In a bright and active neighbourhood, there were two neighbours with very different personalities. One was Mr. Jenkins, an old man who always seemed angry and unhappy about everything in his neighbourhood. Next to his house lived the young and lively Miller family with 10-year-old son named Ben.
One sunny day, Ben wanted to set up a lemonade stand (柠檬水摊位) in his front yard. He was really excited because he thought he could make some money and have a good time. But Mr. Jenkins didn’t like it. Shadow puppetry(皮影戏) is an ancient form of art in China. It has a long history of more than 2,000 years. People used to call it “the business of the shadow” because the shows are made by the shadows of puppets.
The puppets (木偶) in shadow puppetry are usually made of leather or paper. They are carefully cut and painted to look like people, animals or other things. Artists control the puppets behind a white cloth. When there is light behind the cloth, the shadows of the puppets appear on the cloth. Then the artists make the puppets “act” to tell stories.
The stories in shadow puppetry are very interesting. They can be about history, legends or daily life. People, especially children, love to watch these shows because the puppets seem so lively. In the past, shadow puppetry was one of the most popular forms of entertainment (娱乐). During festivals or special events, people would gather together to watch shadow puppet shows.
However, shadow puppetry is facing some problems today. Fewer and fewer young people are interested in learning this art. Also, with the development of new forms of entertainment like movies and TV shows, shadow puppet shows are not as popular as before. But many artists are trying their best to keep this ancient art alive. They go to schools to teach students about shadow puppetry and put on shows in different places.
Shadow puppetry is not only an art form but also a part of Chinese culture. We should learn more about it and help it develop.

Mr Worth liked spending time with his grandson, Shawn. He enjoyed teaching him some of the things he may not be taught in school.
One day, Shawn told his grandfather about a class science project that he was very excited about.
Each student was going to grow a pot of bean plants. When the plants grew big and strong, they could be transplanted into the school garden. All the students wanted to grow the strongest and best bean plant.
Shawn showed his grandfather the bean seeds. He explained that his teacher had taught them how to make the seeds grow. First, they put the seeds on a wet paper towel. Then, they put them in a warm place. When the seeds sprout(发芽), they are ready to be transplanted into a pot.
After listening to his grandson, Mr Worth said, “I want to show you one more thing about growing plants.”
“When I was a boy, my father showed me how to grow strong plants,” he continued. “When the plant is starting out, you put some weight on it.” Shawn looked at his grandfather in surprise.
“Doesn’t the weight prevent the bean from growing ” he asked.
“No, of course not. This way, the bean plant will be strong and healthy. If you give it everything it wants, it will grow too fast and be weak. It will fall over when a big wind blows.”

第八部分 书面表达
Dear teachers and classmates,
Today I’d like to talk about my favourite Chinese folk art—paper cutting.
Paper cutting is a traditional art with a long history. People usually use red paper to cut different shapes, like flowers, animals and Chinese characters. It is often used to decorate houses during festivals, especially the Spring Festival.
I love paper cutting because it is beautiful and full of good wishes. Every piece of work shows people’s love for life. Also, it is easy to learn but hard to master, which makes it very special.
As students, we should try to learn more about it and tell others about this great art. Let’s work together to protect and pass on our traditional folk arts!
Thank you!
