abroad, with a longer - term rental period.
分析:本句是主从复合句,主句是“Tanya is also looking beyond special - occasion dresses to less formal clothing”。“which she plans to package as capsule wardrobes and offer to travellers. . . ”是一个________从句,修饰先行词“less formal clothing”。在定语从句中,“package as capsule wardrobes”和“offer to travellers”是并列的谓语结构,“such as those headed to weddings abroad”是对“travellers”的举例说明,“with a longer - term rental period”是________,修饰“travellers”。

People often think weight loss is just about eating less and moving more, but long-term success actually depends on more than that. Key factors include timing, consistency, and the right support. For example, starting a program early in the year uses the natural motivation of a fresh start to build better habits.
Why does January work so well It connects timing, our bodies, and our mindset. The new year helps people leave past struggles behind and focus on a new beginning. Even though many doubt New Year’s resolutions, recent large studies show clear benefits. A UK study of over 85,000 people found that those who began a weight management program in January lost 12-30% more weight than those who started later. This “New Year effect” boosts program attendance and personal consistency, which are essential for real results.
For effective weight loss, public guidelines suggest eating about 500-750 fewer kilo calories per day. However, tracking calories exactly can be difficult. More importantly, what you eat matters greatly. Eating enough protein helps protect muscle, which is vital because muscle keeps your metabolism(新陈代谢) active. Recent research confirms that higher protein intake helps maintain muscle and supports long-term weight control, especially when combined with strength training.
Putting these insights into practice means understanding the distinct roles of diet and exercise. While changing your diet is key for initial weight loss, physical activity is irreplaceable for long-term weight maintenance and overall health. One supports the other: good nutrition fuels effective exercise, and exercise, in turn, helps preserve the metabolism-boosting muscle that good nutrition builds.
Therefore, modern nutrition science suggests moving beyond simple rules. The most sustainable approach is a balanced one: follow overall healthy eating patterns — like focusing on whole foods, vegetables, and lean proteins — to steadily support your metabolism, rather than just cutting out single nutrients like fats or carbs. This principle, along with consistent physical activity, forms the true foundation for lasting weight management and better health.
