Beaches tend to be a warm weather affair, but that doesn’t mean they’re any less beautiful in winter. Ready to find your perfect winter beach vacation spot? Here’s where Americans love heading when the temperatures drop.
San Clemente, CA
San Clemente is a winter bird hideaway thanks to its views, trails, and marine life. Winter is the prime time to spot migrating gray whales. It’s also a great time to avoid the high summer heat while exploring trails along the dramatic cliffs and wandering down the one-mile beach. RVers and campers are also welcome, as San Clemente has a highly rated campground right on the beach.
The Golden Isles, GA
Along with those moody beach days, visitors to the Golden Isles can also soak up unique celebrations and festivals during the cooler months. That includes a two-month-long treasure hunt on Jekyll Island, along with the Holly Jolly Jekyll light parade and the Brunswick Christmas Parade. If you like to travel with Fido, head to the Golden Isles — during fall and winter, dogs are allowed back on the beaches!
Key West, FL
Located right on the border with the tropics, Key West doesn’t necessarily slow down for winter. Still, you can find sunshine adventures across the Keys, from Higgs Beach to Bahia Honda State Park. While the water is definitely cooler, you can still dive underwater into a breathtaking coral (珊瑚) paradise and swim to play with the fish throughout the coldest winter months in many parts of the Keys.
Perdido Key, FL
Perdido Key is an unspoiled island that’s often labeled a hidden jewel on the Gulf Coast. It’s a protected island where you can spot sea turtles, shorebirds, and the Perdido Key beach mouse. If you want a more outdoorsy experience, you can take tours of Perdido Key State Park and even camp at the Perdido Key RV Resort & Marina.
21. What can visitors probably do in San Clemente, CA?
A. Join a one-mile treasure hunt. B. Go snorkeling in cool water.
C. Watch gray whales’ migration. D. Camp at a marine themed resort.
22. Which one is most suitable for divers?
A. Key West, FL. B. The Golden Isles, GA.
C. San Clemente, CA. D. Perdido Key, FL.
23. What is the main purpose of the passage?

My uncle George, a mentally disabled man, enjoys a simple life-no smartphones, no Internet - so communication is limited to in person or old-style phone calls.
I have always shared a special bond with him. For years, George would periodically ask for my cellphone number and write it down. He’d call a bunch of times and then suddenly stop, because he had lost the piece of paper with my number on it. This went on for years, until at some point, around six years ago, he committed my number to memory. Ever since then, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., he calls me once a day, without fail, 365 days a year.
Our phone calls always follow the same structure, using one of three fantasy realities from George’s imagination. In one, he’s my dad and I’m his son. In another, he’s Major Charles Winchester, and I’m Captain B. J. Hunnicutt, reporting for duty. In the last, we’re both lifeguards, performing the rescue of a drowning person. We go back and forth in character for about a minute and a half, only breaking the bit to laugh wildly. Then he’ll go quiet. “You know something, Tommy,” he’ll say. “I’m just calling to say you’re the best guy I know.”
“So are you,” I reply. We both laugh. Then, he’ll ask what I’m eating for dinner and wrap up telling me he’ll call back at a specific time.
This conversation has been repeated for years. No matter what’s going on in the world, these calls are something I can count on. In my darkest moments — painful breakups, professional setbacks — that phone call rolls in, allowing me to escape reality for a bit and just laugh and act like a kid again. Though he can’t understand my adult life or daily struggles, his love remains unshakable. This love is an incredible gift. Whenever I’m struggling for life, I know George will call, telling me I’m the best guy through his phone calls.
