My uncle George, a mentally disabled man, enjoys a simple life-no smartphones, no Internet - so communication is limited to in person or old-style phone calls.
I have always shared a special bond with him. For years, George would periodically ask for my cellphone number and write it down. He’d call a bunch of times and then suddenly stop, because he had lost the piece of paper with my number on it. This went on for years, until at some point, around six years ago, he committed my number to memory. Ever since then, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., he calls me once a day, without fail, 365 days a year.
Our phone calls always follow the same structure, using one of three fantasy realities from George’s imagination. In one, he’s my dad and I’m his son. In another, he’s Major Charles Winchester, and I’m Captain B. J. Hunnicutt, reporting for duty. In the last, we’re both lifeguards, performing the rescue of a drowning person. We go back and forth in character for about a minute and a half, only breaking the bit to laugh wildly. Then he’ll go quiet. “You know something, Tommy,” he’ll say. “I’m just calling to say you’re the best guy I know.”
“So are you,” I reply. We both laugh. Then, he’ll ask what I’m eating for dinner and wrap up telling me he’ll call back at a specific time.
This conversation has been repeated for years. No matter what’s going on in the world, these calls are something I can count on. In my darkest moments — painful breakups, professional setbacks — that phone call rolls in, allowing me to escape reality for a bit and just laugh and act like a kid again. Though he can’t understand my adult life or daily struggles, his love remains unshakable. This love is an incredible gift. Whenever I’m struggling for life, I know George will call, telling me I’m the best guy through his phone calls.
4. What can we know about George
A. He is a life guide just like me. B. He tries to keep in touch with me.
C. He is a physically disabled man. D. He wants an advanced smartphone.
5. Why does the author value George’s calls
A. They provide practical advice B. They help improve his acting skills.
C. They keep him updated on family news. D. They offer consistent emotional support.
6. What does the underlined phrase “wrap up” mean in Paragraph 5
A. End up. B. Bring up. C. Show up. D. Pick up.
7. What does the passage intend to tell us
A. Role-play bonds family. B. Family love is unshakable.
C. Calls make a difference. D. Disabled people brave all.

Glaciers store amounts of important climate data within their frozen rivers of snow and ice. But many of the world’s 220,000 glaciers are under threat from global warming, melting(融化) at an alarming rate.
In 2024, a UN research team went to harvest ice cores (核) from the glacier in the Alps. They wanted to add to test cores drilled just two years earlier, which showed clear chemical evidence of past climate. But when they got there, the glacier had melted so much that information trapped in the ice was lost. And this is a process happening in glaciers worldwide. Evidence showed melt rates were more than 30%higher between 2020 and 2024 than 15 years earlier.
Records show that almost all of the world’s glaciers are thinning out. Among the fastest melting glaciers are those in the Alps, but half the world’s glacial loss is from the US and Canada, and that ice core data could be lost forever. And the oldest continuous ice records are up to 130,000 years in Greenland and 800,000 years inAntarctica, where ice cores more than two miles in length have been taken out.
What those cores reveal are changing levels of greenhouse gases like CO2 over the last 400,000 years and clues to global warming. But it is not just atmospheric make- up or events like volcanic eruptions that are recorded in ice cores. Scientists have found viruses nearly 15,000 years old in samples (样本) from a Tibetan glacier.Genetic codes for 33 viruses, 28 of them unknown to science, were discovered, and researchers hope to find out more about how viruses have advanced and how they might respond to climate change.
Measures are being taken to preserve this type of data and increase our understanding of Earth’s climate and environment. Perhaps ice- covered areas of theAlps and the Andes will disappear by the end of this century. But probably the most threatening signals of glacial loss come from places like Greenland and Antarctica, where ice melt raises global sea levels.
8. Why did a UN research team go to the Alps in 2024
A. To put back cores drilled years earlier. B. To trap scientific information in the ice.
C. To remove evidence of past climate. D. To collect ice cores from the glacier.
9. What does the underlined phrase “thinning out” mean
A. Of poor quality. B. Growing much closer.
C. Less in amount. D. Having more layers.
10. What does paragraph 4 focus on
A. Scientific data in ice cores. B. Main cause of global warming.
C. Changing levels of greenhouses. D. Plenty of samples of viruses.
11. Which places probably show the most alarming signs of glacier loss
A. The Alps and the US. B. The Andes and Canada.
C. Greenland and Antarctica. D. Tibetan and the Alps.

