(Background)
Location: Located in Central Asia, between Kazakhstan to the north and Uzbekistan to the south.
Past glory: In the 1960s, it was the fourth largest lake in the world.
Current situation: Now, it has shrunk into just four smaller lakes.
(Satellite Images)

1.What is happening to the area according to the satellite images
2.What do you think a later satellite image would show
3. What do you think caused these changes
1.What is happening to the area according to the satellite images
The satellite images show that the Aral Sea is shrinking dramatically over time. From 1990 to 2010, the total water area has decreased significantly, and the once-large lake has split into several much smaller, disconnected bodies of water.
2.What do you think a later satellite image would show
If the trend continues, a later satellite image would likely show even smaller water bodies, possibly with some parts of the lake completely drying up. The remaining water might be more fragmented, and the exposed seabed could expand further.
3. What do you think caused these changes
The main causes are:
Overuse of water for irrigation: Large-scale irrigation projects, especially for cotton farming, diverted most of the water from the Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers that fed the Aral Sea.
Poor water management: Inefficient irrigation systems and lack of sustainable water policies led to massive water waste.
Climate change: Rising temperatures and changing rainfall patterns have also contributed to increased evaporation and reduced water inflow.

1. Read Para.1 quickly and fill in the blanks.
I am standing on Macquarie Island, in the South-west Pacific Ocean, halfway between Australia and Antarctica. Strong winds and stormy seas have helped sculpt its long, thin shape. The green grass and bare rock of its landscape contrast dramatically, giving it a wild and natural beauty. No visitor would think it surprising that the island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Nor would they fail to imagine how its native inhabitants, including royal penguins, king penguins, and elephant seals, existed in perfect harmony with their natural habitat for thousands of years.

No Plastic Water Bottles
Dear fellow students,
Our school is launching an activity “No Plastic Water Bottles”. Plastic water bottles cause pollution as they’re made from non-renewable resources and take ages to decompose. In addition, they often end up in the ocean, posing a serious threat to marine life.
Here are some suggestions. Bring reusable bottles and refill them at school. At school events, use other containers for water. Also, spread the message about the harm of plastic bottles via posters and class discussions.
Let’s act now for a greener school!