24. What can we know about George?
A. He is a life guide just like me. B. He tries to keep in touch with me.
C. He is a physically disabled man. D. He wants an advanced smartphone.
25. Why does the author value George’s calls?
A. They provide practical advice B. They help improve his acting skills.
C. They keep him updated on family news. D. They offer consistent emotional support.
26. What does the underlined phrase “wrap up” mean in Paragraph 5?
A. End up. B. Bring up. C. Show up. D. Pick up.
27. What does the passage intend to tell us?
A. Role-play bonds family. B. Family love is unshakable.
C. Calls make a difference. D. Disabled people brave all.

China’s space technology team has made an important breakthrough in combining AI and space technology. The self developed geographic information platform MerakGIS, created by the Hangzhou Center of China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, has built a new intelligent system for space-air information processing. This system has caught wide attention from experts and people in the industry since it was released last month.
This platform creatively combines large language models with agent technology, shifting the traditional “human-computer interaction” mode to a more effective “human-machine cooperation” one. Users can simply input their questions or requirements, and the system intelligently explains complicated satellite pictures, combines diverse spatial (空间的) datasets, and does advanced studies. Now, users can complete satellite image interpretation, space data combining, and smart checking directly by using natural language instructions. This makes it much easier for non-experts to use. Even people with little technical training can use it easily and quickly.
To improve independent innovation, the team has worked together with Zhejiang University and Zhejiang Laboratory on technical research and achievement transformation. They have spent nearly two years solving key problems and testing the system again and again. Their continuous efforts focused on solving the problems of data working well together and making the AI algorithms (算法) better. At present, MerakGIS has been successfully used in the new energy field, providing stable spatial data services and management support for more than 1, 000 solar power stations across the country. It has helped these stations improve their work efficiency by about 30%.
This achievement combines high-precision “aerospace core” with intelligent “AI brain”, expanding the use of space-air information in strategic emerging industries and showing aerospace technology’s value in serving national economy and people’s livelihood. The team says they will keep improving MerakGIS and hope to apply it in more fields like agriculture and environmental protection in the future.
28. What is the primary purpose of creating MerakGIS?
A. To develop new satellites. B. To promote AI technology.
C. To attract worldwide experts. D. To process space-air information.
29. Which is an innovation of the platform?
A. It relies on satellite image analysis. B. It cuts aerospace technology costs.
C. It operates through natural language. D. It replaces human workers entirely.
30. What can be inferred about the platform’s development?
A. It was finished within a month after being released.
B. It relied mainly on overseas labs for core technology.
C. It was tested once and applied immediately nationwide.
D. It took joint work to improve integration and algorithms.
31. Which of the following best describes the future of MerakGIS?
A. Uncertain. B. Profitable. C. Doubtful. D. Promising.
D
Second place is just the first loser. While the competitive spirit may be as natural as breathing air, it doesn’t always lead to human flourishing and can create misery. Fortunately, there is a formula to solve this problem: instead of always going for gold, shoot for the bronze.
Though second place may be the first loser, third place can be the real winner regarding happiness and longevity. In a 1995 study, scholars systematically coded the emotional reactions of silver and bronze medalists in the 1992 Summer Olympic Games. Using slow-motion footage captured both immediately after their events and later on the awards podium (领奖台), researchers found the bronze winners appeared consistently happier on average than the silver medalists. Over 80% of bronze medalists exhibited genuine smiles, a figure that was nearly double that observed among silver medalists. Moreover, every bronze medalist’s smile lasted longer than the average smile observed among the silver medalists.
More recent research has looked at the life span of all three medalist categories. A 2018 study tracked the average longevity of those representing the U.S. in the Olympic Games from 1904 to 1936 and found that the athlete whose best performance was silver lived to 72. Gold medalists beat this by four years, living to 76. But first prize in longevity went to the bronze medalists, who lived to 78.
The study had a handy explanation for this discrepancy: “Unsatisfactory competition outcomes may adversely affect health.” In other words, silver medalists see themselves as the first loser because they look up to the top step and compare themselves only with the gold medalists, whereas the bronze winners compare themselves favorably with all the others who never made it onto the podium at all. This theory shows the difference between upward and downward social comparison. When we compare ourselves with those who have more money, power, or achievements, we often feel like, well, losers. It tends to lower motivation and increase stress. In contrast, downward comparison makes people feel better about themselves and, thus, happier.
