Dear Fellow Students,
Everyone knows animals are our friends. But many animals are facing the danger of extinction, because the environment that they are living in has been destroyed greatly. What’s worse, human race is killing them just for getting their fur, skin, teeth and meat.
In order to protect our resources of ecology, our government should pass laws and forbid people to hunt the animals in danger. We can work together to plant more trees and call for protecting animals’ habitats. At the same time, it is necessary to have long-term projects to help the endangered animals. Only if we protect animals well can we have a bright future.
Yours,
Li Hua

Paragraph 1:
Mary stood there, watching Tom practicing patiently and hard. His clumsy movements looked awkward, yet there was a kind of beauty in his persistence. Sweat rolled down his forehead (无灵主语句), but he didn’t stop. The sight struck Mary deeply. Tom wasn’t good at long jump, but he was still giving his best for his class. Wasn’t I facing the same thing she thought. Her heart began to race as she realized that fear, not handwriting, was holding her back. If Tom could face his weakness, why couldn’t I She suddenly felt her face warm with determination. As the sun dipped lower, she took one last look at Tom landing in the sandpit and smiled slightly, a quiet decision forming in her heart: she would accept the challenge.
Paragraph 2:
With determination, Mary stepped into the teachers’ office. Her hands were still trembling, but she spoke clearly. “Ms. White, I… I’d like to try,” she said. Ms. White looked up, a gentle smile spreading across her face. “I knew you would, Mary,” she said softly. Relief flooded through Mary’s chest. The nervousness that once tied her tongue was gone. When she left the office, she felt lighter, the world outside glowing with golden sunlight. She knew her handwriting might not be perfect, but her courage was. Sometimes, she realized, the best handwriting is written not with a pen, but with the heart.宜宾市一中2024级高二下期半期学情检测

Chinese tourist attractions have seen a roaring travel boom (繁荣) this month as millions of primary and middle school students hit the road for their first-ever autumn holiday. Several provinces, including eastern Zhejiang, southwestern Sichuan and southern Guangdong, have introduced a three-day autumn break in bined with the weekend, the vacation totals five days — a novel measure in China but widely adopted in Western countries.
These provinces are the first to follow a new guideline issued in September by nine central government departments, including the Ministry of Commerce and the Ministry of Education: The guideline encourages these provinces to adjust academic calendars to include spring and autumn breaks, with decisions based on factors like each province’s unique climate and industry production schedules, a major determining factor for parents to take time off work.
Apart from better distributing the school calendar to ease students’ academic burden, the policy also aims to stoke domestic economic consumption, especially via the tourism industry. Data from online travel agency Trip shows that tourism bookings in Zhejiang, where the new autumn break kicked off on Nov. 12, had doubled compared to last year, with parent-child trips accounting for 46% of the total bookings.
As well as providing much-needed holidays for children, the policy has been paired with supportive measures for family travel, noted Yang Han, a researcher at online travel platform Qunar, in an interview with local media. These measures include flexible work leave policies for parents and discounted family tickets at museums, science centers and scenic spots.
Amid the travel boom, trips themed around textbook featured locations — ranging from time-honored historical sites to breathtaking natural attractions — are emerging as a top choice for families. More and more parents are seeking inspiration for trips that extend children’s learning beyond the classroom walls, making education and leisure go hand in hand.

B. It is common in the West but new in China.
C. It is a five-day separate November break.
D. It has been carried out in all Chinese provinces.
25. Why are industry production schedules important for this policy
A. They reflect the unique climate of each province.
B. They directly affect students’ academic performance.
C. They are closely related to local tourism development.
D. They determine whether parents can take time off work.
26. What does the underlined word “stoke” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Control. B. Fuel. C. Evaluate. D. Weaken.
27. What is the main idea of the text
A. Autumn break policy promotes travel boom.
B. Measures drive the booming tourism industry.
C. Textbook-themed trips are a new choice for families.
D. Western holiday ideas are influencing Chinese education.

