A
You can’t just rely on textbooks to learn English,if you want to learn a foreign language well.Actually, you need an excellent language environment. This does not mean that you have to move abroad or live with foreigners. It is also a good way to read the original books, and the best and most reliable ones are the classics. Here are four famous books.Let’s see which one you are most interested in.
Ulysses
Ulysses did “stream of consciousness” before the term existed, and it’s also a complicated (难懂的) novel filled with references, wordplay, confusing jokes, and intense, personal reflections by the characters.
Moby-Dick
Moby-Dick has a fame for being very dull.Melville’s novel wasn’t received well on publication (it took decades before people really started to realize how great it is),and the negative evaluation (评价) is repeated every year when students are forced to read it.
Pride and Prejudice
Pride and Prejudice is a masterpiece in the literary world, being the inspiration, basis, and model for so many modern novels. You’re probably more familiar with its plot(情节) and characters than you think. For a book written in the early 19th century, its modernity is surprising only until you realize this is the novel that in many ways defines what a modern novel is.
The Big Sleep
It’s true that the book is written in what seems to modern audiences like a self-consciously tough style, peppered with old-fashioned expressions, and the plot is famously complicated, even for a mystery. It actually has several loose ends that never get solved, but it doesn’t matter.
21.Which book failed to be popular at first
A.Ulysses.
B.Moby-Dick.
C.Pride and Prejudice.
D.The Big Sleep.
22.What is special about Pride and Prejudice
A.It is full of confusing jokes.
B.It is famous for its dullness.
C.It is a typical modern novel.
D.It has some mysterious(神秘的) ends.
23.Where is the text probably taken from
A.A textbook.
B.A novel.
C.A travel brochure.
D.An English magazine.

When Montgomery was at college,he decided to study the Chinese language.“My friends laughed at my decision.Just like most Americans, they didn’t know much about China then.Who knew what China would become in the 21st century?” he says.
To find a China-related job after graduating from university,he became a businessman related to US-China trade.Traveling and meeting people in different parts of China,he found that the more he learned about China, the more he was attracted by its history and culture.
When he found that there was no English podcast(播客) about Chinese history in 2010,he decided to launch one himself. He worked from home using very simple recording and editing facilities. Each of the half-hour episodes(集) took him 18 to 20 hours to research, write, record and edit.
“China has a great history.I try to get more Americans to appreciate it,” says Montgomery.“There are many topics to talk about.I use my common sense to feel what will be interesting to most people.”
His China History Podcast is now downloaded 1.5 million times a year, with audience from the United States,China and other countries.
“I downloaded a few episodes and discovered that they were perfect for those days when I drove a long distance. It turned the boring hours into enjoyable learning experiences,” says Seligman,62,an author who spent eight years in China.“Montgomery brings Chinese history and culture to life in a completely new way.As you listen, you often get the impression that he was a witness(见证者) to the events he described.”
Many overseas Chinese are grateful to Montgomery for reconnecting them with their ancestral roots. And to his surprise, local Chinese are also welcoming the show as a great resource for learning English.
“After more than 25 years doing sales and marketing of ‘made in China’ products,I’ve now become a sort of a salesman of Chinese history,” says Montgomery.
24.What did Montgomery’s friends think of his decision to study Chinese
A.Unconcerned. B.Curious.
C.Unsupportive. D.Favorable.
25.How did Montgomery choose topics
A.By referring to similar works online.
B.On the basis of his own understanding.
C.Through recommendations from Chinese.
D.By using the knowledge learnt in college.
26.Which of the following can be used to describe Montgomery
A.Honest and generous.
B.Focused and creative.
C.Intelligent and humorous.
D.Strict and knowledgeable.
27.What is the suitable title for the text
A.“Selling” Chinese History to the World
B.Bringing Chinese Together Through Podcast
C.Exploring a New Resource for Language Learning
D.“Creating” History—Popularizing “Made in China” Products

