Community Garden Plot Rental Program
The Fairfax County Park Authority runs a Community Garden Plot Rental Program, whose goal is to give local residents the chance to grow flowers and vegetables in the park. Our registration list follows the principle of “next plot, next person”, which ensures a healthy diversity of backgrounds and a fair distribution of plots. The gardeners show the full diversity of the county, including people from all economic and social groups.
The park authority rents over 700 garden plots in ten county parks to local residents every year. For most parks, gardeners who follow the rules can renew their rentals for the next year. But Hogge Park is different: it only offers one-year rentals that cannot be renewed. When a rental period ends, gardeners can sign up again, but they will be put at the end of the waiting list.
Garden Plot Details:
Large plots are about 20 feet by 30 feet. Renters need to provide and take care of fences, gates and locks. The park authority provides and maintains fences and raised beds. Plots are open during daylight hours, 365 days a year, unless the park is closed for some reason.
Comparison of Large and Small Rental Plots
Feature Large Plot Model (~600 sq. ft) Small Plot Model (~60 sq. ft)
Rental terms Renewable annually. Non-renewable single season (February ~ November). Priority given to the gardeners who live closest to the plot they apply for.
Tools Supplied to each gardener for personal munity shed and tools available.
Fees $ 150 per year. $ 140 at Eakin Park. $ 85 per year.
Accessibility Wheelchair access at Laurel Hill only. All plots accessible by wheelchair.
Note: All gardeners must remove garden waste from the site.
1. Why is the “next plot, next person” policy carried out
A. To attract more new participants. B. To share garden plots fairly.
C. To make the program better known. D. To increase gardening productivity.
2. What is special about Hogge Park
A. It provides non-renewable rentals. B. It doesn’t allow repeated registration.

Colin Chinnery, a British artist based in Beijing, has dedicated years to collecting and preserving the sounds of the city: pigeon whistles (哨声), the jingle of camel bells, and the calls of street sellers in Beijing’s hutongs. These century-old soundscapes carry a generation’s memories. In 2005, while sharing tea with a group of foreign musicians, Chinnery caught a distinctive sound from whistles attached to flying pigeons. This moment marked the launch of his career as a sound artist.
After recording the pigeon whistles, Chinnery resolved to capture the sounds that were gradually disappearing. His work gradually became a documentation of Beijing’s cultural identity. “Most traditional culture in the West exists in museums, and what remains is largely performed in concerts or stage shows. In contrast, in Beijing, traditional culture is still deeply rooted in people’s daily lives, accessible to everyone,” Chinnery noted.
In 2023, Chinnery brought his recordings to the Sound Art Museum. The sounds showcased in the museum are a witness to history, representing a valuable cultural heritage. After capturing diverse sounds, Chinnery typically transforms them into lossless digital formats, then adds each recording with key details: the time, location, and the story behind it. All recordings are original recordings, with no artificial sound effects added. When visitors enter the museum, the spatial sound system creates an immersive atmosphere via multi-channel audio, allowing them to fully engage with surround sound. They can also activate specific sound pieces by pressing buttons, touching screens, or simply walking through specific areas. For younger generations, these sounds offer a fresh perspective, helping them connect with the city’s overlooked cultural roots.
“These sounds function as the background hum of our society, so we often take them for granted,” Chinnery explained. “Yet when we display them in an exhibition, people suddenly recognize their profound significance. They are part of culture, history, and urban evolution, offering valuable insights into how society and times are shifting.” Today, his life and career are now closely bonded with the sounds of Beijing.
