Chinese seal cutting, also called seal engraving, is one of the four traditional Chinese arts, together with calligraphy, painting and poetry. It has a history of more than 3,000 years in China.
In ancient China, seals were first used as a symbol of power. Emperors and officials used seals to sign their names on documents. Later, seals became popular among artists and scholars. They used seals on their paintings and calligraphy works, to show their names and their feelings.
Seal cutting has two main styles: the characters in relief (朱文) and the characters intaglio (白文). The relief style means the characters are raised, while the intaglio style means the characters are cut into the stone.
To make a good seal, you need good tools and materials. The most common material for seals is stone, such as Shoushan stone, Qingtian stone and Balin stone. The main tools are carving knives. A good seal needs not only good carving skills, but also good calligraphy and design.
Now, Chinese seal cutting is listed as an intangible cultural heritage of China. More and more young people are starting to learn this art, to pass it down to the next generation.
