Every Saturday morning, I wake up early before my alarm rings. The house is quiet, and my husband is still asleep. I make a cup of coffee and sit in my favorite chair with my phone. It is time to call my parents in Beijing.
Sometimes we talk through video, and sometimes it is only a voice call. I have kept this routine for 18 years while living in Canada, France, and now the US. Many things have changed over the years — where I live and how we communicate — but the reason for the call has stayed the same: I need to know they are okay.
Our conversations are usually about ordinary things. We talk about the weather, the news, their blood pressure, and the food they have eaten. They tell me about relatives, neighbors, and daily life. I share stories about my work, my trips, and the books I have read. The talks may seem simple, but they mean a lot to all of us.
I call my parents separately, and the conversations are different. My father likes to think deeply and often gives gentle advice. He is also interested in new technology such as smart watches and AI tools. My mother, on the other hand, is always concerned about me. She asks whether I am eating well or getting enough sleep. When I ask about her health, she always says everything is fine, even when my father has told me something different.
Over time, I have learned to listen carefully not only to their words but also to their voices. A small pause or a change in tone can reveal feelings they do not say directly.
I return to Beijing once a year to see them. The joy of meeting them is great, but saying goodbye is always difficult. As my parents grow older, I sometimes feel sad that I cannot help them in person. Anyway, though these weekly calls cannot remove the distance, they help keep our family closely connected, one ordinary conversation at a time.
4. What can we infer about the writer’s weekly calls
A. They are a long-time habit. B. The reasons for them are various.
C. They are often short and formal. D. They started after moving abroad.
5. Why does the writer keep calling her parents every week
A. To ask for life advice. B. To check they are well.
C. To avoid feeling lonely. D. To solve family problems.
6. What does the writer learn from listening carefully to her parents
A. Their daily schedules. B. Their hidden feelings.
C. Their plans for the future. D. Their opinions on family life.
7. What does the writer mainly want to show in the last paragraph
A. Time together is very short. B. Visits matter more than calls.
C. Distance weakens family love. D. Ordinary chats deepen family ties.

Tea has always brought comfort to people on Earth. Now, scientists are asking a new question: Could we grow tea on the Moon A recent study by the University of Kent suggests that tea plants might actually survive in lunar soil. This offers hope for future astronauts who will live and work on the Moon.
Working with tea experts and space groups, researchers planted young tea bushes in soil made to look like the Moon’s surface. They carefully controlled light, temperature, and water. Another group of plants grew in normal Earth soil for comparison. Surprisingly, after several weeks, the tea plants in the “moon soil” grew just as well as those on Earth. However, plants in soil made to look like Mars did not grow at all. Students measured root length, leaf health, and soil conditions, suggesting that lunar ground may be less hostile than expected.
The idea began when a space scientist heard about farming research. He worked with tea farmers to provide plants for the test. While the main goal is to help space travel, the findings could also help farmers on Earth. Many places today face poor soil because of climate change and over-farming. Learning how plants survive in hard, low-nutrient conditions might lead to new ways to protect crops here at home.
Professor Nigel Mason explained that as humans plan to build bases on the Moon, knowing what people can eat is very important. Growing tea in lunar greenhouses could give settlers fresh food and a taste of home.
He added that the team’s next step is to learn exactly how the plants manage to grow in these extreme conditions. This knowledge could then be used to help other crops grow, both in space and back on our planet. It seems that the idea of a quiet tea break could one day be a small but important part of life on the moon.
8. What did the study by the University of Kent find
A. Tea plants grew better in moon soil. B. Tea plants cannot grow in moon soil.
C. Mars soil is better for growing plants. D. Moon soil can support tea plant growth.
9. What does the underlined word “hostile” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Unfavorable for growth. B. Similar to the soil on Mars.
C. Full of enemies and attacks. D. Angry and ready to fight back.
10. What is the main purpose of growing tea in moon-like soil
A. To test if tea tastes better in space. B. To compare with plants in Mars soil.
C. To help future astronauts live on the moon. D. To find new ways to grow tea plants on Earth.
11. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. Astronauts prefer tea to other drinks in space.
B. Growing food on the moon is still impossible.
C. Tea breaks will soon be common on the moon.
D. Scientists will study how plants survive in tough soil.

China’s annual Spring Festival Gala is as popular as the US Super Bowl. This year, it surprised people around the world. During the Lunar New Year show, human-like robots performed difficult martial arts (武术) moves. The stunts were so amazing that some viewers online asked if the video was real. However, major news groups have confirmed that it was not fake (假的).
Four Chinese robot companies — Unitree, Galbot, Noetix, and MagicLab — showed their latest technology. In one act, more than ten Unitree robots worked with child actors. They did flips, fight scenes, and waved swords and sticks skillfully. Just a year ago, these robots could only do simple dances. Now, their fast progress shows what people call “China speed.” Other robots joined humans in a funny sketch or danced together to music.
Experts say this success comes from better computer programs. These programs act like a robot “brain” to control movement. This quick growth is part of China’s plan to lead in robotics. Last year, China made 90% of all human-like robots sold worldwide. Sales are expected to double again in 2026. Even Elon Musk, the head of Tesla, admits that Chinese companies are his biggest competitors.
However, the rise of robots also brings important questions. Dr. Ramesh Srinivasan, an AI expert, warns that robots could change our jobs, armies, and personal lives. He asks whether we truly want robots to become our coworkers, soldiers, or even friends. While some people joke about stopping robots with chat programs, others worry about the future of human work.
The show proves that technology is moving fast. As robots become more common, society must decide how to use them wisely. The goal should be to build a future where technology helps humans live better, rather than replacing them. After all, feeling safe and connected matters most.
12. What surprised people during this year’s Spring Festival Gala
A. The robots danced with children. B. The robots performed martial arts.
C. The robots sang songs with pop stars. D. The show was confirmed to be a fake video.
13. What does “China speed” in paragraph 2 refer to
A. Fast economic growth in China. B. Quick changes in Chinese culture.
C. Rapid progress in robot technology. D. The speed of Chinese high-speed trains.
14. What does Dr. Ramesh Srinivasan worry about
A. Robots cannot be controlled. B. Robots will become too smart.
C. Robots may replace human jobs. D. Robots will become too expensive.
15. What is the best title for the text
A. Kung fu Robots Shock the World B. The Secret Behind Human-like Robots
C. The Future of Human-Robot Friendship D. Robots Take Over the Spring Festival Gala

