By the end of the class, you will be able to:
Summarize expert views on AI and robots’ future roles, benefits, and risks.
Use discourse markers and functional language to express opinions and discuss pros/cons.
Conduct a group debate to exchange and justify views on AI ethics and development.
Evaluate sci-fi concepts like Asimov’s Laws and form a critical stance on real-world AI issues.

Task 4: Logic Analysis
1. Future development: We’ll certainly see robots with more __________________, such as teaching or nursing.
2. Benefits: The main benefit would be greater _________________, giving us more time for other things.
3. Problems: But there would certainly be issues with them integrating into society. The more ____________ they become, the more _______________ they will be.
4. Solution: Above all, we need to think carefully about how to programme them to _________ us humans.
5. Core Thesis: I think the line between humans and robots will _____________ in the future.
Try to fill in the blanks.

Discussion
Do you know anything about Isaac Asimov and his famous Three Laws of Robotics What do you think of these laws
Discussion
What about the laws for AI use What will happen if we overuse AI
Recent reports show growing AI addiction among young people—some spend 12+ hours daily chatting with AI partners, abandoning real social interactions; others rely on AI for all decisions, losing independent thinking. This panel explores AI’s pros and cons through such real cases.
Background and Cases:
Topic:
AI Intimate Companionship:
Overusing AI violates human nature or not
Post-listening: Debate
Process:
Post-listening: Debate
1. Host introduces the background and topic
2. Both Sides State Opinions
3. Free Debate
4. Host concludes
Post-listening: Debate
Role Task Supporting Language
Host Summarize the debate and highlight key points. Pro side mentioned…
Con side argued that…
Pro Side Argue “Overusing AI violates human nature”: 1. Use cases like AI emotional addiction to prove “loss of real human connection.” 2. Link to textbook listening (e.g., “blurred human-robot lines”) to support views. As the recent news about AI emotional addiction showed…,
The expert in our listening said,
AI lacks emotional intelligence, so it can’t replace real human care…,
A major drawback of overusing AI is losing independent thinking.”

Con Side Argue “Overusing AI doesn’t violate human nature”: 1. Use cases like AI assisting the lonely to prove “AI is a tool for emotional comfort.” 2. Cite textbook listening (e.g., “AI improves efficiency”) to emphasize “human control over AI.” But the problem is not AI itself, it is…
However, AI also helps…, which is good for humanity.
The expert mentioned AI ….
The main benefit of AI is…
Post-listening: Debate
Peer--evaluation
Items Yes No
1 Did the speakers express their opinions clearly
2 Did the speakers use at least two discourse markers (e.g., however, therefore)
3 Did the speakers use the functional language for pros/cons/opinions
4 Was the speakers’ argument logical and easy to follow
Sample Debate:
Our team believes overusing AI violates human nature. First, as the recent case showed: a 16-year-old stopped talking to his parents because he thought his AI companion ‘understands him better.’ This is exactly what the expert in our listening warned—‘the line between humans and robots will be blurred.’ When we treat AI as real emotional partners, we lose the ability to deal with real human conflicts (like arguing with parents and solving problems together). Second, as we all know, robots lack emotional intelligence. AI’s ‘care’ is just programmed responses, but overusing it makes us forget what genuine empathy feels like—this is a violation of our human nature to connect with each other.
Pro Side
Sample Debate:
We disagree. The pro side’s case is about ‘misusing’ AI, not ‘overusing’ it. First, AI itself is a tool—just like a phone: using it 10 hours a day to study is helpful, but using it to play games is not. The problem is people’s choices, not the tool. Second, the expert in our listening also said AI brings ‘greater labour efficiency.’ For example, a single mom uses AI to plan meals and schedules—this saves her time to play with her kids. Isn’t this protecting human nature (spending time with family) Finally, it is widely recognized that AI helps with ‘safety and convenience.’ Overusing AI in these good ways doesn’t violate humanity—it makes our lives better.
Con Side
Sample Debate:
But many people use AI to write love letters and even break up with others—this makes human relationships cold! Doesn’t that violate nature
Free Debate
However, those people are just lazy—AI is just a helper. If you write the letter yourself and use AI to check grammar, that’s not a problem. The key is human control, not AI’s fault.
Yes. A recent survey said 30% of students can’t write a short essay without AI—this is losing independent thinking, which is part of human nature. As the expert warned, ‘we need to programme AI to protect us’—but overusing it makes us need protection from AI itself!
Sample Debate:
Conclusion
Part 4
Homework
Choose ONE of the following tasks:
1. Write a short summary (about 80 words) of Simon Phoenix’s main opinions from the interview.
2. Write an opinion paragraph (about 120 words) on Asimov’s Laws. Use at least three discourse markers and functional language from the lesson.
