Guide to Preparing for College
While there is no single academic path for all students to follow, we want to help you make choices that will lead you to a successful college career.
A well-rounded education
A good high school education should do more than prepare you for the next level of education or for later employment — it should prepare you to take advantage of future learning opportunities of all kinds. You should gain particular skills and information, as well as a broad perspective on the world and its possibilities.
Choosing high school courses
By taking the most academically demanding courses you can find, you can improve both your chance of admission to a selective college and your performance during the first years of college.
We recommend:
● The study of English for four years: extensive reading of the classics of the world’s literature
● Four years of a single foreign language
● The study of history for at least two years, and preferably three years
● The study of mathematics for four years*
● The study of science for four years: physics, chemistry, and biology, and preferably one of these at an advanced level
Various important secondary school subjects, such as art and music, are not specifically mentioned in our recommendations. Leaving out these subjects should not be interpreted as a value judgment. We are concerned only with secondary school subjects proven by data to support college coursework.
*Ideally, math courses should focus on conceptual understanding, promote higher-order thinking, and encourage students to use mathematical reasoning to critically examine the world. Examples include courses in computer science, statistics and its subfields, mathematical modeling, calculus, and other advanced math subjects.

2. What is the goal of the recommended four-year study of mathematics
A. To develop advanced thinking. B. To train problem-solving skills.
C. To boost mutual understanding. D. To use exam-taking techniques.

C. Admission officials. D. Course designers.

Jane Austen is a phenomenon. Her writings, and the houses, museums, and other locations linked to her life and work, open a window into the past. Today, adaptations, exhibitions, and new readings of her works bring us fresh ways to understand her, and more information about the late 18th and early 19th centuries — a period sometimes called the Austenian age.
Austen was born in 1775 in Hampshire. She lived there for 25 years, then moved to Bath, Southampton, and later Chawton. She also traveled to visit friends, relatives, and coastal places. Though not wealthy, her life was filled with books: she wrote stories, put on plays, and read aloud in the evenings. She received more education than her sister, Cassandra, as their father let her use his large book collection. In 1797, her father sent her work to a publisher, but it was turned down. Still, she kept writing. Her first novel, Sense and Sensibility, was published anonymously in 1811 under the name “By A Lady.” Later, Pride and Prejudice came out, and it sold out quickly. After she died in 1817, her brother Henry published her remaining works, saying her sense of humor was often ignored.
Austen left six finished novels, some unfinished works and letters. This “what if” — what she might have written next — is a key reason we’re so fascinated by her. One big mystery: she never married, even though marriage meant stability and happiness in her time. Only around 160 of her letters survive, so people try hard to learn about her inner life. They often remember her as cheerful, but her sister spoke of her sadness in later years.
Her popularity has lasted over 200 years, reaching across countries. There are many adaptations of her novels. Her works are not just romantic — they also show big changes of her age, like wars and the Industrial Revolution. These topics are still relevant today, which keeps her attraction strong. Now, 250 years after her birth, our interest in Jane Austen is as lively as ever.
4. What can we infer from paragraph 1 about Jane Austen
A. The “Austenian age” was shaped by her.
B. Her influence reaches beyond her books alone.
C. Her life is better understood through exhibitions.
D. Interpretations of her works offer a clear view of her time.
5. What does the underlined word “anonymously” probably mean in Paragraph 2
A. With support from her family. B. Using a well-known pen name.
C. Without showing her real name. D. Under the publisher’s direction.
6. What does the text reveal about Austen’s literary works
A. They reflected broad social changes. B. They gained widespread early fame.
C. They earned her considerable wealth. D. They illustrated her personal struggles.
7. How does the author present Jane Austen to the readers
A. By following a strict timeline. B. By comparing with other writers.
C. By citing experts’ academic reviews. D. By connecting facts with influence.

