Fight climate change while traveling
Whether you’re commuting or vacationing, travel can cause a lot of pollution, for most vehicles are powered by burning gas. As the pie chart illustrates, the transportation sector accounted for a major share of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions in 2022. Tourism also contributes to climate pollution, with transportation making up the majority of tourism-related emissions.
But that doesn’t mean you have to stop traveling for fun altogether. You can make a difference by focusing on greener transportation options and fuel efficiency.??
·Use Greener Transportation
Air travel emissions can be reduced by choosing direct flights or taking the train or a bus instead of flying. Even if a bus is gas-powered, it’s better for the climate than a car because it can transport many people with a single engine. If a car is the best option, consider replacing your traditional car with an electric or hybrid vehicle at the end of its life. (And drive the speed limit!). Clean energy helps avoid additional emissions.
·Focus on Efficiency
If available, minimizes fuel use, saving money and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.??Drive smart and improve your?fuel economy?by going easy on the brakes and gas and keeping your car well-maintained.??

The light is pouring through the windows as I stare attentively at a violin-shaped piece of wood in my hands. I run my fingertips over the rough surface to feel for imperfections that will need to be removed. “Violin making is easy,” my teacher used to joke, “just take away all the bits of wood that aren’t a violin.”
By the time I’m in my workshop holding this piece of wood, I’ve already been up for many hours. I’m an early riser. After coffee, I head out for an hour-long walk with my dog, Eggs. Most of my ideas come to me during morning walks, including my proudest project to date: a violin I made for a film supporting the Right to Roam campaign, which advocates for public access to the countryside in the landscape. The violin has become the community’s shared treasure for local folk players to take into the hills and play.
I love walking into my workshop in the morning. My work varies from small adjustments to more extensive work requiring a careful handling of the violin as a historical object. You never know what you’ll find inside an old violin. One of my favorite repairs involved a violin full of cracks. When I removed the front of it, I found its inside filled with pencil signatures from makers of the past. One read, in beautiful old calligraphic writing: “Le Petit Luthier à Paris, 1825”.
Although many heritage crafts, like violin making, play a vital role in cultural economy, they’re usually not big money earners. My choice of job also informs my lifestyle. While my friends devote time to travel and spend money on luxuries, I invest my time in community, nature, and my growth as a craftsperson. I didn’t truly find my way to those things, or realize how much fulfilling they are, until I began working as a violin maker.
4. What’s required to be a violin maker?
A. Good sense of humor. B. Keen eyes and sensitive touch.
C. Good knowledge of technology. D. Rich experience in cutting wood.
5. Why does the author value the film project so much?
A. It is for public welfare. B. It is loved by the folk players.
C. It is highly ranked by experts. D. It was shown in a famous film.
6. What impressed the author most about the old violin she repaired?
A. The fine skill it showed. B. The person who crafted it.
C. Traces of history it carried. D. Severe damage it suffered.
7. What does the author want to convey through his story?
A. Love will find a way. B. Still water runs deep.
C. Actions speak louder than words. D. The best things in life are not material.

