I was on a much-needed walk outside Boston’s Symphony Hall. It had been weeks since I last called home. Surrounded by unfamiliar routines and strangers, I felt like a background character in someone else’s city. I needed a moment to breathe. That was when I saw her standing alone at the crosswalk, scanning the street.
As I crossed the street, our eyes locked. She looked at me with such directness that I reflexively smiled and waved. “Hi, I don’t speak Mandarin, but how can I help ” I asked the older Chinese woman. She showed me a picture on her phone: the Trader Joe’s grocery store. I performed my best impression of a mime (哑剧) trying to give directions. Confused, she showed me the picture again.
“OK, I’ll take you there myself,” I said, gesturing for her to come along. Walking down Massachusetts Avenue, she said “xiè xie” every few moments. I pulled out Google Translate on my phone: “Thank you,” said the app. I’m not sure why I was taking a stranger grocery shopping. Maybe she reminded me of my Filipino family I left behind in California. Maybe it was simply that I knew I could help.
When we arrived at the store, I asked her whether she needed anything else. She scrolled to a second screenshot, this time of sourdough bread, and turned her phone toward me with an expectant look. I laughed and nodded. As we entered, she raised her eyebrows as though I was her nephew and this was our weekly walk for groceries. The cashier looked between us. “Are you two related ” I nodded. Easier that way. My new auntie handed me a bag with a single loaf inside. I refused, but she insisted-pressing the bag into my hands until I accepted. The cashier, watching this exchange, smiled and let the 10-cent bag fee slide.
Saying goodbye felt bittersweet. We never exchanged names or contact information. All I had to remember her by was that loaf of bread-a small gift that felt like something much bigger.
4. What can be inferred about the author’s life in Boston
A. He led a boring and stressful life.

D. He felt out of place in his surroundings.
5. How did the author succeed in talking with the woman
A. By teaching her English.
B. By using digital devices.
C. By exchanging the pictures.
D. By asking for a cashier’s help.
6. Why did the author tell the cashier they were relatives
A. To win trust from the woman.
B. To get a discount on the bread.
C. To avoid a detailed explanation.
D. To make the cashier impressive.
7. What does the bread symbolize in the story
A. A comfort in times of loneliness.
B. A sign of overcoming life difficulties.
C. A lifelong promise between strangers.
D. A reminder of the author’s homesickness.

Thomas has an engaging view from his Amsterdam flat. His street is lined with imposing 17th-Century canal houses-but what he sees each day is distinctly modern. Day after day, tourists form long queues (队伍) on the bridge, holding up ?5.50 box of fries against the backdrop for online posts. Fabel Friet is the place to get fries in Amsterdam. The brand opened its first shop in 2020 and blew up on TikTok in 2023; ever since, its original location has drawn constant lines. A few meters away, a Korean sandwich shop has similar queues.
Amsterdam is far from the only city where people are waiting for mouth-watering food. New York’s L’Industrie draws hour-long queues for a slice of pizza. Getting a salt beef bagel (贝果) at London institution Beigel Bake is a test in loyalty and patience, while Fukuoka’s I’m Donut trend has gone global.
Across the world, travelers are now willing to wait an hour or more for trendy takes. But psychologists say that these lines aren’t really about the food at all; they reveal how social media, status and performance are reshaping modern travel.
A queue doesn’t just signal popularity; it has a powerful psychological influence. The fear of missing out (FOMO) is the strongest explanation for why people wait for food they’ve only heard about. For positive experiences, when people see other people in line for something, it makes the “thing” people are queuing up for seem more desirable and elicits FOMO.
Whether we realize it or not, waiting in line for trending food is all part of a broader performance. People aren’t just eating the viral food — they’re filming themselves doing it, with their subsequent posts indicating that they’re onto something special. Viral dishes spread across social media before the travelers arrive, and millions watch others try them on camera.
And because so much of this performance now happens online, the places people visit aren’t discovered through wandering; they’re delivered by algorithms (算 法). That changes not just how travelers behave, but where they go in the first place.
8. What is the first paragraph mainly about
A. The development of local food shops.
B. The historical attractions of Amsterdam.
C. The popularity of viral food with tourists.
D. The effect of social media on old buildings.
9. Why does the author mention examples of other cities
A. To prove the trend’s global spread.
B. To show the variety of local food.
C. To present ways of attracting tourists.
D. To compare various eating preferences.
10. What does the underlined word“elicits” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Relies on. B. Sticks with. C. Turns to. D. Brings about.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Influences of Tourists on Local Life B. Why Travelers Queue for Viral Food
C. One Psychological Secret in Social Media D. What Makes Local Food Popular Worldwide
D
When Bulwal Bilima (BB) first arrived at Taronga Zoo in Sydney, Australia, she, or possibly he, was very tired and dehydrated (脱水的). Named“strong turtle” in the language of the Yuin people on whose land it was found, the tiny 110g baby turtle, no bigger than a bar of soap, had a fight on its hands.
The baby turtle was found stranded (搁浅的) last April, much further south than the usual hatching grounds. After days of feeding on squid, sardines and marine vitamins, BB, whose sex cannot be determined until it is fully mature, recovered. Then last month, it was finally fitted with a satellite tracker and released from Lord Howe Island.
For conservationists, the rescue was about more than saving the life of one turtle. It was a fresh warning that warming seas are forcing species into new territories.
The East Australian Current is strengthening and pushing warmer waters further south. Marine species once largely confined to Queensland, including endangered loggerhead turtles, are now turning up much further south in New South Wales — in places they have rarely been recorded before.
Phoebe Meagher, a conservation officer who works on Taronga’s turtle tagging project, says their southward shift raises urgent conservation concerns.
Often called guards of climate change, turtles are highly sensitive to environmental shifts. Sand temperature determines hatching sex: cooler sand produces males, hotter sand, females. As turtles move south, mismatches between ocean and sand temperatures could affect sex distribution or reduce survival. Intensifying currents may also alter habitat suitability, increase disease risk and push turtles closer to people — worsening uncertainty for already threatened species.
BB is one of about 21 turtles tracked by Taronga conservationists along the New South Wales coast. For Herrin, who has rescued and released many turtles, the most powerful moments in the process remain the simplest. “When they swim away and they don’t look back, we know we’ve done OK, so that’s the best thanks that we can get,” she says.
12. What can we learn about BB
A. It was weak when discovered.
B. Its gender is already confirmed.
C. It was spotted in its usual home.
D. Its name was given by local people.
13. What caused BB to appear far south
A. The cooler seawater. B. The stronger current. C. Less natural enemies. D. More hatching grounds.
14. What will environmental changes bring to turtles
A. Increase in survival rate. B. Suitable space for living.
C. Intimate relation with humankind. D. Unbalanced proportion of sexes.
15. What is the main idea of the text
A. Marine species move to new territories.
B. Turtles are sensitive to temperature changes.
C. A rescued turtle signals risks out of climate change.
D. Extinct species are protected with satellite trackers.

