English Market Towns to Visit in the UK
English market towns come in many shapes and sizes. Each has a personality shaped by
the goods and services produced and traded for centuries. But each town has more to do
than shop.
Hereford, Herefordshire
Hereford has remained a lively market town since 1189. Skirting the town square, you' ll find lovely
shops, ealerics, and the Black and White House Museum. The Hereford Cathedral is the most impressive
building in town. It's also home to an ancient library. One of the four original copies of the Magne Carta is
displayed there.
Ludlow, Shropshire
Ludlow is known as the Foodie Center of England. Butcher shops, greengrocers, bakeries, and cheese
shops line the town square. Bordering the square, the Ludlow Castle is a “must explore” medieval stronghold.
The three-day Ludlow Food Festival is held each September.
Shrewsbury, Shropshire
Getting to Shrewsbury Town Center from London is challenging but worth the anxiety. The River Severn
has a significant turn surrounding the town, almost making an island of Shrewsbury Town Center. The shape
creates a perfect market where goods could be shipped and received using the river as a highway. Flowers
are everywhere-hanging baskets, window boxes, and plant(ers-just what you imagine in an attractive English
market town.
Mevagissey, Cornwall
Even if you haven't been to the small fishing village Mevagissey, you' ve probably seen it in a movie or
British TV show. The working harbor(港口) took shape in 1774. Fishermen go out to sea daily and sell their
fish in harbor-side markets. Don't leave the harbor without a traditional Cornish pie. It's delicious.
21. Where can you find an original copy of the Magna Carta
A. In the Ludlow Castle. B. In the Foodie Center of England.
C. In the Hereford Cathedral. D. In the Black and White House Museum.
22. What is a feature of Shrewsbury Town Center

23. What does the author suggest visitors do in Mevagissey
A. Try the Cornish pie. B. Watch a British TV show.
C. Go fishing in the sea. D. Take pictures of the harbor.

Five years ago, a truly unforgettable event took place. My wife and I were celebrating our
40th wedding anniversary(纪念日 ) that year. To our delight, it was a splendid event, lovingly
hosted by our sons just for us. Our dear, old friends gave us a wonderful surprise with their
thoughtful gifts and heartfelt congratulations. Our gift to each other was a driving trip out west. We
drove from Ontario into Alberta, then southward into Glacier National Park in Montana, and
continued to Yellowstone National Park.
It was a cold spring day, and the Bear tooth Highway had opened for the season just days
before. Alongside the road, there was still a great amount of snow there. The scenery was so
impressive that we made lots of stops to record memories with my camera. At the highest point of
the highway, I stopped at a lookout to catch the amazing views, with my wife in the center of my
camera lens.
There were not many cars on the road. Sometimes, cars with energetic young tourists passed
by. And then we heard a motorcycle in the distance. The driver of the motorcycle, who wore dirty
clothes, parked behind our cars. Approaching us, he spoke only a simple command,“Give me your
camera and get over there with your wife.” I must admit I felt nervous that we might be robbed
where we just orchestrated some beautiful memories. Surprisingly, he just took a picture of us,
handed
back my camera and rode off before we could offer our thanks. Unexpectedly, the photo he took is
now one of the most valuable and prized of our trip.
In that unexpected encounter, I absorbed a lesson in the most unlikely of places. We should
never judge a man by his appearance. To the motorcyclist who may one day read this story and
remember us: we wish to extend our deepest appreciation and a heartfelt“Thank you” for the
kindness you showed us that day.
