There are always some places that seem to go well beyond our earthly expectations. These incredible locations are similar to those in science fictions, transporting us to otherworldly grounds.
Cappadocia, Turkey
Located in central Anatolia, the area is known for its unusual rock structures known as “fairy chimneys.” These columns, produced by volcanoes and gradual damage from water over millions of years, give the region its otherworldly appearance.
Tsingy de Bemaraha, Madagascar
The remarkable sight attracts visitors with its unique limestone structures. Stretching over 1,500-square kilometers, Tsingy, which means “where one cannot walk barefoot,” contains sharp surfaces and underground caves, forming a dramatic landscape. Adventurers can explore the park via bridges and ladders to witness the breathtaking beauty of this natural wonder.
Zhangye Danxia National Geological Park, China
Zhangye Danxia National Geological Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site in China, contains landforms that are one of nature’s masterpieces. Its vivid, rainbow-colored rock structures have been shaped by wind and water erosion over millions of years. The layers of red, orange and yellow create a never-before-seen landscape for many people that looks as if it were on a different planet altogether.
Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
Located within the remarkable landscapes of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, the cenotes present a place of otherworldly beauty. These natural sinkholes, created by the collapse of their limestone base, open up into charming underground caves and shining pools. Rays of sunlight dance through the openings in the walls, lighting up the waters below, telling a tale of nature’s artistry.
Visiting these places not only provides a visual feast, but also reminds us of the incredible wonder here on Earth.

Nicholas Dames has taught Literature Humanities at Columbia University since 1998. He loves the job, but it has changed. Over the past decade, students have become bewildered by the thought of finishing multiple books a semester. This development puzzled Dames until a first-year student shared how challenging she had found the early assignments. The student said that at her public high school, she was only assigned passages, but not entire books. “My jaw dropped,” Dames told me. This helped explain the change: It’s not that they don’t want to read. It’s that they don’t know how.
Failing to complete a 14-line poem without giving in to distraction (干扰) suggests one familiar explanation for the decrease in reading ability: smartphones. Teenagers are constantly drawn by their devices. Reading books, even for pleasure, can’t compete with TikTok. In 1976, about 40 percent of high-school seniors said they had read at least six books for fun in the previous year, compared with 11.5 percent who hadn’t read any. By 2022, those percentages had flipped.
But high school kids appear to be encountering fewer and fewer books in the classroom as well. Since the ability to read an entire book is difficult to assess, teachers focus on skills that are easier to measure. They have shifted from books to short passages, followed by questions about the author’s main idea, just as standardized reading-comprehension tests do.
Faced with this situation, many college professors feel they have no choice but to assign less reading and lower their expectations. This means students will miss out on the mental development that comes from reading entire books. Reading enlarges your sympathies. Deep reading — sustained focus on a text — encourages a number of valuable mental habits, including critical thinking and self-reflection, in ways that skimming or reading in short passages does not.
I can imagine worse preparations for the trials, and thrills, of Literature Humanities. But we’ve never forgotten the originals. To understand the human condition, and to appreciate humankind’s greatest achievements, you still need to read The Iliad — all of it.
4. What does the underlined word “bewildered” mean in paragraph 1
A. Delighted. B. Confused. C. Satisfied. D. Relieved.
5. Why does the author list numbers in paragraph 2
A. To highlight the rise of social media.
B. To clarify the problems of smartphones.
C. To illustrate the change in reading methods.
D. To demonstrate the decline in book reading.
6. What is a result of professors assigning less reading
A. The shortage of learning motivation. B. The reduction of genuine sympathies.
C. The loss of cognitive growth opportunities. D. The restriction of personal academic progress.
7. What is the author’s attitude towards reading originals
A. Supportive. B. Doubtful. C. Cautious. D. Indifferent.