4. What is introduced about Chinnery in paragraph 1
A. The way to record different sounds. B. His inspiration to learn Chinese culture.
C. The origin of his beloved cause. D. His childhood memories of Beijing.
5. According to Chinnery, what makes Beijing’s traditional culture unique
A. It is well-preserved in local museums. B. It remains an integral part of daily life.
C. It reflects the city’s urban evolution. D. It has a longer history than Western culture.
6. How can visitors appreciate the sound recordings in the museum
A. By participating in interactive experiences. B. By reading the information on exhibit labels.
C. By using advanced sound editing tools. D. By learning about the recording process.
7. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. A Sound Artist That Refines Artificial Sounds B. Beijing Hutongs: A Culture-loaded Place
C. City Sounds Never Die: They Just Fade D. Trace Culture: City Sounds Live On

Chatbots can serve as personal shopping helpers for every consumer. They understand users’ needs, make a list of suitable products, and help people compare different choices. More and more often, shoppers can even complete their purchases directly through a chatbot.
AI companies believe their technology will greatly change shopping, just as online shopping did in the early days of the Internet. OpenAI has reached agreements with Shopify and Etsy, a platform for handmade products, allowing sellers to offer goods through its chatbot for a certain fee. Google is also trying to enter this emerging field of AI-powered shopping.
Retailers (零售商), however, are not sitting back. Many online shopping websites are indignant at the idea of AI bots standing between them and their customers. Amazon, the world’s largest online shopping platform, hopes to keep visitors on its own site and has prevented OpenAI from collecting its information. Meanwhile, some big stores including Walmart have created their own shopping chatbots. Studies show that American shoppers prefer these home-developed tools to third-party ones such as ChatGPT.
Julie Bornstein, founder of Daydream, an AI shopping tool for fashion, points out that chatbots are more useful for certain products than others. They work especially well when goods have clear and comparable details, such as cleaners whose weight and power are clearly listed. But for highly personal things like fashion, most chatbots are not good enough.
How enthusiastically consumers turn to AI for shopping may also depend on how much chatbot-makers embrace ads to make money. Google has reportedly told marketers that it will integrate ads into its Gemini chatbot next year. That could weaken the objectivity of these tools, and thus turn off shoppers.
As AI reshapes online shopping, physical stores gain renewed importance. With browsing shifting away from retailers’ and brands’ own websites, shops with striking displays and charming assistants will offer another way for companies to shape how they are perceived. Plenty of shoppers say that they value human interactions when shopping. They still want to touch and feel certain types of products, such as clothes. And at this time of year, heading to the high street offers a chance to enjoy the festive atmosphere.
8. What does the underlined word “indignant” in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Curious. B. Surprised. C. Annoyed. D. Confused.
9. What is a potential drawback of integrating ads into chatbots
A. Product recommendations may lack fairness. B. Chatbots may become less profitable.
C. Retailers may be forced to cut their prices. D. Shoppers may abandon physical stores.
10. What is the key focus of the last paragraph
A. The popularity of AI-operated physical stores. B. The decline of high street shopping districts.
C. The growing significance of offline retail. D. The necessity of maintaining brand image.
11. What is the text mainly about
A. Chatbots work better for certain products. B. Physical stores are regaining their importance.
C. Retailers fight against AI shopping services. D. AI is transforming the way people shop.
D
When spring arrives, keeping warm becomes less of an issue. However, scientists remind us it is not just a seasonal necessity — heat is also a valuable energy resource that can be stored. Researchers at Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) have discovered an innovative solution beneath our feet: using soil as an efficient thermal energy (热能) storage system.
KTU professor Dr Tadas dankus and his team have been investigating how the ground can serve as a medium for heat storage. At the core of their research is a ground-based heat accumulator that would store left energy underground and make it available when demand peaks.
At first, the team explored how to use wind energy to produce heat through a hydraulic system (液压系统). They discovered that hydraulic losses, which are usually considered a waste of energy, actually produced useful heat. However, part of heat was lost before reaching buildings. So the researchers wanted to find a way to not only reduce heat loss but also store the heat.
To test this idea, the researchers conducted experiments using an artificial heat source placed in top soil layers. They measured how heat spreads and stays in the ground. In one test, when the soil was heated to the boiling point, it caused a phase change (相变), in which liquid water becomes vapor (水蒸气). “Phase change can be an efficient way. We noticed a sharp temperature rise wherever the vapour flow reached. This means the energy is moving and can be controlled.” says Prof. dankus.