1. How does the author prove the “New Year effect”
A. With historical traditions. B. By comparing different months.
C. By quoting several psychologists. D. With a question and research data.
2. What does paragraph 3 suggest about managing calorie intake
A. It is the most reliable way to ensure weight loss.
B. It is no longer recommended by health guidelines.
C. It is less critical than choosing high-quality foods.
D. It becomes effortless when combined with strength training.
3. What is the relationship between diet and exercise in the text
A. Diet drives early results; activity sustains them.
B. They are equally important; their importance is constant.
C. Diet is important; activity is more important from the start.
D. Activity is key for early weight loss; diet is key for later maintenance.
4. What is the main purpose of writing the text
A. To advertise a new weight loss product.
B. To criticize simple weight loss methods.
C. To explain weight management strategies.
D. To share a detailed diet and workout plan.
D 2. C 3. A 4. C
根据第二段“Why does January work so well It connects timing, our bodies, and our mindset. Even though many doubt New Year’s resolutions, recent large studies show clear benefits. A UK study of over 85,000 people found that those who began a weight management program in January lost 12-30% more weight than those who started later. (为什么一月效果这么好?它结合了时间、我们的身体和心态。尽管许多人怀疑新年决心,但最近的大型研究显示出明显的好处。英国一项针对85000多人的研究发现,在一月份开始体重管理计划的人比晚些时候开始的人多减掉12-30%的体重。)”可知,作者通过提出问题并引用研究数据来证明“新年效应”。故选D。
2. 细节理解题。根据第三段“However, tracking calories exactly can be difficult. More importantly, what you eat matters greatly. (然而,精确追踪卡路里是困难的。更重要的是,你吃什么非常重要。)”可知,管理卡路里摄入不如选择高质量的食物关键。故选C。
3. 细节理解题。根据第四段“While changing your diet is key for initial weight loss, physical activity is irreplaceable for long-term weight maintenance and overall health. (虽然改变饮食是初期减重的关键,但体育锻炼对于长期体重维持和整体健康是不可替代的。)”可知,饮食带来初期效果,运动维持效果。故选A。
通读全文可知,尤其根据最后一段“The most sustainable approach is a balanced one: follow overall healthy eating patterns — like focusing on whole foods, vegetables, and lean proteins — to steadily support your metabolism, rather than just cutting out single nutrients like fats or carbs. This principle, along with consistent physical activity, forms the true foundation for lasting weight management and better health. (最可持续的方法是一种均衡的策略:遵循全面的健康饮食模式——比如注重天然未加工食品、蔬菜和瘦肉蛋白——以持续支持新陈代谢,而不是仅仅剔除像脂肪或碳水化合物这样的单一营养成分。这一原则与持续的体育锻炼相结合,构成了实现长期体重管理以及更健康生活的真正基础。)”可知,文章主要解释了科学、可持续的体重管理方法与策略。故选C。

Many of us have got into the habit of listening to podcasts, audiobooks and other online content at increased playback speeds — a norm even for younger people. One survey of students in California found 89% adjusted online lecture speeds, with widespread media coverage of this common practice.
Faster playback offers clear advantages. It enables you to consume more content in the same amount of time or replaying the same content for better absorption. This could be particularly useful in an educational context, where it might free up time for knowledge application practice. Watching quickly is also potentially a good way to help sustain your attention and engagement for the entire duration to avoid the mind wandering.
There are, however, disadvantages. While people can process speech at 150-450 words per minute, the real concern lies in the quality and longevity of the memories formed. New information is first held in working memory, which has a limited capacity. If information arrives too quickly, this system can be overwhelmed, causing mental overload and information loss.
A recent comprehensive analysis of 24 studies on learning from video lectures, led by Theepan Tharumalingam from University of Waterloo, lends strong support to this claim. In these studies, participants were randomly assigned to watch lectures at normal speed or at increased speeds (1. 25x to 2. 5x), then tested on the content. The analysis revealed that increasing playback speed had increasingly negative effects on test performance. At speeds of up to 1. 5x, the cost was very small. But at 2x and above, the negative effect was moderate to large.
However, we don’t yet know whether regular fast playback reduces its negative effects — such as coping with higher cognitive load and reducing memory loss. Neither is there any scientific evidence for potential long-term effects of fast playback on mental function and brain activity, which could be positive or negative in theory.
Even if 1. 5x playback does not harm memory, there is evidence to suggest the experience is less enjoyable, possibly affecting people’s learning motivation and leading to avoidance. On the other hand, faster playback has become popular, so maybe once people get used to it, it’s fine — hopefully we’ll understand these processes better in the years to come.
