Qomolangma is the world’s highest mountain, with a height of 8,848.86 metres. Millions of years ago, two parts of the Earth’s crust pushed against each other. The ground rose high above the sea, and Qomolangma was born.
Qomolangma is beautiful, but its living conditions are terrible. Even in July, the warmest month, the temperature is around -17℃. The wind is strong and the air is thin.
Only a few animals can live there. The yak is one of them. It can grow up to 2.2 metres and weigh up to 1,000 kilos. Its special blood can take in more oxygen, which helps it live in such a high place.
People have tried to climb Qomolangma for many years. In 1953, Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay became the first two people to reach the top. Since then, many brave climbers have risked their lives to stand on the roof of the world.
