We put limitations on ourselves when the fear of failure grows stronger than our will to succeed. That’s why we all need a push to help us reach further than we ever thought possible.
That is the purpose of NubAbility Athletics Foundation, a nonprofit organization aimed to get “limb (肢体) different” youth — kids who are amputees (被截肢者) — “out of the stands, off the bench, and into mainstream sports.” The organization holds camps around the country, pairing kids and coaches with similar limb differences to help them reach their full physical potential.
Tim, who was born without arms, certainly didn’t believe he could pull off a 20-inch box jump before he joined. This month, the 14-year-old participated in the weight-lifting and training program at a camp and achieved something amazing.
In a video on the Internet, we see Tim’s coach teaching him to jump onto a box. With no arm strength, it seems like a tough task. While Tim pushes through his self-doubt and jumps, he still holds back on his first two tries and doesn’t stick the landing.
Then, the coach pats her hands onto the box, yelling, “All the people who told you you can’t — right here, jump on them. Now!” This time, Tim puts all his energy into the jump. Still, it isn’t enough to make it all the way onto the box. Understandably, Tim grows frustrated and turns away as if to give up. But he’s not done yet. Tim turns back to the box with a look of pure determination, bends his knees… and launches himself onto the box!
As his coaches cheer him on, the victorious teen jumps down and straights into his motivator’s arms, overwhelmed with emotion at what he just achieved. That day, Tim learned he is capable of so much more than he knew.
Tim is living proof that we can all achieve greatness, no matter our limitations. All we have to do is keep trying. Never give up, and never let the word “can’t” hold you back!
4. What is the mission of NubAbility Athletics Foundation?
A. To pick out excellent young sportsmen.
B. To develop the full potential of the disabled.
C. To hold camps for the amputees in the world.
D. To encourage teenage amputees to get involved in sports.
5. What might Tim initially look like in the video?
A. He lacked confidence. B. He was full of energy.
C. He was very excited. D. He was shy and ashamed.
6. Which word can best describe the coach’s words?
A. Scary. B. Funny. C. Encouraging. D. Threatening.
7. What message can we get from Tim’s success?
A. Life has no limitations. B. It is never too late to learn.
C. A good beginning is half done. D. It is no use crying over spilled milk.

Americans eat more than 3 million tons of chocolate each year, enjoying the unique taste that only the beans of the cacao (可可) plant can provide. To make the taste delicious as a sweet treat, chocolate makers combine cacao beans with lots of sugar. Together with saturated fatty acids (饱和脂肪酸) provided by the addition of cacao butter from the fruit, the few health benefits provided by the chocolate bean are outweighed by ingredients (成分) that increase the risk of illness.
To address this imbalance, a team of researchers from ETH Zürich in Switzerland has gone back to the basics and reinvented the chocolate ingredients from the ground up. They’ve exchanged some of the sugar with a part of the cacao fruit that’s usually thrown away.
By separating and drying the fiber-rich (富含纤维的) inside wall of the fruit — or endocarp — and combining it with juice from the soft inside part of the fruit that covers the cacao beans, the researchers found they could make something sweet to exchange the sugar commonly added to chocolate ingredients. Not only did the resulting chocolate have higher fiber content than traditional blocks, but it also provided equal sweetness without the same level of sugar usage.
As an added bonus, parts of the fruit usually thrown away as waste could be kept and marketed, allowing cacao farmers to make more money.
Changing a new product developed in a laboratory into a marketable product requires the clearing away of numerous difficulties, not least of which is the basic infrastructure (基础设施). “Although we’ve shown that our chocolate is attractive and has a comparable mouth-feel to traditional chocolate, the whole creation process will need to be adapted, starting with the cacao farmers, who will require drying machines,” says the study’s lead author Kim Mishra.
Yet now that the whole-fruit chocolate has proven itself, there is good reason to believe that this low-sugar, high-fiber option will be sold in supermarkets in the near future.
8. Why did the researchers reinvent chocolate ingredients?
A. To reduce the cost of chocolate production.
B. To increase the cacao bean content in chocolate.
C. To reduce health risks related to eating chocolate.
D. To increase the natural sweetness of cacao beans.
9. What is good about the new chocolate with endocarp compared to traditional one?
A. It tastes sweeter. B. It is more shapeable.
C. It provides more fiber. D. It is more like fruit in smell.
10. What does the underlined word “bonus” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Treat. B. Option. C. Reason. D. Benefit.
11. What is the author’s attitude toward the future of the new chocolate?
A. Hopeful. B. Unclear. C. Carefree. D. Doubtful.