24. What do we know about the trip
A. It was a gift for their wedding anniversary.
B. It was a suggestion from their friends.
C. It was in the late autumn five years ago.
D. It was taken by train to the west.
25. What caused the couple to frequently pause on their trip along Beartooth Highway
A. Road signs. B. Impressive scenery.
C. Car problems. D. Complex roadblocks.
26. Why was the author nervous when the motorcycle driver offered to take a picture
A. He could have lost the camera
B. The motorcycle driver would borrow the camera.
C. His wife might not be satisfied with the view there.
D. The motorcycle driver might not bc good at the taking pictures.
27. Which of the following best describes the driver of the motorcycle
A. Rich and generous. B. Kind and straightforward.
C. Creative and capable. D. Careful and admirabie.
C
The human body is always giving off different chemicals through breath and skin. Some of
these can act as early warnings of illness. A famous case is Joy Milne, a retired nurse. She noticed a
special strong smell on her husband years before he was found to have Parkinson's disease. Later,
science tests proved she could correctly tell who had the disease just by their smell. This shows that
changes in how a person smells can give us important information about their health.
Scientists are now studying small chemical particles called volatile organic compounds
(VOCs). Our bodies make these as part of their normal work, and we release them through sweat
and breath. When a person gets sick—— with an infection, cancer, or a brain disease—— these
VOCs can change. For example, diabetic ketoacidosis(糖尿病酮症酸中毒) might cause a sweet,
fruity smell. Problems with the liver or kidneys can lead to a musty (发霉的) smell. Some illnesses
like cholera and tuberculosis (结核病) also have special smells.
The human nose cannot smell many of these weak, sickness-related chemicals. But dogs with
special training have shown they can smell illnesses like prostate cancer and malaria. Learning from
this, scientists are building tools like “electronic noses”. These machines use man-made sensors to
“smell” and find patterns linked to diseases for early checks.
High-tech methods are also helping scientists find the exact chemicals that point to sicknesses
like Parkinson’s disease. Soon, we might have very fast and simple tests using just a breath sample
or a cotton swab wiped on the skin. This could make finding diseases much quicker. Finding
sickness earlier in this way could change how doctors normally work. Studying body smells opens
new roads for health checks. It also shows us how closely our body's inner work is connected to
our health, reminding us there is still much to learn about the signals our bodies send out.
28. What do we know about Joy Milne
A. She is working in the hospital. B. She can examine patients with her nose.
C. She smelled a particular smell on her husband. D. She did tests to prove her husband's
disease.
29. What does the example of a fruity smell in diabetic ketoacidosis patients show
A. VOCs will reduce when people get sick. B. VOCs make patients release a pleasant smell.
C. VOC changes may lead to diabetic ketoacidosis. D. VOC changes can tell us about health
problems.
30. Why are scientists developing electronic noses
A. To make doctors smell illnesses. B. To detect smells humans cannot smell.
C. To train dogs more effectively. D. To cure diseases like cancer.
31. Which can be the best title for the text
A. Using Body Smells to Find Diseases Early
B. Joy Milne and Her Speech Sense of Smell
C. Dogs Can Smell Diseases Better than Humans
D. Technology Has been Used for Health Checks
D
In an age when digital assistants complete our sentences before we fully form them, it is
easy to believe that printed dictionaries have outlived their usefulness. Yet they remain essential,
because no tool better reminds us that language is not simply corrected—— it is crafted.
Before spell-check and AI, students and writers turned to dictionaries not only to check
meanings but also to explore usage examples and word histories. A student drafting an essay, for
instance, might look up “charge” and discover it can mean “accuse” ,rush forward” or “fill with
energy”. Choosing among these possibilities required thought, and that process often shaped the
writer's ideas. An AI assistant, by contrast, may simply replace the word with the most common
option, leaving little room for personal intention.
Dictionaries have also played a guiding role in English. Johnson's and Webster's dictionaries,
widely used by schools and publishers, helped establish spelling and meaning at times when
regional dialects differed sharply. Even today, when dictionary makers update entries to reflect new
expressions such as “ghosting” or “finsta”, they rely on everyday speakers for credence. This back-and-
forth —— public use influenc ng dictionaries. dictionaries influenc ng public use —— keeps
language both flexible and shared.
