My daughter, Sarah, has always had a competitive fire in her eyes that made people forget how small she was. From the moment she could walk, she was chasing a ball, determined to keep up with kids who often towered over her. As her mother, my deep wish was to guard her. I was always on the sidelines, my heart in my throat, a constant, anxious presence ready to step in immediately at the slightest sign of trouble. I believed my protection was what kept her safe against the rough-and-tumble world of sports.
The championship game that Saturday was against the Hawks, a team known for their aggressive, physical play. The gym was loud and stuffy, filled with the echoing sounds of sneakers and the loud and excited shouts from the bleachers (看台). From my usual spot in the second row, I watched Sarah, a tiny figure in her oversized team shirt, move quickly across the court. She was playing point guard (控球后卫), her face showing a very focused concentration as she moved the ball down the court, constantly looking for an opening. The tension could be felt everywhere.
With only a few minutes left on the clock and the score tied, Sarah saw her chance. She drove toward the basket, weaving through defenders. Just as she went up for a layup, a Hawk player suddenly rushed forward to block her. The move was awkward and too forceful. The ball, slapped away from the other player’s hand, flew straight up and then came down with a sickening, sharp crack right against Sarah’s face. The sound seemed to echo above all the noise. My body moved before my mind could catch up. A sudden, strong wave of panic from a mother's heart shot through me. In an instant, I was on my feet, my purse dropping to the floor, ready to jump over the bleacher rail to get to my girl.

【答案】
But then Sarah shouted, “No, Mom!” Her voice was sharp and firm, cutting through my panic. I froze mid-step, watching as she rubbed her cheek lightly, eyes still locked on the court. “I’m fine!” she yelled, waving me off. The referee blew the whistle, and Sarah quickly rejoined the game, focus unshaken. I sank back, hands trembling — her refusal hit hard. For years, I’d thought protection meant sheltering her, but in that moment, I realized she needed space to prove her strength. As the game resumed, I watched her dart around defenders, movements bolder than before, my anxiety softening into pride.
When the final whistle died, Sarah walked towards me. Her cheek was slightly swollen, but a bright smile lit her face. “We won!” she exclaimed, throwing her arms around me. I held her tight, brushing hair from her forehead. “You were amazing,” I said, voice thick with emotion. She pulled back, eyes shining. “I knew I could do it, Mom. Sometimes you have to get back up on your own.” Those words lingered. That day, Sarah didn’t just win a championship — she taught me courage isn’t about never falling, but rising even when hurt. My little girl was growing up, and it was time to step back, trust her, and cheer her on from the sidelines.

Last autumn, a small conflict between my family and our new neighbors almost broke out, but it eventually turned into a precious lesson about understanding and friendship.
Mr and Mrs Lee moved into the apartment next door in early September. At first, we exchanged polite smiles when passing by, but things changed soon. My younger brother, Tom, was crazy about playing the drums (鼓). He’d been dreaming of joining the school’s music band and practiced hard every evening right after finishing his homework, usually from 5 pm to 6 pm. He said the loud beats helped him release stress from a day of studying. However, our thin apartment walls turned his practice sessions into a headache for the Lees.
Mrs Lee worked night shifts at the hospital. She relied on the afternoons to sleep and recharge for the next shift, but the drumbeats would wake her up repeatedly. Mr Lee, a freelance writer who worked from home, needed complete quiet to focus on his stories, but the constant “boom-boom-boom” would break his train of thought. We didn’t notice their trouble at first; Tom always closed his bedroom door when practicing, and we thought that would reduce the noise enough.
One Tuesday evening, Mr Lee knocked on our door. His face looked serious, and I could tell he was upset. “I’m sorry to bother you,” he said, “but the drum noise has been making it hard for my wife to rest and me to work. We’ve tried closing the windows, but it still doesn’t help much.” My parents apologized immediately, but Tom felt wronged. He argued that he only practiced for an hour each day and had nowhere else to play. For the next few days, the atmosphere between our two families became awkward. We stopped greeting each other, and the walls seemed to grow thicker.
My mom decided to fix the situation. She baked a plate of chocolate cookies — Mrs Lee’s favorite, which we learned from a casual chat before — and asked Tom and me to take them to the Lees.