Nurse Rod Salaysay works with all kinds of instruments in the hospital. In the recovery unit of UC San Diego Health, Salaysay helps patients manage pain after surgery. Along with medications, he offers tunes on request and sometimes sings. Patients often smile or nod along. Salaysay even sees changes in their vital signs like lower heart rate and blood pressure, and some may request fewer painkillers. Salaysay is a one-man band, but he’s not alone. Over the past two decades, live performances and recorded music have flowed into hospitals and doctors’ offices as research grows on how songs can help ease pain.
The idea of using recorded music to lessen pain associated with dental surgery began in the late 19th century before local anesthetics (麻醉药) were available. Today researchers are studying what conditions make music most effective.
Researchers at Erasmus University Rotterdam in the Netherlands conducted a study on 548 participants to see how listening to five genres of music—classical, rock, pop, urban and electronic — extended their ability to tolerate acute pain, as measured by exposure to very cold temperatures.
“The more people listened to a favorite genre, the more they could tolerate pain,” said co-author Dr. Emy van der Valk Bouman. “A lot of people thought that classical music would help them more. Actually, we are finding more evidence that what’s best is just the music you like.”
The exact reasons are still unclear, but it may be because familiar songs activate more memories and emotions, she said. The simple act of choosing is itself powerful, said Claire Howlin, director of the Music and Health Psychology Lab at Trinity College Dublin, who co-authored a study that suggested allowing patients to select songs improved their pain tolerance. “It’s one thing that people can have control over if they have a chronic condition — it gives them agency,” she said.
Hanley, the Florida State psychologist, co-authored a preliminary study suggesting daily attentive listening might reduce chronic (慢性的) pain. “Music has a way of lighting up different parts of the brain,” he said, “so you’re giving people this positive emotional bump that takes their mind away from the pain.” It’s a simple prescription (处方) with no side effects, some doctors now say.
12. How does the author lead to the topic of the text?
A. By citing historical records.
B. By using a real-life example.
C. By sharing professional opinions.
D. By quoting a famous proverb.
13. What is most effective in pain tolerance according to the Erasmus University study?
A. Classical music. B. Electronic music.
C. The genre the listener prefers. D. Rock music.
14. Which statement will Hanley most probably agree with?
A. Families choose music for patients.
B. Casual listening lessens chronic pain.
C. Focused listening may alleviate pain.
D. Inspiration al songs cheer patients up.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. The History of Music Therapy
B. The Differences among Music Genres
C. Nurse Salaysay’s Singing Career
D. How Music Helps Patients Manage Pain