But this balance is weakening. As online communication takes over daily life, formal English
ebbs. Casual abbreviations, emesis, and speech-like sentences now appear in emails and even workplace
reports. For many young people, writing “Sounds good!!” reads more confident than a polished, formal
sentence The shift is understandable, yet it raises a question: If algorithms(算法) creakingly finish our
sentences, do we still learn how to shape them ourselves
AI writing tools offer clean, quick suggestions, but they rely on fixed patterns. As George Orwell
once warned, such ready-made phrasing can “think our thoughts” for us. When writers accept every
suggestion, originality (独创性) slowly disappears. Dictionaries, by contrast, push us to explore options
and make deliberate choices.
Our ability to express ourselves shapes who we are. Losing the dictionary would mean losing not
only a reference book, but a way of thinking —— one that keeps language creative, thoughtful, and
deeply human.
32. What does the example of “charge” show
A. Word histories are stressed a lot in dictionaries.
B. Al assistants are more efficient than printed dictionaries.
C. Printed dictionaries help users gain deeper insight into words.
D. Students struggle to choose the right meaning of certain words.
33. What does the underlined word “ebbs” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Fades. B. Arises.
C. Improves. D. Stabilizes.
34. What can be inferred from paragraph 5
A. No convenience comes without a cost.
B. Al tools contribute much to creative works.
C. Dictionaries provide more fixed word choices than AI tools.
D. George Orwell encouraged the use of existing writing patterns.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. The History of English Dictionaries
B. AI Asstasents Threaten Language Creativity
C. The Necessity of Formal English in Digital Age
D. Printed Dictionaries Are Still Essential in Digul times

第二节(满分 15分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写。
Father's Day was in two weeks. I didn't know what to get Dad. Last year I made him a photo
album. This year I wanted to do something different.
At dinner, Dad accidentally dropped his favorite blue tie into his soup bowl. The tie was
ruined. I suddenly knew what to get Dad for Father's Day!
“How much does a tie cost ” I asked Mom the next morning.' Depends,” she said, some can
cost twenty dollars. Do you have enough money, Carter “ No,” I said sadly.
When I got to my room to change into my school clothes, I noticed a hole in my shirt. At
school l picked at the hole in my shirt. I thought about how I could come up with enough money to
buy a tie. I took a deep sigh, and played with the hole some more. As the hole grew in size, an idea
sprang into my mind.
After school, I puiled out my worn soccer sweater and Dad's old work shirt from the closet.
“Mom!” I called, waving the clothes. “Can we make a patchwork (拼布) tie from these The
store-bought ones are too boring.” Mom gazed at the worn edges and nodded, pointing to her
sewing kit (针线包). Inside the sewing kit were needles, thread, and scissors that she had always
used before.“Let's start with hand-made items —— it's slower, but meaningful.” She handed me a
needle and thread, showing me how to thread it through the eye of the needle. My first attempt was
a mess —— the thread got stuck and I hurt my finger. “Ouch!” I cried out, sucking my thumb. Mo
m laughed softly, pressing a bandage into my palm. “Even the best tailors started from zero, honey.
Don't give up.”
Sitting in my room that night, I realized that if I wanted to give Dad a Fathor's Day gift, I would
have to make full preparations.
From then on, I was absorbed in my work every day after school.第二部分:阅读理解 (Reading)

Paragraph 1:
Over the next two weeks, my room turned into a workshop. I carefully cut the worn
soccer sweater and Dad's old work shirt into small, uneven squares. My fingers were
pricked countless times by the needle, leaving tiny red dots, but I didn't stop. I spent
every night after school hunching over the desk, sewing the colorful pieces together
with clumsy stitches. When I finally finished the patchwork tie, it was far from
perfect—it was a little crooked and the colors were mismatched—but it was made
with my own hands and full of love.
Paragraph 2:
On Father's Day morning, I nervously handed the gift to Dad. He unfolded the
strange-looking tie and his eyes widened in surprise. For a moment, he was silent,
examining the familiar fabric of my soccer jersey and his old work shirt. Then, a big
smile spread across his face. He pulled me into a tight hug, saying, "It's the most
special gift I've ever received." He wore it proudly that day, telling everyone it was a
masterpiece. I realized that the value of a gift doesn't lie in its price, but in the heart
behind it.
