Best Art Exhibitions to See in 2025
2025 promises to be another year for great art exhibitions. We round up the best from the USA and Europe.
Caspar David Friedrich: The Soul of Nature
2024 was really Caspar David Friedrich’s year — the 250th anniversary of his birth — so the MET is a bit slow. Last year, all his works were on show in various exhibitions around Germany. The gallery is waiting to get their pick of them, showing 75 works from 30 collections. Unbelievably, this is Friedrich’s first-ever major show in the United States.
Suzanne Valado
This exhibition has already done the rounds, having started in Metz in 2023 and visited Nantes and Barcelona in the last 12 months. The Centre Pompidou exhibition will be divided into different themes. It will also show her works with the works of less-known artists who lived and worked in the same age like Juliette Roche, Georgette Agutte, and Jacqueline Marval.
Elizabeth Catlett: A Black Revolutionary Artist
The NGA is doing a full review of Catlett’s career, with 150 prints, sculptures, and rare examples of her painting. The exhibition is currently showing at Brooklyn Museum (until June 19, 2025) and it will later travel to Chicago. Taking a time-ordered approach, the show tells a life of protest and campaigning for social justice and an artistic practice that adopted a new form.
From Odesa to Berlin
These might not be the most famous paintings on show in Europe, but it is probably the most touching exhibition. 60 pictures of Ukrainian refugees (难民) leaving their homes will be shown together with works from Berlin collections. This includes religious art, still life and landscape organized into a series of nine themes. The idea is to stress the historic connections between Ukraine and Western Europe.
1. What can we know about the MET’s Friedrich exhibition?
A. It lasts a month. B. It is held in Germany.
C. It is Friedrich’s first show. D. It displays Friedrich’s 75 works.
2. Where can visitors appreciate works related to social justice on July 25th?
A. Chicago. B. Berlin. C. Brooklyn. D. Barcelona.
3. What is a feature of From Odesa to Berlin?
A. It includes 60 historical paintings. B. It helps Ukrainian refugees escape.
C. It groups works into various themes. D. It presents a symbol of religious art.

In my early teens, I was once given a film camera as a gift. On receiving it, I jumped on my bike, headed to Wimbledon Common and took photos, just for me: photos of trees and wildlife. I was out all day. On my way home I spotted a tree lit up by street lighting and tried to capture its splendour (壮观). Rushing home, I popped the exposed film in a special little envelope and sent it off to a photography store, desperate to see how it came out. I took many photos then and loved the fact that when I processed the film I got back colour photos which froze the precious moments, gently encouraging the hobby and the payments for processing.
As I grew into adulthood, that simple, deep happiness gradually faded away. One weekend when I was busy answering the work calls, my eyes caught a box in the corner of the room. I suddenly felt a sense of sadness. The stress growing over these years had pushed the camera from beside my pillow to the box in the corner. I thought I needed a change.
I took out the camera and dusted it down. It was a great joy that it still worked. I bought a new film and took the camera everywhere I went. Now it is always on hand to accompany me on journeys, to allow me time to myself. Even if the day is full and busy, I can seize some moments for myself to take photos, to observe the world around me.
The wall of my room now holds all my camera equipment on display, along with photos I’ve taken. To me, the room represents how I’ve found happiness: by reconnecting to the younger part of myself I laid aside, by allowing room in my life for pleasure to exist, and by creating an environment that allows opportunities for delight.
4. What was the main purpose of the author using the camera in his youth?
A. To develop professional skills. B. To capture the beauty of nature.
C. To document his school life. D. To participate in photography competitions.
5. How did the author’s feelings towards the camera change as he grew up?
A. His interest in photography deepened. B. He felt the camera was just a burden.
C. He gradually forgot about the camera. D. He longed to purchase more advanced equipment.
6. How has the author’s life been since he reused the camera?
A. Plain. B. Delightful. C. Desperate. D. Dull.
7. Why does the author display camera equipment and photos in his room?
A. To remind him of his happy time. B. To bring happiness to his family.
C. To show off his achievement. D. To record his prizes in younger years.

