With an ageing population, the ‘downsizing dilemma’ is one confronting thousands of older Australians. For the Sydney couple, Anne and Dudley, they made the choice to downsize into independent living before any health crisis forced them to.
Their decision was clear. They no longer needed a large house for big parties. Research shows most want to stay in their local area, and for them, it was an easy one — they could see their new apartment, ‘The Grove by Elysium,’ from their old house’s balcony.
However, letting go was the hardest part. Their home was filled with items of emotional attachment. They passed some, like a 1927 dining table, to their grandchildren, and donated other pieces to charity. “You can’t keep it all,” Anne says.
Since the move, life has become simpler and more enjoyable. Living in a smaller space is easy to keep clean, and they have no maintenance worries. They’ve also embraced the community’s social life, participating in yoga, walking groups, and happy hours. Dudley, with balance issues, uses the onsite pool regularly. Most importantly, they feel a sense of security. “We have comfort knowing that if anything happens, we are already here. We don’t have to move again,” says Dudley.
Helping them through this emotional transition was their granddaughter, Emma O’ Sullivan, a professional organizer. The experience with her grandparents gave her a new perspective, deepening her empathy for clients. Her company now helps families with the entire downsizing process, handling everything from removing unnecessary items to setting up the new home with care and patience.
4. Why did the Sydney couple decide to downsize
A. They had to move due to health problems. B. They wanted to escape from the local area.
C. They needed to save money for big parties. D. They considered a large house unnecessary.
5. What does the underlined phrase “letting go” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Giving up jobs. B. Forgetting past life experiences.
C. Selling old furniture. D. Parting with memorable possessions.
6. What has Emma O’ Sullivan been doing recently
A. Organizing social activities. B. Dealing with personal items.
C. Assisting with downsizing process. D. Providing emotional guidance.
7. What is the text mainly about
A. Less is more. B. Smaller space, happier elders.
C. More downsizers, better communities. D. Forgetting the past, embracing the future.

Animal cafes are very popular in Japan, both with locals and foreign tourists. But a new study has found that some of these cafes could be bad for human — and animal health.
Over the last 20 years, animal cafes have become increasingly popular in Japan’s cities, due to the fact that many residents aren’t able to keep pets in their small apartments. Japan’s first animal cafe was a cat cafe that opened in Tokyo in 2004. And as that idea proved popular, new businesses have introduced wild animals like owls, hedgehogs, monkeys and otters.
But this summer, World Wild Fund for Nature Japan, working with researchers at Hokkaido University, did a survey of 25 animal cafes in and around Tokyo that allow customers to contact wild animals. And they found many cases of poor infection control. The researchers also found bacteria in four of the cafes, and salmonella bacteria in two. Both types of bacteria can make humans seriously ill.
Although 24 of the cafes provided cleaning chemicals for their customers, only 14 had hand-washing stations. And while staff at 23 of the cafes told customers to disinfect their hands when they came in, only 14 told them to do so when they left. At 13 cafes, animals were found to have health problems that were likely caused by stress and poor animal management. The study says such issues are a crucial sign of a cafe’s overall health level. At 23 cafes, there are wild animals that are considered dangerous for human contact. However, 11 of these cafes did not explain the possible risk of injury from bites, or how to behave safely around the animals.
The study also found that 31 species in the cafes are endangered, which suggests these animal cafes could be putting wild populations at risk. The study’s authors say a change in the law is needed to make wild animal cafes safer for humans and animals.
8. What makes animal cafes more and more popular
A. Tourism Marketing. B. The small living space.
C. The population growth. D. The pet economy boom.
9. What do we know about the survey from paragraph 3
A. Bacteria posed risks for humans. B. Customers carried harmful bacteria.
C. It was funded by Hokkaido University. D. Researchers needed to feed wild animals.
10. What has caused health problems in the animals at some cafes
A. Injuries caused by bites. B. Lack of proper hand-washing.
C. Frequent contact with humans. D. Stress from poor management.
11. What is a suitable title for the text
A. Animals Made for Good Apartment Pets
B. Health Concerns Arose due to Infection Increase
C. Health Risks Were Found at Japan’s Wild Animal Cafes
D. Animal Cafes Should Be Allowed to Keep Endangered Species
D
No matter how old we get, there will always be some songs that transport us back in time. We only need to hear a few notes of a tune, and we remember where we were when we first heard it, what we were doing and who we were with.
For most people the songs that remain most meaningful are those from their teens and 20s. The continued impact of these songs is due to something called the “reminiscence bump” — a tendency for people to have more vivid memories from their youth and early adulthood. During this time our brains are still developing, and we have less control over our emotions, which makes our experiences more vivid and the music we hear more intense.
That’s why, for most people, the emotional connection to music peaks during adolescence and early adulthood. In fact, a new study from Finland suggests that this peak is actually around the age of 17. Previous studies have looked at the “reminiscence bump” in Western populations, but the Finnish research team wanted to look at how it affects people globally, and if it affects men and women differently.
They studied 1,891 people from 84 countries. The participants were first asked to share their age and to name a piece of music that was important or meaningful to them. The researchers then compared the participants’ ages with the release dates of the music they named. The average peak age for personally meaningful music was 17, although there was some difference between men and women. And, for men, the peak age was around 16, while for women it was 19.
One possible explanation for this is that men tend to form their music-related memories earlier, during the resistant stage of adolescence, perhaps choosing songs that celebrate independence. Women, on the other hand, may prefer music that relates to important social and emotional connections, which take longer to develop.
12. What can be learned about “reminiscence bump” from paragraph 2
A. It transports us to childhood. B. It generates vivid memories.
C. It intensifies youthful experiences. D. It helps recollect adolescent events.
13. What does the Finnish research team focus on
A. Challenging existing theories and collecting new data.
B. Identifying the peak age and comparing music preference.
C. Expanding the research scope and observing gender difference.
D. Confirming previous findings and analyzing emotional intensity.
14. What can we infer from paragraph 4 about the study
A. It is step-outlined. B. It is thought-inspiring.
C. It is state-funded. D. It is time-consuming.
15. Why do men and women have different peak ages
A. They mature at varying ages. B. They favor distinct music themes.
C. They have diverse musical talents. D. They value separate social behaviors.