A broader phenomenon swept over the developed Western world in the early 2010s. Rates of depression, anxiety and self-harm rose sharply. Why?
In the summer of 2022, Jonathan Haidt was working on a book project about how smartphones and social media rewired society in the 2010s. He quickly realized that the impact of social media on kids could not be explained in one chapter — it needed a book of its own. Hence,?The Anxious Generation?is Volume 1, in a sense, of the larger project.
Haidt begins? The Anxious Generation by examining adolescent mental health trends. What happened to young people in the early 2010s that caused the rise of anxiety and depression around 2012? He offers an explanation by telling two stories: the decline of play-based childhood and the rise of phone-based childhood. He shows how the “play-based childhood” began to decline in the 1980s, and how it was finally wiped out by the arrival of the “phone-based childhood” in the early 2010s. He presents more than a dozen mechanisms by which this “great rewiring of childhood” has affected children’s social and brain development, covering everything from lack of sleep to divided attention, addiction, loneliness, social comparison, and perfectionism.
Most important, Haidt issues a clear call to action. He explains how parents, school, governments, tech companies, and young people are trapped in “collective action problems”, and then proposes four simple rules that might set us free: giving children far more time for outdoor play with mixed-age groups; involving them in stable real-world communities rather than online networks; delaying smartphones and restricting social media access until at least high school.
He emphasizes that change is possible if society acts together. We cannot afford to ignore his findings about protecting our children — and ourselves — from the psychological damage of a phone-based life.
8. Why did Jonathan Haidt decide to write? The Anxious Generation?
A. To expand his original project.
B. To address an issue worth fuller study.
C. To explore how smartphones reshape society.
D. To replace his previous research with a new focus.
9. What does the underlined words “great rewiring ” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The lack of outdoor play.
B. The popularity of social media.
C. The increase of mental illness.
D. The switch from play to phones.
10. What does Haidt emphasize as essential for protecting children?
A. Stabilizing social networks.
B. Banning smartphones before college.
C. Relying mainly on individual parents.
D. Making joint efforts across social groups.
11. Where is the text probably taken from?
A. A biography of a famous writer.
B. A book review in a literary magazine.
C. An introduction to a social science book.
D. A psychology research paper in a journal.

Pancreatic cancer has become one of the deadliest forms of cancer across the world — it is often called a “silent killer” largely because early detection is so hard. Symptoms rarely appear until the disease has advanced, leaving patients with a five-year survival rate of only about 10 percent.
Now, new research suggests that an AI tool may significantly improve early detection of this deadly disease. In a study published in Nature Medicine, researchers from China found that an AI tool called PANDA, when analyzing routine noncontrast CT scans, could correctly identify 93 percent of people who had pancreatic lesions (病灶).?
Contrast CT scans, used to confirm its presence, involve large amounts of radiation, so many experts advise against widespread screening. But lower-radiation alternatives, noncontrast CTs, produce less clearly defined pictures, making it harder for radiologists to identify abnormalities. The tool, developed by researchers with Chinese tech giant Alibaba, was trained to address this by using an AI model to spot potential cancer.
Crucially, this process relies on the AI model being trained on mapped data from contrast scans. The team first asked a radiologist to manually mark the contrast CTs of more than 2,000 known pancreatic patients with the locations of their?lesions. The engineers then algorithmically (通过算法) mapped the highlighted lesions onto the same patients’ noncontrast CTs. Those noncontrast scans were then fed to the AI model, so that it could learn to detect potential cancer even in less detailed images.
Still, researchers cautioned that more real-world data was needed to determine whether the tool’s benefits outweigh the risks of false positives and unnecessary testing. Dr. Ajit Goenka of Mayo Clinic stressed the importance of reducing false alarms, noting that hundreds in Ningbo faced unnecessary terror and testing only to find they were healthy. Dr. Diane Simeone of UC San Diego added that the tool might be more useful for trainee doctors than for experienced specialists, but acknowledged it could be a valuable backstop for hospitals lacking specialists.
12. How does the author illustrate cancer’s severity in the first paragraph?
A. By defining a term.
B. By providing statistics.
C. By giving examples.
D. By describing a medical process.
13. What is the AI model aimed at?
A. Reducing the radiation of CT scans.
B. Identifying lesions in less clear images.
C. Improving the clarity of scan images.
D. Replacing contrast CT scans completely.
14. What is paragraph 4 of the text mainly about?
A. The comparison of two CT scans.
B. The role of radiologists in the process.
C. The cause of false positives in detection.
D. The functional principle of the AI model.
15. What is Dr. Diane Simeone’s attitude towards the potential use of PANDA?
A. Fully supportive. B. Highly critical.
C. Cautiously optimistic. D. Deeply skeptical.

