定义:表示过去某个时刻或某一时间段内正在进行或发生的动作,它常和表示过去某一时刻的时间状语连用。
— What was Kate doing at the time of the earthquake

—地震发生时凯特做什么?
—她正在做作业。
— What were your family doing when the typhoon hit
—My children and I were reading together.
—台风来袭时你们一家在做什么?
—我正和孩子阅读书。
构成:was/were+动词-ing形式
注: 当主语是第一人称单数形式或第三人称单数形式时,be动词用
was,其余人称用were。
e.g. —What were you doing at eight last night
—I was watching a football game.
—昨天晚上八点你在做什么?
—我在看一场足球赛。
常用的时间状语:at this / that time yesterday, at six yesterday morning, all night等。

基本句式:
句式 结构 例句
肯定句 主语+was/were +动词-ing形式+其他. Grace was watering flowers in the garden at that time yesterday.
昨天那个时候格雷丝正在花园里浇花。
否定句 主语+wasn’t/weren’t +动词-ing形式+其他. The Greens were not watching TV at 9:00 last night.
昨天晚上9点格林一家人没有看电视。

一般 疑问句 Was/Were+主语+动词-ing形式+其他 肯定回答:Yes, 主语+was/were. 否定回答:No, 主语+wasn’t/weren’t. —Were you reading a book at this time yesterday

—是的,我在看书。/不,我没在看书。

过去进行时
一般过去时
表示过去某个时刻或某一时间段内正在进行或发生的动作,强调动作正在进行。
表示过去发生的动作或存在的状态,强调动作已发生或已完成。
过去进行时与一般过去时的用法区别
when与while引导的时间状语从句
1. when的用法
(1) 指时间点,也可指时间段,其从句的谓语动词既可以是延续性的,也可以是非延续性的。
e.g.You can walk across the street when traffic lights are green.
当交通灯是绿色的时候,你可以过马路。
(2) 引导的从句的谓语动作既可与主句谓语动作同时发生,也可以是之前或之后发生。
e.g.I was discussing a math problem with Joe when Mike called me up.
迈克给我打电话时,我正在跟乔讨论一道数学题。
(3) 若主句是一般将来时,从句用一般现在时表示将来。
e.g. I’ll call you when I arrive in Shanghai.
我到了上海会给你打电话。
2. while的用法
(1) 指时间段,其从句的谓语动词必须是延续性的。
e.g.Love your parents while they are alive. Don’t wait until it is too late.
请在你的父母健在的时候爱他们,不要等到一切都太迟了。
(2) 强调主句动作发生时,从句动作正在进行,常用while引导从句。主句常用一般过去时或一般现在时,从句常用进行时。
e.g. 当我正在河边钓鱼时,我看到附近有一条空船。

(3) 强调主、从句动作同时进行,常用while引导从句,此时主从句常用进行时。
e.g. 康康在上音乐课的时候,Darren在爬山。
Darren was climbing a mountain while Kangkang was having a music
lesson.
