37-year-old Swedish actor Timothy Pilotti uses physical comedy to bring cultural exchanges to the stage. Peking Opera has been a game changer for him, which led him to China and shaped enthusiasm for cultural exchanges.
Pilotti had a childhood love for a Chinese film. “His films blended a lot of acrobatics (杂技) and comedy into the fight scenes,” Pilotti says. Unlike kung fu, primarily a martial art, Peking Opera caught his opinion as a theatrical form designed for the stage with unique way of moving and fighting.
Pilotti decided to become an actor at an early age, studying at acting schools and majoring in physical theater at a Finnish university. During the third year in university, he got the first opportunity to study Peking Opera in China. “Some of my classmates went to India, for example, but my dream was to go to China — it was a no-brainer,” he says. In 2009, he and two other students arrived at the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts in Beijing to study Peking Opera for six months.
Although he had no Chinese language skills or background in Peking Opera, teachers from the academy helped him grasp the essence of the performing art form through rigorous teaching and setting high standards.
Traditional Chinese stories enlighten Pilotti. He has created two theatre pieces in recent years, including a story about the Monkey King, the omnipotent (全能的) character from the novel Journey to the West. In the Monkey King, Pilotti embodies the character’s tangibly characteristics through Peking Opera movements, inspiring his young audience members to be themselves. “The Monkey King is a famous character with many adaptations, so the kids already know a bit about him. But, when they can see the character closely in the show, it can be a surprise.”
“My dream now is to do more cultural exchanges and maybe create a show where Chinese Peking Opera and Swedish actors perform together.” Pilotti says.
4. What can we know about Peking Opera and Pilotti from the text?
A. Peking Opera is a martial art in Pilotti’s eyes.
B. Peking Opera completely changed Pilotti’s life.
C. Pilotti didn’t like Peking Opera at all as a child.
D. Pilotti grew up with a Peking Opera background.
5. What did Pilotti mean by saying “it was a no-brainer” in paragraph 3?
A. It was a tough decision because he lacked Chinese skills.
B. It was an obvious choice as he dreamed of going to China.
C. He made the decision without any prior knowledge of China.
D. It required extensive brainpower to understand Peking Opera.
6. What kind of person is Pilotti?
A. Original and dedicated B. Adaptable and rigorous
C. Passionate and considerate D. Committed and conventional
7. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Monkey King: A Huge Success B. A Swede Acts on Passion for Peking Opera
C. A Swede’s Journey into Chinese Martial Arts D. Pilotti’s Childhood Dream: From Finland to China
C
AI could make it less necessary to learn foreign languages. That is good news for travellers, bad news for soulful connections.
Travel has long been a motivator for study — unless people start to feel AI tools offer a good-enough service. Some are concerned that apps are turning language acquisition into declining pursuit. Douglas Hofstadter, a writer, has argued that something important will disappear when people talk through machines. He describes giving a hesitant, difficult speech in Mandarin, which required a lot of work but offered a sense of achievement at the end. Who would show off taking a plane to the top of Mount Qomolangma?
Others are less worried. Most people do not move abroad or have the kind of sustained contact with a foreign culture that requires them to put in the work to become fluent. Nor do most people learn languages for the purpose of humanising themselves or training their brains. On their holiday, they just want a beer and pizza.
As AI translation becomes a more popular labour-saving tool, people will divide into two groups. There will be those who want to challenge their minds, put themselves in other cultures or force their thinking into new pathways. This lot will still take on language study, often aided by technology. Others will look at learning a new language with a mix of admiration and confusion, as they might with extreme endurance (忍耐力) sports: “Good for you, if that’s your thing, but a bit painful for my taste.”
But a focus on the learner alone misses the fundamentally social nature of language. It is a bit like analysing the benefits of close relationships to heart health but overlooking the inner value of those bonds themselves. When you try to ask directions in broken Japanese or make a joke in halting (结结巴巴的) German, you are making direct contact with someone. And when you speak a language well enough to tell a story with perfect timing or put subtle (微妙的) shadings on an argument, that connection is still deeper.
8. What is “taking a plane to the top of Mount Qomolangma” in Paragraph 2 compared to?
A. Using AI tools to do the translation. B. Doing the work that gives you satisfaction.
C. Making an effort to learn a new language. D. Studying a language aided by technology.
9. Which of the following will the “Others” in Paragraph 4 agree with?
A. People should stretch their minds in life.
B. AI translation tools offer a good service.
C. Extreme endurance sports are worth trying.
D. Language learning builds deep connections.
10. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Language learning benefits learners alone.
B. Language learning is of value to human health.
C. We should reflect on language learning methods.
D. We should adopt a new angle on language learning.
11. What is the author’s attitude towards AI translation tools?
A. Optimistic. B. Critical. C. Reserved. D. Unconcerned.
D
Not only does the use of plastic water bottles hurt your wallet, but it also causes pollution, wastes energy, and surprisingly wastes water. Only 23% of the plastic in America ends up in recycling bins, meaning over $1 billion worth of plastic is treated as rubbish a year. Recently, Skipping Rocks Lab has invented a kind of water bottle called Ooho.
Ooho is designed for large outdoor events where a large number plastic bottles are used and frequently left behind as litter. It’s a kind of convenient, clear water bottle that can either be drunk or eaten. To drink it, you can either get rid of the membrane (膜) or tear a hole in the membrane with your teeth to pour the water into your mouth. To eat it, you simply put the whole bottle in your mouth. It’s completely tasteless so you needn’t worry about any taste.
It aims for large outdoor events where tons of plastic bottles are used and frequently left behind as litter. Too much plastic is sure to do harm to the environment, which could account for the purpose of such a new invention.
The team has been working for the past two years to develop the technology and materials that are needed to produce Ooho. The price for an only bubble (泡状物) or a unit of bubbles has not been decided yet, but it costs about two cent to create a unit, which is cheaper than plastic bottles. The team has also been selling Ooho water bottles in London for the past six months.
Ooho is catching many people’s attention and has raised over $1 million in only three days. It’s mostly being sold at events at the moment to interest the buyers while the production machine is getting up and running. It’s quickly making a rise, so keep an eye out for these bottles of the future.
12. How is most plastic in America dealt with?
A. It is reused as new energy. B. It is buried under the ground.
C. It is thrown away as rubbish. D. It is applied to new technology.
13. What can we know about the Ooho?
A. It plans to be sold at a very low price.
B. It has some advantages over plastic bottles.
C. Suitable materials of making Ooho are hard to find.
D. Most people in London use Ooho instead of plastic bottles.
14. What’s the author’s attitude towards Ooho’s future?
A. Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Uninterested. D. Worried.
15. Who is probably the article written for?
A. Scientists. B. Experts. C. Environmentalists. D. The public.