Trust helps relationships grow, but it doesn’t come equally easily to everyone. ___16___ Instead, it is shaped by our experiences, our personality, and the way we have been treated in the past. That’s why people may trust in different ways.
Trust sits at the heart of daily life. When you take a taxi, you trust the driver to get you home safely. When you pay a worker to fix something, you trust him to do the job well. Typically, at school or work, you trust people to keep promises and respect basic rules. ___17___ Without trust, many everyday activities would feel risky.
However, once trust is broken, rebuilding it can be hard. When we meet someone new, we naturally pay closer attention to the setting and the person’s behaviour. We carry earlier lessons with us, too: many of us were taught as children not to talk to strangers. ___18___ This protective instinct naturally carries over into our everyday social life.
___19___ Sometimes we get a “feeling” about whether someone is safe to rely on. Yet a first impression is not the same as a final judgement. If we’ve been burned before, we may question our ability to read people and situations. We may then hold back even when someone means well.
The good news is that trust can be developed. Start by knowing your values and setting clear boundaries. Take your time, communicate worries honestly, and let trust grow through small actions. ___20___ If emotional pain is deep, professional help may be needed.
A. The same goes for first impressions.
B. It is more than a dictionary meaning.
C. That habit can shape our first judgement of others.
D. People may respond very differently to the same event.
E. Over time, these steps can help build trust more steadily.
F. Consequently, it is easy to stay cautious until we see the full picture.
G. We even trust strangers when we travel to and from school or work.

Sandro was born and grew up in Milan. Until he was 13 years old, he never wanted to leave his hometown. But last year, Sandro’s father’s investment went bad, wiping out the family and sending his parents to prison. As a teenager under 16 years old, Sandro was forced to go to Newcastle in the northeast of England to stay with his uncle Lawrence.
Sandro had a lot of difficulties in the new environment. He didn’t like the food in England. Nobody could forecast the weather in Newcastle. He had to start learning the second foreign language in his new school. Pocket money was not enough as usual. Almost every subject was a challenge for him. Most importantly, he had no friends. It seemed nobody knew him and he knew nobody in the school.
On an early summer evening, when Sandro was going home alone from school as usual, a man called him from behind. Sandro turned around and saw Eddie, his PE teacher, standing in front of him.
“You know, the school will have a swimming competition next month. There will be all kinds of races. Will you participate?” Eddie asked.
Sandro took a look at Eddie with doubt and answered, “You sure? Me? No. I won’t. I can swim, but I’m slower than a snail.”
Eddie smiled and then said, “Yes. Indeed. You are, in breaststroke(蛙泳), in backstroke, and in butterfly, but not in freestyle. So join the freestyle race! 200-meter freestyle is the game suitable for you.”
Sandro was speechless at that moment. He had never known someone in the school was observing him and caring for him.
“I don’t think I can win anything,” Sandro was still a little puzzled.
“But you may get more recognition and consequently you can make some friends. That is more important than prizes,” Eddie responded immediately.
Having hesitated for a while, Sandro agreed to have a try.

【答案】How to Live a Low-Carbon Life
Living a low-carbon life is crucial in the face of global environmental challenges. It helps combat climate change and preserves our planet for future generations.
We can take various steps. For daily travel, prefer walking, cycling or public transport over driving. At home, conserve energy by switching off unused appliances and using energy-efficient ones. In terms of consumption, reduce waste by recycling and avoiding single-use items. For example, carry a reusable water bottle instead of buying bottled water.
By adopting these simple yet effective habits, we can all play a part in living a low-carbon life and making the world a better place.
【答案】One possible version:
Every afternoon for the next month, Sandro trained really hard. Starting position, starting dive, turning, pushing off, touching the timing pad, all details, he practiced them over and over. Whenever he was exhausted, Eddie’s words echoed in his mind and supplied extra energy to him. “Maybe I can’t be the champion of the game, but I can be the champion for myself.” He spoke in a low mumble to himself after he finished the last training. Finally, the day of competition arrived. With the sound of the starting gun piercing through the air, the race began as expected.
Sandro dived into the pool confidently like other competitors. He swam as freely as a fish. 150 meters covered, he was left behind by 2 competitors. In the last 50 meters, Sandro swam magnificently, with his arms pushing forward fast, his legs hitting the water hard. Finally, the championship was still out of his reach. When the result was announced that Sandro won third place, however, other players congratulated him, the audience in the stadium bursting into thunderous applause. As teacher Eddie said, he won the recognition and respect from others with his effort.