S-N-A-K-E…SNAKE!
How do you feel when you see this word Think about the animal’s long thin body, forked tongue, glassy eyes, and dull hiss. Are you afraid I always am. Even after all these years, I still remember my first-and last-visit to the Reptile House at the Zoo. Through a sheet of glass, I saw a “white fur ball” running around. It was a poor little mouse, meant to be lunch for a white, red-eyed snake. “How awful!” I cried, running straight out of the exhibit.
So it’s no surprise that I panicked when I watched the trailer (预告片) for Zootopia 2. It features Gary the snake, the first reptile in Zootopia. But I was not alone. As soon as Gary appears on stage, the Zootopia citizens in the audience run away in every direction. The snake is considered a “bad guy” around the city, and the sequel (续集) follows his journey to “set things right, probably with some help from Judy and Nick.”
The short trailer got me thinking: Why are snakes unwelcome anywhere, even in an animated animal paradise Are they “bad” because they can kill That’s the law of the jungle, though-only the fittest survive. Or maybe this fear of snakes runs deeper. In many Chinese folktales, for example, snakes are mysterious. They have the power to bring terrible droughts (旱灾) and floods. If that’s the case, we may not forget that it was the snake-headed Nüwa and Fuxi who created humankind.
Research suggests that our fear of snakes may be inborn. My daughters, strangely enough, aren’t afraid of these legless animals at all. They love watching documentaries (纪录片) about snakes and will no doubt enjoy Zootopia 2. As they watch the film, they may finally understand why their strong father fears snakes. At the same time, I’ll keep wondering about my (and our) fear of snakes. Will Gary successfully “set things right” in Zootopia — and maybe, just maybe, in our hearts, too
28. The author’s initial reaction to the word “snake” is ______.
A. curious B. terrified C. indifferent D. fascinated
29. In Chinese folktales, snakes are often portrayed as ______.
A. creators of human beings B. symbols of good luck
C. mysterious and powerful (with destructive abilities) D. gentle and harmless creatures
30. What do researchers suggest about the fear of snakes
A. It is learned from parents and society.
B. It is an inborn instinct in humans.
C. It only exists in adults, not children.
D. It can be easily overcome by watching films.
31. The author hopes Zootopia 2 will ______.
A. make snakes more terrifying in animated works.
B. help people rethink their fixed impression of snakes.
C. become the most popular animated film of the year.
D. change the plot setting of Zootopia series.
D
Almost every week the world takes another step in the direction of artificial general intelligence. The most powerful AI models can do an astonishing range of tasks from writing detailed reports to creating video on demand.
Small wonder, then, that so many people worry they will soon be not needed to requirements. Earlier this year global Google searches for “AI unemployment” hit an all-time high. In cities such as London and San Francisco, “How long do you think you have left in your job ” is a common topic of conversation. But is ChatGPT actually putting anyone out of work
Lots of experts claim that it is. Many point to a recent paper by Carl Benedikt Frey and Pedro Llanos-Paredes, both of the University of Oxford, which suggests a link between AI and declining demand for translators. At the same time, however, official American data suggest that the number of people employed in interpretation, translation and the like is 7% higher than a year ago. Fintech firm Klarna also stopped its AI-driven customer service, reaffirming human support options. Some link young college graduates’ higher relative unemployment to AI replacing their entry-level knowledge-intensive tasks, but this trend began in 2009, long before generative AI emerged, and their actual 6% unemployment rate is low.
Analysis of US occupational employment data shows AI-vulnerable white-collar jobs (back-office, finance, sales, etc.) have not seen AI-related losses; their employment even rose slightly. US unemployment is low at 4.2% with strong wage growth, against claims of declining labor demand. Other wealthy economies show a similar trend: the OECD’s 2024 employment rate reached a record high, with solid earnings growth in the UK, euro area and Japan.
There are two competing explanations for these trends. First, few firms actually use AI for serious work, with less than 10% of American companies employing it for production. Second, companies adopting AI tend to keep workers, as the technology mostly boosts efficiency rather than replacing jobs. Whatever the explanation, for now there is no need to panic.
32. Why does the author mention global Google searches in Paragraph 2
A. To imply AI has put people out of work.
B. To inform people of AI unemployment rate.
C. To remind AI is a common topic of conversation.
D. To show people’s worry about AI unemployment.
33. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about
A. The link between automation and job losses.
B. Reasons for college graduates’ unemployment.
C. The development of AI affects translation industry.
D. Experts’ view on AI unemployment goes against facts.
34. What is the author’s attitude towards the claim that AI causes mass unemployment
A. Totally indifferent. B. Fully supportive. C. Somewhat doubtful. D. Extremely critical.
35. How does the author support his point
A. By raising questions. B. By listing related facts.
C. By giving research results. D. By comparing divided opinions.