In our hyper-connected world of social media, there’s a refreshing cure — one that’s good for your mental health, reduces stress and anxiety and even helps your immune system: being in nature. While any time spent outdoors is advantageous, there’s a “prescription” that can help you get the most benefits. It’s spending 20 minutes in your local park three days per week, five hours in a nature preserve each month and three days immersed in the backcountry once a year. It’s called the 20-5-3 rule, and it’s a science-backed formula that could revolutionize how we think about outdoor time.
Florence Williams, author of Nature Fix and Heartbreak, tells Yahoo Life: “Having a general guideline like this could be helpful to some people. It’s worth noting that it’s important for each of us to tune into what we need in a particular week or year.” Williams explain that when we’re experiencing extra stress, pain or heartbreak, we might need more time in everyday nature spaces or in deep wilderness. “The emerging science is an opportunity for us to notice how we feel when we’re outside, to recognize which elements of nature we most respond to and to prioritize doing the things that give us the restoration we need,” she says.
While spending time in your local park is beneficial, it requires s more frequent exposure to achieve the same stress-reducing benefits as a deep wilderness experience. That’s because in urban green spaces, we’re often still tied to our devices and surrounded by city sounds. It can be more like “nature-lite” if we’re not intentional about the time we spend outdoors.
The numbers back this up. Research shows that while a 20-minute walk in nature lowers stress hormones, these levels often bounce back within hours in urban pare this to multi-day wilderness experiences, where studies have documented health benefits lasting up to a month.
8. How does the author introduce the topic
A. By giving a definition. B. By listing numbers.
C. By offering an example. D. By describing a phenomenon.
9. What do we know about the 20-5-3 rule
A. People may practice the rule flexibly.
B. The rule was created by Florence Williams.
C. Everyone must follow the rule without any change.
D. People should spend 5 hours in a local park every month.
10. Why does the author say urban green spaces are like “nature-lite”
A. There are no real natural things.
B. The air quality there is much worse.
C. Various distractions reduce the effect.
D. People don’t like to stay there for long.
11. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the text
A. To advocate people to get close to nature.
B. To suggest a new treatment to mental illness.
C. To provide a prescription to improve physical health.
D. To recommend an approach to reducing stress and anxiety.
D
Named as the Oxford Word of the Year for 2024, “brain rot” is defined as the supposed decline of a person’s mental state as a result of watching too much “unimportant of unchallenging” content online. While often used jokingly, a new study from Tianjin Normal University suggests there may be some truth to it.
Researchers examined the brains of 111 students, all regular viewers of short videos, and found that those most attached to them had noticeable differences in brain structure. They had increased grey matter in the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), the brain area linked to decision-making and emotional regulation, and in the cerebellum, which plays a role in movement and emotions. The researchers proposed that constant consumption of feeds might strengthen brain-related pathways making the habit more deeply rooted.
A second examination showed increased synchronization (同步) in multiple brain areas, including those involved in self-control and self-reflection. This could indicate difficulties disengaging from videos and increased social comparison. Participants who scored higher on a questionnaire measuring “envy” also showed stronger links between video addiction and brain differences, suggesting that either “envy” fuels social media use or that extended video-viewing promotes “envy”.
Despite the alarming implications, the study has limitations. Similar concerns about technology’s impact on the brain have surfaced before, such as claims that digital media have posed an existential threat. Yet, no conclusive evidence has proven these fears true. Professor Peter Etchells argues there’s no solid science showing short videos uniquely harm the brain.
A major shortcoming of the study is its cross-sectional design. If the goal were to prove that watching hours of short videos harms the brain, a more effective approach would be to examine participants’ brains before and after they consumed different amounts of the supposedly harmful content. Yet the study was cross-sectional, meaning it only relied on data from a single time point. There was no before-and-after comparison to show cause and effect. Thus, a healthier approach is to reflect on media habits, making mindful choices while appreciating the benefits of technology.
12. What is “brain rot” according to paragraph 1
A. A medically confirmed illness. B. A rising fashion trend among youth.
C. A widely recognized cultural term. D. A growing awareness of short videos.
13. Which is one of the main findings of the research
A. Reduced capacity for social comparison.
B. Weakened emotional regulation abilities.
C. Damaged structures in movement-related areas.
D. Increased grey matter in decision-making regions.
14. The author questions the study’s design primarily for its__________.
A. overemphasis on envy-related data B. insufficiency for sample diversity
C. failure to establish cause and effect D. reliance on subjective measurements
15. Which is the best title for the text
A. Brain Rot: Real Threat or Overstated Fear
B. Social Media: Mental Stimulation or Brain Harm
C. Why “Brain Rot” Became Word of the Year
D. How Social Media Rewires the Human Brain

It was a gloomy afternoon, with dark clouds hanging low in the sky, making the already old-fashioned campus seem even more deserted. After the last class of the day, I walked across the campus with my close classmate, Tom. As we neared a quiet corner beside the old library, a series of faint meowing sounds (猫叫声) pierced the stillness. Our curiosity piqued, we exchanged a glance and immediately traced the source of the noise.
Behind a messy stack of old boxes, we discovered a minuscule, emaciated cat. Its once-soft fur was now caked with dirt, and its small body trembled ever so slightly, a clear indication that it had suffered from days of hunger and cold. A profound sense of pity welled up within us. Tom bent down slowly, his hand extended gently, his voice soft as he tried to lead the frightened animal out. At first, the cat was frightened, its wide-eyed gaze fixed on us in fear. But gradually, after a few moments of cautious sniffing (嗅), it timidly stepped out from its hiding spot.
We knew we couldn’t abandon this helpless creature. Tom proposed taking it to the school infirmary (医务室), believing the school doctor might be able to assess its condition. I nodded in instant agreement, yet a tinge of worry crept in as we pondered how the school authorities would respond to us bringing a cat into the infirmary.
Just at that moment, Lily, a classmate with a kind heart and a skill of animal care, happened to pass by. The moment she laid eyes on the pitiful cat in our arms, her expression softened. She informed us that she had experience in dealing with stray (走失的) animals and eagerly offered her assistance. With Lily on board, our determination to save the cat grew tenfold. We held the cat gently and made our way towards the infirmary, filled with hope and a touch of nervousness.

【答案】例文
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am applying for the activity planner for the coming-of-age ceremony falling on Jan 15th.
This once-in-a-lifetime ceremony, I believe, is a golden opportunity to impress upon us students the significance of shouldering responsibility and fulfilling our obligation as a young adult. To make this event memorable, firstly, we will invite the principal to deliver an inspiring speech articulating the real meaning of being a mature grown-up. Then, we will walk through the Longmen, a typical signifier of adulthood, with our parents, with photos taken to mark this special occasion.
Hope my creativity above will land me this position.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
【答案】Paragraph 1:
On reaching the infirmary, the school doctor greeted us with a surprised look. However, after listening to our earnest plea and the cat’s tragic situation, her expression softened. She quickly got to work, conducting a thorough examination. She told us the cat was severely malnourished and had a respiratory infection. While treating the cat, she patiently explained to us the care it needed. We listened intently, absorbing every word, grateful for her expertise. With the doctor’s professional treatment, the cat’s breathing gradually became more stable, and we felt a glimmer of hope.
Paragraph 2:
Over the next few days, we took turns to take care of the cat. We divided the tasks among us. I was in charge of bringing fresh food and water every morning, Tom cleaned the cat’s temporary shelter, and Lily monitored its health closely. As the days passed, the cat’s condition improved remarkably. Its fur became smoother, and its eyes sparkled with newfound vitality. It even started to play with a small ball we brought for it. This experience not only saved a life but also strengthened the bond between us classmates. We realized that with unity and compassion, we could make a difference.
