Jesse Barber, a documentary photographer and lifelong resident (居民) of Western North Carolina, brings a deeply personal camera to cover the destruction (破坏) of Hurricane Helene. As a graduate of Appalachian State University in Documentary and Appalachian Studies, Barber focuses on shooting rural life in his beloved mountains. However, Helene presented an unexpected challenge.
“The photos of destruction are endless, and are going to continue to be endless,” he said. Barber drove over 1,000 miles in the area over three days last week to Brevard and beyond, finding the shots, talking with rescue workers and residents. But as a local, Barber brought a different focus than many journalists and photographers covering the storm’s destruction and the beginnings of recovery. “I started to feel the outsider in me becomes the insider,” he says.
His rich knowledge of the conditions in the area proved important. When an editor suggested staying in an Ashville hotel, Barber knew it was impossible. Leaving his own flooding basement, he found no gas or food, realizing the situation was far worse than editors understood. At a Marion gas station, he photographed a man whose house was half-destroyed, a powerful introduction to the degree of personal loss.
Barber’s approach focused on connection over quick disaster shots. “I’m trying to experience and listen,” he says, valuing the sense of place and people. While recording shocking geological changes, he spent much time seeking resilience (韧性) and hope among the disaster. He met tired and hungry residents maintaining positive attitudes, like a Bat Cave-born volunteer firefighter in Chimney Rock who insisted, “We’ll be all right… Things will be a little different but we’ll still be here. ”
As national attention changes, Barber will remain focused on Appalachian. His quick action during Helene, as he said, “showed his efforts to stay rooted in place,” making him feel even stronger about his choice to live in Morganton over larger art centres. “I do feel like my work and my guidance matter. I just want to do my people good.”
4. What makes Barber’s work different
A. His use of advanced equipment. B. His focus on rapid disaster reaction.
C. His unique connection with local areas. D. His rich experience in disaster rescue work.
5. Why did Barber refuse the hotel suggestion
A. Outdoors had better photo opportunities. B. He needed to remain closer to his family.
C. The hotel was too far from the disaster site. D. The particularly bad situation made the stay impractical.
6. What does Barber want his photos to mainly show
A. The horror of disasters. B. Amazing geological changes.
C. Hope and people’s spirits. D. The beauty of his hometown.
7. What is the main idea of the text
A. Trained volunteers cover storms quickly.
B. hurricanes totally destroy small communities.
C. A photographer records disaster-stricken community by heart.
D. National media can play a key role in disaster reporting.

