Read the short text below and pay attention to the use of verbs in bold.
Last term, I tried roller skating for the first time. At first, I could not even stand up on my skates. My skating teacher is really nice. He helped me practise, and little by little, I found it very enjoyable. Now I’m not so afraid of skating. I’m going to have my skating lesson at the weekend. I can’t wait.

We use the simple past tense to talk about things that _____________________ (are happening now, happened in the past).

一般过去时( I )
一般过去时表示过去某个时间发生的动作或存在的状态。
定 义：
基本结构：
主语 + 动词的过去式 + 其他
表示过去某个特定的时间发生的动作或存在的状态。常和表示过去的时间状语连用，如just now、 yesterday、last week/ month/ year、three days/a week ago、in 1998等。
一、一般过去时的用法
e.g. Mother felt ill last week. 妈妈上周觉得身体不适。
Simon was unhappy yesterday. 昨天西蒙不开心。
He was a teacher three years ago. 三年前他是一位老师。
一般过去时的其他用法:
(1) 表示过去一段时间内经常性或习惯性的动作。
e.g. He often helped me with my English last term.
他上学期经常帮助我学习英语。
My mother cooked breakfast for me when I was a child.
在我小时候，妈妈为我做早餐。
(2) 表示主语过去所具备的能力或性格。
e.g. The girl could play the piano at the age of 6.
那个女孩6岁时会弹钢琴。
They could speak three languages fluently five years ago.
五年前他们能流利地说三种语言。
二、动词过去式的构成规则
规则动词的过去式变化：
1. 一般情况下在动词原形后直接加-ed
stay → stayed
want → wanted
talk → talked
hand → handed
work → worked
play → played
watch → watched
clean → cleaned
2. 以不发音的字母e结尾的动词，在词尾直接加-d
love → loved
arrive → arrived
hope → hoped
use → used
move → moved
like → liked
dance → danced
close → closed
3. 以辅音字母+y结尾的动词，去掉y再加-ied
study → studied
worry → worried
carry → carried
cry → cried
bury → buried
try → tried
dry → dried
copy → copied
4. 以辅音字母结尾的重读闭音节动词，双写最后一个辅音字母,再加-ed
stop → stopped
shop → shopped
plan → planned
hug → hugged
drop → dropped
chat → chatted
beg → begged
fit → fitted
不规则动词的过去式变化：
变化 举例
保持不变 set—set cut—cut
元音有变化 come—came draw—drew
辅音有变化 lend—lent build—built
元音、辅音均有变化 catch—caught buy—bought
特殊变化 am/is—was are—were
