Xiao Peng, a 12-year-old Chinese boy, has too many activities. His father takes him away from school sixteen
afternoons a month and drives him across town to practice. “I do most of my homework in the car when we are
driving to the practice centre, and I have to do the rest when I get home. I am too tired, and I just want to have a
break,” he said in a sleepy way. Sometimes, he even sleeps in the car on his way home afuer a full day of school
and activities.
“More and more kids become unhappy because they have too many activities to do,” said Mr Wang, an expert
in child development. “41% of the children aged 9-13 said they felt worried most of the time, and more than 75%
of them said that they wished they had more free time to play.”
“Over-scheduling (过量的活动安排) is a growing problem for Chinese families,” said Mr Wang. It is not
good for both kids and parents. All these family members are always very busy, especially at dinner time. More
families have dinner quickly, or often have to eat fast food on their way to football practices or music lessons.
Dinner time, once a moment for family connections, becomes rushed and stressful. Kids need to learn how to relax.

Everyone is born with the ability to learn. However, your success in learning depends on your learning habits
(习惯). Research shows that successful learners have some good habits in common.
First of all, good learners often connect what they need to learn with things they are interested in. Studies
show that if you are interested in something, your brain is more active and it is also easier for you to focus on (专注)
for a long time. For example, if they need to learn English and they like music or sports, they can listen to English
songs or watch sports programmes in English.
Good learners know well what they are good at and what they need to practise more. Even if you learn
something well, you will forget the knowledge if you don’t use it. That’s why people say, “Use it or lose it.” One
more important saying is, “Practice makes perfect.” Good learners keep practising and are not afraid of making
mistakes. This is another good habit.
It is not enough to just study hard. Good learners also know how to study well. For example, they may take
notes by writing down key words or drawing mind maps. They also review regularly by reading their notes every
day or explaining the knowledge to others.
Last but not least, good learners often ask questions during or after class. They even ask each other and try to
find out the answers. In this way, knowledge grows from the good habit of questioning.
