When her family sold the farm and moved to a nearby town, Emma was excited. But when she got to the new school, she felt very lonely. With a sigh (叹气), Emma turned her attention back to the present. The bus came to a stop.
“Welcome to the Leinweber Nature Center,” her teacher said. “A guide will give us a presentation about animals, and then you’ll help to feed the baby squirrels, now, I want everyone to find a partner.” Emma didn’t have any friends yet—who would be her partner Emma got close to Julia, a talkative and outgoing girl. “Could I be your partner ” Emma asked uncertainly. “Sure,” said Julia warmly. Together, the girls walked into the center. After the presentation, a keeper showed them how to hold the bottle of milk for baby squirrels. Then the girls started to feed their own baby squirrels. After the babies finished eating, the keeper asked, “Would you like to help feed the adult squirrels, too ” Emma was quick to volunteer, but when the keeper opened the first cage, the squirrel inside jumped out. Emma remained calm (镇静的), held out her hand, made quiet sounds, and then quickly got it. “Wow!” Julia said. “You’re always so quiet, I thought you were afraid of everything, but you were brave.”
“I know that when animals are frightened or excited, you have to stay calm.” The keeper nodded in agreement and asked Emma, “Would you be interested in volunteering to help out with the animals at the center ”

“Five more minutes” is the first thought of many people when their alarms (闹钟) ring in the morning. This first thought is usually followed by hitting the snooze button (贪睡按钮) and falling back asleep for a few more moments. Hitting the snooze button has become a habit for millions of people, but it is time to examine this habit and develop new habits for feeling more rested during the day.
Though hitting the snooze button allows people a few more minutes of sleep, it causes unhealthy sleep patterns (模式). Most people think if they are tired when they first wake up, they need more sleep. However, they are mistaken when they conclude that any sleep is good sleep. Sleeping is a process (过程) with different cycles. To feel fully rested, the body must go through all the sleep cycles. Falling back asleep after hitting the snooze button restarts the process, but when the alarm rings again several minutes later, the process is interrupted (被打断). The body has not gone through all the cycles, and this can cause the body to feel sleepy for the rest of the day. This sleepiness can influence memory, the ability to make choices, and performance at work or school.
Sleepiness may also happen if the body’s biological rhythm (节奏) is interrupted. People normally fall asleep at night and wake up in the morning because their rhythms are operating (运作) naturally. The rhythms are influenced by repeated use of the snooze button, which can cause feelings of sleepiness during the day and
an inability to fall asleep at night.
People need to consider developing different ways of getting up instead of depending on the snooze button. The easiest choice is to put the alarm on the other side of the room. Having to get out of bed to turn it off decreases the possibility of hitting the snooze button. Another choice, if your routine allows it, is to just reset the alarm. Setting your alarm for 30 minutes later will make the whole sleep process longer instead of always restarting it. However, it must be stressed that getting up 30 minutes later in the morning is not an excuse to stay up 30 minutes later the night before.
Though a few extra minutes of sleep may seem to promise a better start to the day, hitting that snooze button creates an unhealthy sleep pattern.
23.The 2nd paragraph is mainly about ________.
A. what unhealthy sleep patterns most people have
B. what people should do to feel fully rested in the daytime
C. why people feel like going back to sleep after first waking up
D. why a few minutes of sleep after first waking up causes bad effects
24.What can we learn from the passage
A. Hitting the snooze button helps people fall asleep at night.
B. People wake up because their biological rhythms are interrupted.
C. Getting up several minutes later helps people feel more energetic.
D. Putting the alarm a bit far from the bed helps form healthy sleep habits.
25.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage
A. Don’t Wake Up Late! B. Don’t Use Alarm Clocks!
C. Don’t Touch That Button! D. Don’t Change Sleep Patterns!
C
Have you ever made a decision but still felt unsure Maybe you wrote a message but paused (停顿) before sending it, or chose clothes but kept changing your mind. Perhaps you were about to say something in class, but the words stopped at your lips. In a world that values quick actions, hesitation (犹豫) is often seen as a weakness. People are told to “just go for it” or “don’t think too much.” But what if hesitation is actually a wise guide
Our minds and bodies work together in ways we don’t always notice. When we hesitate, it might be a sign that we need to pay attention to something important. Imagine standing in front of a door but not wanting to open it. Your body could be telling you about possible dangers your mind hasn’t fully noticed. This hesitation isn’t always fear—it might mean we need more time or information to make a better choice. Sometimes, the pause itself is protecting us from rushing into something we might regret.