Humans may have begun taming(驯养) animals and growing small crops as early as 10,000 years ago. However, many early people were nomads who moved from place to place. ____16____ They hunted, fished, and gathered nuts, berries, and roots. Life was hard and uncertain.
Over time, people began to keep animals in herds. ____17____ They built homes and started farming the land around them. Growing crops provided a more reliable food supply than hunting and gathering. As a result, small settlements grew into villages, towns, and eventually cities.
Farmers also discovered that planting certain crops together was helpful. Native Americans, for example, planted beans, corn, and squash together. ____18____ People also realized that rotating crops — changing what is grown on the same land each year — helps keep the soil healthy. Sometimes, farmers leave fields empty for a while to give the land a rest.
The Industrial Revolution, about 200 years ago, brought major changes to farming. Before this, people used hand tools and animals to farm. ____19____ Because fewer workers were needed on farms, many people moved to cities to find jobs.
____20____ In the mid-1900s, scientists developed new types of wheat and rice that produced much more food. This was called the Green Revolution. Today, much of our food is grown on large farms, often owned by big companies. These farms use irrigation and chemicals to increase production. However, since the early 2000s, organic farming has become more popular.
A. Modern farming continues to change.
B. New machines made farming easier and faster.
C. They found their food in the wild as they traveled.
D. This led them to stay in one place for longer periods.
E. However, early farming methods often destroyed the soil very quickly.
F. Farmers often shared tools and seeds with their neighbors in early villages.
G. This method brought them better results than growing each crop separately.

Today was the big day-the final of our school’s talent show. The school hall was full of excitement. Students gathered around the stage, talking and laughing. Bright lights shone above, and music played softly in the background. Everyone was looking forward to the performances.
I was standing behind the stage, waiting for my turn. My act was a piano performance. Although I had practiced for several weeks, I still felt very nervous.
My best friend Kevin noticed my worried face. “Relax,” he said with a smile. “You’ve practiced so much. Just enjoy the music.” I tried to smile back, but my heart was beating quickly. I kept thinking about what might go wrong. What if I forgot the notes What if I played badly
Soon the show began. One by one, the contestants gave wonderful performances. A group of dancers performed an energetic dance. Then a boy showed several amazing magic tricks that surprised everyone. The audience cheered loudly after each act.
Listening to the applause made me even more nervous. Finally, a teacher walked onto the stage and announced my name.
My legs suddenly felt heavy as I walked toward the piano. The bright lights made it hard to see the audience clearly. I sat down and placed my fingers on the keys. For a moment, the hall became very quiet.
I took a deep breath and began to play. At first, my fingers trembled slightly. But slowly, the music began to flow. The familiar melody helped me relax, and my hands moved more smoothly. Everything seemed to be going well. However, when I reached the middle part of the piece, something unexpected happened. Suddenly, my mind went blank. I couldn’t remember the next notes.
The music stopped. The whole hall became silent. I sat there, staring at the piano keys, not knowing what to do.

【答案】Dear Noah,
I’m so glad to hear from you. You asked about my after-school life, and I’d like to share a special experience I had last weekend.
Last Saturday, our class organized a volunteer activity at a local nursing home. Upon arrival, we were divided into groups. Some cleaned the windows and swept the yard, while others, including me, chatted with the elderly and taught them how to use smartphones to video call their families. We also put on a small singing performance for them. The room was filled with laughter and warmth.
Personally, I felt extremely fulfilled. Not only did I learn the importance of caring for others, but I also realized that a small act of kindness can bring great joy. It was tiring but truly worthwhile.
How about your after-school life Looking forward to your reply.
Best regards,
Li Hua
【答案】One possible version:
Just then, I noticed Kevin in the audience. He was standing up, looking straight at me with a warm and encouraging smile. He didn’t say a word, but he gently tapped his chest and then pointed to my heart, as if telling me, “Believe in yourself.” His quiet support gave me sudden courage. I closed my eyes for a second, took a deep breath, and suddenly remembered the rhythm of the music. The music returned, soft at first, then growing stronger and more confident. When I played the final note, the hall erupted into loud cheers. I stood up, bowed to the audience, and felt a great sense of relief.
After all the performances ended, the results were announced. I didn’t win first prize. Although I felt a little disappointed at first, Kevin hugged me and said, “You were amazing up there! Everyone loved your performance.” Looking at the happy faces in the crowd and seeing my friends clap for me, I realized something important. Winning was not everything. The true reward was overcoming my fear and sharing my music with others. That night, I walked home with a light heart, proud of what I had achieved.
