It was 1 a. m. on Christmas morning, and Marisa Shumaker was busy preparing a surprise for her 4-year-old daughter, Aubree. For weeks, Aubree had been begging for a real 61-key piano keyboard as her Christmas gift, instead of a small toy one. After Aubree fell asleep, Shumaker took out the box she had hidden, hoping to assemble(组装) the stand and bench so that the keyboard would be ready when her daughter woke up.
However, when she opened the box, she was shocked to find only the stand and bench inside,no keyboard. She suddenly realized that the keyboard was sold separately. Panic filled her, as she remembered a scene from a movie they had watched the night before, where characters doubtedSanta because they never got the gifts they wanted. She worried that Aubree would be heartbroken when she found no keyboard.
Desperate to fix the situation, Shumaker checked online for overnight delivery and nearby open stores, but found no luck. She then posted her trouble in a neighborhood Facebook group, pouring out her sadness and fear of ruining Aubree’ s Christmas. Andy Spencer, who lived 5 miles away, saw her post just before 2 a. m. He thought of his daughter Hailey’ s little-used 61-key keyboard and decided to help.
With the support of his college-aged children, Hailey and Justin, Spencer took the keyboard and drove to meet Shumaker at a nearby grocery store. He refused to accept any money, asking only for a photo of Aubree's happy face on Christmas morning. The next morning, Aubree was overjoyed to see the keyboard and played it eagerly, even leaving other presents unopened.
Months later, Aubree still practiced the keyboard every day. For Shumaker, the kindness from a stranger not only saved her daughter's Christmas but also made her believe in the magic of Christmas again—— the magic of selfless kindness.