How important has Internet become in our lives The Pew Research Center conducted a survey to celebrate the Web’s 25th birthday. The researchers were greatly heartened by what they found.
“In 2006, only 14 percent of American adults used Internet. Today, it’s 87 percent,” said Lee Rainie, the director of the Pew Research Center’s Internet Project. “It is what has impressed us the most.”
The survey also showed that 70 percent of the Internet users have been treated kindly or generously online, while 25 percent of respondents said they have been treated unkindly. More than half—56 percent—of users said they’ve seen an online community come together to help someone solve a problem. 25 percent said they’ve left an online group because members were too unpleasant.
When Pew asked questions about whether being online has enriched people’s relationships—or not—the results were very positive: 67 percent of Internet users said their online communication with family and friends has generally strengthened those relationships. Only 18 percent said it has generally weakened those relationships.
According to the survey, 53 percent of Internet users said Internet has become the hardest tech tool to give up. It is 15 percent higher than the result of a similar survey conducted in 2006. In fact, more people said they would have a harder time stopping using Internet than giving up TV. (These days, so much great television streams across the Internet that it makes sense.)
“In our survey, we have found that the Web makes a few people very unhappy. There’s strong evidence pointing to the fact that Internet users tend to compare their daily lives with the ‘highlight moments’ of their friends’ lives,” said Lee Rainie. “It’s really silly.”
8. Which is the most impressive result of the latest survey
A. Users’ dependence on Internet. B. The fast growth of Internet users.
C. The kindness of online communities. D. The strengthened family relationships.
9. How many participants found it the hardest to give up Internet in 2006
A. 15%. B. 38%. C. 53%. D. 68%.
10. What message does Lee Rainie seem to convey in the last paragraph
A. Online depression cannot be avoided. B. Don’t show off in online communities.
C. Don’t make unnecessary comparison. D. Copy your friends’ wonderful lifestyles.
11. How do the researchers feel about the results of the survey
A. Optimistic. B. Worried. C. Unconcerned. D. Doubtful.
D
People experience emotional pain — often in the form of guilt (内疚) — when spending money. This is called the moral tax (道德税) or pain of payment. We can reduce this guilt by separating the enjoyment of a purchase (购买) from its payment. However, the best way to reduce moral tax is by receiving a gift—an item you don’t have to pay for at all!
As a result, the best gifts are items that normally bring particularly high levels of moral tax. This may include goods that appear overpriced and therefore bring particularly bad feelings of guilt upon purchase.
Curiously, it’s not about the actual amount of money spent. What matters most are the emotions brought by the gift (or the guilt taken away). Consider the following example as an explanation.
For weeks, Anne has had her eye on a pair of designer shoes. They look incredibly stylish and go perfectly with her new winter coat. She’s got enough money to pay for the shoes but doesn’t think the purchase is necessary. After all, she already owns three other pairs of winter footwear. Still, Anne makes sure to mention the shoes to her husband Alex, and on Christmas morning she is overjoyed to open a large box containing the shoes. She is happy with the gift even though Alex bought it from their family bank account.
Looking at it from an economic point of view, Anne’s happiness doesn’t make any sense. Since she shares a bank account with her husband, it doesn’t matter who buys the shoes. The loss of money is the same either way. How can Anne be happy with Alex making a purchase she previously thought unnecessary It all comes down to moral tax. By making the payment on Anne’s behalf, Alex cuts her wife’s pain of payment. Anne gets to enjoy her precious shoes guilt-free.
The experts suggest that the best gifts are things that people really want but refuse themselves to avoid feeling guilty. What are your partner’s secret wants and guilty pleasures Unfortunately, that’s the one question you need to answer yourself.
12. What does the moral tax refer to in the text
A. The guilt of receiving an expensive gift. B. The problems caused by overspending.
C. The feeling of satisfaction after making a purchase. D. The emotional pain coming from spending money.
13. Why does Anne refuse to buy the shoes herself
A. She has got a similar pair. B. She is influenced by the moral tax.
C. She decides to put off satisfaction. D. She only wants to use her husband’s money.
14. What may an economist think of Anne’s excitement
A. Unreasonable. B. Unreal. C. Interesting. D. Expected.
15. What do the experts suggest about the best gifts
A. They should be practical and useful.
B. They should be expensive to show appreciation.
C. They should be items that people really want but avoid buying due to guilt.
D. They should be items that don’t cost people too much but are meaningful.

A boy on skates turned around the corner very fast and crashed into me before I jumped out of the way. We fell together and the box I’d been carrying flew from my hands and landed in the street. A moment later, a car drove past, sending the box spinning in circles. The skater got up, said sorry, and sped away around the corner.
“Are you OK, Emily ” Aiden asked.
“I think so.” I stood up and slowly moved my aching arm.
“Oh no! Look at Mom’s present!” Aiden’s face was red.
I picked up the crushed box and opened it. The flower vases inside were broken. I closed the box and left it in a garbage can on the sidewalk, then started hurrying toward home. Aiden had to run at full speed to keep up with me. When we got to the apartment, we threw ourselves down on chairs in the kitchen.
“It isn’t fair! Why did that happen ” Aiden said.
“I didn’t even see that guy! He came out of nowhere,” I said angrily.
Aiden’s lips trembled. “Mom would love those vases.”
We’d saved our money for weeks to buy vases of pink flowers for Mom’s birthday. We have other vases, but not a full set that matches. I wished I could throw something against the wall and scream, but I knew I couldn’t. I’m the older one. I had to hold it together.
“I want to make her happy,” Aiden said.
“We’ll think of something else to give her as her present,” I said, trying to cheer up Aiden.
“Like what ” he asked. “We don’t have any money left.”

It also strengthens your immune system and reduces the risk of health problems. What’s more, if you feel down, going for a run can cheer yourself up.
If you’re new to running, here are some tips for you — a pair of good running shoes is necessary. It’s important to warm up and cool down properly before and after running. (131 words)

答案】
I thought hard and said, ” Maybe we can make a present for Mom.” Aiden’s eyes lit up instantly, and he jumped off the chair. We rummaged through the drawer and found a stack of family photos — Mom at the beach, us building a snowman, the three of us laughing at a picnic. We spread them on the table, cut colorful paper borders, and glued everything onto a big cardboard. Aiden drew tiny pink flowers around the edges, and I wrote a note: “To the best mom in the world, love from Emily and Aiden.”
When Aiden saw tears rolling down Mom’s cheeks, he froze for a second, looking worried. But Mom shook her head, wiping her eyes with a grin. “These are happy tears,” she said, holding the collage close. “This is the most wonderful present I’ve ever received.” She knelt down and hugged us tightly, saying the handmade gift meant more than any store-bought item. Later, she hung the collage above the couch, where we see it every day, a reminder that love is the best gift of all.