5. How do students benefit from faster playback
A. By fitting in with their classmates. B. By ensuring better memory of lectures.
C. By saving more time for hands-on practice. D. By focusing on the more engaging content.
6. What potential risk may faster playback cause
A. Permanent damage to brain function. B. Limited capacity of working memory.
C. Failure to pass learning assessment tests. D. Reduced quality of information absorbed.
7. How did the author prove the disadvantages of faster playback
A. By providing video lectures. B. By citing a research review.
C. By conducting an experiment. D. By interviewing the students.
8. What is the author’s attitude towards faster playback
A. Approving. B. Pessimistic. C. Intolerant. D. Cautious.
C 6. D 7. B 8. D
It enables you to consume more content in the same amount of time or replaying the same content for better absorption. This could be particularly useful in an educational context, where it might free up time for knowledge application practice. (快进播放具有明显的优势。它能让你在相同时间内获取更多内容,或者重播相同内容以便更好地理解吸收。这在教育环境中可能会特别有用,因为它能够为知识应用实践腾出更多时间)”可知,倍速播放在教育情境下的一个好处是能腾出时间进行知识应用实践。故选C。
6. 细节理解题。根据第三段“While people can process speech at 150-450 words per minute, the real concern lies in the quality and longevity of the memories formed. New information is first held in working memory, which has a limited capacity. If information arrives too quickly, this system can be overwhelmed, causing mental overload and information loss. (虽然人们能够以每分钟150至450个单词的速度理解语言,但真正令人担忧的在于所形成记忆的质量和持久性。新信息首先会储存在工作记忆中,而工作记忆的容量是有限的。如果信息来得太快,这个系统就会不堪重负,导致精神负担过重和信息丢失)”可知,倍速播放的潜在风险在于可能降低信息吸收的质量。故选D。
7. 推理判断题。根据第四段“A recent comprehensive analysis of 24 studies on learning from video lectures, led by Theepan Tharumalingam from University of Waterloo, lends strong support to this claim. In these studies, participants were randomly assigned to watch lectures at normal speed or at increased speeds (1. 25x to 2. 5x), then tested on the content. But at 2x and above, the negative effect was moderate to large.
根据最后一段“Even if 1. 5x playback does not harm memory, there is evidence to suggest the experience is less enjoyable, possibly affecting people’s learning motivation and leading to avoidance. On the other hand, faster playback has become popular, so maybe once people get used to it, it’s fine — hopefully we’ll understand these processes better in the years to come. (即使 1. 5 倍速播放不会损害记忆力,也有证据表明,这种体验没那么愉快,这可能会影响人们的学习动力,甚至导致逃避学习。另一方面,加快播放速度的做法也变得流行起来,所以也许一旦人们习惯了这种方式,那就没什么问题了——希望在未来几年我们能更深入地理解这些过程)”可知,作者持谨慎观望的态度。故选D。
二. 阅读理解七选五
As we are highly social creatures, social approval is embedded(嵌入) in our DNA. 1 The diverse experiences and perspectives can sometimes create conflicts. Although being disliked can feel upsetting, you can find value in it. Accepting that you won’t be everyone’s cup of tea can be empowering — especially when you learn to like yourself unconditionally.
It’s important to acknowledge and validate your own feelings. Recognize this: The fear of being disliked is a common response to the threat of social rejection. 2 Knowing this can help reduce the sense of shame that often accompanies it.
It can also be beneficial to reframe “all-or-nothing” thinking in a more realistic way. Ask yourself what is the worst thing that could happen if someone dislikes you — more likely than not, you’ll realize the fear is disproportionate(不成比例的) to reality. Remind yourself that others’ opinions are shaped by their own experiences, biases, and insecurities. 3
What also helps is coupling consistent acts of self-care and finding people in your life who make you feel understood, recognized, celebrated, and loved. Instead of reflecting on who might not like you and why, focus on building healthy, supportive relationships with others.
At some point, you’ve probably taken a dislike to someone. 4 Or the reasons are often superficial(表面的). If someone else dislikes you, it might be for similarly minor reasons. And most likely, it is not a reflection on you.
5 “When you develop self-acceptance, others’ opinions lose their power to control your emotional state,” explains Tina. “With practice, you can embrace the freedom of being your true self.”