The worldly happiness strategy of striving for gold every day is foolish. It tends to lower the intrinsic motivation, and thus enjoyment that people obtain from their activities. The principle at work here is trying to improve your own past performance and the only person to whom you will have to compare yourself is you.
32. What can be learned from the 1995 study?
A. Silver medalists showed less happiness than bronze winners.
B. Silver medalists’ smiling frequency was close to that of gold medalists.
C. The average bronze medalist’s smile lasted longer than every silver medalist’s.
D. The emotions of both medalists were unchanged from the events to the podium.
33. What is the cause of the difference in medalists’ life span?
A. The stress from downward social comparison.
B. The motivation from upward social comparison.
C. The effect of different types of social comparison.
D. The failure to look up to the top after the competition.
34. What does the writer advise us to do to achieve happiness?
A. Learn from the top performers. B. Try to be the best in every field.
C. Commit to one’s consistent personal growth. D. Strengthen the motivation to obtain achievement.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. The Triumph of Coming in Third B. The Problem of Human Competition
C. The Mechanism of Social Comparison D. The Psychology of the Olympic Medalists

Nellie and I had been best friends since birth, our birthdays just days apart. Every year, we’d throw a combined birthday party, and seventh grade felt extra special — our moms finally agreed we could invite our classmates. We settled on a “Discover the Pyramids” theme, spending weeks crafting hieroglyphic (象形文字的) decorations and planning mummy wrap contests.
As we wrote names on the invitation list, my mom leaned over my shoulder. “What about John?” she asked softly. John had transferred to our class a few months earlier, his math and science grades far outshining everyone else. But he was a quiet loner, never joining group activities, and he wore the same pair of brown corduroy (灯芯绒的) pants to school every single day. “Mom, he can’t even afford a costume,” I frowned, a surge of guilt welling up in me. My family wasn’t wealthy, but my mom was a master at bargain hunting — I’d never had to repeat an outfit. Mom’s brows wrinkled as she walked away to answer her office phone.
The next afternoon, Nellie and I were cutting gold paper into pyramid shapes when Mom handed me an envelope. Inside was a gift certificate to our favorite department store, enough to buy several new outfits. “Nellie’s mom and I thought you two could give this to John,” she said before heading back to work. Nellie and I stared at the certificate in awe.
“We can’t just hand it to him — that’d shame him,” Nellie said firmly. I nodded, thinking of how John would shrink into himself if we openly offered charity. We talked over ideas — slipping it into his desk, asking the teacher to pass it along — but none felt right. Just as I was about to suggest another plan, Nellie’s eyes lit up. “I’ve got an idea,” she said, snatching the envelope and bouncing on her heels.

【答案】She giggled and whispered in my ears, “Let’s have a grand prize game.” We immediately started brainstorming, deciding to design a math puzzle—John’s strongest subject. We drafted a problem about calculating pyramid volumes, then ran to ask Mom to check if it was fair but challenging. Mom nodded approvingly, praising our thoughtfulness. The party night was bustling with laughter; everyone danced and played games joyfully. Just as the party hit its peak, I climbed onto a chair. “Time for the grand prize game!” Nellie, next to me, held up a problem sheet and read out the math puzzle.
John’s hand shot up before anyone else, his answer precise and quick. The crowd cheered—no one was surprised he’d nailed it. I bounced to him and congratulated him with the envelope. His eyes widened as he opened it, and a bright grin spread across his face when he saw the gift certificate. “Thank you!” he said excitedly. The next Monday, we spotted John striding into the school gate in a neat new shirt and dark jeans, a bright smile lifting at the corner of his mouth. Nellie and I exchanged a knowing glance, our hearts warm with the secret we’d guarded so carefully. We felt proud of our little trick—kindness, we realized, is best when wrapped in respect.