When you’re learning a new language, there are a lot of things to remember: spelling rules, grammar rules, punctuation rules… the list is endless. But there’s something that can help you: mnemonics [pronounced “nemonics”].
Mnemonics are techniques to help you remember things. There are a variety of them, including rhymes, spelling acronyms and sentence mnemonics.
Rhymes are a great way to remember things. The sounds, unusual words and rhythm of them help you recall ideas. Do you know when Columbus sailed to America There’s a rhyme to help you which goes like this, “In fourteen-hundred and ninety-two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue.” Most people who’ve heard that never forget it!
Spelling acronyms involve creating a sentence based on the letters of a target word. For example, the following sentence can help you with the spelling of the word “because”, “Big elephants can always understand small elephants”. Notice how the first letter of each word in the sentence spells out the word “because”. And if you can’t remember the spelling of the word “mnemonics”, use this one “Mike never eats meat or nuts in case he’s sick”!
Sentence mnemonics are also useful. The following can help you with the difference between the words “principal” and “principle”, “A principal is your pal at school, and a principle is a belief or rule.” Or this one to help you remember the difference in spelling between “deserts” (such as the Sahara) and “desserts” (such as Tiramisu), “A dessert has two sugars so it’s sweeter, but a desert only has one.” [The two “sugars” mentioned in the sentence refer to the two s’s in the word “dessert”.]
You can learn grammar rules with sentence mnemonics too. For example, this one can help you with the position of adjectives, “Adjectives come before nouns just as ‘A’ comes before ‘N’.” And this one can help you learn about the use of apostrophes (撇号), “Apostrophes show possession.”
Mnemonics can help a lot with language learning. Why not try inventing a few of your own!
8. What are mnemonics in the passage
A. Professional tool books. B. Specific language model.
C. Language learning strategies. D. Different language rules.
9. Why is the rhyme about Columbus mentioned in paragraph 3
A. To compare rhymes with other techniques.
B. To show how rhymes make facts memorable.
C. To prove that Columbus was a great explorer.
D. To explain the importance of historical events.
10. Which of the following is an example of a sentence mnemonic
A. “In 1066, the Normans did fix” rhymes the year of the Norman Conquest.
B. “George’s elderly old grandfather rode a pig home yesterday” helps spell “geography”.
C. “My very educated mother just served us noodles” helps remember the order of planets.
D. “A stationery store sells paper, while a stationary car doesn’t move” differentiates words.
11. Which of the following would the author probably agree with about inventing mnemonics
A. It requires special training. B. It does not take much time or effort.
C. It is something readers can try themselves. D. Language teachers should use it in class.
D
After spending 62 years above the Hudson River, the Tappan Zee Bridge’s heritage lives on below the water’s surface. The bridge was fully torn down, after which its huge chunks of metal and concrete were cleaned and then dropped into the Atlantic Ocean to start a new life as an artificial reef.
Coral reefs are varied marine ecosystems, often dubbed as the rainforests of the sea. When coral reefs are stressed by changes in conditions, such as temperature, light or nutrients, they expel the algae that live in their tissues, without which corals’ tissues become transparent, showing their white structures, a phenomenon known as bleaching. This largely attributes to the sharp decline of coral reefs. It is reported that we’ve lost 14 percent of the world’s coral reefs in the last decade, an equivalent of losing the whole Great Barrier Reef in 10 years.
It is clear that natural coral reefs are now in trouble. That’s why people are finding ways to build them from artificial materials. Artificial reefs aren’t made of coral. They are created by placing large objects on the ocean floor. Sometimes, these objects are built to be used as reefs. They are often made of steel and concrete. A structure can also be recycled as a reef. That’s what happened with the Tappan Zee Bridge. Of all the artificial marine reefs in the world, those made of submerged shipwrecks are the most common. In 2005, Jim Walsh helped turn a ship called the Carthaginian II into a reef, The Carthaginian II landed on the ocean floor more than a decade ago, Back then, it was just a chunk of metal on a bare patch of sand. Now the ship is a home to at least 75 marine animal species. “It’s amazing to see how much life is on that ship,” Walsh says.
While artificial reefs bring benefits in many ways, they aren’t perfect for all situations, as they can damage natural habitats if not carefully constructed and potentially lead to a sharp increase in tourism activity that spills over into surrounding areas, including natural reefs.
12. Which is closest in meaning to “expel” in paragraph 2
A. Capture. B. Absorb. C. Contain. D. Release.
13. What can we learn about the Carthaginian II
A. It was initially discovered by Jim Walsh.
B. It is a new habitat repurposed for marine life.
C. It was specially created as a tourist attraction.
D. It is a sunken ship recycled into a natural reef.
14. What is the author’s attitude toward artificial reefs
A. Cautious. B. Dismissive. C. Favorable. D. Doubtful.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. Oceanic Wonders: From Structures to Treasures.
B. Tappan Zee Bridge: A New Life Beneath the Sea.
C. Artificial Reefs: Solutions to Biodiversity Decline.
D. Underwater Homes: Balancing Dynamic Ecosystems.

