Nowadays, various forms of technology and their applications have transformed our teenagers’ lives and our experiences as parents, most often not for the better. As the parent of a 10-year-old and a 14-year-old, I can say that not a week has gone by in nearly a decade that the use of such technologies hasn't led to some form of disagreement. And at this point it's clear that such is the experience of households all over the country. Endless elements of day-to-day life, including especially for young people learning and socialization, have been negatively impacted.
That's why I am drawn to Jonathan Haidt's work, The Amazing Generation. The first part includes background information on the rise of smartphones and the“attention economy”.It also has many infographics(信息图) and visuals, including one of my favorites,“ScreenTime Calculator That You Can Use to Shock People.”“1 hour per day=15 full days per year.2 hours per day=1 full month per year. Etc.” This is a page I woypen't mind seeing hung on classroom walls, including the college classrooms where I teach.
The second part is a fictional story about six young people. In one scene, heavy social media user Alex finally joins his phone-free friend Jax at a skate park. Then, we see Jax trying out different skating skills in the background, by the end falling onto the ground after another heroic attempt, which are in contrast to Alex s phone screen, which he has been glued to, from a nearby bench, first searching for skating tips then watching world championship skating highlights. The author ends by noting that while it is often thrilling to have the world at your fingertips, it's hard to deny the losses that accumulate when real life trial-and-error is replaced by passive viewing.
That's what The Amazing Generation can do—— get young people thinking more critically about the products that shape their everyday lives.
24. What can we learn about the author's family from paragraph 1
A. They look down upon each other's learning ability.
B. Arguments constantly occur over the use of technology.
C. Disagreement mostly happens between the two children.
D. They envy the harmonious relationship in other households.
25. What is Screen Time Calculator about
A. The key to learning math.
B. The value of teenagers' time.
C. The art of classroom management.
D. The amount of time spent on technology.
26. What does Jonathan Haidt intend to show by using the story of Jax and Alex
A. In-person experience matters a lot.
B. Training without guidance leads nowhere.
C. Too much screen time does harm to eyesight.
D. Champions’ experience is helpful for beginners.
27. Which of the following best describe The Amazing Generation
A. Plain and amusing. B. Boring and hard to understand.
C. Practical and educational. D. Imaginative and well-received.
C
From an early age, we' re taught the golden rule:“Treat others as you would like to be treated.” Sadly, many of us don't even treat ourselves that way. A 2023 study found that the average person has about 11 negative thoughts concerning their bodies and self-worth per day, suggesting that we could all need a course in the power of positive self-talk.
“Self-talk can be positive, negative, healthy, or critical,” says Willow McGinty, an expert in Florida.“Having positive self-talk means that the tone in which you speak to yourself is supportive and kind.” And, trust us —— and the experts —— this practice has real benefits.
Take Mondays: many people fear the start of the work week.“If tha self-talk sounds like,‘Tomorrow is going to be terrible,’ it will probably rise to meet that expectation,” McGinty says.“If the self-talk sounds like,‘Tomorrow is a fresh start and new opportunities to shine,’we are more likely to use to meet that expectation.” Research shows this confidence translates into physical feats too. A 2022 study found that strong performances in gymnasts could be predicted by positive self-talk, while negative self-talk was associated with poor outcomesEncouraging yourself before a workout may push you to run faster or lift heavier.
Positive self-talk is a muscle, and as with strengthening any other muscle, gains are made over time. McGinty points out that negative thoughts often come from core beliefs formed in childh od, like“I’ m not enough.” Challenging that belief is essential. She recommends journaling: identify the negative thought, label it, provide evidence to the contrary, and write a healthier version.
However, positive thinking can become harmful when it leaves no room for life's real struggles.“Some things are just awful and deserve to be seen as such,” says McGinty. The goal isn't to ignore hardship, but to keep self-criticism from standing in your way. As the poetHafez said,“The words we speak become the house we live in.”
28. What did the 2023 study find about people
A. They often have daily negative thoughts.
B. They treat others better than themselves.
C. They seldom care about their self-worth.
D. They need help from professional doctors.
29. What do the underlined words“physical feats” in paragraph 3 refer to
A. Economic gains B. Athletic achievements.
C. Improved physical health. D. Increased jo o opportunities.
30. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. Sports to strengthen muscles. B. Impacts of childhood memories.
