Travel has become increasingly inconvenient and sometimes impossible over the last couple of years. However, museums around the world are digitizing their collections, enabling people to tour the museums from afar.
The British Museum, London
The British Museum contains objects from around the world, including the Rosetta Stone, with three versions of a text that helped researchers learn to read ancient Egyptian. NeSmith and Maxwell are long-time residents (居民) of Oglethorpe County, Georgia, and they have known each other for almost 50 years. In 2021, Maxwell called NeSmith to let him know that because of health problems, he would be closing his weekly newspaper, The Oglethorpe Echo. NeSmith decided to prevent the nearly 150-year-old local newspaper from being forgotten.
NeSmith remembered waking up at 6 a. m. after that phone call, He jumped into his truck and drove to The Echo offices. Upon arriving, he suggested that his friend think of a new solution.
“Well, what are we going to do?” Maxwell asked him. “Are you going to buy the newspaper?” NeSmith looked up, searching for an answer, Then, a sudden idea hit him.
He would create an organization and Maxwell would donate The Echo to it. After leaving the office, NeSmith called Charles Davis, director of the University of Georgia’s Grady College.
“I’ve got an idea,” NeSmith told him. “I want to turn The Echo into a real-life experience for students at Grady College who want to be reporters.” Davis loved the idea, and he and NeSmith developed a course with The Echo as its foundation. Students could experience a working newsroom which would act as a stepping stone into their careers.
Of course, they needed someone to run the newspaper. Then Andy Johnston, who had been teaching at Grady for a month, appeared, “I believe in the project. We’ve heard about other newspapers closing, especially in rural counties,” Johnston said, “When that happens, it means their only source of news and the only thing that holds people together is closing.”
Johnston teamed up with Amanda Bright, who taught the course. Bright, a community reporter, helped create new digital platforms for The Echo, including an email newsletter and a website.
The Echo also ran on a team of 12 volunteers that worked at the main office. The reason The Echo was able to continue is that everyone worked together — the students, Grady College, NeSmith, Maxwell, and the residents of Oglethorpe County.

An art exhibition that combines scientific knowledge with creative inspiration was recently presented in Albany. The exhibition featured artworks from MIX Artists in the Great Southern that showcased unique art-science cooperation between contemporary artists and marine (海洋的) scientists working in the region. The waters of the south coast and around Albany are well-known for their unique diversity of plants and animals, and the works conveyed important marine science knowledge and current research to a broad audience.
The Western Australian Marine Science Institution (WAMSI) provided opportunities for the artists to learn from marine scientists through talks, presentations and field trips. The artists also followed up with ongoing self-research and observation of their environment.
Dr Jenny Shaw, WAMSI Research Director, said, “It’s been a great opportunity to move science into the community and also see different interpretations of marine research topics.” The scientists benefited from explaining their work to different audiences, and the interest from the artists was incredibly high, contributing to a shared appreciation for the marine environment.
MIX Artists coordinator Annette Davis said the cooperation gave the artists fantastic insight into another world, and working with the scientists was fundamental to how the artworks had developed. “Responding with intuition (直觉), curiosity and imagination, the artists have interpreted their findings through chosen materials and techniques and created artworks to help move this understanding into the wider community,” Davis said.
The pursuit of marine science inspired some artists, whose artworks often centre around the finely-balanced coastal environment and the impact of structural change. Catherine Higham used seagrass and bamboo to make a large listening horn (喇叭) to listen to underwater life. Christine Baker’s work, titled Micro Plastic Menu, was inspired by a talk on microplastic pollution and how it enters food chains.
8. How did WAMSI assist the artists?
A. By aiding in materials creation. B. By providing technical guidance.
C. By offering a platform for art sales. D. By organizing educational events.
9. What can we infer from the text?
A. The art exhibition of scientists is very eye-catching.
B. People are much more interested in science than in art.
C. The participation of artists contributes to the spread of marine knowledge.
D. Artists should go into the classroom to learn cultural knowledge.
10. Why is the work Micro Plastic Menu mentioned in the text?
A. To highlight the personal experiences of the artist.
B. To illustrate that artists draw inspiration from science.
C. To demonstrate the use of technology in contemporary art.
D. To emphasize the role of art in environmental conservation.
11. Which is the best title for the text?
A. An Art Exhibition by a Famous Marine Artist.
B. A Cooperative Art and Marine Science Exhibition.
C. An Exhibition Showcasing Traditional Art Forms.
D. A Conference Discussing Marine Science Advancements.
D
It’s not just humans who get wiser as they age-animals do too, according to a growing body of research. Age is not just a number: as animals get older, they behave differently depending on their life experiences, gain richer knowledge of their environment, and often pass it on to younger members of their group, researchers say.
Previous research on aging focused on negative health aspects, says researcher Keller Kopf, an ecologist at Charles Darwin University in Australia. “That idea about old individuals not being important for populations, or for environments, is really not the full story,”he says. The more he examined different groups of animals, the more he found remarkable examples showing the value of older creatures.
Primates (灵长目动物), whales, elephants and pack-hunting animals all have old individuals who carry vital cultural knowledge and maintain social structures, according to Kopf’s research. Older female elephants, for example, have a “social memory” of who is a friend or enemy, and are more aware of potential (潜在的) dangers such as listening out for lions.
Kopf’s paper talks about the importance of “cultural transmission” that not only recognises that animals have culture, but that these individuals deliver their social learning to other individuals. Older individuals tend to have gathered the most knowledge.
On a more personal level, the discovery of the importance of older animals made Kopf think more about our own species. “It has made me think a lot more about how we don’t value older people in our society. Many people of advanced ages are forgotten about,” he says. This is a loss not only for the old people themselves, but for all of human society, he says. “What is that doing for the modern world?”
12. What can we know about animals getting older?
A. They leave little experience. B. They pass food to the young.
C. They always behave the same. D. They become more intelligent.
13. Why is previous research mentioned in Paragraph 2?
A. To introduce the negative health aspects.
B. To stress the uniqueness of Kopf’s study.
C. To identify potential dangers of being old.
D. To recognise the value of the past research.
14. What does the underlined phrase “cultural transmission” probably mean?
A. Spreading knowledge and experience.
B. Maintaining social structures effectively
C. Exchanging individual cultural knowledge.
D. Discovering life experiences independently.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Animals Deserve Kindness. B. Age Defines Everything.
C. Youth Holds the Key. D. Wisdom Comes with Age.