【答案】
When we arrived, Mrs Lee opened the door with a surprised look. She hesitated for a moment before inviting us in. My mom smiled warmly and handed her the cookies, explaining that we wanted to apologize for the trouble Tom had caused. Mrs Lee’s face softened, and she thanked us sincerely. We sat down and had a heart-to-heart talk. She shared how difficult it was for her to sleep during the day and for Mr Lee to concentrate on his writing. Tom listened quietly, realizing the impact of his drumming on them.
After a discussion, they agreed on a new schedule for drum practice. Tom would now practice from 7 pm to 8 pm, when Mrs Lee was at work and Mr Lee could take a break. He also promised to use drum mufflers to reduce the noise. In return, the Lees invited us to a home-cooked dinner the following weekend. As we left their apartment, the tension that had hung over us for days finally lifted. This small conflict had taught us the importance of understanding and compromise, turning neighbors into friends.

Julie let out a laugh as she playfully tapped Robert with her lightweight jacket — she’d only meant to joke with him gently, never to hurt him. But Robert reacted sharply: he stepped back in pain, holding his left shoulder and tears welling up in his eyes. Their teacher Mr. Mobley noticed the noise and walked over. Soon, Robert was sent to the nurse’s office, while Julie returned to the classroom, confused and uneasy.
Julie tried to focus on the spelling lesson, but her mind wandered. A sudden knock interrupted the class; a student volunteer handed Mr. Mobley a note from the office. All eyes fixed on the teacher, as office notes usually meant trouble. Sure enough, Mr. Mobley told Julie to take her belongings and go to Principal Sinclair’s office immediately. Embarrassed and panicked, she grabbed her jacket and headed out, wondering how it could cause harm.
Sliding her hands into the jacket pockets, she felt a hard, round object — her new yo-yo. Her legs went weak, realizing it was the yo-yo, not the jacket, that had hurt Robert. Reaching the office, she was called in at once. The principal informed her that Robert had a shoulder bump (肿块). His mother was upset and took him to the doctor.
Julie waited anxiously for her mother, fearing punishment as she’d always been a straight-A student. When her mother arrived, Julie described the whole story, admitting she’d joked about Robert. Unexpectedly, her mother didn’t blame her. Instead, she hugged Julie tightly and shared that she’d once bitten a boy at school on purpose, calling themselves “troublemakers” with a smile. Julie laughed through her tears, feeling relieved.
The next day, Robert was back at school, with a slight bump on his shoulder. Julie apologized immediately. But Julie still felt guilty — she wanted to ensure he wasn’t really angry.

【答案】One possible version:
Weeks later, a class picnic was announced, and thinking of Robert, Julie hesitated to invite him. The memory of hurting him still stayed, making her worried that he might hate her. She spent a whole night making a hand-drawn card with a yo-yo pattern and preparing his favorite strawberry cookies, wanting to express her apology again. On the picnic day, she gathered up all her courage to walk toward Robert. Seeing her approaching, Robert turned around with a gentle smile, which eased her nervousness instantly. She handed Robert the card and cookies, hoping that Robert could accept her apology.
As the picnic ended, Julie walked beside Robert on the way home. The setting sun cast warm light on them, and Robert talked about his experience at the doctor’s, saying the injury healed quickly with his mother’s care. He mentioned that he knew Julie hadn’t meant to hurt him. Julie felt a weight lifted off her chest, realizing true friendship wasn’t easily broken by mistakes. This small incident taught her that the courage to make up and apologize could strengthen relationships, and imperfection was part of growing up.