For sports fans, attending a live match with their favorite team playing is exciting. For the visually challenged, however, this usually means giving up the commentary (解说) from TV broadcasts and relying on their companions to know what’s going on in the game. Hoping to change the situation, OneCourt has created a clever tactile (触觉的) device, aiming to make the excitement of live sports accessible to all.
The device, a tactile display, is designed to sit comfortably on the user’s lap. Its surface is a faithful copy of the game field or court, with the plays being turned into vibrations (震动) that fans can follow with their fingertips. As the ball moves across the court or field, the corresponding vibration on the device also shifts position.
Currently, the device supports three popular sports: basketball, football, and baseball, the latter of which was put to the test during the MLB’s 2024 All-Star Weekend, proving its functionality and reliability. OneCourt explains that they collect ball and player positional data tracked at the league level. This data is then translated into a special tactile language, which is presented as trackable vibrations on the device’s surface.
Recently, the Portland Trail Blazers became the first NBA team to partner with OneCourt. The device is available at home games at no additional cost. The team welcomed blind Paralympian Anthony S. Ferraro to show the device at work. While using it, the athlete was excited to discover how quickly the players were moving on the court. “This was a life-changing experience, and I can’t wait until devices like this are applied across the board in all sports and events,” Ferraro said. The device is of great help to the visually challenged following a game at home, but it really shines at an in-stadium event, where fans can take in the live game in front of them and feel the energy of like-minded sports fans.
8. Why does the author mention “commentary from TV broadcasts” in paragraph 1?
A. To show the awkward situation the visually challenged face.
B. To introduce the popularity that TV sports broadcasts enjoy.
C. To highlight the role live sports commentary plays in a match.
D. To compare different ways that people follow sports games.
9. What is special about the tactile device’s surface design?
A. It connects to smartphones for voice guidance.
B. It adjusts its shape according to different sports rules.
C. It displays real-time player data through visual signals.
D. It copies the game field and uses vibrations to present plays.
10. What does the example of MLB’s 2024 All-Star Weekend show?
A. The device is adaptable to many sports.
B. Baseball enjoys a growing popularity among fans.
C. The device is considered both practical and reliable.
D. More data support is badly needed from sports leagues.
11. What can be inferred about the tactile device from the last paragraph?
A. It requires further development to support more sports.
B. It may become more widely used in various sports events.
C. It is currently available at most NBA teams’ home games.
D. It will soon replace TV commentary for the visually challenged.
D
For many years, school children in the US have taken on “field trips” to cultural institutions such as museums of art. Educators arrange them in the belief that schools exist not only to teach economically useful skills, but also to produce civilized young people who appreciate the art and culture. While there are parents who will take their children to cultural places in their free time, there are plenty of other children who will never have this kind of opportunity unless schools offer it. So you could say that taking school students on field trips is a means of giving everyone equal access to their cultural heritage.
However, the attitude towards field trips in recent years is changing, with the number of tours organized for school groups falling significantly in museums all around the country. The most obvious reason is the issue of finance. Because there are increasing demands on their funds, after all, computers and sports facilities aren’t cheap, schools are forced to make a difficult choice about how to spend the limited money they have. Faced with this dilemma, field trips are an obvious thing to cut since they are seen by many as a luxury.
Additionally, the nature of these field days is also changing. Schools increasingly use trips to amusement parks or sporting events as a treat for students rather than an opportunity for cultural learning. This shift could have a basis in generational differences between teachers’ reasons for organizing days out of school. A recent survey conducted among 500 Arkansas teachers showed that older teachers were significantly more likely to take the primary purpose of a field trip as a learning experience than younger teachers, who view it as fun.
Some evidence shows the trend of fewer trips may have a negative effect on children’s development. A research led by Jay Greene at Arkansas University found that students who received a tour of an art museum greatly improved their knowledge of art and the ability to think critically about art. They also display stronger historical interest and were more likely to visit cultural places in the future. The researchers warn that if schools cut field trips or switch to less educational destinations, valuable opportunities to broaden and enrich children’s learning experiences are lost.
12. What is the initial purpose of field trips to cultural institutions?
A. To leach students useful skills in economics.
B. To make every student exposed to art and culture.
C. To educate students to preserve cultural heritage.
D. To encourage parents to take their children there.
13. Which factor most probably leads to the trend of fewer field trips?
A. The drop in school funds. B. Students’ demand for fun.
C. The dilemma of school finance. D. Teachers’ generational differences.
14. What does the underlined phrase “This shift” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The switch from old generations to young generations.
B. The switch from sporting events to cultural experiences.
C. The change from an opportunity to learn to a treat to entertain.
D. The change from educational destinations to luxurious attractions.
15. What can be inferred about field trips from the research by Jay Greene?
A. Students are rewarded with more cultural knowledge.
B. Amusement parks enrich children’s learning experiences.
C. Cutting field trips is critical to the future of the museum.
D. Field trips guarantee better future academic performance.

Ever since I can remember, I’ve always been shy. The thought of talking to new people or being the center of attention made my heart race and palms sweat. As I entered middle school, this shyness turned into social anxiety, making it even harder for me to interact with my peers.
One day, during a class presentation, I stumbled (结巴) over my words and everyone laughed. I felt extremely ashamed. That only made my social anxiety worse, and I started avoiding speaking in front of others.
My parents noticed my struggle and suggested I talk to our family therapist (治疗专家), Dr. Smith. At first, I hesitated, but I knew I needed help. During our first period, Dr. Smith explained that social anxiety was a common issue and there were ways to overcome it. She recommended some effective treatments. Over the next few months, I attended weekly treatment with Dr. Smith. Slowly but surely, I began to feel more confident in myself. As part of the treatment, Dr. Smith encouraged me to take part in school events and clubs that interested me. It was terrifying to put myself out there, but I knew it was necessary for my growth.

答案】A few days later, a school speech contest was to be held. Dr. Smith had encouraged me to participate, so I decided to give it a try. I prepared for weeks, practicing my speech in front of a mirror and rehearsing my lines. On the day of the contest, my heart was pounding, but I took a deep breath and walked onto the stage. I looked out into the audience and saw my classmates, friends, and family all there to support me. I smiled and began my speech.
After the contest, I went to visit Dr. Smith happily. She congratulated me on my speech and said that I had made great progress. She also reminded me that social anxiety was still there, but that it was now under control. She encouraged me to keep up the good work and to continue to face my fears.