Kids are three times more likely to choose to be Internet celebrities(名人) than astronauts(航天员),a survey found recently. Many are already on their way—more and more children are now making and sharing videos on social media.
Meanwhile, education experts worry that going after Internet fame won’t be good for children in the long run.Their biggest concern is that kids don’t know how being on the Internet today might affect them in the future. The parts of the brain that people use to make decisions don’t fully mature until around age 25,so children cannot imagine how their future might be affected by what they share now.
What’s worse, some parents, who are crazy about becoming famous on their own, can’t watch out for the best interests of their own children.A young mother,Michelle Hobson, was accused of starving and kicking her children when they didn’t do what she wished for in the videos. She was charged with child abuse and ordered to distance herself from kids.
Keeping famous on the Internet takes much time and patience, too. It can distract students away from homework, sports and other activities. For example, one of the superstars,14-year-old Emma Garza, dropped out of school to become a Vlogger(video blogger). She said that making videos was so tough that she couldn’t make time for study and even suffered back pain and weakening eyesight.
Although we don’t yet know the effects on a child’s development by constantly performing to entertain others,we can easily imagine that the effort to attract viewers will be less helpful to a kid, compared with spending that time reading a book. For a kid today, becoming an Internet superstar might not only be more popular than being an astronaut. It might also be more dangerous.
28.What problem is discussed in paragraph 1
A.Internet affects kids’ growth.
B.Young kids seek Internet fame.
C.Social media mislead children.
D.Children watch too many videos.
29.What is the major concern of education experts about children
A.Security. B.Family.
C.Study. D.Future.
30.Why is Emma Garza mentioned in the passage
A.To stress her success.
B.To introduce a new career.
C.To show the influence on students.
D.To encourage kids to be Vloggers.
31.What does the author think of children’s being an Internet celebrity
A.Negative. B.Doubtful.
C.Beneficial. D.Exciting.
D
Every year millions of electronics and electrical appliances(电器) are thrown away. This e-waste includes cell phones, computers, household appliances and medical equipment. If not properly dealt with,e-waste can release(释放) up to 100 different chemicals into the environment. However, less than one quarter of the waste is reused. Most people will consider buying new electronics and electrical appliances if the old ones are out of order.
About 80 percent of broken electronics are repairable. If anything isn’t done to encourage repairs,e-waste will grow to about 74 million tons by 2030.Now a new concept is hoping to change the facts on the ground by creating “fixing factories”.Two of the factories opened in Camden and Brent in the spring of 2023.The factories were inspired by the nonprofit Restart Project, which began holding repair parties about ten years ago.People were invited to have their electronics repaired over a cup of beer.
“Camden is where we ran our first party almost 10 years ago,and we’ve enjoyed bringing our events to pubs, community centers, festivals, universities and other places,” said Fiona Dear, the charity’s co-director.“We hope the local fixing factory will provide an opportunity for people to take their out-of-order electronics or electrical appliances to us for repairs.”
But the factories may not be enough, according to Dermot, project manager for the Camden branch, who has been repairing things in his whole life.“There need to be huge changes in the way our things are made,” he said.Changes in the industry to make electronics repairable are necessary. This change will make the world a greener and safer place.
32.What does the author say about e-waste
A.It is very easy to reuse.
B.It is kept under control.
C.It grows faster than expected.
D.It does not get much attention.
33.What might be the goal of the fixing factories
A.To hold repair parties for people to have a good time.
B.To make people take their broken electronics for repairs.
C.To encourage people to reduce the use of electronics.
D.To produce electronics that can be used for much longer.
34.How does Restart Project work according to the text
A.It offers help and support to factories.
B.It holds fixing parties in various places.
C.It cooperates with different organizations.
D.It instructs people to use electronics wisely.
35.What is a good way to reduce e-waste according to Dermot
A.Producing enough high-quality electronics.
B.Improving people’s ability to repair electronics.
C.Designing electronics better to make them repairable.
D.Building more factories to produce better electronics.