Last month, my best friend Lily and I made an appointment to volunteer at the local animal shelter every weekend. We both adored animals and had dreamed of opening our own rescue center someday. Our routine was simple: I’d clean kennels (狗舍) while Lily socialized the cats. But as midterm exams approached, my anxiety snowballed began skipping shifts, inventing excuses like “family emergencies” or “study sessions”. Lily never questioned me, but her disappointed sighs cut deeper than any accusation.
One rainy Saturday, the shelter’s director called me directly. Lily’s down with a cold, she said, “and we’ve got some abandoned dogs arriving in an hour. Can you come ” My hands got sweaty, I’d lied about studying that very morning, claiming I needed to go over chemistry. Now, faced with a choice between my lie and the dogs, I froze. “I...I have a fever,” I tripped over my words. “I can’t make it.” The director’s silence felt like a hit.
That night, guilt bothered me as I went through Lily’s Instagram ( 照片墙). There she was wrapped in a blanket, surrounded by eight tiny golden retrievers (寻回犬). The illustration read: Even when I’m sick, these angels keep me going. Below it were comments praising her devotion. My chest tightened. Scrolling further, I saw Lily’s post from last night: “Stuffy nose, but Mom’s chicken soup saved the day!”
The next day, I dragged myself to the shelter. Through the window, I saw Lily kneeling in front of a kennel, cleaning patiently. Her coughs rang out through the courtyard. I pushed open the door, my throat tightening, “Lily...” She tuned, her face pale but eyes bright. You said you were sick, she whispered. But here you are, perfectly fine. I opened my mouth to explain, but the words died as a tremble attacked her body.

【答案】 I realized it was time to admit my lie and make up for my mistakes. Tears welled up in my eyes as I blurted out the truth: “I wasn’t sick. I lied because I was too anxious about midterms to volunteer.” I hung my head, waiting for her anger. But she just sighed softly and said, “I knew something was off, but I didn’t want to push you.” She pointed to the clean kennels and playful puppies, “We’re a team, remember We can help each other through tough times.” Her words made my guilt heavier, but also filled me with warmth.
With trembling hands, I took out the homemade chicken soup I’d cooked early in the morning. “I made this for you. It’s not as good as your mom’s, but I hope it helps,” I said shyly. Lily’s eyes lit up. After she took a sip, she smiled and handed me a puppy. “Let’s clean the last kennel together.” We worked side by side, chatting softly. From that day on, I never skipped a shift. When midterms came, Lily even helped me review. True friendship, I learned, is about honesty and standing by each other — even when things get tough.

Li Ming was a 17-year-old exchange student from China. With a heart full of dreams and a little bit of nervousness, he flew to the United Kingdom to start a new adventure. He had always imagined what it would be like to walk through the historic streets of England and meet people from different parts of the world. But as soon as he arrived at his new school, he felt a little unsure.
In his new class, Li Ming struggled to start conversations with his British classmates. They spoke so quickly and used words and phrases he didn't understand. When he tried to join their conversations, he felt shy about his accent and worried that he might say something wrong. He also noticed that British students seemed to value their personal space more than he was used to, which made it even harder for him to find the right moment to start a meaningful talk.
Group work was even harder. During a group project in literature class, Li Ming had trouble explaining his ideas clearly, feeling like his ideas were getting lost in translation. And he started to
doubt himself.
Social events outside of class were just as difficult. At a school party, Li Ming watched his classmates laugh, dance, and sing along to the latest pop songs. He felt left out, not knowing the songs or the dance moves. He wanted to join the fun, but the fear of looking silly kept him on the sidelines.
One day, the school announced a talent show, Li Ming, who practiced traditional Chinese kung fu, really wanted to try. While he was hesitating, a group of British students interested in cultural performances invited him to join them. Li Ming agreed.

【答案】
During their practice, the group was amazed by Li Ming’s Chinese kung fu. His fluid movements combining strength and grace drew gasps of admiration. When he demonstrated a dragon-style sequence, the British students clapped enthusiastically. Sensing their genuine interest, Li Ming offered to teach basic stances. In return, they taught him popular dance steps, blending Eastern and Western elements into their performance. Gradually, Li Ming found himself laughing naturally during rehearsals. The cultural exchange dissolved his anxiety, replacing it with collaborative joy. By performance day, their routine had transformed into a vibrant fusion of martial arts and modern dance.
After the show, Li Ming noticed some changes happening. Classmates greeted him warmly in corridors, asking about kung fu philosophies. In literature class, group members actively sought his interpretations, patiently listening to his accented English. At lunch breaks, students invited him to join conversations about cultural differences. The once-daunting school parties became opportunities to share Chinese pop songs. Most importantly, Li Ming stopped overthinking every interaction. He realized communication wasn’t about perfection, but sincere effort. Slowly, his initial adventure transformed into meaningful connections built on mutual curiosity and respect.