For many years, scientists thought humans first learned to make fire only about 50,000 years ago. But a groundbreaking discovery in England suggests this skill is far older—— pushing the earliest evidence back by 350,000 years.
The new evidence comes from Barnham, an archaeological site in England. Researchers found a patch of unusually red soil, a sign of repeated heating. Tests confirmed that the soil had been heated to 400-750°C, and this was not caused by any natural fire in the area.
Excavations(挖掘) also found four stone hand axes broken by fire. But the strongest evidence was two tiny pieces of iron pyrite(黄铁矿). This stone can produce sparks when struck by another stone, like flint. Iron pyrite is not naturally found within 10 miles of the Barnham site, which means ancient people must have brought it there to start fires. While researchers did not find scars on the stones from the fire-sparking process, this is still the oldest proof of human fire-making intentionally—— about 400,000 years old.
The findings challenge long-held theories.“Before this, I would have said people didn’ t make fire then,” says Amy Clark, an archaeologist from Harvard University. Other researchers also find the discovery exciting.“The evidence for fire is really solid,” says Gilliane Monnier.“It’ s a very rare find.”
However, some experts urge caution. No human remains have been found at Barnham, so it is unclear who made the fire. Dennis Sandgathe, another scientist, notes this skill may have been discovered and forgotten many times over thousands of years. He points out that scientists have dug up many other sites from the same time period, but none contained iron pyrite—— the smoking gun of the new research.“If making fire was widespread back then,” he says,“we would have found this stone in other places, too.”
28. What does the Barnham discovery suggest about fire-making
A. It relied mainly on natural fires.
B. It was widespread 50,000 years ago.
C. It began much earlier than believed.
D. It was commonly seen at ancient sites.
29. Why are the iron pyrite pieces considered important evidence
A. They can burn for a long time.
B. They are native to the Barnham area.
C. They indicate clear marks of being struck.
D. They show early humans made fire on purpose.
30. What does the underlined phrase“smoking gun” in paragraph 5 mean
A. A theory with weak support.
B. A tool used for hunting animals.
C. A common stone for making tools.
D. A key piece of evidence for human fire-making.
31. What is the author's attitude to the research
A. Objective. B. Supportive. C. Cautious. D. Doubtful.
D
Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming how we understand and experience beauty, offering exciting possibilities while raising serious concerns.
On the positive side, AI serves as a collaborative tool in creative attempts, combining human creativity with algorithms(算法) to produce unique artistic outcomes. Virtual try-on experiences allow individuals to test makeup, hairstyles, and clothing before making physical changes, potentially expanding the range of beauty ideals. AI can also analyze facial features to provide personalized beauty recommendations, tailoring skin care routines and makeup shades to each person's unique characteristics. In these ways, AI becomes a vehicle for self-discovery.
However, AI also presents ethical risks. There is a danger of deepening societal beauty pressures and reinforcing unattainable standards. AI-powered filters(滤镜) and editing tools, widely available today, allow users to change skin texture, facial balance, and body shape in seconds. As a recent post on“The Hidden Dangers of Online Beauty Filters” warned, relying on such technology for social presentation can lead to body image issues, lower self-esteem, and social anxiety.
Experts suggest several strategies to limit these negative effects. Developing self-awareness about how AI-generated images affect self-perception is essential. Choosing media feeds to follow accounts that celebrate authenticity and diversity, rather than unrealistic standards, can help. Practicing self-acceptance through activities like mirror meditation, limiting screen time, and promoting real-life connections are also effective ways to maintain a balanced perspective.
Ultimately, while AI can enhance our appreciation of beauty, it should not replace the genuine human experience and the emotional connections we get from seeing beauty in each other.
32. Why does the author mention“virtual try-on experiences”
A. To test physical changes.
B. To illustrate AI's positive role.
C. To show AI's technical complexity.
D. To argue against overuse of beauty tools.
33. What can we learn about AI-powered beauty filters
A. They boost artistic creativity.
B. They may cause psychological risks.
C. They are technologically challenging.
D. They are unavailable to ordinary people.
34. What do the strategies focus on in Paragraph 4
A. Guiding experts’ research.
B. Changing people's appearance.
C. Promoting self-management.
D. Updating technological application.
35. Which of the following statements would the author agree with
A. AI in beauty requires cautious use.
B. AI has no place in the beauty industry.
C. AI's advantages clearly exceed its risks.
D. AI may eventually create human beauty.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Introverts are quieter, more thoughtful, careful, and really like being alone. Extroverts are more talkative, outgoing, energetic, and really like socializing. Friendships can suffer when those differences conflict. 36 Here are some tips on how introverts and extroverts can be good friends.
Don't label your friends. Personality exists on a continuous range, not a rigid fixed divide. 37 In fact, most people show a mix of both characteristics, and their tendencies can shift depending on age and situation. You should view these as a way to understand others, not as fixed labels.
38 If your friend is exhibiting a behaviour that's bugging you, consider whether it might be due to personality differences instead of bad intentions. And then show a little grace accepting and respecting these personality differences, which will help friendships last long.
Say what you need. It is unavoidable for both sides to complain about each other. Your friends aren't mind readers, so hiding your feelings will only lead to misunderstandings. 39 For instance, introverts can tell extrovert friends to pause more while talking, and extroverts can also share their need for more active responses politely.
Appreciate your friend's unique qualities. Extroverts bring vitality and passion to daily life, while introverts offer calmness and thoughtful insight, making their bond more diverse and meaningful. 40
To put it simply, introverts and extroverts are not destined to be contradictory. With mutual understanding, frank communication and respect for differences, they can break personality barriers and build sincere, long-lasting friendships.
A. Don't take behaviors personally.
B. Try to change your own personality.
C. It means no one is completely one type or the other.
D. People can be categorized into two opposite extremes.
E. Actually, the two types can form deep, lasting friendships.
F. It is necessary to express your inner needs directly and bravely.
G. Such a positive contrast enriches friendship and makes it more precious.

