Instead of being addicted to smartphones and games, Zhang Yixuan prefers to spend his summer vacation walking in nature, meeting with little creatures like shrimps (虾) and crabs (蟹).
The 17-year-old boy went viral (走红) on Sina Weibo recently for his knowledge of biology, which led him to discover a new species of freshwater crabs of Sinolapotamon in 2022.
Zhang’s father, who was born in a rural area, loved catching fish and crabs himself at an early age, so Zhang was always taken outdoors by his parents to explore as much as possible and observe little creatures quietly without being interrupted. Now a grade 12 student at Yulin High School, Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, Zhang has dozens of “living treasures” that he has collected from the outdoors, including insects, fish, shrimps and crabs.
“This one is a species of Nanhaipotamon that I caught in a mountainous area,” said Zhang, pointing to a bright-colored crab moving its amusing eyes around. “You can see it just shed its shell.” There is also a row of empty bottles and jars in Zhang’s room to store his specimens (标本). “I can notice the small differences between two shrimps, and then I take them back to my room for further observation,” said Zhang.
It is the microscope his father bought him that makes the bedroom look more like a mini biology lab than anything else. It’s a place where Zhang can devote himself to identifying or observing the specimens of shrimps and crabs day and night. With the help of his microscope, Zhang concentrates on exploring the natural world. Sometimes he spends hours simply examining a piece of fish scale, the leg of a crab or the antenna of an insect. He often works so late that his parents have to force him to go to bed.
“I’m often amazed by what I see while placing these tiny and fragile things under the microscope. No matter how unimportant an insect is, each life is so delicately and uniquely organized,” said Zhang.
4. What made Zhang popular on Sina Weibo
A. His meeting with shrimps and crabs. B. His videos of outdoor adventures.
C. His discovery of a new type of crab. D. His collection of “living treasures”.
5. What inspired Zhang’s interest in exploring nature
A. His father’s early job. B. A crab he once caught.
C. His school’s field trips. D. His childhood experiences.
6. What does Paragraph 5 mainly talk about
A. Zhang’s tools for observations. B. Zhang’s achievements in biology.
C. Zhang’s mini biology lab at home. D. Zhang’s addiction to his specimens.
7. Which of the following best describes Zhang
A. Honest and energetic. B. Outgoing and adventurous.

Race walking shares many fitness benefits with running, research shows, while most likely contributing to fewer injuries. It does, however, have its own problem.
Race walkers are conditioned athletes. The longest track and field event at the Summer Olympics is the 50-kilometer race walk, which is about five miles longer than the marathon. But the sport’s rules require that a race walker’s knees stay straight through most of the leg swing and one foot remain in contact (接触) with the ground at all times. It’s this strange form that makes race walking such an attractive activity, however, says Jaclyn Norberg, an assistant professor of exercise science at Salem State University in Salem, Mass.
Like running, race walking is physically demanding, she says, According to most calculations, race walkers moving at a pace of six miles per hour would burn about 800 calories(卡路里) per hour, which is approximately twice as many as they would burn walking, although fewer than running, which would probably burn about 1,000 or more calories per hour.
However, race walking does not pound the body as much as running does, Dr. Norberg says. According to her research, runners hit the ground with as much as four times their body weight per step, while race walkers, who do not leave the ground, create only about 1.4 times their body weight with each step.
As a result, she says, some of the injuries associated with running, such as runner’s knee, are uncommon among race walkers. But the sport’s strange form does place considerable stress on the ankles and hips, so people with a history of such injuries might want to be cautious in adopting the sport. In fact, anyone wishing to try race walking should probably first consult a coach or experienced racer to learn proper technique, she says. It takes some practice.
8. Why are race walkers conditioned athletes
A. They must run long distances.
B. They are qualified for the marathon.
C. They have to follow special rules.
D. They are good at swinging their legs.
9. What advantage does race walking have over running
A. It’s more popular at the Olympics.
B. It’s less challenging physically.
C. It’s more effective in body building.
D. It’s less likely to cause knee injuries.
10. What is Dr. Norberg’s suggestion for someone trying race walking
A. Getting experts’ opinions.
B. Having a medical checkup.
C. Hiring an experienced coach.
D. Doing regular exercises.
11. Which word best describes the author’s attitude to race walking
A. Skeptical. B. Objective.
C. Tolerant. D. Conservative.
D
The island of Bali is a very popular vacation spot in Indonesia. Bali has beautiful beaches with white sand and crystal clear waters. But because there are so many tourists, this often means there is an increase of plastic, garbage and waste left on Bali’s beaches. Thankfully, there is now an amazing technological advancement called the BeBot Smart Beach Cleaning Robot, which can take care of this exact problem.
The BeBot robot went to market in May of 2025. It operates with very limited human intervention and is solar-powered, making it eco-friendly. The robot collects waste and trash from the beaches very efficiently and quickly. However, these robots are expensive, involving the high maintenance cost in the long run. The local government stresses that the BeBot robot is an innovative and effective tool but the responsibility of environmental protection still lies on people. Every person must be careful with their trash and know how to deal with their waste appropriately and responsibly.
The BeBot robot represents more than just clean beaches, which is an important goal in and of itself. It also shows that the people in charge of Bali have sustainability as a goal, and that they care about wasting less.
Bali’s waste management strategy is really working, and they have even been able to recently close their biggest open landfill (填埋场), Suwung TPA. In addition to that huge achievement, since the island province began using the robots to clean beaches, Bali has been able to successfully reduce waste in their landfills from 80% to 20%. The trash is now being sorted better, which allows the items to be recycled, reused or processed in more sustainable ways instead. And what’s even more impressive is that they are on track to reduce it down to 5%.
The BeBot robot indicates hope, innovation, creativity and efficiency. And if you are ever in Bali and get to see it in action, or even if you see it just on video, remember: People have the ability to live on a cleaner and less wasteful planet. And any challenge can be tackled with a bit of creativity and innovation, one step, or wave, at a time.
12. What is the local government’s attitude towards the use of the BeBot robot in Bali
A. Overly reliant. B. Sensibly supportive.
C. Strongly opposed. D. Totally indifferent.
13. What deeper meaning does the BeBot robot hold beyond beach cleaning
A. The potential for complete removal of waste.
B. Indonesia’s leadership in robotic technology.
C. Bali’s commitment to sustainable waste management.
D. The advantage of solar power resources over traditional ones.
14. Which might be one of Bali’s future waste management goals
A. To focus on developing advanced robots.
B. To achieve near-zero waste going to landfills.
C. To share the waste management technology globally.
D. To close the largest landfill for its environment impact.
15. What might be the best title for the text
A. BeBot: The Fast Development of Clean Technology
B. BeBot: The Link between Tourism and Environment
C. BeBot: A Green Hope for Bali’s Waste Problem
D. BeBot: The Key to Promoting Bali’s Tourism