Unaided,we can’t do anything without our feet.So why, when our quality of life is directly related to being active,do many of us ignore(忽视) these two important parts of our body
36 In 2021,a study over a rise in foot issues(问题) and how poor foot health affects everything from physical activity to the overall health of able-bodied people was conducted.“Foot problems can reduce quality of life, lead to loss of balance, make it difficult to put on shoes and increase the risk of falling,” the authors wrote in the journal Scientific Reports.Meanwhile,a 2017 study, also in Spain,of able-bodied university students confirmed this too. 37 It increased their risk of being socially cut off.
If foot pain limits your activity and lasts more than a week, says Paul Langer,a sports-medicine podiatrist(足疗医生),it’s time to see a doctor for foot treatment. 38 They’re like the base of the Tower of Pisa. When they’re off,the tower leans(倾斜).
Therefore, keeping our foot happy is rather critical(关键的). 39 Experts say every move we make creates a chain reaction in our muscles, and joints(关节).
The foot is the driver of all movement. 40 If a foot doesn’t work normally,it can drive everything up the chain to be of disfunction, too. The key to a healthy foot is strength and mobility through the hips(臀部).Therefore our feet need help from their friends above to keep them working properly.
A.Spanish scientists expressed concern.
B.All of this can affect activities of daily living.
C.In fact, seeking help from experts is the best way.
D.Poor foot health prevented them from being physically active.
E.Taking care of your feet sometimes begins elsewhere in your body.
F.When the foot hits the ground, everything else in the body changes.
G.If the feet aren’t performing properly, they throw everything else off.

One day,I read a very sad story about a police dog named Solo that had been sent into a building to catch a suspect(犯罪嫌疑人).The last thing Solo did before entering the building was to lick his owner’s face.A few minutes later,Solo was shot and killed in the line of duty.I knew how sad that officer must have felt because my own dog,Kela, had recently died.
The article went on to tell about a fundraiser(募捐活动) that was going on to help buy bulletproof vests(防弹背心) for the police dogs there.I thought every police dog should be protected just like the police.I may be a kid,but why can’t I do a fundraiser to help save the dogs in our area
Then I found out that a bulletproof vest for a police dog costs $475.My mom thought it was a lot of money for an eleven-year-old girl to raise, but she told me to go ahead and try anyway.
We called our local Oceanside Police Department and learned that their dogs needed bulletproof vests. At that point,I realized that I needed a name for the fundraiser and thought since I was trying to protect just one dog’s life,I would call my program Vest A Dog.
I decided that vet’s and pet stores would be really good places to go with donation boxes and Vest A Dog fliers(传单).I used little green take-out boxes, decorated with a picture of Tiko, the dog I chose to vest, and me.I wrote on each box “Help protect the life of a police dog by donating a dollar.”
One afternoon, after all the boxes had been placed throughout our community,I got a call from a local newspaper reporter who had seen one of my fliers. The reporter decided to do an article about Vest A Dog.That ought to spread the word,I thought.I asked Officer Jim Wall, who is Tiko’s partner,if they would have their picture taken with me for the article and they did.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
After the article came out,I eagerly checked to see if there were any donations.
About three weeks later,I counted the money from all of the boxes.

M:Well, that’s good—some of our workers are afraid of them, including me! I take care of them because I’m in charge, but they make me nervous.
W:I find them relaxing, honestly. They’re such interesting animals.I’d be happy to look after them.

A
You can’t just rely on textbooks to learn English,if you want to learn a foreign language well.Actually, you need an excellent language environment.
根据Moby-Dick中的“Melville’s novel wasn’t received well on publication (it took decades before people really started to realize how great it is)”可知,Moby-Dick这本书一开始反响不好,故选B。
22.What is special about Pride and Prejudice
A.It is full of confusing jokes.
B.It is famous for its dullness.
C.It is a typical modern novel.
D.It has some mysterious(神秘的) ends.
根据Pride and Prejudice中的“For a book written in the early 19th century, its modernity is surprising only until you realize this is the novel that in many ways defines what a modern novel is.”
23.Where is the text probably taken from
A.A textbook.
B.A novel.
C.A travel brochure.
D.An English magazine.
根据第一段“You can’t just rely on textbooks to learn English,if you want to learn a foreign language well...It is also a good way to read the original books, and the best and most reliable ones are the classics...”

