When my mother passed away a few years ago, my father was left alone in the large house they had shared for 50 years. Without her to watch out for him, he was worried about who would find him and help if “something happened”.
My sister and I live in other states, so we hit on the idea that Dad could email us every morning when he awoke. Then “the Morning Report” was born.
He’s usually up by the crack of dawn, and his half a dozen or so sentences are waiting for me in my inbox when I wake up. If there’s no email, I call him, or my sister does, to make sure everything is fine. The reports have become more than an everyday check though; they’re a sort of diary, a catalyst (催化剂) for more extended conversations, and source of insight into his life.
Through these emails, Dad tells us about his routines. He might be heading to the grocery store for bananas, going to his cardiac-rehab (心脏康复) exercise class, or having lunch with friends. Recently he told us, “I’ve climbed halfway up Mount Washington!” Given his age and distance from New Hampshire, such a hike had been unlikely.
Each email closes with “All my love, Dad.” When my mother was alive, that feeling was normally reserved for her. Now that she is gone, he shares those feelings and his experiences with us. For me, what started as a simple security measure has spawned deeper closeness.
I’m grateful my father is still able to manage his computer and the Internet. I know the day will come when he’ll no longer be able to write the reports, and we’ll have to find other ways to keep track of one another. But until then, they are our way of knowing that another normal day has begun.
4. What was the original purpose of “the Morning Report”
A. To ensure the father’s safety. B. To track the father’s daily routines.
C. To keep the father from feeling lonely. D. To help the father manage his large house.
5. What can be inferred about the father’s current life
A. He leads a lonely life. B. He stays active and engaged.
C. He misses his wife very much. D. He is learning to use a computer.
6. Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word “spawned” in paragraph 5
A. Hidden. B. Weakened. C. Shadowed. D. Created.
7. What does the author imply about the future of “the Morning Report”
A. It will continue unchanged as long as the father lives.
B. It may eventually be replaced by other ways of staying in touch.
C. It has become less meaningful as the father grows older.
D. It will be taken over by the sister when the father can no longer write.
C
You can almost see scientists criticize whenever a new Hollywood film, filled with scientific errors. But one astronomer voiced a suggestion — maybe it’s OK if a movie makes mistakes in the facts, as long as it gets the big picture right about science and scientists.
Seth Shostak of the SETI Institute comes with his own experience on Hollywood sets. His biggest problem wasn’t with the alien (外星人) technology. Instead, he fought for the filmmakers to stop showing the scientists as data-calculating stereotypes (刻板印象). “Real scientists don’t describe an object entering the solar system as significant for the fact that it was not moving in an asteroidal ellipse (星状椭圆)…but moving at nearly three times ten-to the seventh meters per second,’” said Shostak. “More likely, they would say that there was ‘a rock headed our way’” “Besides trying to make his fictional versions more recognizably human, he emphasized the need for films to focus on conveying the scientific method rather than arguing about details.
Another scientist disagreed, saying that inaccurate science could have consequences beyond fictional settings. Wayne Grody, a physician at UCLA, suggested that wrong depictions (描绘,刻画) of medicine could confuse viewers. “Perhaps some people do take away more science from their favorite films or television shows, but there is the court case (诉讼案件) where someone successfully charges Grey’s Anatomy with (实习医生格蕾) misleading them on a medical condition.”
However, Shostak’s point seems work on the whole. Even medical educators have used shows to engage medical students to deal with medical issues. The power of big or small screen drama comes from persuasive characters that may represent brilliant doctors or scientific geniuses, but also have human quirks that allow viewers to empathize (共鸣). Such stories serve the purpose of helping explain science. After all, science fiction writer Isaac Asimov once remarked that science could become as mysterious and impossible to understand as magic. Storytellers may help shine a light into the foggy temple by creating relatable characters that practice science.
8. What is Seth Shostak’s main concern
A. The accuracy of alien technology depiction. B. The use of technical terms in scientific dialogue.
C. The emphasis on conveying the scientific method. D. The close-minded description of scientists.
9. What does Wayne Grody imply by mentioning the potential case against Grey’s Anatomy
A. Fictional medical errors can result in serious real-world confusion.
B. Television dramas are responsible for educating medical students.
C. Viewers have become more critical of scientific details in shows.
D. Courts should play a role in monitoring scientific content in media.
10. What does the underlined word “quirks” in the last paragraph probably mean
A. Talents. B. Ambitions. C. Characteristics. D. Weaknesses.
11. Which of the following proverbs best summarizes the main idea of the text
A. A picture is worth a thousand words. B. Don’t judge a book by its cover.
C. Seeing the forest for the trees. D. Every coin has two sides.
D
A colorful colony of photosynthetic (光合的) cyanobacteria, known as blue-green algae (藻), has successfully powered a computer microprocessor for more than six months, according to a study published in the journal Energy & Environmental Science.