A. They’re not always about you.
B. It’s also completely understandable.
C. That feeling of dislike often stays with you.
D. And you might not even be able to explain why.
E. Ultimately, learning to please others is the key to happiness.
F. However, we often have to spend time with different people.
G. Overcoming the fear of being disliked starts with liking yourself.
F 2. B 3. A 4. D 5. G
1. 上文“As we are highly social creatures, social approval is embedded (嵌入) in our DNA. (因为我们是高度社会化的生物,社会认可早已融入我们的基因之中)”说明人类作为社会性动物渴望被认可,下文“The diverse experiences and perspectives can sometimes create conflicts. (不同的经历和观点有时会引发冲突)”提到不同经历和观点会产生冲突。F项“However, we often have to spend time with different people. 2. 上文“Recognize this: The fear of being disliked is a common response to the threat of social rejection. (要明白这一点:害怕被讨厌是面对社交排斥威胁时的一种常见反应)”指出害怕被讨厌是一种常见反应,下文“Knowing this can help reduce the sense of shame that often accompaniesit. (了解这一点有助于减轻通常伴随这种恐惧而来的羞愧感)”提到了解这一点可以减少羞耻感。B 项“It’s also completely understandable. (这也是完全可以理解的)”中的“It”指代上文的“The fear of being disliked”,而“understandable”与下文的“Knowing”形成同义复现,进一步说明这种害怕是完全可以理解的,从而自然引出下文。故选B项。
3. 上文“Remind yourself that others’ opinions are shaped by their own experiences, biases, and insecurities. (提醒自己,他人的看法是由他们的自身经历、偏见和不安所塑造的)”强调他人的评价源于自身,而非被评价人的问题。A项“They’ re not always about you. (它们并不总是与你有关)”对此做出高度凝练的总结,点明“它们不总是关于你”,与上文观点一致。故选A项。
4. 上文“At some point, you’ ve probably taken a dislike to someone. (在某个时候,你或许会对某人产生反感)”指出你可能讨厌过某人,下文“Or the reasons are often superficial (表面的). (或者原因往往很肤浅)”说明原因往往很表面。D项“And you might not even be able to explain why. ( 而且你可能甚至都无法解释原因)”与下文形成选择关系——要么说不出原因,要么原因很表面,逻辑合理。同时,“explain why”与下文的“reasons”形成词汇复现。故选D项。
5. 下文““When you develop self-acceptance, others’ opinions lose their power to control your emotional state,” explains Tina. “With practice, you can embrace the freedom of being your true self. ”(“当你学会自我接纳时,他人的看法就无法再控制你的情绪状态了,”蒂娜解释道。“通过练习,你可以拥抱做真实自我的自由。”)”强调培养自我接纳、喜欢自己的重要性。G项“Overcoming the fear of being disliked starts with liking yourself. (克服害怕被讨厌的心理首先要学会喜欢自己)”中的“starts with liking yourself”与下文的“develop self-acceptance”和“being your true self”形成语义呼应,概括本段主旨。故选G项。

transform…into… 故填into。

Dear Alex,
Glad to hear you’re visiting the National Museum of China! My top recommendation is the Han Dynasty Bronze Wild Goose-and-Fish Lamp.
This lamp is designed as a wild goose with a fish in its mouth. What’s special is how it works. When the lamp is lit, smoke rises through its neck and into its body, which is filled with water. There, the smoke is purified by the water, greatly reducing indoor air pollution.
I find its design clever and eco-friendly. It truly reflects the wisdom of the ancient Chinese people. I’m sure you’ll like it!
Best regards,
Li Hua

Dear Alex,
Glad to hear you’re visiting the National Museum of China! I’d like to recommend a remarkable exhibit to you, which is the Bronze Wild Goose-and-Fish Lamp from the Han Dynasty.
This lamp is shaped like a graceful wild goose looking back with a fish in its mouth. What makes it incredible is its function. When the oil burns, smoke travels through the goose’s neck into its water-filled body. Then the water captures some of the lamp’s pollutants, effectively purifying the air.
This lamp is not just a light source, but a window into how the ancient Chinese combined art, science, and environmental awareness to create practical masterpieces. You’ll find it truly impressive. Enjoy your visit!
Best regards,
Li Hua
Dear Alex,
Glad to hear that you’re visiting the National Museum of China! For an exhibit that I find truly fascinating, I’d recommend the Bronze Wild Goose-and-Fish Lamp from the Han Dynasty.
This lamp takes the form of a wild goose, with its long neck curved gracefully backward and a fish held in its mouth. Beyond its stunning appearance, the lamp’s true brilliance lies in its clever design. When it is lit, the smoke produced is channeled through the goose’s neck into its body. The water stored inside absorbs some emissions, preventing them from being released into the air. What a remarkable eco-friendly design from 2, 000 years ago!
This lamp perfectly combines artistic beauty with practical function, reflecting the incredible wisdom of the ancient Chinese. I believe you’ll be deeply impressed by it!
Best regards,
Li Hua

C. Intolerant. D. Cautious.