The ceramic elephant felt cool and smooth in Li Wei’s palm. Its complex patterns, painted in vibrant blues and yellows, were unlike any artwork from his Jiangxi hometown. It was a gift from his new classmate, Ravi, whose family had just moved from India. “In my culture, the elephant symbolizes good luck and friendship,” Ravi explained with a shy smile. Li Wei was deeply touched but also felt nervous about the upcoming school International Culture Fair. He and Ravi were paired to create a presentation comparing China’s Spring Festival with India’s Diwali.
Their first meeting at Li Wei’s house started with awkward silence. Ravi pointed to a paper cutting of the Chinese character ‘福’ (Fu) on the window. “Does it mean… happiness ” he asked hesitantly. Li Wei nodded, surprised by Ravi’s interest, and showed him how to make a simple paper cut. In return, Ravi played a video of Diwali celebrations — cities lit by countless clay lamps. “It’s like your Lantern Festival, but different,” Ravi said, his eyes shining. Li Wei realized Diwali’s theme of light overcoming darkness agreed with the Spring Festival’s theme of welcoming a hopeful new year.
They spent the afternoon exchanging stories. Li Wei talked about the reunion dinner and red envelopes. Ravi explained the legends behind Diwali and sharing sweets with neighbors. They discovered surprising parallels: both festivals were about family, hope, and the triumph of good. The initial awkwardness melted away, replaced by excitement. They decided to combine their skills: Li Wei would create a large paper-cut backdrop blending a Chinese dragon and Indian peacocks under lanterns and clay lamps. Ravi would work on a short film weaving their personal stories with festival visuals. As they brainstormed, the setting sun cast a warm glow over the scattered craft materials. They had found a common language through a shared appreciation for the stories that shaped them.

【答案】Paragraph 1:
The day before the fair, they stayed late in the classroom to put the final touches on their project. Li Wei added glittering gold edges to the paper-cut backdrop, on which a dragon and peacocks were vividly described. Ravi polished the short film, carefully blending a Chinese flute melody with the gentle strum of an Indian guitar. As they worked, the quiet rhythm of their collaboration enveloped the room. With a profound sense of accomplishment welling up over them both, they wrapped it up, the project shining with the charm of both cultures. Tired but excited, they headed home, eager for the next day.
Paragraph 2:
When they stepped onto the stage, the hall fell silent. Nervousness filled their minds, Li Wei held up the stunning backdrop, and Ravi hit the play button. The screen lit up with warm festival scenes that showed the joy of both festivals. They took turns explaining the shared values of family and hope behind them. Li Wei spoke about the symbolism of reunion in the Spring Festival, his voice steady and clear. Ravi followed, describing how Diwali’s lights signified the victory of hope over darkness. When they finished, thunderous applause erupted. A teacher praised their work, and Li Wei and Ravi exchanged a smile, feeling their bond grow stronger than ever.

Li Yue, a Chinese high school exchange student in London, felt a little nervous when Mr. White said to the class, “This Thursday, I want each of you to bring something that matters to you and share it with the class.” Li Yue sat quietly, thinking hard about what to bring. Suddenly, she remembered that the Lantern Festival would be the following Tuesday. A bright idea struck her, making her eyes light up instantly.
Thursday came quickly, and the classroom was filled with joy and laughter. Most students brought snacks and small toys to share. When it was Li Yue’s turn, she stood up, holding a beautifully decorated wooden box. She opened it gently and took out a flat, folded piece of red paper. With a few quick, skillful folds and pulls, the paper magically turned into a delicate lantern frame. She placed a candle inside and lit it carefully. The gentle flame came alive, bathing the red lantern in warm light that spread throughout the classroom.
“It’s incredible! What is it ” Emma, Li Yue’s deskmate, asked eagerly. Li Yue smiled and held up the lantern, introducing the Lantern Festival, its traditions of hanging lanterns, guessing riddles and eating a kind of sweet glutinous rice (糯米) balls called yuanxiao, and how red lanterns symbolize hope and reunion in Chinese culture. “And this year, the Lantern Festival is exactly next Tuesday,” she said.
Seeing how interested the whole class was, Mr. White walked over with a smile. “This is a wonderful way to connect different cultures,” he said to Li Yue. “Would you like to host a Lantern Festival party for the whole grade next Tuesday night I’m sure it will be fantastic.”
Li Yue nodded firmly, her face bright with excitement. “I’d love to!” she replied. The class broke into applause, but as she sat down, a little worry set in — how could she make the party fun and unforgettable

