A year ago, I decided to spend a year studying in Germany — an experience that turned out to be unforgettable.
At first, leaving home and stepping out of my comfort zone felt overwhelming. I hardly knew any German, and everything around me felt unfamiliar. Simple tasks like buying groceries or ordering food became daily challenges. Fortunately, I stayed with a host family I already knew, which eased my transition and gave me emotional comfort early on. Their patience and warmth made those difficult first weeks much more bearable.
Even so, daily life came with constant challenges. From figuring out bus routes to learning how to recycle, I had to stay observant, ask questions, and accept mistakes as part of the process. There were moments of frustration when I misunderstood instructions or got lost on unfamiliar streets. It took time, but I gradually found my footing and began to move with the rhythm of everyday life. Small victories, like holding a full conversation in German, gave me confidence to keep going.
Beyond school, I got more involved in social events. One of the most memorable moments was New Year’s Eve. We had fondue, shared stories, and watched fireworks light up the sky. That night, surrounded by laughter and warmth, I didn’t feel like a guest — I truly felt at home. The experience gave me a deeper insight into how powerful human connection is, no matter the language or cultural differences.
Now that my year in Germany is over, I realize how much I’ve grown. It wasn’t just about learning another language or culture; it was about discovering new aspects of myself. From adapting to a different way of life and overcoming academic challenges to gaining a broader perspective, this year has shaped me into a more confident and open-minded person, ready for whatever comes next.
4. What helped the author settle down in Germany at first?
A. Learning German very well. B. Having a lot of money.
C. Joining in social events immediately. D. Staying with a familiar host family.
5. What does the underlined word “overwhelming” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Exciting. B. Confusing. C. Stressful. D. Boring.
6. What can we infer about the author from the New Year’s Eve experience?
A. He missed family members deeply.
B. He felt a sense of belonging in Germany.
C. He disliked the food in Germany.
D. He planned to stay in Germany forever.
7. What’s the author’s attitude towards difficulties in life?
A. Optimistic and adaptable. B. Positive and cautious.
C. Adaptable but passive. D. Optimistic but hesitant.

Travel is a right that should be enjoyed by everyone whether disabled or able bodied. A new initiative by European and North American airports helps reduce stress for travelers with invisible disabilities such as brain injuries, autism and so on.
London Gatwick Airport created the Sunflower lanyard (挂绳) program, which is now in over 200 airports globally. The purpose is to help people with invisible disabilities have confidence to travel independently, knowing that they will receive the support that they may need at every stage of their journey. From checking in to boarding the flight, on the flight and arriving at their destination. Quiet rooms, noise canceling headphones and assistance by airline staff are all part of the program.
It’s a misconception that people living with a disability don’t want to or can’t travel. Globally one billion people live with some sort of disability and while some experience a disability that is visible, for many it is not visible.
In an unnoticeable way, the lanyards let airport and airline staff know certain travelers may need more attention, patience, extra help or information repeated. By wearing or holding the lanyard, passengers will be able to signal to staff that they may need additional help while checking in, going through security or many other travel activities.
Since 2016 when the Sunflower was launched, thousands of businesses across a wide range of trades have joined the global Sunflower network — it isn’t just limited to airports either, with railway networks and coach and bus services included. Education, health care, central and local government agencies use the Sunflower as well.
Only 17 percent of people with a disability were born with it. For many that disability is not visible and develops at some point in their life. It’s the largest minority group in the world, and it’s one that any of us can join at any time.
8. What’s the aim of Sunflower lanyard program?
A. It helps to build confidence for disabled people. B. It provides a privilege for the disabled.
C. It aims to help all disabled people. D. It helps hidden-disabled people travel alone.
9. What is a mistaken view about disabled people according to paragraph 3?
A. They are unable to travel. B. They enjoy traveling alone.
C. They completely depend on others. D. They dare not ask for help when traveling.
10. How can airport staff realize disabled passengers need extra help?
A. By receiving text messages. B. By recognizing the Sunflower lanyards.
C. By telling passengers’ body language. D. By checking passengers’ ID cards.
11. What’s paragraph 5 mainly about?
A. The future of the program. B. The problems with the program.
C. The development of the program. D. The suggestions from the program.
D
A new study has found a close connection between mental health and the stomach, a part of the body seldom studied in research on the relationship between the central nervous system and the digestive tract. Both the stomach and the brain have small electrical waves moving through them all the time, and the more they work in the same rhythm, the more likely someone is to feel mentally uncomfortable.
The study was carried out by researchers from Aarhus University in Denmark and the German Institute of Human Nutrition. They hope that we can discover certain mental health problems more correctly and earlier by checking stomach signals. They collected full brain and stomach scan data, together with mental health questionnaires from 199 people, and studied the information carefully to look for important connections.
Stronger rhythm connection between brain waves and stomach waves is linked to a higher risk of mental health problems such as worry, sadness and pressure. Weaker connection usually means people enjoy better mental health. The present information does not prove stomach activity directly causes mental illness or the other way around, and we still don’t know why such connections exist. Still, this relationship may be helpful with more research in the future. It is based on the gut’s nerve system, which is connected to the brain through the vagus nerve. Earlier studies have connected this “second brain” to several brain-related illnesses.
It is often difficult to diagnose mental health problems correctly. Different problems may look similar, and some can be easily overlooked or misjudged. Many people also find it hard to realize and describe their own mental conditions. So having more clear signs to make correct judgments will be very useful.
In the future, we may even use stomach rhythm to reduce the symptoms of mental health problems, but this still requires a long time of further study. Right now, researchers plan to collect more data from larger and more different groups to test if their findings can be proven again.
12. What may cause a higher risk of mental discomfort according to the study?
A. Weaker link between brain and stomach waves. B. Stronger agreement of brain and stomach waves.
C. More active brain regions in daily tasks. D. Poor physical health of the stomach.
13. What can we know about mental health diagnosis now?
A. Usual easy and correct practice. B. Failure to spot some problems timely.
C. Total dependence on stomach signals. D. Lack of effective official methods at present.
14. What will researchers probably do next?
A. Treat mental patients with stomach rhythm at once.
B. Give up studying the stomach-brain connection.
C. Prove stomach problems directly cause mental illness.
D. Conduct more research with larger group.
15. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Methods of Keeping Our Stomach Healthy B. A Study Linking Stomach and Mental Health
C. Correct Diagnosis of Mental Health D. The Importance of Mental Health Care