When I was in middle school, my family moved to Seattle, where my parents started their new business — a small grocery store downstairs in my house. As a girl of shy and reserved nature, I had to take a fresh start to fit into the sophisticated city life.
One sunny day, my school announced an exciting event, a talent show for the local food bank. Students were encouraged to showcase their unique talents in front of the public in the city hall on National Day. A buzz of excitement filled the school as everyone began preparing for the big day. Deep down, I felt a spark of curiosity and a desire to participate. However, my self-doubt held me back, “I don’t have any special skills to share.”
Days turned into weeks, and the talent show drew closer. I couldn’t shake the upsetting feeling until one day Emma, one of the most popular girls in my class, came to me while I was helping in the grocery store after class. “How about singing together in the talent show?” she grinned. “I heard you singing a tune, along the way back home. I can’t help following you here.” Dear, I couldn’t believe my ears. Emma, with personality and popularity, acknowledged my little talent. Since Emma had the world’s prettiest voice, I felt like being favoured by fortune.
“You two? The talent show for the food bank?” My mum bent towards us and her face lit up. “Why not practise right now upstairs? I bet you’ll be a perfect match.” Winking at us, she seemed to know we were thinking alike.
Emma and I embarked on rehearsing almost every single day after school. We brainstormed, exchanged ideas and rehearsed the scene. As the days rolled by, I was feeling pretty good about our act. But the day before the performance, Emma called saying that she had an acute stomachache and was not in any shape to perform.

【答案】Dear English Club,
I’m Li Hua from Class 1, Senior 3. Learning about the news of photo collection, I would like to submit one of my favorite photos for consideration.
The photo taken during the Cultural Festival captures a group of dancing students dressed in stunning Hanfu, a traditional Chinese garment. The students’ faces are beaming with infectious smiles, reflecting their youth and enthusiasm. This picture?not only shows the colorful life of our school, but also lays the foundation for the cultural exchange between our two schools. I believe it will be a good vehicle for sister schools to learn more about our traditional culture.
I would appreciate it if the photo was included. Attached is the photo. Best wishes!
Yours.

【答案】
I was completely knocked out by the news. My heart sank, and I didn’t know what to do. “How can I perform alone?” I asked myself, tears welling up. But my mom said gently, “You’ve practiced so hard; don’t let fear stop you.” That night, I stayed up thinking about whether I should go on stage by myself. Finally, I decided that I would try, because it was for the food bank.
Finally came the big moment. As I walked onto the stage, my hands were shaking, and I could hardly breathe. I closed my eyes and remembered the days when Emma and I sang together, which gave me courage. When I opened my mouth, my voice came out clear and steady. The audience clapped warmly, and I felt proud of myself for the first time. What mattered most was not perfection, but that I dared to try.
