When I came home on the first day of every school year, there was always a new book on my bed. My mother lived for tradition-especially on holidays. Knowing how much I loved to read, a new book was the perfect way to begin a new school year for me, and it was a reminder of how much she cared.
I carried my mother’s thoughtfulness into my own children’s lives. When it was time for them to start school, we began our own traditions. For us, it was all about our favorite pizza at dinner and High/Low, a game in which the kids shared their best and not-so-good memories of that first school day. They loved the game so much that they made me share mine.
The start of a new school year can be exciting or frightening for children, but creating a family tradition can help beat the first-day-of-school blues. Kristin Taylor of Murray, Kentucky, wishes her parents had recorded her childhood more, so she’s promised to do that for her kids. “I want to remember the moments that seem little but end up being the stories we retell as our kids grow up,” says Taylor, mother to three children.
Each year on the first school day, she photographs her children in their school uniforms. “I plan on giving them a book of those photos when they graduate,” she says.
The book “The Kissing Hand” has meant a lot to Marie Karns and her daughter, Lil. In the story, a baby raccoon (浣熊) cries to his mom that he doesn’t want to go to school. The mom passes down a tradition from her mom to her little boy. She kisses the inside of his palm (手心) so he can take her love to school with him. “We read the book every year and then I kissed the palm of her hand so she could take it to school with her,” says Karns.
Traditions create memories and one day, when the kids are older, they will be a great way to look back and remember those new beginnings.
24. What did the author think of the new book on her bed
A. It expressed her mother’s wish to teach.
B. It was an everyday gift for her.
C. It was a great way for her to start each school year.
D. It showed her mother’s love for reading.
25. What did the author’s children do on their first school day
A. They went out to a restaurant to have dinner.
B. They read a new book together.
C. They discussed how to start a new family tradition.
D. They described their experiences that day in a game.
26. What can we learn about Kristin Taylor
A. She values childhood memories. B. She works as a photographer.
C. She is strict with her children. D. She is good at telling stories.
27. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 5 refer to
A. A family tradition. B. Karns’ love. C. Lil’s gift. D. A children’s book.
C
A slow-paced Citywalk is becoming popular across China. Different from rushing past overcrowded tourist landmarks, the new trend has appeared as a popular choice to explore cities at a leisurely (悠闲的) pace.
Citywalk particularly attracts the younger generation who are often caught up in busy work schedules. As proved by the increasing popularity of hash tags (话题标签) like “City walk for vacation” on lifestyle sharing platform Xiaohongshu, with a staggering 465 million views and nearly 464,600 engagements, the trend is truly capturing unbelievable attention.
Citywalk can be a special guided trip for a small group of people, or simply a leisurely walk for one or two to explore new areas, sticking to the key point: avoiding famous scenic spots and big crowds to gain a more inclusive experience of the places you visit. It offers people a way to closely experience city culture and local traditions.
Citywalk routes are specially planned to the specific interests of both tourists and locals. For tourists, the focus is on sharing local customs and traditions, while for locals, discussions center around the city’s past, present, and future. The growing trend of Citywalk reflects a changing attitude towards life, embracing a warmer, more relaxed, and slower-paced lifestyle.
As Citywalk extends beyond first-tier cities like Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou, to second-and third-tier cities, it brings fresh opportunities for the tourism industry, in such areas as dining, shopping, and accommodation. Governments in Beijing and Shandong have recognized the potential (潜力) of Citywalk, including it into their action plans to promote cultural tourism and leisure activities. In Shanghai, public bus lines specially designed have been introduced for Citywalk participants.
“By slowing down and exploring the city streets, observing people’s lives, and immersing oneself in the context of museums and art galleries, one has the chance to embrace the pleasure of life,” said Luo Jun, a cultural tourism lover.
28. Why does the author mention the example of Xiaohongshu
A. To stress the importance of social media.
B. To illustrate the wide popularity of Citywalk.
C. To call on people to click to view Xiaohongshu.
D. To persuade readers to take part in “City walk for vacation”.
29. What’s the meaning of the underlined “staggering” in paragraph 2
A. Surprising. B. Frightening. C. Confusing. D. Embarrassing.
30. Which of the following is NOT Citywalk
A. A free walk to visit old hutong in Beijing.
B. A holiday group travel to tourist attractions of Qufu.
C. A trip for tourists to enjoy the teahouse culture in Chengdu.
D. A leisurely tour to experience city transformation of Guangzhou.
31. What have some governments done to promote Citywalk
A. Facilities in the museums have been improved.
B. Connection has been strengthened among cities.
C. More shopping centers have been built in third-tier cities.
D. Specific public transportation routes have been introduced.