Tina was a high school girl who loved comparing herself with others. She always cared about the latest clothes, expensive phones, and designer bags. Whenever someone showed off a new item, she’d feel jealous and immediately turn to her parents for something better. Having no idea how to deal with it, her parents had no choice but to satisfy her. With what she wanted on, peers would follow her, flattering her from head to toe. Tina smiled, with a barely perceived sense of emptiness.
At the beginning of the fall semester, Tina noticed a new face from another class. It’s Rita, who just transferred from a neighboring school. The girl was always alone, with simple clothes and an old schoolbag, but a smile hovered on her lips wherever she went. After school, Rita never got involved in classmates’ discussions about brands or luxuries. Instead, she herself spent most of her time in the classroom, studying or helping classmates with mathematics problems, or in the school library, doing voluntary jobs. One month later, Rita got straight As in a series of comprehensive tests and was awarded “the most popular student” in the school assembly. Her shining smile was brighter than ever, and young boys and girls began to gather around her.
One afternoon, Tina walked up to Rita, who was sitting under a tree and reading a book. “Hi, Tina. I’m Tina. What makes you so happy every day? You didn’t even have any friends.” Tina poured out her puzzles. Rita looked up with a familiar smile, “I feel every single day fruitful. I feel happy just because I’m on the way of being the one I want to be. That’s the secret.” Something hit Tina at that very moment. She turned back and headed home, without saying anything, not even goodbye. That night, Tina lay in bed and stared at the ceiling, replaying Rita’s words in her mind and lost in deep thought.

答案】One possible version:
The next day, Tina decided to make a change. She stopped asking her parents for expensive things that she actually didn’t need. She even gave away some of her unused designer bags to charity. After class, she no longer dived into discussions as she used to. Instead, she devoted herself to academic subjects in the classroom, sometimes helping others who got stuck. What’s more, she joined Rita, volunteering in the school library, sorting books and assisting younger students. Every small act made her feel a sense of fulfillment she had never experienced before.
Besides self-satisfaction, Tina received plenty of praise and compliments from others. Teachers and schoolmates admired her for being so kind and hard-working, let alone her greatly improved grades. Her parents were not only proud of her academic performance, but were also surprised to see her getting rid of unrealistic comparisons. Rita smiled sincerely at her, with her thumb up. Tina was overflowing with happiness, hardly containing her excitement. It was then that she truly understood that real happiness didn’t lie in what could be easily got from owning better items, but in what was earned with great efforts and what was done for others.