How to Feel Better About the Way You Look
If you feel insecure about the way you look, you aren’t alone. 36 They can easily contribute to feelings of insecurity. If you would like to become more confident about your body and looks, there are steps you can take to change how you think about your body.
Accept what you dislike about your body. 37 It is not realistic to expect yourself to love everything about your body at all times. Learn to accept what you do not like without focusing on it. Be able to compartmentalize (隔开) to a degree by loving your body overall, even when you know it’s imperfect.
Practice positive self-talk. If you feel bad about yourself, you may find yourself putting yourself down a lot. You may engage in negative self-talk, which means you find yourself saying things to yourself like, “I can’t believe how fat you are” throughout the day. Try to replace negative self-talk with positive self-talk. 38 Provide your body with nourishment (营养). Many people with low self-esteem (自尊) try dieting or healthy eating as a means to change their bodies. 39 Think of healthy eating as a way of nourishing your body instead of a way of forcing your body to change.
40 If you’re feeling poorly about yourself, support is important. Seek out friends and family members who are positive. Try to spend time with people who feel good about their bodies and are generally positive.
A. Turn to people around you for help.
B. Surround yourself with supportive people.
C. People have things about their bodies they dislike.
D. Eating aims to give you a good mood instead of making you look good.
E. People read a huge number of messages about beauty standards every year.
F. Eating right can help you feel better about yourself, but do so with the right attitude.
G. You may feel unnatural at first, but it raises your sense of self-worth in the long run.

The last lesson of the day was PE class. Mary was skipping rope on the playground, surrounded by several classmates watching her. It was her best sport. The rope spun (旋转) quickly as she jumped. When time was up, the counter showed 201 skips. Smiling, Mary flashed a victory sign to the crowd. Just then, the school bell rang-class was over. Mary packed up her skipping rope. It was time to give her answer to Ms. White.
That morning, Ms. White had asked her if she would be willing to take charge of the class bulletin board (板报) for the upcoming competition. The student who usually handled it, Lily, was out sick, and someone needed to step in. Mary was shocked that Ms. White had chosen her. She responded nervously, insisting that her handwriting was terrible. But Ms. White reassured her, saying she believed in her ability and encouraged her to think it over and let her know her decision after school.
Now, walking toward the teachers’ office, Mary felt nervous. The thought of her messy handwriting being put up on the wall for everyone to see made her stomach turn. She had already made up her mind to say no. With that decision in mind, she quickened her pace and ran across the sports ground.
Mary was about to pass the sandpit (沙坑) when someone nearby caught her attention. It was Tom from a different class. In her mind, Tom had never been good at long jump, but he was practicing it. Curious, she went over to ask what he was doing. Tom explained that no one else had signed up for the long jump event, and without a participant, their class wouldn’t get any points in the school sports meeting. So when the headteacher asked if anyone would give it a try, he volunteered. Mary reminded him that he wasn’t good at it, but Tom simply said that he knew that-and that it wasn’t about being the best, but about trying and doing his part for the class. Then he went back to practicing. What a similar issue they both faced!