Li Yue realized that the key solution was getting everyone involved. Without hesitation, she turned to Emma for help, whose eyes lit up at once. They announced to the whole class that volunteers were needed. To their delight, all the students raised their hands eagerly, their faces shining with enthusiasm. Greatly relieved, Li Yue wasted no time dividing them into two groups: one led by her to craft lanterns with riddles attached, and the other led by Emma to prepare the ingredients and tools for making yuanxiao. With clear roles assigned, everyone immediately set to work. On Tuesday afternoon, everything was ready.
The party took place as scheduled in the school cafeteria. Red lanterns decorated the space, creating a festive atmosphere. Guided by Li Yue, the whole grade made yuanxiao together. Soon, bowls of steaming yuanxiao were served, and everyone savored their handmade delicacies. The highlight was the riddle-guessing activity, which filled the cafeteria with bursts of laughter and cheers. To deepen everyone’s understanding, Li Yue introduced each tradition in detail and even taught the students to say some Chinese blessings. Bathed in the warm lantern light, the students shared not just food and fun, but a profound sense of connection, making it an unforgettable night for everyone.

For our long-service leave, my husband and I decided to travel around Tasmania with our camper trailer (野营拖车). We were coming all the way across Western Australia to get there — not exactly a “lap of the map”, but still a big trip. We’d packed our bikes, surfboards and our dog.
It was all going beautifully until we got to St Helens in Tasmania. We were looking forward to hitting the bike trails and the beach. But what was meant to be a fun day of mountain biking quickly turned into a stressful, late-night rescue when my husband broke his leg on the trail.
Thanks to the incredible local emergency services, he was located, rescued and airlifted to hospital. As I watched him being flown off the mountain by helicopter, relief flooded through me — and then reality hit. I was now solely responsible for the dog, the vehicle and the camper trailer still set up back at the campsite. Packing up the trailer was a two-person job. My family and friends were 4,000 km away in Western Australia. And my dog needed a walk!
The next day, new neighbours arrived at the campsite. Exhausted and worried, I managed a small smile as a man named Sam said hello and began setting up with his wife. I wondered what they thought — a solo woman with a dog, no partner in sight, and a camper trailer full of gear (齿轮).
Eventually, Sam’s curiosity got the better of him. He asked a few gentle questions and, after two days of silent stress, the whole story poured out.
Sam listened patiently, kindly. He nodded, said little, and returned to his own camp. That evening, he and his wife, Hillary, did something extraordinary. With no hesitation, they told me they’d pack everything up for me. “Tasmania has given us a warm hug, “they said. “Now we want to pass that hug on.”

【答案】例文
The next morning, true to their word, they arrived ready to help. And what followed was no small task. My husband, still in a hospital bed, talked us through the process over the phone. It was complex and physically demanding. Piece by piece, with calm and methodical care, Sam worked it all out, while Hillary offered encouragement, guidance and good humour. After two hours, the camper was ready to go. It would have taken me days on my own and, even then, I’m not sure I could have done it.
But their kindness didn’t stop there. They invited me to join them for dinner and a seat at their campfire, sharing their food, their warmth and their company. I hadn’t realized how much I needed that simple kindness. It felt like the first deep breath I’d taken in days. I will never forget that holiday. Not just because of the accident, or the brilliance of the emergency services, but because of Sam and Hillary. They gave me a warm Tasmanian hug — just when I needed it most.