Hesitation can also come from our intuition (直觉). It helps us know what is truly right. For example, if you feel nervous about joining a competition even when you are fully prepared, ask yourself: Is this fear from past failures, or is your intuition warning you about real danger ________. Pretend you have already chosen to join and notice how your body reacts (反应) — Does it feel light and calm, or heavy and worried If your shoulders feel tight and your stomach feels uneasy, that might be your body’s way of speaking. Learning to read these signals can help you understand yourself better.
Here’s how to use hesitation wisely: First, slow down. If a decision feels too big, sleep on it and think again the next day. A fresh mind often sees things more clearly. Second, talk to friends you trust or write down your thoughts. Their advice or your own words might show hidden worries or new ideas. Sometimes, simply saying your thoughts out loud can help you find the answer. Third, remember that hesitation is not failure. It is a tool to collect missing parts of the story before taking action. The wisest choices often come after thoughtful pauses, not quick jumps.
In the end, hesitation teaches us to listen—not just to our thoughts, but to our whole selves. Our hearts, our bodies, and our minds all have something to say. Next time you pause, ask: What is my body or intuition trying to say The answer might help you make wiser choices. After all, the path to better decisions sometimes begins with a moment of stillness.
26.Why might we hesitate before entering a room according to the passage
A. Because the body senses possible uneasiness.
B. Because the door is too heavy to open.
C. Because we want to get in quickly.
D. Because we need others to help us.
27.Which of the following can be put in the blank in the 3rd paragraph
A. To calm down, listen to music.
B. To find out, try this simple test.
C. If you don’t think so, just do it.
D. If you don’t know, ask a friend.
28.What does “sleep on it” mean in Paragraph 4
A. Change decisions. B. Make quick choices.
C. Reconsider after rest. D. Forget the problem.
29.The writer probably agrees that ________.
A. hesitation is usually a sign of being weak
B. better choices can be made with proper hesitation
C. we should make quick decisions without thinking
D. hesitation always comes from terrible past experiences

30.Panda Express: Chinese Food or American Style
Have you ever heard of Panda Express It is one of the most popular fast-food chains in the United States, serving what many people call “Chinese food”. With over 2,000 restaurants across America, Panda Express has become a familiar choice for many families. But is the food there truly Chinese
Panda Express was founded in 1983 by Andrew Cherng and his father. The restaurant offers dishes like Orange Chicken, Beijing Beef, and Chow Mein. These names sound Chinese, but the taste might surprise visitors from China. For example, Orange Chicken, the most famous dish at Panda Express, is sweet, deep-fried, and covered in a thick orange sauce. It is delicious, but you would hardly find anything like it in a traditional Chinese restaurant.
So how is Panda Express different from authentic (正宗的) Chinese food First, the flavors are different. Authentic Chinese food often balances different tastes—salty, sweet, sour, and spicy—while Panda Express dishes tend to be sweeter and saltier to suit American preferences. Second, the cooking methods differ. Many Panda Express dishes are deep-fried, but traditional Chinese cooking uses more methods like steaming (蒸), stir-frying (炒), and braising (红烧). Third, the ingredients (食材) vary. Panda Express uses broccoli, which is common in America, but traditional Chinese dishes often use bok choy (小油菜) or other Asian vegetables.
While the food is different from traditional Chinese dishes, Panda Express is important for cultural exchange between the two countries. It brings Chinese tastes to Americans and serves as a bridge between the two cultures. For many Americans, Panda Express was their first experience with Chinese food, and some of them later wanted to try real Chinese cuisine.
In conclusion, Panda Express offers an American version of Chinese food. It may not be exactly like what you would find in Beijing or Shanghai, but it has created its own unique style. Whether you prefer Panda Express or authentic Chinese food, both can be enjoyed in their own ways.