The day had finally arrived. For weeks, my team — Maya, Jake, and I — had dreamed of this moment: the annual Market Day, when the school gym would transform into a lively fair of student-run businesses.
The past month had been intense. We spent countless hours brainstorming ideas, before we finally focused on “FashionHut” with creative handicrafts. Maya, who loved herbs, made flower-scented candles using recycled jars. Jake, skilled with knots, decided to learn weaving friendship bracelets (手链) from online courses. I later contributed painted wooden keychains.
Together, we calculated costs, detailed market strategies, and planned pricing carefully, all of which came down to a ten-page business plan. And the most stressful moment was when we presented our plan to the review committee. Eventually, they approved our $300 startup loan (借款). We jumped for joy in the hallway.
We produced over eighty items with reasonable prices: candles at 6, bracelets at 4, keychains at $3. So we needed to sell that many items to repay the loan.
“Everything’s perfect,” Maya declared. Watching students flood into the gym, I believed her.
But an hour passed. Then another. Our table remained painfully quiet while chaos erupted around us. A booth (摊位) named “Game On!” had a line of students waiting to play balloon-shooting. Next to them, “Magic Bakery” had sold out of cookies. Students walked past our “FashionHut” with barely a glance.
“Maybe our prices are too high,” Jake whispered. “But if we lower prices now, we won’t make enough.” I disagreed.
The $300 loan hung over us like a storm cloud. We had signed an agreement to repay the full amount. By the two-hour bell, we had sold exactly two candles and one bracelet. We had two hundred and eighty-four dollars to go.
Normally, I avoided talking to strangers. In class, I never raised my hand. But now thinking of the loan, weeks of work, and my friends’ disappointed faces, I wouldn’t want our business to go up in smoke.

(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
“New plan. We can no longer wait for them to come to us.” I declared.

Freedom Through Self-Discipline
From my perspective, true freedom does not mean doing whatever you want at will, but comes from self-discipline that keeps us away from laziness and meaningless distractions.
Last summer vacation, I found myself lost in mindless short-video browsing when I planned to improve my English. Realizing the problem, I made a clear study schedule and put my phone out of my reach during study time. After finishing daily tasks, I could enjoy my leisure time with no guilt. This experience proves that self-discipline brings us the real freedom to live as we expect.
答案】
“New plan. We can no longer wait for them to come to us,” I declared. I grabbed a couple of our items and stepped straight into the crowd. My voice was tense but firm as I approached the students, introducing our crafts proudly — candles in recycled jars, woven bracelets, and painted wooden keychains. Attracted by our unique handmade items and eco-friendly ideas, they followed me to our booth. Maya, Jake and I smiled and served every customer warmly. Students asked about the herbs in the candles and the story behind each keychain and bracelet, their curiosity turning into purchases.
After the final bell rang, we counted our earnings eagerly. Jake’s hands trembled as he counted the bills. “Three hundred and twenty-six dollars,” he announced. We hugged with laughter and joyful tears mixed. Three hundred for the loan, and twenty-six left to share. We realized the real reward was what we had discovered about ourselves. We had started the day as three nervous students with handmade crafts, but ended it as a team who learned that courage, not products, made our business succeed.