For years, we’ve been teaching a class on music and the mind. At the start of each semester, we asked the students to complete a survey on their favorite songs and artists. Students’ favorite songs and artists get longer and more varied each year and their playlists barely overlap (重叠).
Indeed, listening to music is a deeply private and personal experience nowadays and even more so with the introduction of the iPhone and smartphones. When teenagers listen to music via streaming, artificial intelligence and social media platforms team up to suggest personalized playlists for them.
Some young people feel that AI generated playlists make them exposed to something uninteresting. Their playlists are populated with songs and artists they’ve never heard of before, yet they all sound similar. In the past, they might not have noticed such a situation. Their musical consumption was dominated (占主导) by the“Top-40” artists. However, AI generated playlists have changed this, since a wider range of music is available.
Furthermore, if they think their AI influenced playlists are unappealing, they still have the ability to search for new music just because AI doesn’t prevent them researching and discovering music on their own. Anything that exists, they can find. The store is always open.
As young people transition (过渡) from childhood to adulthood with various styles of music, two seemingly opposing processes become essential — forming a unique identity while becoming part of a community. Music listening and preferences play an important role in it and AI generated playlists may have the potential to challenge this transition.
Fears of new technologies are common. For example, the decline of scheduled network TV erased lots of common ground for discussion. Will 50 million Americans ever again watch the series ending of a TV show, as they did for Friends in 2004 And will AI make it easier to differentiate the self, but harder to bond with others
12. What do we know about students’ favorite playlists from the survey
A. They are becoming more and more similar. B. They have little in common with each other.
C. They are mainly made up of Top-40 songs. D. They are designed by their music teachers.
13. Why do some young people dislike AI generated playlists
A. The playlists are not updated in time. B. The music in the playlists is hard to find.
C. The music in the playlists sounds alike. D. The playlists lack personalized elements.
14. Which may the author agree with regarding young people’s transition to adulthood
A. Listening to music has little effect on social bonding.
B. Young people should avoid using AI generated playlists.
C. Music preferences stop the development of personal identity.
D. Forming a unique identity and joining a community are both vital.
15. Why does the author mention the TV series Friends in the text
A. To stress the power of traditional media. B. To introduce a popular TV show to readers.
C. To show the potential social influence of AI. D. To compare the current expression with past ones.

I used to wake up and check my phone. Before my feet hit the floor, I was already deep in the day’s chaos: headlines, comments, breaking news alerts. Doomscrolling (刷屏成瘾) had become my morning routine. ____16____ I started each day tense and anxious. So I gave myself a quiet dare: no phone in the morning, for five straight weekdays.
Naturally, breaking the habit wasn’t easy. The first morning, I reached for my phone automatically. I stopped myself and picked up a book instead. It felt odd, like trying to enjoy coffee without caffeine (咖啡因). But after a few pages, I found myself actually relaxed — not the emptiness of a scroll, but something steadier. ____17____ That had never happened before.
Encouraged by the quiet start, I explored other ways. The next day I tried a cold shower. I wanted something that would force me fully awake. The shock factor was incredibly effective. ____18____ On Wednesday, I went for a run. I hated every step at first. But I came back awake, warm and proud. That feeling powered me through the day.
____19____ On Thursday, I journaled. No audience, just thoughts on paper. It felt honest, if not particularly exciting. On Friday, I reread an old letter and let the memories surface. It was quiet, uneventful and grounding.
By the end of the week, the urge to check my phone had weakened. ____20____ Those phone-free mornings proved a quieter start was possible: no noise or half-truths. It’s not about perfection, but freedom from the scroll and the misinformation it feeds into our minds.

D. It made me realize my dependence on my phone.

The midterm group project was supposed to bring our four-person team closer, but it ended up tearing me and Lily apart. We’d been good friends since freshman year, sharing snacks in class and studying together late at night. When our professor assigned the history research project, we volunteered to lead the data collection and analysis — tasks we’d split equally before.
Everything started smoothly until the third week. Lily missed two group meetings in a row, and the work she promised to finish remained untouched. I grew frustrated, assuming she was slacking off (懈怠). During our next meeting, I shouted at her in front of the other two teammates. “Can’t you take this seriously We’re all working hard except you!” Lily’s eyes filled with tears, but she didn’t defend herself — she just ran out of the classroom.
The following days were awkward. We avoided each other in hallways, and our group project didn’t make any progress without our coordination. My other teammates tried to mediate, but I was too stubborn to listen, convinced Lily was in the wrong. One evening, as I sorted through research materials alone in the library, our class monitor Sarah sat beside me. “You know Lily’s mom has been in the hospital, right She’s been taking care of her after school and hasn’t slept well for weeks,” Sarah said gently. “She didn’t want to burden anyone, so she kept it to herself.” She then added, “I wonder whether your team members can share the burden of looking after her mother.”
Shock washed over me. I thought back to how tired Lily had looked lately, with dark circles under her eyes and her usual bright smile gone. I’d been so focused on the project deadline and my own annoyance that I failed to notice her struggle. Guilt weighed heavily on my chest — I’d judged her without asking for the truth, and hurt a friend who was already going through a tough time. Eventually, I decided to make things right.

Let’s Protect Our Beautiful Campus
I’m Li Hua, editor of the school newspaper’s English column. Recently, I’ve noticed some students littering on campus. Empty bottles, paper, and food bags can be seen everywhere.
A clean campus helps us stay healthy and focus on our studies. It also shows we care about our school and each other.
Let’s take action! Please don’t throw rubbish on the ground. Pick it up if you see it, and encourage others to do the same. Remember: a beautiful school starts with small actions — and with you!
【答案】
Inspired by Sarah’s words, I went to the other teammates. I told them the truth about Lily’s mother being in the hospital and how she’d been struggling to balance caregiving and the project alone. To my relief, they all responded with immediate empathy and offered to help. “A trouble shared is a trouble halved. We can share the burden with her,” one teammate suggested. Everyone else echoed. We soon worked out a schedule — I assisted with the data sorting and analysis, and we all took turns to look after Lily’s mom after school.
The next day, I found Lily sitting alone at the dining hall, looking worried. With guilt, I walked over and sat quietly opposite her. I said sincerely, “Lily, I shouldn’t have shouted at you without knowing the truth. We all know about your mom now, and we want to help.” I continued to tell her our plan. Tears welled up in Lily’s eyes. “Thank you,” she whispered. We hugged tightly, and the awkwardness between us melted away. We finally completed the project with cooperation, and more importantly, our friendship grew stronger through mutual understanding and support.