As a doctor in a famous hospital in the big city, my aid to a remote village is firm and unshakable. I am a regular visitor, not just as a medical volunteer but as a friend, a part of their extended family. The aid has been a test, and in overcoming it, we have all discovered a deeper sense of unity and purpose. The aid also has built a bond between us, one that will continue to grow stronger with each visit.
On a summer afternoon, the heat was almost unbearable, the air thick with the promise of a coming storm. As a volunteer in the remote village medical aid activity, I was aware of the urgency of our mission. The village was accessible only by a narrow dirt road, and we had to complete the medical consultations before the sun dipped below the horizon.
Shortly after I treated the last patient, I received an urgent message that made me nervous. A villager had been stung by an unknown insect and was experiencing a severe allergic (过敏的) reaction. Time was of the essence; it could be fatal if not treated timely.
I swiftly coordinated a response team, which included a local guide familiar with the shortcuts through the dense forest that separated us from the nearest hospital. We gently moved the stricken villager onto a stretcher (担架), and with the leading of the villager’s family, we began the race against time.
The journey was filled with challenges. The forest was a labyrinth (迷宫) of shadows and whispers, the damp and dangerous bushes. As it was night, our progress was slowed by the need to navigate by the dim light of our flashlights. The villager’s breathing became difficult, and his pain was clear.
In the distance, the faint but growing sound of helicopter cut through the evening silence — a rescue team was on its way. However, the trees were too dense for a safe landing. We needed to act fast, but the helicopter didn’t find us for a long time. Suddenly, an idea occurred to me while we nearly had a sense of desperation.

【答案】One possible version:
I used our flashlights to shine on the dark sky. It was a flash of hope, a brilliant streak of color against the dark. The helicopter responded, circling lower, its searchlight passing through the night as it located us. We hurriedly cleared a small area, pushing aside fallen branches to create a landing place. The rescue team’s arrival was a masterful display of efficiency. The villager was quickly yet carefully transferred to the helicopter, which lifted off as swiftly as it had landed, disappearing into the night sky.
We returned to the village and found that the villagers were still waiting for us. Obviously, they were eager to know the situation of the injured. I told them that the villager had received timely medical assistance and the doctor said there should be nothing very serious about him. Upon hearing this, all the villagers breathed a sigh of relief. After expressing their gratitude to me, they slowly went back home. Sensing their sincere heart, I truly realized the significance of medical aid and was more determined to continue this career.

I was in a bad mood because I lost my job in a company, which had closed down due to budget cuts. I hoped an art class would help take my mind off my troubles, so I signed up for one at our community center. That’s where I met Rosemary.
When I arrived, the place was packed. There must have been twenty students there. Most of the seats were taken, and the learners all seemed to know each other. I found one empty table for four at the back.
That’s when Rosemary rolled in. She was very thin and wore a scarf around her head. She wheeled herself to”my table”, and I had to admit, I felt a little uncomfortable. I’m not sure why, but I did. Two very elderly women joined us, one using two canes (拐杖) and the other with a walker. I felt like I was back in high school, at the unpopular table.
We were told that the teacher was running late due to car trouble. Rosemary smiled, and her face transformed from a sad, sickly person to a sort of angelic, hairless being. She had no eyebrows or eyelashes and wore no makeup, so her beauty was indeed the real deal.
“Hi, I’m Rosemary, and I’m in a war with breast cancer, but it won’t steal my joy!” she said cheerfully, tapping her notebook.
“Hi, I’m Pat,” I said.
Carol and Nancy introduced themselves, and there we were.
I didn’t know what to say after that. “I’m a bad-tempered, unemployed secretary ” But I was saved by the teacher’s arrival.
The course was six weeks long, and the four of us always sat together. By the third week, I viewed Rosemary as a lovely person, not as a cancer patient. We became friends and even exchanged our addresses. She missed the fourth week, and of course we feared the worst.