Overtourism Is For Real: How Can You Help
Travel promotes understanding, expands our minds, makes us better people, and boosts local economies and communities, but the rapid growth of travel has led to overtourism in certain regions and destinations. ___16___ Certainly not. The loss of what travel offers would be unacceptable in today’s world. Here are some tips on making wise decisions to minimize pressure on the places we visit and improve our experience.
●Choose mindfully. Overvisited destinations are that way for a reason: they’re special. With so many online posts featuring the same places, it’s easy to feel like you’re missing out. Go somewhere only when the landscape, culture or food deeply draws you. ___17___
●Get creative. The best way to ease pressure on over-touristed destinations is to go somewhere else. Though overtourism is described as a problem affecting the entire world, it’s actually concentrated to a small number of extremely popular spots. That means you have tons of less-visited options to choose from. ___18___ Why not try a regional alternative or check out a popular destination’s lesser-known sights
●___19___ Minimize impact and maximize experience by skipping major holidays or rush hour. You’ll compete with fewer tourists, save money, experience a different side of a popular place, and boost the economy when tourism is traditionally slower.
Visiting a place that others call home is a privilege (荣幸). Do your part to preserve what makes a destination special in the first place. ___20___ You may be amazed how much closer you’ll feel to the people there.
A. Visit during off-peak times.
B. So, should we stop traveling
C. Travel for you and no one else.
D. Can overtourism be avoided then
E. You can still find relatively undiscovered places.
F. You’ll find yourself virtually alone, or close to it.
G. Consider giving back to the communities you’re visiting.

It was the day of the big cross-country run. Students from seven different primary schools in and around the small town were warming up and walking the route(路线)through thick evergreen forest.
I looked around and finally spotted David, who was standing by himself off to the side by a fence. He was small for ten years old. His usual big toothy smile was absent today. I walked over and asked him why he wasn’t with the other children. He hesitated and then said he had decided not to run.
What was wrong He had worked so hard for this event!
I quickly searched the crowd for the school’s coach and asked him what had happened. “I was afraid that kids from other schools would laugh at him,” he explained uncomfortably. “I gave him the choice to run or not, and let him decide.”
I bit back my frustration(懊恼). I knew the coach meant well—he thought he was doing the right thing. After making sure that David could run if he wanted, I turned to find him coming towards me, his small body rocking from side to side as he swung his feet forward.
David had a brain disease which prevented him from walking or running like other children, but at school his classmates thought of him as a regular kid. He always participated to the best of his ability in whatever they were doing. That was why none of the children thought it unusual that David had decided to join the cross-country team. It just took him longer—that’s all. David had not missed a single practice, and although he always finished his run long after the other children, he did always finish. As a special education teacher at the school, I was familiar with the challenges David faced and was proud of his strong determination.

【答案】Our oceans, our responsibility
June 8th was named by the UN in 2009 as World Oceans Day. When it comes to ocean, its pollution is becoming more and more serious. World Ocean Day, falling on June 8th, is aimed at raising awareness of ocean conservation.
Ocean plays a key role in our world. Not only does ocean offer us sufficient food, but also it maintains the balance of nature. Thus, it is imperative to protect ocean. First of all, what we can do is to place importance on our daily actions. For example, garbage can’t be thrown into ocean. What’s more, we can also hand out leaflets to call on more people to protect the ocean. The more people are involved, the better the ocean environment is.
All in all, it is high time that we devoted ourselves to protecting ocean. To protect ocean is to protect ourselves.
【答案】We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn’t look at me. I said gently and quietly, “No one can change your mind, except yourself. If you desire to challenge yourself, there is nothing to do with others’ thoughts.” He sat still with a deep breath. “You have a full preparation before this event, which is the most important reason why you show up here”, I added with a sincere tone. Hearing my words, David turned to me tremblingly with tears spilling out of his eyes and expressed he had made a firm determination to finish the cross-country run. His coach heard what David said and gave me a look—the kind that was more determined than anyone else’s.
I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners. The race started. It seemed that the runway was extremely long for young children, not to mention a child with a brain disease. David insisted on running as if he had forgotten all his weaknesses, though he was tripped over within the a few kilometers. It didn’t take long before he picked himself up again and continued his mission. Classmates all appeared on the racing track, cheering for him. “Come on! You can make it! We are proud of you!” they shouted enthusiastically. To everyone’s joy, he reached the final line and ranked the 20th. It was no more important whether he won the first place or not. It was his brave heart and strong faith that could make something unusual happen finally.