Pickleball: A Fastest-Growing Sport
Ready to learn how to play pickleball? You’re not alone. ____16____ The International Federation of Pickleball is working to make sure pickleball will be part of the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
____17____ It is played on a badminton-sized court with a net height of 36", using square paddles and a plastic ball similar in size to a tennis ball. The 7-foot area on each side of the net is called “kitchen”, where players aren’t allowed to hit volleys (a shot hit out of the air).
Unlike tennis, you can score only when it’s your turn to serve-hitting the ball diagonally (成对角线) to the receiver. It’s not meant to be an overpowering weapon like in tennis. ____18____ And if your receiver fails to return the ball over the net, either from the serve or in a rally (对抗), you get the point.
What is the two-bounce rule in pickleball? It means that after a serve, the ball must bounce once on each side before anyone can hit it out of the air. ____19____ If you’re standing close to the net, you can’t legally hit it out of the air because you can only volley once the ball has bounced on each side. Once the two-bounce rule is met, all players are free to move to the kitchen and start volleying.
The game continues until one team gets 11 points. However, they must win by 2. That means 10-10 isn’t over; 11-10 isn’t over. You might see final scores of 12-10, 15-13, or even 21-19. ____20____
A. The sport is tons of fun.
B. These are often the most exciting games.
C. Otherwise, the serving team gains an advantage.
D. Instead, the goal is simply to keep the ball in the air.
E. Pickleball borrows from tennis, badminton and table tennis.
F. That’s why it makes no sense for the serving team to start at the kitchen.
G. Pickleball has more than five million players across 84 countries to date.

My brother’s wedding brought us to Mexico City. It was a beautiful place with amazing food, but neither of us spoke Spanish, and we were completely unfamiliar with the local ways. Before the trip, my future sister-in-law had given us strict tips on getting around.
“Never take a red-and-gold taxi. They are often unlicensed and may take you on a wild ride across the city,” she warned seriously. I nodded and kept that in mind.
On the day of the wedding, my mother and I had our hair and makeup done at the hotel. Once ready, we planned to take the hotel bus to the wedding site across the street. We could have walked if not for the heels.
Wearing elegant gowns (礼服), we stood outside our hotel awaiting transport. A coach pulled up and the hotel staff led us into empty seats. We asked the driver if we were bound for the wedding, and the answer was a firm nod. All the other rows were full of people in formal wear, chatting excitedly in Spanish. but I couldn’t understand a single word. Nothing! They were going to my brother’s wedding, I assumed.
But soon, I found we were on a wrong bus — it was for another wedding. My mother panicked and begged to get off, but we were on a busy road where pulling over was impossible. Twenty minutes later, we were left at the driver’s destination. We had no choice but to wait for another ride.
We waited. And waited. Still no sign of a taxi. My mother was in full boil. She was certain she was going to miss her son’s wedding. I was certain we wouldn’t but thought it was going to be tight to get in the pictures before the church. My mother began to sweat, and her?smoky eye?ran. After what seemed a century, a shabby red-and-gold taxi arrived.
At the sight of it, my mother and I froze instantly.

【答案】Dear Jenny,
I’m glad to hear that our English club is collecting ideas for the upcoming May Day activity.
After careful consideration, I would like to choose Fruit Picking as our activity. On one hand, fruit picking can help us get close to nature and relax ourselves after long-term study. On the other hand, it offers a good chance to practice our oral English while working with partners. Besides, it can let us experience the joy of labor, which is the true meaning of May Day.
In short, Fruit Picking is a meaningful and interesting activity. I hope my choice can be helpful to you.
Yours,
Li Hua
【答案】 At the sight of it, my mother and I froze instantly. We both remembered the warning clearly — never take a red-and-gold taxi. My heart raced as I pictured all kinds of terrible things. My mother whispered anxiously that we had no other choice if we didn’t want to miss the wedding. With no taxis in sight and time running out, we had to hold our breath and get in. The inside was clean, and the driver, a middle-aged man with a kind smile, greeted us gently. I nervously told him the church address, my hands shaking slightly.
We were sitting nervously when the driver broke the silence. He spoke simple English and asked why we looked so worried. We explained we were late for my brother’s wedding and had taken the wrong bus. He nodded understandingly and drove steadily and safely through the streets. He even took a shortcut to avoid traffic. Within fifteen minutes, we arrived at the church. We thanked him gratefully and rushed inside, just in time for the wedding photos. It turned out that not every red-and-gold taxi was dangerous, and this driver had saved the day.