If you take a walk through a Pittsburgh city park, you might come across a group of goats (山羊) eating poison ivy, one type of plants harmful to the ecosystem (生态系统). It is part of an experiment (实验).
By eating a lot of plants, goats greatly cut down the plants that need to be treated with herbicides (除草剂). Herbicides are traditionally used to clear out unwanted plants. There is glyphosate in many herbicides, which is reported to lead to cancer — a serious illness. Herbicides can remain in the soil and on plants, and during rain, they are washed into streams and rivers, further polluting the ecosystem.
There’s a need for goats all across the U.S., including California and New Mexico, where they help in wildfire prevention. Goats are sure-footed, and they enjoy climbing up and getting to the plants that are difficult for humans to clear away. They prefer woody plants, soft shoots and bushes (灌木丛) compared with other plant-eaters, such as cows, who are happy with grasses and low-lying plants. This makes goats perfect for clearing areas of high-growing woody plants that strengthen wildfires.
However, there are challenges in using goats. Their hairs are thin, which means they couldn’t work outside in cold winter. Goats can break seeds (种子) of harmful plants down in their stomachs, so they don’t spread the plants they’re eating, but this also makes them easy to suffer from stomach illnesses.
But when you think about the bigger picture, these problems are just small. One good thing that came from Pittsburgh’s goat experiment was the public interest it received. After the experiment finished, many other cities wanted to know how they could start a similar project. People, it turns out, also like goats. Park visitors love seeing the goats at work. Their presence brings a lot of joy and adds to the park experience!
32. Why are goats used in some city parks in the U.S.
A. To study their eating habits. B. To cut down the costs on herbicides.
C. To attract more tourists to the parks. D. To deal with harmful plants in a natural way.
33. What can we infer about goats from paragraph 3
A. They are no better at climbing than cows.
B. They prefer low-lying plants to woody bushes.
C. They help prevent wildfires by eating specific plants.
D. They are mainly raised in California and New Mexico.
34. What is the public’s attitude towards the goat project
A. Positive. B. Worried. C. Uncaring. D. Unclear.
35. Which of the following would be the best title for the text
A. The Disadvantages of Using Herbicides in Parks
B. How Goats Help Protect the Ecosystem in the U.S.
C. Different Ways to Prevent Wildfires Across the U.S.
D. How Pittsburgh’s Park Experiment Was Carried Out

When I was in senior high, my family was determined to settle down in New York. When we reached there, my parents ran a small grocery store downstairs from our house. I was a shy and quiet girl, so I had to start over and try to adapt to the big city life.
One sunny day, my school said there would be a fun event talent show to help the local food bank. Students were asked to show their special talents in the city hall on National Day. Everyone was excited and busy getting ready. I felt curious and wanted to join too, but I thought, “I don’t have any special skills.”
Days turned into weeks and the talent show was getting closer. I couldn’t stop feeling upset about it. One day, Alice, one of the most popular girls in my class, came to me while I was helping in the grocery store after school. “How about singing together in the talent show ” she smiled. “I heard you singing on the way home and I followed you here.” I couldn’t believe it! Alice, who was so nice and popular, noticed my little talent. Since Alice had such a beautiful voice, I felt really lucky.
“You two! The talent show for the food bank!” My mom came to us and her face lit up. “It’s a big chance!” Then she got an idea. “Why don’t you practice right now upstairs I believe you’ll be a perfect team.” She gave us an encouraging smile and added, “Just be confident.”
Alice and I started practicing almost every day after school. We thought of ideas together and worked on our act. As time went by, I felt really good about what we had prepared. But the day before the show, Alice called and said she had a bad stomachache and couldn’t perform. She apologized to me and encouraged me to finish the show on my own.

【答案】Para 1: Suddenly, the fears in my heart appeared. With butterflies in my stomach, I really didn’t know what to do. Without Alice singing with me, I was sure to make mistakes, and that wasn’t the plan! At that moment, my mom gently asked me what had happened. I showed my inner voice to her. Mom noticed that I was anxious. She said with a smile: “You’ve practiced a lot. You can do this by yourself.” A gentle wind blew through my face. It reminded me of the efforts I made, and with the encouragement of my mom, I tried to change my thoughts and practiced again and again. Finally came the big day, I felt confident, and I was ready for the performance alone.
Para 2: It was my turn to perform on the stage, I took a deep breath when I was standing on the stage. At first, I felt nervous, my voice was trembling. The stage was lit by spotlights. Recalling the words from my mom, I became more confident and sang more emotionally. The audience was amazed at my beautiful voice, some of them even on the edge of their seats. I made it! Tears of excitement welled up in my eyes as I finished the show. I realized that with some encouragement and confidence, I could overcome my fears and grow up.