根据第一段中“When Montgomery was at college,he decided to study the Chinese language.”和“My friends laughed at my decision.”
25.How did Montgomery choose topics
A.By referring to similar works online.
B.On the basis of his own understanding.
C.Through recommendations from Chinese.
D.By using the knowledge learnt in college.
答案 B

26.Which of the following can be used to describe Montgomery
A.Honest and generous.
B.Focused and creative.
C.Intelligent and humorous.
D.Strict and knowledgeable.
27.What is the suitable title for the text
A.“Selling” Chinese History to the World
B.Bringing Chinese Together Through Podcast
C.Exploring a New Resource for Language Learning
D.“Creating” History—Popularizing “Made in China” Products
答案 A
综合全文内容,尤其根据最后一段中Montgomery所言“After more than 25 years doing sales and marketing of ‘made in China’ products,I’ve now become a sort of a salesman of Chinese history”可知,他通过制作英语播客介绍中国历史,已经成了中国历史的销售员,故“把中国历史‘销售’到世界各地”符合文章主旨,适合作为标题。故选A。
C

由第一段中“However, less than one quarter of the waste is reused. Most people will consider buying new electronics and electrical appliances if the old ones are out of order.”
33.What might be the goal of the fixing factories
A.To hold repair parties for people to have a good time.
B.To make people take their broken electronics for repairs.
C.To encourage people to reduce the use of electronics.
D.To produce electronics that can be used for much longer.
由第二段中“The factories were inspired by the nonprofit Restart Project, which began holding repair parties about ten years ago.People were invited to have their electronics repaired over a cup of beer.”和第三段中“We hope the local fixing factory will provide an opportunity for people to take their out-of-order electronics or electrical appliances to us for repairs.”

36.答案 A
解析 根据后文“In 2021,a study over a rise in foot issues(问题) and how poor foot health affects everything from physical activity to the overall health of able-bodied people was conducted.”以及“Meanwhile,a 2017 study, also in Spain,of able-bodied university students confirmed this too.”
37.答案 D
解析 前文“Meanwhile,a 2017 study, also in Spain,of able-bodied university students confirmed this too.”点明了对健全大学生的研究证实了足部问题的影响,后文“It increased their risk of being socially cut off.”
38.答案 G
解析 后文“They’re like the base of the Tower of Pisa. When they’re off,the tower leans(倾斜).”
39.答案 E
解析 后文“Experts say every move we make creates a chain reaction in our muscles, and joints(关节).”
40.答案 F
解析 前文“The foot is the driver of all movement.”点明足部是所有运动的驱动者,后文“If a foot doesn’t work normally,it can drive everything up the chain to be of disfunction, too.”

The exhibition of Chinese folk art is now on at the Capital Museum and it will last until April 30th.Artists throughout the country bring their masterpieces:embroidery from Suzhou, paper cutting from Shanxi, and calligraphy from masters. Not only will it immerse you in Chinese culture but it will allow you to watch the artists create works up close.By the way,you can even try it out in the hands-on area.
I wonder if you are interested in it.I am sure you won’t be disappointed.
Yours,
Li Hua

After the article came out,I eagerly checked to see if there were any donations.Every day after school,I rushed to each location, hoping to find the boxes filled with contributions. To my delight,I started noticing more and more people stopping by the boxes, curious about Vest A Dog and willing to donate.Children were emptying their piggy banks, while adults were digging into their wallets for spare change or even writing checks. The community’s response was overwhelming, and my heart swelled with gratitude.
About three weeks later,I counted the money from all of the boxes. With trembling hands,I separated the bills and coins,triple-checking each count. The total amount astounded me—it was far beyond what I had ever imagined. We had managed to raise not just enough for one vest, but sufficient funds for multiple vests.I couldn’t wait to share the news with Officer Jim Wall and Tiko.Their joy and appreciation upon hearing the update was priceless and I realized that no dream is too big,and even a young heart can make a significant impact.
