I left my hometown in London last year and now I have enjoyed working in this small city in China.
Learning a foreign language opens your eyes to the culture and history of a country. So in order to know more
about China, I started to learn Chinese.
But at times, I found myself in funny situations. When I greeted strangers in China, they began to talk a lot
and very fast. They asked me questions about everything. But all I could do was to look at them with a blank face. I
had no idea what they were talking about. Were they just being kind, funny or impolite Many people want to make
friends with me. But I am a bit upset when I find out the reason why they need a foreign friend. They say they want
to practice their English. I don’t need friends like this. I like friends to share my feelings and ideas with.
However, the more Chinese I learn, the more similarities I find it has with English. In English,
试卷第 1页,共 3页
“thick-skinned” is to describe a person who doesn’t care about criticism (批评 ). I was surprised to find that
“houlianpi” in Chinese means the same. And both languages share some common idioms (习语 ). For example,
“look on with folded arms” means “xiushoupangguan”, and “burn the boats” is similar to “pofuchenzhou”.
I’m still on my journey to Chinese learning. I believe that sometimes you have the most fun on a journey.

Why is history important Well, a famous writer named Michael Crichton once said,“ 51 You are
like a leaf that doesn’t know it is part of a tree.’'
History isn’t just about names and dates from the past. It teaches us about the social development. History
tells us about where we come from, what we did right and where we messed up. It’s also a guidebook to our present,
and a compass pointing to our future. It gives us warnings for the future. 52 .
试卷第 1页,共 3页
History isn’t only a study of other people 53 The people we learn about may have lived even
centuries ago, but their actions directly influence how we live our lives today. Events that seem like dates on a page
have been turning points in the story of our societies.
54 We can ask friends from different countries about the best books about their nation’s history.
We can also look into our own country’s past. We should remember stories that meant something to our country.
This will give us different ideas on world history.
History helps us learn about different parts of the world and different times in history. The historical books
about different nations are written by the people who know their histories well. Some of them are about our own
nation, and some are about other nations in the world.
55 That’s the value of history.
A.It’s also about ourselves.
B.Then how can we learn history
C.And it helps us move forward with knowledge.

Nanchong, a city in Sichuan, is famous as one of China’s “Silk Capitals” with a silk culture lasting for
centuries. To understand why silk is so important to it, we need to look back at the close connection between this
city and the beautiful material that has shaped its development.
Local farmers raise silkworms with great care, spending hours every day feeding them fresh morning-picked
mulberry leaves (桑叶) that can ensure the silkworms’ healthy growth and high-quality cocoons (蚕茧). When the
silkworms form cocoons after a month’s growth, workers who have trained for years unwind the silk threads by
hand—a skill full of warm feelings of inheriting (延续) traditional culture passed down in local families.
Nanchong’s silk industry has been a great success in producing high-quality silk since ancient times. The silk
produced here is very valuable, not only for its soft texture and excellent quality but also for its long history
carrying the city’s memories. Liuhe Silk Factory, built in 1912 with old wooden machines, once helped the country
by trading silk for medicine and weapons during the War of Resistance, making locals take great pride in their
hometown’s silk culture.
Visitors to Nanchong, whether from home or abroad, can choose different ways to experience silk culture,
like watching skilled workers in the old factory or visiting the modern silk museum to see how traditional skills live
on with modern technology. No matter which way they choose, they will leave with a deeper understanding of why
silk matters so much to this city.