【答案】One possible version:
The next day, we paid a visit to Rosemary in the hospital. She was lying in bed, and her face lit up the second she spotted us. She told us the latest treatment had made her a bit weak, so she’d skipped class. Luckily, the doctor said her condition was stabilizing and the treatment was working better than expected. We pulled up chairs beside her bed and stayed with her for a while, chatting and laughing. I asked her what made her so optimistic. Rosemary reached for her notebook on the bedside table. “I have something to show you,” she said with a mysterious smile. She handed the notebook to us, and on the cover, it was written “Small things to be grateful for”.
We were excited about the good news and opened her notebook of “small things to be grateful for”. The first page listed simple joys: the warm sunshine that came through the window this morning, the kind nurse who brought me an extra blanket, and the thoughtful messages from my art-class friends. As we turned the pages, we saw more entries full of sincere gratitude. “I started this notebook when I got sick,” Rosemary explained. “It helps me focus on the positive things in life, no matter how small they are. And it shows even in darkness, there’s always light.” Deeply moved, I found my unemployment stress melted away. I felt like a fighter just like her — gratitude is truly a powerful force in the face of hardships.

Mr. Hatch, a tall, thin man with a permanently serious face, had lived in a quiet neighborhood for years. He followed a rigid and predictable routine that never changed. Every day, he left home at 6:00 for the shoelace factory, ate the same cheese-and-mustard sandwich at lunch, and stopped at the newsstand and grocery store on his way back. He read the paper and went to bed by 9:00 every night. A man of few words, he kept to himself, with no one knowing his family or entering his house.
Everything changed on New Year’s Eve. When Mr. Hatch arrived home, he noticed a brown-paper package by the door. He rarely received anything except the newspaper. Just then, Postman Goober approached, smiling: “That’s for you.” Mr. Hatch, who had only ever nodded at him, mumbled a “Thanks”.
Curiosity overwhelmed him. Tearing open the paper, he found a heart-shaped box tied with a pink bow, filled with colorful candies along with a tiny card that read “Somebody misses you.” Realizing it could be a New Year gift, which he had never dreamed of, the lonely man was excited and touched. His expression melted and a smile appeared on his face for the first time in years. He tasted the candies that filled his cold heart with sweetness.
The next day, he dressed up in a clean shirt, tied a tie and set out cheerfully, hoping to meet his secret admirer. His smiling face surprised the neighbors, who were more shocked when he greeted everyone warmly. At lunch, he sat in the cafeteria's center, sharing candies with others. On his way home, he offered to watch the newsstand for the cold-stricken owner, and then helped the grocer find his lost dog. That evening, he baked cakes using his mother’s old recipe. The pleasant chocolate smell drew neighborhood kids around. He served them cakes and lemonade. For the first time, he felt a sense of belonging.

The neighbors noticed his change and they decided to act. They realized they should do something to help him feel better. They knew that what he really needed was the love and care from the community. So they prepared a big surprise party for him, inviting all his neighbors. When Mr. Hatch opened the door, he was surprised to see all his neighbors there, who were smiling and holding a big cake that read “We miss you”. He was so touched that he cried. From that day on, Mr. Hatch was no longer lonely. He had found a new family in his neighborhood.

Oliver was a small and introvert (内向的) boy who kept to himself. He was quiet and preferred indoor activities. Sitting in the corner of the class, he was very much a loner.
At the beginning of the semester, Oliver had a new classmate, Alan, who had just returned to England. Alan was assigned a seat next to Oliver. To his surprise, within weeks, he became good friends with Alan even though they were poles apart in personality. Alan was popular, outspoken and artistic. “Alan is all that I want to be,” Oliver thought to himself. He began listening to the music Alan listened to and having similar haircut. He even quit his drama club and started playing the online games that Alan played. He seemed to have been out of his loneliness.
It was not long before Oliver was introduced to Alan’s “cool” friends. He told himself that he would try all means to be part of the group. He would follow them to the football games and join the art club after school so he could spend more time hanging out with them. Oliver followed them around laughing when they told jokes, agreeing when they had opinions—most enthusiastically at the ones he disagreed with. He did not dare to differ in opinions as he would not want them to think badly of him. This continued for several months. At last, Oliver felt relieved that he had finally fitted in.
One day, Oliver overheard Alan and his cool friends talking. “Oliver is such a loser,” one boy commented in a playful tone. “He just follows you around trying to be you. He copies you; he does not have a personality of his own!” another boy exclaimed. Alan laughed, to make matters worse, he added, “That fellow wears me out. I wish he would leave me alone. He thinks we are best friends. A thorough fool!”

