The Everleigh Centre, a new children’s facility that cost ?600,000 to build, opened this week in Penhill, Swindon, an area once known as one of the region’s most disadvantaged.
This new centre is expected to make a big difference for families since they no longer need to travel far to find educational help for their children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).
Koral Averies, a local mother whose daughter Eva has autism (自闭症) and sensory issues, expressed her happiness about the new facility. She said, “The centre offers amazing facilities, and it’s a safe place for children to grow and learn. However, I believe there’s still a great need for more similar services.”
In January, a report illustrated that the demand (需求) for SEND services had risen at a greater rate in Swindon than the national average, with particular concern about the lack of resources in the south and east areas of Swindon.
The Everleigh Centre is housed in a repurposed nursery and offers various services, including a brightly lit ball pit, a sensory zone, an outdoor swing for children in wheelchairs, and a special space for parents to relax. The centre was officially opened on October 8 by Adorabelle Amaral-Shaikh, the education cabinet member, and Neil Hopkins, the deputy mayor of Swindon.
Ms Amaral-Shaikh explained that Penhill was chosen for the centre due to its central location for children with special needs. She added, “It’s not just about providing a school place, but about creating an environment that meets each child’s specific needs.”
To improve services, Ms Amaral-Shaikh mentioned that the local government had received a ?3.4 million grant for SEND support. She also welcomed feedback (反馈) from families on how to make the services even better.

Teenagers who spend more time on after-school activities and less than two hours of screen time after school are more mentally healthy, according to a study published in the journal Preventive Medicine.
The study used information collected from more than 28,000 seventh-grade Canadian students between 2014 and 2018. The students first answered questions about their usage of screen time after school, including how much time they spent watching TV or something else. Then, students reported how many days they had taken part in after-school activities such as sports or arts programmes. After that, researchers asked students to describe their state of mind. For example, when given a statement such as “I start most days thinking that I will have a good day”, they could choose to what level they agreed with it on a scale (等级).
Researchers said in the study some of the results were expected. Students with no after-school activities usually had high levels of screen time, for example. And they expected girls would score higher on negative indicators (消极指标)of mental health. as earlier research had found that they tended to have higher levels of anxiety compared to boys.
What was noteworthy, researchers say, is that even among students who took part in after-school activities, 46% still went beyond the recommended screen time of two hours. At the same time, 67% of students who didn’t take part in after-school activities also had more than two hours of screen time. Together, this suggests high screen time among teenagers generally.
“The findings suggest that after-school activities are valuable for the happy growing of teenagers,” the study said. “While past studies have proved the importance of after-school activities for social and academic development, the present study shows their importance for good mental health results.”
8. Which of the following came last when students took part in the new study?
A. Talking about their lifestyles.
B. Introducing their after-school activities.
C. Reporting their mental states on a scale.
D. Answering questions about screen time use.
9. What do the researchers find about teenage girls?
A. They often have higher levels of satisfaction.
B. Few of them take part in after-school activities.
C. Anxiety has become a serious problem among them.
D. Too much screen time may be more harmful to them.
10. What does the author want to show by using the numbers in paragraph 4?
A. Earlier findings about screen time are wrong.
B. High screen time is common among teenagers.
C. No after-school activities mean no screen time.
D. Screens attract teenagers more than after-school activities do.
11. Why are after-school activities so important according to the new study?
A. They are good for teenagers’ physical health.
B. They help to improve teenagers’ mental health.
C. They encourage teenagers’ social development.
D. They allow teenagers to become better learners.