Lily, a senior student deeply in love with dancing, had been preparing carefully for a major provincial dance competition for a long time. It was a dream event for young dancers, and it would be the first time for her to step onto such a big stage. She regarded it as a great chance to show her years of practice and gain valuable experience. Therefore, she took every practice seriously and spared no effort to make herself better.
She buried herself in strict and persistent training every day. After school, she would rush to the dance studio immediately, repeating every gesture, every spin and every step again and again. She practiced even when her legs ached and she felt tired. Though the training was tough and boring, she never complained or thought about giving up. She always held the belief that hard work would finally pay off and that she would shine on the stage.
However, a month before the big event, a terrible accident completely changed everything. When she was practising a difficult and challenging jump, she lost her balance and fell heavily to the floor. Before she knew it, she had injured her ankle. The doctor's words made her desperate:She had to rest for at least two months and was not allowed to do any intense exercise or dance training.
Hearing the result, Lily felt as if her whole world had fallen apart. She shut herself in her bedroom, feeling sad and hopeless. She refused to talk to her family or meet her friends. The dance poster on the wall, which once inspired her to keep going, only made her heart ache more.
Days passed, but she still remained in low spirits. She sat by the window silently, staring blankly outside. She began to doubt herself and wondered if she would ever be able to return to the stage. For the first time, she felt lost on her long road to her dream and could hardly see any hope in the future.

Healthy Campus, Happy Life
A healthy campus is more than just a place for learning—— it lays the foundation for our physical vitality and mental well-being, enabling us to face academic challenges with full energy.
To foster such an environment, we should stick to regular exercise and balanced diets, and avoid unhealthy habits. Meanwhile, we need to build positive relationships with peers and teachers, and take part in campus activities to develop a harmonious atmosphere.
Let's spare no effort to build a healthier campus, where we can thrive both academically and personally.
第二节(满分25分)
One possible version:
One day, her mother handed her a notebook full of her dance notes. Curious, Lily opened it and started to read. The pages were filled with her childish handwriting, recording her first clumsy steps, her small progress, and her simple happiness from dancing. All these memories warmed her heart and calmed her down. She realized that dancing was never just about one single competition. A temporary injury could stop her for some time, but it could never take away her deep love for dance. Slowly, the cloud of sadness disappeared, and courage returned to her mind.
With a new state of mind, Lily began to try small movements step by step. She followed the doctor's advice strictly and did gentle exercises every day to recover her injured ankle. Although the competition was already over, and she was unable to take part in this first big stage of her life, she no longer felt hopeless. In her spare time, she watched excellent dance videos, learned new performing skills. She became more patient and strong-minded. When she finally finished a simple but smooth dance again, tears of joy came to her eyes. In her dance note, she wrote that real progress comes from persistence, not just from one chance. She believed that as long as she kept practicing, more wonderful stages would be waiting for her ahead.

W: A new copy costs 15 dollars, but I decide to buy a used one. I only need to pay half that much for it. And the book is entirely new.
M: Good. So, have you chosen all the books
W: No. There are still some to pick.

M: Hey, Karen! Did you meet Bonnie in our class
W: Yes, I did! I thought she was very shy at first. But when the teacher started a class discussion, she was the first to speak up.
M: Right. She may be the smartest student in our class. Because every time she answered, all of her answers were correct. We should invite her to join our study group!
W: That's a great idea. Do you know what She also enjoys the outdoors. Why don't we ask her to come hiking with us this Saturday
M: Actually, I already asked her to come! She said she wanted to come.
W: That was quick, Toby. Who is supposed to bring snacks for this weekend's hiking trip
M:I think Jenny is supposed to bring them. She is a true master in the kitchen. Her food is out of this world.
W: And she is very thoughtful! When I had an upset stomach last week, she noticed and brought me some hot orange juice and vitamins.

W:A northern Chinese may wonder why their southern fellows must have stir-fried vegetables as the last dish for a meal, while a southerner is always surprised when they get to know that people from the north always store cabbages before winter. Recently, different understandings of“ying cai”, or hard dishes, have caused another round of discussion on the Internet.
In northern China, hard dishes refer to those dishes which are purely made of beef, lamb and pork and other kinds of meat, and must look amazing. Also, hard dishes, are usually served in extremely large bowls rather than plates.
For most southern Chinese, however, they' re not very familiar with the northern hard dishes, but they have their own southern style hard dishes, which are usually perfectly prepared in every way—— the color, the smell and the taste. In Guangdong province, for example, soup is usually made for several hours with vegetables or seafood rather than meat. It is often considered as the hard dish and attached great importance. It is said that soup should always be served first on the table. A restaurant which is unable to provide satisfactory soup is often considered a failure.