【答案】Paragraph 1:
Oliver stood still to the ground and could not believe his ears. Trembling and sobbing, he collapsed on the ground, feeling alone and betrayed. He had no choice but to cry all the way back home. Seeing his mother, he couldn’t contain his sorrow, pouring the incident out to her, who would always be there for him whenever he felt down. Stroking her trembling boy, the mother said gently, “just be yourself, Son! People will like you for who you are. ” Oliver had heard the remarks a million times before, yet he never truly got the point. Suddenly, it all clicked.
Paragraph 2:
Oliver decided to change himself after hearing his mother’s words. He bought a new schoolbag and chose a haircut he fancied. He dropped his art class and joined the drama club. He made new friends who liked him for who he was. He rediscovered himself. If he had not been given the chance, he might have been too concerned with “fitting in” desperately to experience some of the “best” times of his life. It dawned on him that despite the pain he felt that day, it was a gift they had given him, which taught him to be himself.

My name is Mae. I’ve always been passionate about exploring and solving problems — whether fixing a broken toy or figuring out how a phone app works. This led me to join our school’s Coding (编程) Club. In our first lesson, Ms. Davis told us that coding is more than writing lines of code. It is about using technology to make life easier for others.
“Your project,” she announced in class one day, “is to create a simple app that solves a real-life problem.” “You have one week to prepare,” She added gently, hoping this would give us enough time to find inspiration and finish the project.
The challenge stayed with me as I walked to my neighbor Mrs. Thompson’s apartment after school. She had invited me for tea, as she often did on Tuesdays. Mrs. Thompson was kind and cheerful, but lately she had been a little forgetful, often misplacing her keys or repeating the same story twice without realizing it. When I arrived, she was in the kitchen.
“Mae! Good timing,” she greeted me warmly, and then stopped, glancing at the kettle. “Did I already boil water for tea ”
I checked the kettle — it was still warm. We laughed about it as I poured water, and soon we were chatting. Our conversation turned to her weekly book club with friends. Mrs. Thompson smiled, talking about her two old friends. Mr. Brown arrived late for the game, and Mrs. Smith failed to bring her glasses twice. “We’re quite a group,” she said.
Then her expression grew thoughtful. “We manage, of course. But sometimes I think wouldn’t it be nice if something simply reminds us Take medicine. Water the plants. Friday for book club.” She tapped her head with a soft laugh.
Her words sank in. At that moment, an idea formed in my mind. As I stood up to leave, I smiled mysteriously, “Give me a few days, and I’ll bring you a little surprise.”
“Oh I’ll try not to forget that,” she laughed.

Our family had always shared a deep love for creating handmade crafts. My mother, sister and I spent hours designing, painting, sewing, and putting together all kinds of unique items, never once thinking about making money from them. It never crossed our minds to turn this hobby into a business until people started offering to pay for our handmade items.
Full of excitement we took our first steps toward making this dream a reality. We applied for and received our business license, set up a small display at the Country Sampler store in Knoxville, Tennessee, and started researching major craft shows across the area. Starting late in the season, we missed several deadlines but managed to get on waiting lists. To our great surprise, a spot suddenly became available at a big outdoor street festival. We were thrilled, yet we only had a few weeks to prepare.
In the middle of all this chaos, another small problem arose. Mom accidentally broke her car key off inside the door lock. With all the craziness in the weeks leading up to the craft show, she had no time to find a locksmith (锁匠) so she put off getting it repaired. She didn’t think it was that important. Besides, she could still open the door by putting the remaining part of the broken key into the lock.. She had to use her spare key in the ignition (点火装置), but that was just an inconvenience.
The two days before the festival were extremely busy. The night before the show, we only slept for a couple of hours. We packed nearly all of our products into Mom’s car, filling it from floor to ceiling.
We arrived at the festival at 6:00 in the morning, eager to set up our stand. At first, everything seemed to be going smoothly. The space was ready, so we went to get our crafts — only to discover that Mom had locked her broken key in the car.