When AI art generators become popular around the world, a question stays in people’s minds: should their works really be thought of as art? While the technology is still developing and has things to improve, it’s clear we must balance its problems against the amazing artworks that good AI can make.
Art is defined as something made from imagination, skill, experience and emotion, usually created to show something for people to enjoy. Human artists spend time and effort turning their inner thoughts into real works. In the same way, AI uses a lot of computing power to look through huge amounts of data, link a user’s request to related information, and try to present it as well as possible. The main difference, though, is that AI follows orders instead of having a strong feeling to express itself.
With one press of the enter key, AI art generators can produce more than 1,000 original works. But a mass-produced copy of the Mona Lisa is less valuable than Leonardo da Vinci’s real painting. Why? Scarcity — there’s only one true version. This brings up questions: Should anyone pay for AI-generated art? And if an artist sells AI-made great works, what price is right?
AI art works when a program copies the styles of existing artists to create new pieces based on what people ask for. But who should get credit for the artwork — the machine or the person using it? Can original artists take legal action for copyright violation? These questions make it hard to mix AI and the art industry, and also make more arguments against seeing AI-generated art as products that can be sold.
Once we solve these problems, we can deal with the biggest question: When an AI-generated painting wins an award, who should get the prize?
12. What makes AI art different from human art?
A. It doesn’t show humans’ inner feelings.
B. It comes from people’s life experience.
C. It needs less money to make.
D. It mixes various work styles together.
13. Why does the writer mention Mona Lisa in paragraph 3?
A. To show classic artworks are well-liked.
B. To prove AI painters are better than human artists.
C. To point out possible problems with AI art’s value.
D. To suggest a new way to keep art masterpieces.
14. What can we learn from paragraph 4?
A. AI art helps sell more artistic products.
B. Artists can create more works with AI’s help.
C. The art industry will have tough competition.
D. AI art makes copyright problems harder to solve.
15. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To explain why AI-generated art is more popular than human art.
B. To discuss the arguments and questions around AI-generated art’s status.
C. To introduce how AI art generators create original artworks.
D. To prove that AI-generated art should not be seen as real art.

六、书面表达

Mrs. Thompson, a retired teacher, was well-known for her insightful advice and genuine willingness to help others. Many high school students often turned to her for guidance and as her neighbor, me included.
One afternoon, feeling troubled and uncertain about my future after a disappointing exam,I decided to knock on Mrs. Thompson’s door.
“I don’t know what I’m doing with my life,” I admitted, my eyes fixed on the floor.“It feels like everyone else has it all figured out, and I’m just stuck.“ My voice trembled with sadness and a hint of fear.
I had bombed my last math test, and it felt like that failure stayed in every corner of my mind, increasing my anxiety about college examination and what I might want to pursue. While my friends seemed to advance effortlessly through their studies, I was struggling to stay afloat. The feeling that I was falling behind only deepened my sense of hopelessness.
Mrs. Thompson listened carefully, her face a picture of calm and understanding. Without saying much, she handed me a small tomato seedling (苗) in a pot. The tiny plant, with its delicate green leaves, seemed to symbolize a slight sign of hope.
”Let’s plant this in the garden,“ she said gently. “Water it every day and make sure it gets enough sunlight. But for a whole week, don’t focus on its progress. Just trust that it’s growing.”
Every day, I faithfully watered the little seedling, as if I was putting my own hopes into it.I carefully ensured it got the right amount of sunlight, positioning it just so under the sun’s rays. With great self-control, I resisted the urge to examine it too closely. As the days went by, I felt a mix of eagerness and impatience, like a child waiting for a long-promised gift, longing to see some sign that my efforts were making a difference.

【答案】“Let’s go to check on the plant,” Mrs. Thompson said to me a week later. With a heart full of anticipation, I followed her to the garden. When we reached the spot where we’d planted the seedling, I was amazed. The once - tiny plant had grown significantly. Its leaves were greener and more robust, and it stood taller, reaching towards the sky. Mrs. Thompson looked at me and smiled, “You see, just like this seedling, growth doesn’t always happen at a speed we can immediately notice. Your efforts in studying are like the care you gave this plant. They’re working, even if you can’t see the results right away.”
One day, as I bent down to water it, a tiny yellow flower caught my eye. A sense of joy and accomplishment washed over me. That little flower was a symbol of hope and proof that my care had paid off. It made me realize that just as the seedling needed time and consistent care to bloom, so did I in my studies. I no longer felt as lost or hopeless. From then on, I faced my study challenges with newfound confidence, knowing that with perseverance, my efforts would surely lead to beautiful “blooms” in my future.
