When I was young, I loved paper cutting and I was pretty good at it. As I grew up, I became busy and didn’t have much time for it. Later, I stopped doing it.
However, the news I came across online touched my heart and changed my mind. A little girl from Jieyang, Guangdong was practicing lion dance when a professional lion dance performance team (专业舞狮表演队) passed by. As soon as they saw the girl practicing, they started to beat drums and gongs for her and quickly she did a lion dance in return. People around all cheered for her. Her love for the ancient Chinese culture evoked my strong memories of paper cutting.
I remembered the happy times of making paper cuttings with my teacher and friends in the club. When I was ten, I joined the paper cutting club. Every Monday and Friday, I learned to make paper cuttings there. Our teacher, Ms. Li, was very talented. With a pair of scissors and a piece of paper, she could create lively works (作品). That amazed us. And we learned much from her. Together, we created lots of works. They covered many topics, including animals, flowers and things about Chinese history. Every time we held a paper cutting show, our works attracted many visitors. The girl in the news encouraged me to go on with paper cutting. I want to be an inheritor (继承者) of the ancient Chinese culture. Together with other inheritors, I hope to pass down our excellent culture.

It’s important for children to take part in social activities during their summer holidays. “Kids should have a break during the summer. They’ve worked hard during the school year and this is their time to relax, but they should continue communicating with their friends and meeting new people,” said Dr. Jin Han. He’s a professor at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.
Spending time with friends and meeting new people by doing fun and educational activities such as music, arts and sports programs in summer help with their development. “If children spend a lot of time alone on their electronic equipment (电子设备), then they will fail to communicate with others,” Han said. “In today’s world, it’s very easy for kids to stay indoors all day and keep in touch with others, but that is not a good way to connect with others. Face-to-face communication is necessary and important. Parents should set limits (限制) on how long their children use electronic equipment.”
It’s also important for children to spend quality time with their parents and sisters or brothers. “It’s not so much the length of time, but the quality of time, that families spend together that is really valuable,” Han said. “This type of communication is not something that you can get from anywhere else. It doesn’t matter how old the child is, family bonding (家庭关系) experiences can happen at any time.”
Having children spend time with friends and families doesn’t have to spend money in the wallet, either. For example, going to the neighborhood swimming pool or having a picnic is a great way to spend quality time together.
8. What does Dr. Jin Han think about the summer holidays according to the first paragraph

B. The longer children spend with families, the better is for them.

11. What is the main idea of the text
A. The importance of friends and families.
B. The introduction of some social activities.
C. The suitable way to spend summer holidays.
D. The necessity of face-to-face communication.

Short-form video content has become more and more popular in recent years, with many platforms (平台) having a key influence. These short videos, usually from a few seconds to a few minutes in length, have caught the attention of millions of users all over the world. However, as our time spent on short-form video content continues to rise, it is important to understand its influence on our attention span.
Short-form video content is designed to catch attention quickly and provide information or entertainment in a short and easy manner. While this can do good in some cases, it can also lead to a phenomenon known as “continuous partial attention”. Continuous partial attention is the state of repeatedly dividing one’s attention among several tasks. When watching short-form videos, people are often taking part in other forms of media or distractions (分心的事物) on their devices like computers or smart phones at the same time, such as checking information on social media platforms. This too-often switching of attention can lead to a decrease in focus and concentration, finally impacting our ability to retain information and engage in deep thinking.
A study found that people who watched short videos were less likely to remember the information compared to those who watched longer videos or took other forms of learning. The researchers thought that the limited length of short-form videos may not provide enough time for the brain to process and store information into long-term memory. This suggests that while short-form videos can be a useful tool for getting to know new concepts at the beginning, it may not be as effective for deep learning and remembering.
To decrease the negative effects of short-form videos on attention span, platforms that consider quality more important than quantity should be developed. By providing content that is meaningful and interesting and that makes people think seriously, these platforms can encourage users to engage in more focused and intentional use of short-form video content. Additionally, individuals can take active steps to manage their own short-form video consumption, such as setting time limits or engaging in activities that promote deep thinking and concentration.
12. What mainly causes the phenomenon “continuous partial attention”
A. Enjoying short-form videos of too many topics.
B. Watching only part of each video without finishing it.
C. Changing attention frequently to other tasks on the devices.
D. Viewing and listening at the same time while watching short-form videos.
13. What does the underlined word “retain” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Keep. B. Update. C. Recover. D. Process.
14. What can be done to reduce the harm of short-form videos on attention span
A. Turning to more long-form videos in daily life intentionally.
B. Preventing the application of short-form videos.
C. Setting limits on the length of short-form videos.
D. Promoting short-form videos encouraging deep thinking.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. The Popularity of Short-form Video Platforms.
B. Short-form Videos and their Influence on Attention Span.
C. How to Use Short-form Videos to Improve Learning Efficiency.
D. Short-form Videos and Continuous Partial Attention.

Last Sunday, my parents had to go to my grandma’s home because she was ill. They told me I had to look after my 6-year-old brother, Leo, for the whole day. I was 16, and it was the first time I had to take care of him alone. I thought it would be easy — just play with him and feed him some snacks. But I was wrong.
In the morning, Leo refused to brush his teeth and cried for a toy car that he left at grandma’s. I tried to calm him down, but he just cried louder. After I finally got him to brush his teeth, I found out I forgot to buy milk for his breakfast.
I had to run to the supermarket downstairs in a hurry, leaving Leo at home alone for five minutes. When I came back, I saw Leo sitting on the floor, drawing on the living room wall with a red marker!
I felt so angry and stressed that I shouted at him. Leo was scared by my voice, and he started crying again. I stood there, looking at the messy wall and the crying boy, and I didn’t know what to do. I thought to myself, How can I mess this up so badly My parents will be so disappointed in me.
Paragraph 1: I took a deep breath and got down on my knees to Leo’s level.

Good morning, everyone! My name is Li Hua. It’s my great honor to stand here and make a speech on Festivals and Celebrations.
Festivals are more than just holidays. They carry our history, show our values, and bring us the warmth of family reunion. When it comes to my favorite festival, it is definitely the Spring Festival. During this special time, families get reunited, enjoy a big dinner together, and children receive lucky money.
As festivals are so meaningful, we should treasure our traditional festivals and pass them down from generation to generation. After all, they are important to our culture and remind us of who we are.
Thank you for listening!
【答案】例文
Paragraph 1: I took a deep breath and got down on my knees to Leo’s level. I said sorry to him softly, “I shouldn’t shout at you, Leo. That was my fault.” He stopped crying a little and looked at me with his wet eyes. I told him if he helped me clean the wall, I would make his favorite fried eggs for breakfast and buy his favorite strawberry yogurt from the supermarket. He nodded his head and wiped his tears with his small hand. We got a wet cloth and cleaned the wall together. It took us an hour, but Leo never complained. When we finished, I made the breakfast for him, and he ate it up happily. I felt a warm feeling in my heart — taking care of him wasn’t that hard if I was patient.
Paragraph 2: When my parents came back home in the evening, the house was clean and tidy. Leo ran to them at once and told them how I took care of him all day, talking about the breakfast and the yogurt excitedly. My parents looked at me with surprise and pride. They hugged me and said, “We knew you could do it.” I told them about my mistakes and how I fixed them. That day, I not only learned how to look after Leo, but also understood how tired my parents are every day. This experience made me grow up a lot, teaching me to be a more patient and responsible person for my family.
