NEST-WATCHING: The Hidden World of Birds’ Homes
Ever wondered what that bunch of small sticks is in your tree Birds build nests to lay eggs and raise their young. Because birds vary greatly in size and habitat, their nests also come in many forms. Here are several types you may notice in your neighborhood this spring.
Cup Nests
The most common type. They are shaped like small cups and safely hold newborn birds. Look for small, round structures between tree branches made of small sticks woven mon birds are robins and sparrows.
Burrow and Cavity Nests

Platform Nests
Large structures high in trees. Platform nests, favored by storks and eagles for 360-degree views of their surroundings, enable these birds to notice danger earlier. They can often be reused for years.
Ground Nests
Ground nests are built by birds with limited flight ability. Look for tall sides or grassy areas that help hide the nest. These birds make their nests directly on the ground to keep eggs and young birds out of sight.

My husband is experimenting with letting pigs be free range. It’s a difficult experiment because he doesn’t have a lot of other farms as a model. Most farmers think the pigs need to be confined (圈养) so they are manageable to the farmer. There are so many pigs and only one farmer, so most of farming is about how to get the pigs grown, and to market, without letting them run wild on the farm.
Now we have pigs moving all over the farm and it’s fun to watch the little baby pigs. They run around like dogs, playing with each other and with things they find. They even try to slip into the alpaca (羊驼) barn. Pigs are curious about everything. They have the IQ of a three-year-old child, and they are just so fun to see exploring and learning on their own. When they want milk, they go back to their moms, who generally stay by the nest.
I am blown away by how similar this is to my experience with homeschooling. The pleasure I get from leaving my boys to explore on their own is that I get to see who they really are. Here’s my son, after he somehow climbed high, getting ready to fly into a pile of hay (干草). I see what they choose to play with, what they are curious about, and what they ignore. I see them come back to me when they need something and then run back over to whatever interests them.
My favourite part of my life right now is seeing pigs and boys in ways I’ve never seen them before. We are all lively and engaged if we get to do what is right for us.
4. What would most farmers think of how the author’s husband raises pigs
A. Unusual. B. Advanced. C. Efficient. D. Balanced.
5. What can be inferred about the pigs on the author’s farm now

B. They try to run away from their moms.
C. They enjoy exploring the farm on their own.
D. They behave differently from other animals.
6. What delights the author when she watches her sons exploring the farm
A. Their creativity and bravery. B. Their similarity to baby pigs.
C. Their curiosity and individuality. D. Their eagerness to run back.
7. What does the author’s observation demonstrate
A. A child without education is like a bird without wings.
B. We should give children roots to grow and wings to fly.
C. Education is the strongest tool to make the world better.
D. Learning is to the mind what exercise is to the body.

As go the young, so goes society. Young adults were early adopters of cell phones, social media, and the Internet. Now all of these technologies are universal. So how are members of Gen Z using generative AI today
In October 2025, we partnered with Gallup and the Walton Family Foundation to survey a representative sample of nearly 2,500 U.S. adults between the ages of 18 and 28 years old. While OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently claimed that “older people use ChatGPT as a Google replacement” while “people in their 20s and 30s use it like a life advisor,” our data tell a different story.
Most young people are actively using AI chatbots. Three out of four (74%) young adults in the U.S. used an AI chatbot at least once in the last month. This represents a considerable jump from the 58% of young adults in the U.S. who reported “ever” using ChatGPT in a February 2025 Pew survey.
Our survey reveals that Gen Z’s relationship with AI is more realistic than personal. Two out of three (65%) respondents reported using an AI chatbot as a replacement for Google searches in the last month. Just over half (52%) used AI to “help [them] with [their] work.” And 46% used AI to “help [them] with writing”. Roughly a third (32%) of young adults reported turning to AI for help with their personal life, including “advice about relationships or life decisions.” One in four (23%) young adults report using chatbots “as a friend,” and one in ten (10%) young adults said they used an AI chatbot “as a girlfriend or boyfriend.”
This pattern conflicts with recent popular reports that companionship and therapy are some of the leading uses of generative AI. But it aligns with objective log reports of Claude and ChatGPT released by Anthropic and OpenAI, respectively, which both report that conversations about work outnumber those about advice or companionship.
8. Why does Gen Z’s relationship with AI matter
A. They are good at human interaction. B. Their habits shape future trends.
C. Their ideas help improve technologies. D. They are the largest generation.
9. How does the author challenge Sam Altman’s statement
A. By questioning his qualifications as an CEO.
B. By analyzing his company’s technical flaws.
C. By presenting figures from a joint survey.
D. By quoting stories told by young users.
10. What can be inferred about how Gen Z uses AI chatbots
A. They avoid AI use in personal life. B. Productivity beats social uses.
C. They prefer communication online. D. Entertainment is their top concern.
11. What does the underlined words probably mean
A. Challenge. B. Publish. C. Inspire. D. Match.
D
On Super Bowl Sunday, two teams take the field but only one will emerge victorious. In a presidential election, only one candidate can win enough votes to take the nation’s highest office. A zero-sum belief is the idea that for me to win, you must lose. However, psychologists have found that people tend to perceive non-zero-sum situations — such as the economy or classroom learning — as win-lose when they aren’t.
The new study found that as people age, this tendency decreases. The University of Chicago research team also discovered that younger people today are even more likely to engage in zero-sum thinking than previous generations.
According to psychologists, there is danger in perceiving a situation as competitive when it’s not. Immigrants are often perceived as hurting the economy or taking away jobs. “It is documented that this is really false. If anything, it’s exactly the opposite,” says study coauthor UChicago Professor Boaz Keysar. “Immigrants enlarge the pie, as opposed to taking away from others.”
The team ran four experiments surveying nearly 2,500 participants split between 18-to 30-year-olds and 65-to 80-year-olds. Each rated their agreement with general statements, such as: “If somebody gets rich, someone has to get poor.” In fact, people are not ranked against each other. Technically, everyone at the company could receive a high rating. But younger people are more likely to see situations as zero-sum. One reason is they perceive resources as more scarce, shaped by competitive education, job, and housing markets. Older people, by comparison, are more positive thinkers and have a more abundant mindset.
Exposing this bias is important, the research team says, because it’s key to accurately understanding the world. We also might be missing out on the potential for a win-win.
If you’re worried about your own zero-sum thinking, there’s hope. Time is on your side. “If anything, it might be a reason to call your grandparent, call an older person in your life. Get advice from them, because they might offer a different perspective,” Olivieri says.
12. How does the author introduce the topic of zero-sum thinking
A. By giving age-based comparisons. B. By describing possible social effects.
C. By citing familiar real-life examples. D. By presenting recent research findings.
13. Why does Professor Keysar mention immigrants
A. To highlight possible economic concerns. B. To clarify the critical role immigrants play.
C. To show a wrong belief about immigrants. D. To compare job competition among groups.
14. How are young people influenced by competitive environments
A. They consider resources as limited. B. They gain a more positive outlook.
C. They feel more pressure from others. D. They are more likely to avoid risks.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. Zero-Sum Beliefs Across Generations. B. Zero-Sum Thinking — I Win, You Lose.
C. Younger People Show Less Zero-Sum Thinking. D. Listen to Grandma — Life’s not a Zero-Sum Game.
