Steve loved cooking. One day, he was making salsa (辣番茄酱) with his mom. They needed tomatoes, so they went to the market.
On the way, Steve saw boys playing basketball. They never invited him. “I’m too short and not good at dribbling (运球),” he told Mom. She smiled, “Your hands aren’t great for basketball, but they’re amazing in the kitchen!” Steve felt better.
As they arrived at the market’s vegetable stands (摊位), Steve looked for best tomatoes. At the first stand, he saw ugly tomatoes. “Ugh! Not buying them,” he said to his mother.
The farmer, hearing him, walked over. “Smell this,” he said. Steve breathed in and was surprised by its wonderful smell. “Wow, if this tastes as good as it smells…”
But then Steve noticed round, pretty tomatoes at the next stand, so he took one. Seeing that, the farmer called out, “Before you buy any tomato, smell it first.”
Steve’s nose quickly told him it would not taste as good. “Hmm,” he said, turning back to the first stand, “I guess not-so-pretty on the outside doesn’t tell you anything about what’s inside.”
“Now you’re talking, young man,” said the farmer. “Seems like you’ve got a good eye—and a sharp nose!”

The “city walk” is becoming very popular in China! A mobile app called Xiaohongshu has many posts about city walks. In fact, there are now seven times more posts about it than before!
The “city walk” came from the UK and is different from a regular trip. When you go on a city walk, you are not dashing to see famous places like the Great Wall or the Forbidden City. Instead, you can take your time to go around the city slowly on foot, enjoy the local (当地的) ways and history, and find cool things you might not have noticed in the past. A city walk takes you away from busy tourist places. You can walk into local streets, meet the people, and see how they live. For example, you might see an old man playing chess in the park or children playing football on the street. You can also try food at small restaurants and learn more about the city’s history.
People who enjoy city walks are curious and love exploring by walking. This way, they can really understand the city better. For example, if you take a walk in Chongqing, you can enjoy the beautiful hills that the city is famous for. In Beijing, you can walk through the historic (有历史意义的) hutongs. You can see the everyday life of the locals and enjoy the buildings.
Young people enjoy the “city walk” the most. They want to relax and learn new things, even if they are busy. Walking is a great way to be alone with your thoughts and is good for your health. The “city walk” is a fun way to start exploring a city!
17.What does the underlined word “dashing” in Paragraph 2 mean
A. Waiting in line. B. Taking a break.

D. To talk about “city walk” and its benefits.

By now, you may have spent a lot of time looking at a screen today. You’re not alone. A report showed that the average (平均的) person in China spends over five and a half hours online every day now!
But let’s be honest. We’re not spending all that time working on important tasks, but on watching funny videos, looking at memes, or playing games. It’s fun, but it’s not helping our minds grow. In fact, Oxford’s 2024 Word of the Year was “brain rot,” which describes what happens when we spend too much time online with low-quality (低品质) content. Our thinking slows down, creativity goes away, and suddenly, watching cat videos feels like the best thing.
So, how did we get here One reason is that the Internet is so enjoyable that we can’t stop using it. There’s an endless short videos, trends, and games to keep us interested. It’s easy to get stuck in it. Why go outside or try a new hobby when you can use your phones for hours without moving
But it comes at a cost. The more time we spend on screens, the less we connect with the real world. We’re choosing group chats over playing outside together, and screen time over hobbies. Life starts to be controlled by our phone. When did life become so boring
The sad truth is that we’re losing the habit of “intentional leisure”—making time for true relaxation and enjoying life. True free time should help us feel happy, energetic, and connected to the world. Nature doesn’t have Wi-Fi, but it has fresh air, sunlight, and no notifications (通知信息).
Playing outside with friends is much better than laughing alone at memes on your phone. Life isn’t about how much time you have; it’s about how you use it. So next time you find yourself stuck in TikTok, remember “brain rot” is real. Step outside, take a break, and enjoy real life. You might be surprised at how great it is.
21.What will happen if we spend too much time online
A. We can relax by watching videos.
B. We cannot think of something new.
C. We will connect with the real world.
D. We will think faster and stay focused.
22.Which of the following is “intentional leisure”
A. Taking a break and enjoying nature.
B. Watching TV shows all day long.
C. Sharing stories with friends in group chats.
D. Checking social media posts in free time.
23.What can we do to avoid “brain rot”
A. Working much harder on schoolwork.
B. Sunbathing on the beach with friends.
C. Creating fun memes and posting them online.
D. Spending more time watching short videos.
24.What is the main idea of this passage
A. Outdoor activities make us feel better.
B. Breaks from screens help us enjoy hobbies.
C. Social media helps us communicate with others.
D. Being online too much hurts creativity and real life.
三、任务型阅读-简答:本大题共1小题,共11分。
25.One day, I asked student leaders, “What if we try a week without phones or computers ” They laughed and said, “No way! We can’t live without screens!” But I knew they were worried. So I suggested just one screen-free day instead. Still, they looked upset.
A study showed our students spend 6 hours a day on screens every day! Many students start their days by checking phones. They even look at phones when getting off the bus or waiting for parents. At school, they use computers for 2 hours every day.
We teachers know technology is helpful. But we want students to balance screen time with real-life fun. That’s why we start screen-free days.
On these days, teachers plan fun activities. Some bring back old games like card games. Others create new ones, like room escape games (密室逃脱游戏). Students talk face-to-face and play without checking their phones.
After the first screen-free day, students were surprised that they enjoyed it. They said, “We didn’t expect to enjoy it so much!”
While technology is already part of our world, it’s important to help students connect with friends and activities in real life.
Technology is part of our world, but it shouldn’t be the center of a student’s life.