I never thought I'd be a “runner”. I was the girl who finished her laps last in gym class, the girl who was breathless after two flights of stairs, and the girl who complained of pain after a two-minute jog. Pretty sad, really.
But a few years ago, I changed my tune. I was walking with a group of friends in the Race for the Cure, a race to raise money for the fight against breast cancer, when one lady caught my eye. She was one of the weakest looking women I'd ever seen. She must have been close to seventy years old, wearing a hat to cover her bald head and a T-shirt with the word “Survivor”. She was so small that it seemed as if a swift breeze could tip her over.
But, she was running. And she was passing me and my group of twenty-something friends. I couldn't stop staring at her. She ran slowly, but determinedly — as if each step pushed her cancer further into her past. She was practically walking on her cancer every time her feet touched the ground.
Then, I looked at my friends. Here we were, in the best time of our lives, and this seventy-year-old cancer survivor was kicking our butts! Right at that moment, I swore that in the nextRace for the Cure, I'd be running along with her.
A week later, I found myself at the gym. I got on and started to jog. Three minutes after I started, my face was bright red. I was sweating and felt like my lungs were going to burst. I had to slow down to walk. I thought about the woman at the race. She made it look so easy. I kept it up. I was able to go a little longer each time. Three and a half minutes. Four minutes. Five.

【答案】 As a loyal reader of “Growth & Hobbies”, I genuinely recommend dance as a fulfilling and excellent way to spend your free time.
At its heart, dance is the art of expressing emotions and stories through body movement to music. It emphasizes rhythm, coordination, and grace — from the discipline of ballet to the freedom of freestyle.
I recommend it for two key reasons. First, it provides a powerful physical and mental release. Dancing builds fitness, enhances grace, and cultivates discipline, all while serving as a vibrant outlet for stress and creativity. Second, it uniquely builds confidence and social connection. Whether dancing alone or in a group, it encourages self-expression and teamwork. This combination of artistic expression and personal growth makes dance a truly enriching hobby.
【答案】
A year later, I was at the Race for the Cure again. This time my legs carried not just the weight of my body, but the memory of every early morning and aching evening I had spent pushing myself further. When the race started, I concentrated on the simple motion: the lift of a knee, the push of a foot and the swing of an arm. For a fleeting moment, lost in the rhythm, I could almost believe I’d be running along with her. But the illusion was fragile. By the second mile, my legs felt like rubber, screaming with familiar exhaustion. By the third mile, my breath came in gasps and a voice in my head screamed at me to stop.
When I was giving up, I saw the woman from the year before. The morning sun glinted off her “Survivor” shirt, which shone like a quiet beacon. She wasn’t looking at the runners around her, her gaze fixed on the road ahead, steady and untiring. Seeing her, a fresh wave of determination washed over me. The burn in my lungs and the ache in my legs didn’t vanish, but they no longer mattered. This time, I wasn’t just running a race. I was running toward the person I had sworn to become, following in the footsteps of the woman who had taught me that true strength lies in the fire inside you, the same fire I had learned to keep alive, one stride at a time.