The algae-computer system was placed in the window of biochemist Paolo Bombell’s home. What he saw next really blew his mind: It sat there from February to August, and all the while it was working. And even after the microprocessor has been disconnected, the cyanobacteria device continues to produce current. “Given the right conditions of light, temperature and water, I cannot predict when it will stop,” said Bombelli.
Cyanobacteria harvest energy from sunlight and make it into food for themselves. For this study, the researchers put the power-providing microorganisms into a plastic and steel enclosure, about the size of an AA battery, along with an aluminum anode (铝正极). Throughout the experiment, the connected microprocessor was programmed to do a bunch of calculations, and then check its own work. It did this in a 45-minute period, followed by 15 minutes of standby, continuously for months with the cyanobacteria unit as its only power source.
Even though the algae rely on a light source to feed, the bio-system continued to produce enough power to run the microprocessor in the dark. The scientists basically put down this phenomenon to leftovers. When there was light, the cyanobacteria cooked up an over-abundance of food, and when it was dark the microorganisms kept chewing on the extras.
According to Chris Howe, senior author of the study, the results suggest that the little bio-based battery alternative could serve as a way to power small electronics without rare earth elements, which are in short supply and under growing demand. Plus, the system could also help bridge the electricity divide, providing another power supply for people in rural areas or low-income countries.
Though the experiment’s results are promising, it’s important to keep in mind that the computer processor tested uses very little energy — requiring only 0.3 microwatts to run. More research is needed to know exactly how much the tiny AA-battery-sized device could scale up. Howe said, Putting one on your roof isn’t going to provide the power supply for your house at this stage.”
12. Which of the following facts about the algae-computer system surprised Bombelli
A. It can function without water.
B. It can convert light into power.
C. It can work for a long time.
D. It can stand high temperatures.
13. What can we learn about the bio-system from paragraph 4
A. It stores light for later use.
B. It works normally in the dark.
C. It consumes little food in the dark.
D. It produces food for people.
14. What will the research focus on next
A. How the device will work on the roof
B. Whether the device’s size can be reduced.
C. Whether the device can play a bigger role.
D. How the device will adapt to new environments.
15. What is the best title for the passage
A. The Future of Household Electricity Supply
B. Blue-Green Algae: A New Source of Food
C. An Algae-Powered Device Runs Computer for Months
D. A Promising Bio-Battery Creates the Miracle

“What is your name ” is a question most frequently asked when people meet for the first time. But for me, it was the first challenge I encountered as an international student in Ireland.
The pronunciation system of the Chinese language is quite different from that of English. For native speakers of English, some Chinese words are rather difficult to pronounce. My given name Qiuyu (秋雨), for instance, happened to be a great challenge for many of them. Every time I gave a self-introduction, I had to explain how to pronounce my name at least five times, yet they still could not say it the way I did.
Once in a lecture, the professor tried repeating my name after me over and over in front of thirty classmates. I really did not know whether I should continue correcting him or simply drop the matter. I feared that my classmates might grow tired of my efforts or even lose patience with me. After all, I did care about how others would think of me. I realized that if I didn’t stop, the entire lecture would be ruined. “It’s okay, professor,” I shrugged (耸肩). The awkward moment ended with the class erupting into laughter. I forced a smile, unsure how to respond further.
After that incident, I stopped acting as a “Chinese teacher.” Instead of correcting others when they were struggling to pronounce my name, I just smiled and nodded approvingly. This approach spared me the discomfort of having to over-explain. However, I soon found that by doing so, I might be losing something more important: the opportunity to share a small part of my cultural identity.

【答案】Dear Chris,
I am a student in your Western Architecture Appreciation course this term. I’ve noticed that many classmates’ participation in class isn’t high. One reason might be that some students find the professional terms too difficult to understand. Also, the teaching methods seem a bit one-sided, lacking interaction.
I suggest using more visual materials like videos to make the knowledge more accessible. You could also organize group discussions, which would encourage students to express their ideas and increase their engagement.
Hope these suggestions help.
Best regards,
Li Hua
【答案】One possible version:
In a class discussion, I was invited to explain the meaning of my name. Standing up, I felt a mix of nervousness and excitement. “My name, Qiuyu, combines the characters for autumn and rain in Chinese,” I began, my voice steady. “Autumn represents harvest and maturity, while rain symbolizes nourishment and growth. Together, they embody a time of abundance and renewal.” As I spoke, I noticed the rapt attention of my classmates, their eyes reflecting curiosity and respect. It was a moment of connection, a bridge built between cultures through the simple act of sharing my name.
Many of my classmates got interested and came up to me after class. They surrounded me, their questions pouring out like a stream. “What other names have beautiful meanings in Chinese ” “Can you teach us how to write our names in Chinese characters ” I smiled, feeling a warmth spread through me. I took out a piece of paper and began to sketch out characters, explaining each stroke and its significance. Through this interaction, I realized that by embracing my cultural identity, I was not only preserving my heritage but also enriching the lives of those around me. It was a small yet meaningful step towards fostering cultural understanding and appreciation.