Lila, a mother who had a passionate love for dancing, shared this hobby with her little daughter Mia. Just like her mother, Mia was also fond of dancing, and the two were more like close friends than mother and daughter. They spent most of their spare time together dancing to cheerful music. Their days were always filled with laughter and warm moments.
One day, an announcement was posted all around their small town. A special parent-child dance competition would be held next month, and it soon became the hottest topic among the townspeople. As soon as Lila saw the notice, her eyes lit up instantly, and she grew extremely excited about this rare chance to dance on stage with her daughter Mia.
When Mia came home from school that afternoon, she rushed straight to her beloved pet parrot as usual, completely absorbed in playing with the lovely bird. She was so busy with her little bird that she hardly paid any attention to her mother standing beside her. Lila walked up to her gently and asked with a bright smile, “Honey, would you like to take part in the parent-child dance competition with me ”
Too engaged in her interaction with the parrot, Mia just let out a casual“hmm” without lifting her head or even thinking twice about the question. Lila, however, was overjoyed and took this absent-minded reply as a definite agreement, never doubting that her daughter shared the same excitement for the competition.
The two practiced dancing every day as usual. They both enjoyed the daily practice a lot, laughing and perfecting their moves together as time passed by. As the competition drew near, Lila laid out two beautiful matching dresses prepared for the competition on the bed. At the sight of the dresses, Mia looked confused and asked, “Mom, what are these beautiful dresses for ”

Lessons from My Failure
Last semester, I joined a school English speech contest, which turned out to be a memorable experience. Nervous and unconfident, I forgot my prepared lines halfway on the stage, with my cheeks turning red instantly. Never had I felt so embarrassed in public before that moment. I rushed off the stage as I finished the speech, heart sinking with heavy disappointment.
My teacher and friends kept encouraging me after the failure. They gave me a lot of advice on adjusting my mood and improving my speech until I had the courage to step on the stage again.
This experience brought me far more growth than any easy success. I came to realize that it’s diligent preparation and steady confidence that matter most for any challenge.
【答案】One possible version:
Lila suddenly sensed there was a misunderstanding. Cheerful excitement fading, she leaned over to look Mia in the eyes, softly saying, “Honey, don’t you remember You agreed to take part in the parent-child dance competition with me a few weeks ago.” Mia blinked in pure confusion and shook her head gently, saying she knew nothing of the competition and that she was afraid of dancing in public. Smile froze on Lila’s face at once. Lila’s heart sank a little, but she tried her best to hide her disappointment and began encouraging Mia to attend the competition. With Mom’s encouragement and the true love for dancing, Mia agreed at last.
The competition officially started as scheduled. Nervous as they both were, love for dance drove away their fear. With hands locked tightly, they stepped onto the bright stage slowly. Stage lights shone on their lovely matching dresses. They danced to the familiar tune they had practiced for long. Every move was smooth and full of true family warmth. Their soft performance won thunderous and lasting applause from the crowd. They ranked first and got a prize for their joint hard work. Such sweet family warmth made this misunderstanding a fruitful memory.