C. Ways to identify positive self-talk. D. Advice on shifting negative thinking.
31. What can we learn from the words by Hafez
A. Self-criticism brings an end to hardship in life.
B. Positive thinking requires a comfortable home.
C. The way we speak to ourselves shapes our life.
D. Positive actions speak louder than negative words.
D
Plants that glow(发光) in the dark may sound like something from a science fiction movie. But scientists have already made plants that give off a greenish glow. Now, a group of Chinese researchers led by Shuting Liu, has gone further. They have created what they say are the first multicolored and brightest-ever glowing plants.
In the research, Liu and her team put a special material named strontium aluminate into the leaves of a plant called Echeveria“Mebina”. This material is often used in glow-in-the-dark toys.It takes in night and gradually releases it over time.
This method marks a departure from the traditional gene-editing technique. By putting nanoparticles(纳米颗粒) into the plant instead of editing its genes, the researchers were able to create plants that glow red, blue and green. Normally, limited by the plant's natural color, scientists can only create a green glow. To show the practical application of their idea, the team built a green wall of 56 plants. The plants gave off enough light for someone to see text, images, and a person up to 10 centimetres away Once the plants were put under direct sunlight for a few minutes, they continued te glow for up to two hours.“Plants can be recharged again and again by sunlight,” Liu said.
However, other scientists are not sure about the practical use.“I don't really see them as streetlights anytime soon,” said biochemist John Carr. Liu agreed the glow remains too weak for practical lighting. Additionally, the safety assessment of glowing particles for both plants and animals is still ongoing. For now, she said, they can serve as decorative night lights. However, Liu added,“Looking ahead, if we can address these issues, maybe glowing plants could softly light up gardens or public spaces at night.
32. Why did Shuting Liu's team put strontium aluminate into plant leaves
A. To change plants’ genes.
B. To stimulate plants’ growth.
C. To help plants store and release light.
D. To transform plants into a toy-like appearance.
33. What can we learn about the green wall of 56 plants
A. It gave off eolorful light. B. It was as bright as sunlight.
C. It took several hours to recharge. D. It won wide recognition of citizens.
34. What may Shuting Liu do at the next stage of research on glowing plants
A. Promote sales. B. Design decorations.
C. Choose suitable soil. D. Improve brightness.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Glowing Plants Bring a Pollution-free Planet
B. Glowing Plants Could One Day Light up Streets
C. We Should Adapt to Living with Glowing Plants
-D. We Are Encouraged to Grow More Glowing Plants

I had some puppies(小狗) to sell. I painted a sign advertising the puppies and set about nailing it to a post on the edge of my yard. As I was driving the last nail into the post, I felt someone pulling my clothes gently. I looked down into the eyes of a little boy named Jack.
“Sir,” he said,“I want to buy one of your puppies.”“Well,”I said, rubbing the sweat off the back of my neck,“raising a puppy takes a lot of time, energy and money. It's not easy to look after them well.” Jack dropped his head for a moment. Then reaching deep into his pocket, he pulled out a handful of change and held it up to me.“I' ve got 89 cents. Is that enough at least to take a look ”“Sure,” I said. And with that I let out a whistle.“Here, Dolly!” I called.
Out from the doghouse ran Dolly followed by four lovely little dogs. Jack pressed his face against the chain link fence. His eyes danced with delight. As the dogs made their way to the fence, Jack noticed something else moving inside the doghouse.
Slowly another small dog appeared, this one noticeably smaller. It walked down slowly. Then the little pup began walking slowly toward the others, doing its best to catch up.
“I want that one,” Jack said, quickly pointing to the small dog.
I knelt down at Jack's side and said,“Boy, you don't want that puppy. He will never be able to run and play with you like these other dogs would.”
With that Jack stepped back from the fence, reached down, and rolled up one leg of his trousers. He showed a steel brace(钢架) on his leg. Looking back up at me, he said,“You see, Sir.I don't run too well myself, and he will need someone who understands.”