Once the possibility of underground heat storage was confirmed, researchers began exploring its practical applications. They developed a test model to study how heat spread through soil. The year-long measurements revealed the soil beneath buildings could passively store heat, making use of the natural downward flow of heat from buildings into the ground.
To put these ground-based storage systems into widespread use, researchers are now developing scaled-down test models and refining heat distribution control methods. “Our immediate goal is to integrate existing solutions into a system that can benefit both industrial and residential sectors.” dankus concludes.
12. What is the main goal of the KTU research project
A. To cut down winter heating costs. B. To collect heat directly from the soil.
C. To make the hydraulic system more efficient. D. To use soil to store heat for future use.
13. What can be inferred from paragraphs 3-4
A. Hydraulic losses can be avoided by heat transfer.
B. Phase change makes heat control possible.
C. Producing heat from wind energy is impossible.
D. Vapour flow contributes to big temperature drops.
14. What are researchers doing for the practical use of the systems
A. Building large heating systems for factories.
B. Reducing heat loss from buildings completely.
C. Applying the technology to residential sectors.
D. Developing test models with improved control.
15. Which of the following would be the suitable title for the text
A. From Wind to Warmth: an Unexpected Path
B. Future System: Uniting Industry and Home Heating
C. The Ground Beneath: A New Frontier in Heat Storage
D. A New Discovery: Turning Hydraulic Loss into Gain

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My name is Emma. I’ve always enjoyed taking things apart and figuring out how they work — from an old alarm clock to the family tablet. That curiosity led me to join our school’s Digital Design Club. In our first session, our club leader, Mr. Roberts, told us that coding is not just about typing commands. It’s about using technology to solve everyday problems for real people.
“Here’s your mission,” he announced one morning. “Create a simple app that addresses a common difficulty in daily life.” He gave us two weeks to complete the task, hoping we would observe carefully and find genuine needs.
The assignment stayed with me as I visited my elderly neighbor, Mrs. Clark, after school. She often invited me for cookies on Thursdays. Mrs. Clark was warm and friendly, but she had grown increasingly forgetful. More than once, she had left her front door unlocked or forgotten to turn off the stove after cooking. That afternoon, as we sat drinking tea, she suddenly frowned.
“Emma, dear, did I take my afternoon pill I can’t quite remember.”
I gently helped her check her pillbox — it was still full for today. She sighed with relief but also a little embarrassment. Later, she mentioned her weekly gardening club. “Last week, Mr. Lee forgot his gloves, and Mrs. Garcia left her watering can behind. We try to help each other, but sometimes I wish something could simply remind us. Water the plants. Call the doctor. Wednesday for gardening.” She shook her head gently.
Her words struck me deeply. Just then, an idea began to take shape in my mind. As I stood up to leave, I gave her a knowing smile. “Give me about ten days, and I’ll bring you a little helper.” “Oh dear, I’ll try my hardest not to forget that promise,” she laughed.

【答案】范文
That evening, I sat down at my desk with a notebook, my mind filled with ideas. Inspired by Mrs. Clark’s trouble with forgetfulness, I decided to create a user-friendly reminder app for elderly people. I listed their daily needs, like taking medicine on time, doing housework and preparing for social activities. I spent hours learning basic coding skills, adjusting the interface with large buttons and clear words to make it easy to operate. I kept testing and improving the app day by day. Though the process was tiring and full of challenges, I never gave up, eager to fulfill my promise to the kind neighbor.
When the deadline arrived, I presented my project to Mr. Roberts. He was impressed by my thoughtful design and practical function, speaking highly of my creativity. Later, I installed the app on Mrs. Clark’s phone. She was delighted and said it was exactly what she needed. This experience taught me that technology is more than cold codes. It can connect people, deliver care and solve real-life problems with small but warm creations.
